Respect The Chief

You're home now. We could finally make an officer of you. You'd have Admiral without much of an argument from anyone.
No offense, sir, but "The Admiral" doesn't have quite the same ring to it.
Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 is the most important figure of the human race in the mid-26th century. Abducted at the age of six by the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), he was conscripted into the SPARTAN-II program. The initiative was originally designed to crush human rebellion against the Unified Earth Government as the human Insurrection movement neared its tipping point. John endured harsh physical and mental training, survived the physical augmentations required by the program, and was later matched with state-of-the-art Mjolnir battle armor.
Throughout his training and early career, John emerged as a clear leader among the Spartans and was set to lead a successful UNSC campaign to stop a brewing human civil war. Though through circumstance, he became the sole savior of the human race several times over. First, in the face of an alien hegemony called the Covenant--an advanced alien empire bent on the complete destruction of humanity. Later, against an eldritch parasite known as the Flood which toppled both the Ancient Human and Forerunner empires of the past. Most recently, John defended humanity against the efforts of an ancient Forerunner general called the Didact, who returned to take his revenge against humanity for wars fought a hundred millennia in the past.

General Info (Augmentations / Mjolnir Armor)

Pre-Augmentation / Training
Spartans were heavily trained almost daily since they were kidnapped at the age of 6, leading them to become physically and mentally prime by the young age of 14 even before receiving their augmentations.
Dr. Halsey marveled at what a spectacular physical specimen he had grown into. Fourteen years old and he had the body of an eighteen-year-old Olympic athlete, and a mind the equal of any Naval Academy honors graduate.
Description of an unaugmented 14 year old John; The Fall of Reach Ch 6
Augmentations
Codenamed Project: ASTER, the Spartan candidates were augmented to drastically increase their physiology and physical capabilities. Their bones were laced with powerful material to make them 'virtually unbreakable', their muscle tissue density was increased and lactase recovery time was decreased, they were given hormones to boost skeletal and muscle growth, increased eyesight, and had their nerves altered to drastically increase reaction time.

MJOLNIR Armor / Stat boosts

The feats in this RT will sorted by which armor John is wearing, as each iteration of Mjolnir armor increases his abilities further.
Unarmored - These feats occur after John receives his augmentation, but without any Mjolnir armor. They also all happen to occur when he is 14 years old and still recovering from his augmentations.
MJOLNIR Mark IV - The Mk IV was the first iteration of armor given to John and the rest of Spartan II's at the age of 15.
Neural interface / Onboard Computer
Mjolnir armor is linked to Spartans with a neural interface, which means they simply have to think and the armor would perform an action. Combined with the onboard computer, it allows Spartans to do things such as place Waypoint markers, or targets on their HUDs with a thought.
MJOLNIR Mark V - Deployed almost two and a half decades after the previous iteration of MJOLNIR, the Mk V now possessed recharging energy shields but retained the same double strength multiplier as the Mk IV.
Cortana - Cortana is the AI that was paired with Master Chief for Operation: REDFLAG, she is present for the feats that occur while John is wearing MJOLNIR Mk V and most while wearing Mk VI.
Hacking
MJOLNIR Mark VI - Due to the UNSCs rapid advances in technology, the Mk VI was deployed less than two months after the Mk V rendering it obsolete, containing major improvements in both shielding and stat multipliers.
MJOLNIR GEN 2 - The second generation of MJOLNIR armor developed after the Human-Covenant war ended. Every aspect of the armor has been improved upon and thrusters are now built into each set of armor, drastically increasing maneuverability.

The four Spartans that composed Blue Team covered his back, standing absolutely silent and immobile in their MJOLNIR combat armor. Someone had once commented that they looked like Greek war gods in the armor … but his Spartans were far more effective and ruthless than Homer’s gods had ever been.

2023.04.01 05:34 Ulrich-Stern ROS alternate ending

I thought of an alternate ending for ROS. By no means am I saying it should replace what we got, even though I don't like what we got. Just a fun little scenario that came to my mind :)
Luke and Snoke (who is not an attempted Palpatine clone) do not die in TLJ. More of TLJ would have to be reworked too so that my ROS can work. I would have to take out the duel in Snoke's throne room (would move to my ROS), but I would keep Luke (in the flesh, not a Force projection) vs Kylo and it would end in a stalemate because Kylo isn't powerful enough to kill Luke, and Luke refuses to try to kill his nephew again. My version is also based on our dear Carrie Fisher still being alive so that she would have a more active role in ROS. In ROS, the first act of the movie has subtle crumbs of Ben coming back to the light. In the second act, Force Ghost Anakin talks to his grandson, but it'd still be left uncertain if Ben would truly come back.
The final confrontations:
Luke & Snoke engage in intense combat. Rey fights the Knights as Kylo watches her struggle against them. Rey slowly starts taking some Knights down, but is becoming more fatigued and therefore susceptible to non lethal hits from the Knights.
After defeating the final Knight, Snoke (while still fighting Luke) orders Kylo to finish Rey off. Kylo plays with Rey a little, doing light swings with his lightsaber at her that she is barely able to block due to being so tired. Now having her in a position where he can easily kill her, Kylo is swarmed with memories of his life, which distracts him enough so that Rey is able to land a lucky, painful swipe on Kylo's leg making him kneel. She then swipes his arm.
7 Stormtroopers rush in and shoot at Rey. She takes down 4 of them before being too tired to continue fighting any longer, allowing them to hold her at gunpoint. Snoke once again orders Kylo to finish Rey off. Kylo hesitates again, angering Snoke beyond repair, so he orders the Stormtroopers to kill both Rey and Kylo. Kylo does his best to protect himself and Rey, but starts getting overpowered as more Stormtroopers come in.
Luke stops fighting Snoke, turning his back against him so that he can help Rey and Kylo. Luke kills the Stormtroopers using only the Force. Snoke strikes Luke with lightning, mostly targeting his heart. Luke falls as Snoke says "Now, Skywalker, you die!" mirroring the Palpatine duel 3 decades prior. Snoke gets caught up in his victory over Luke, continuing to strike Luke's body with lightning to make sure he stays down.
Ben comes back to the light and throws his lightsaber at Snoke (guiding it with the Force) which strikes Snoke through the chest. Ben uses the Force to move the lightsaber up, and then down, cutting Snoke in half vertically. Ben & Rey have a final moment with Luke before he dies and becomes one with the Force. First Order are defeated minutes after.
Leia mourns her brother, but is glad that her son has come back to the light. Almost every other Resistance member (including Poe and Finn) hates Ben for the crimes he's committed as Kylo Ren, but they make a personal difficult choice of not killing him since he is Leia's son. Ben exiles himself because of his crimes. Throughout the many years that follow, Leia, with Rey and Finn as her assistants, begin building a new Jedi Order.

Banana Farming in India: A Comprehensive Guide
Banana Farming in India: A Comprehensive Guide
Introduction
Bananas are climacteric fruits that go through a phase of growth with larger size and rising levels of starch-formed carbohydrates. Upon full ripeness, growth stops, and ripening is inhibited. The ripening process results in a softer texture, transformation of starch to sugar, change of skin color from green to yellow, and loss of tanginess, resulting in the fruit's distinctive flavor.
Bananas are a type of fruit that undergoes a developmental stage known as climacteric. During this stage, the size of the fruit increases, and the levels of carbohydrates, stored as starch, rise. Once fully ripe, growth ceases and the ripening phase commences. During this phase, the fruit becomes softer, its starch transforms into sugar, the skin color changes from green to yellow, and the fruit loses its firmness, resulting in a unique and delicious flavor.
India is a land of diversity, and its agriculture sector is no exception. From the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the lush tropical forests of the south, the country has a vast array of crops that are grown to sustain its large and growing population. Among these crops, bananas are one of the most important, both in terms of their cultural significance and their contribution to the country's economy. In this article, we will take a comprehensive look at banana farming in India, including its history, production, challenges, and future potential.
Types of Bananas Grown in India:
India is home to a large number of banana varieties, each with its own unique characteristics and uses. Some of the most common types of bananas grown in India include:
Banana farming in India is a diverse and dynamic industry, with many factors influencing the selection of the best variety for each situation. With over 20 cultivars available, farmers have a wide range of options to choose from to meet their specific needs. Some of the most popular varieties include Dwarf Cavendish, Robusta, Monthan, Poovan, Nendran, Red banana, Nyali, Safed Velchi, Basarai, Ardhapuri, Rasthali, Karpurvalli, Karthali, and Grandnaine.

Challenges Facing Banana Farming in India
a) Lack of Access to Technology: Many farmers in India still rely on traditional methods and are unable to benefit from the latest innovations in the industry. This can lead to low yields and poor-quality produce.
b) Pest and Disease Issues: Bananas are highly susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, including fungal diseases such as Panama disease, bacterial wilt, and Fusarium wilt. These diseases can cause significant crop losses, and they are difficult to control without access to proper pest management technologies.

2023.04.01 05:02 Adventure-us Help me run Kingmaker on Roll20! SPOILERS FOR KINGMAKER AP.

HI! So I played the Pathfinder video games and enjoyed them.
I am taking over as co-DM for the other DM of this campaign, and I'll be handling the next few sessions going through the war with the goblins and Sootscales. We are doing the roll20 version of Kingmaker and holy crap, this is a massive module.
What sections should I be reading up on? I am a little overwhelmed by just *how much* there is! I think next session is gonna be me setting up some side quests. Tuskgutter, Bokken's quest, and a mention of the fact that some kobolds have been robbing people recently.
I want to have a cute little savage kobold NPC outcast from the tribe because she spoke out against Tartuccio. I will use her to sort of guide the PCs and give them some exposition of what's going on with the tribes. The party has a kobold rogue so I think that will be a nice little way to get him invested in what's going on.
I would like to make mention that we are only level 2, and I think that the other DM has uh, maybe skipped some stuff? The party decided to head South apparently into the mountains on the way from Brevoy... And somehow didn't end up getting rocked by a Roc or something! Lol.
I am... Just a little lost, the way that the module is laid out in roll20 is not very easy to navigate. Maybe I'm old school I'm just used to a PDF or actual book...
Anyways, any and all help is appreciated! I am not concerned with spoilers too much as I have already cleared well past the Stag Lord in the Kingmaker PC game. I went and did all the content in the swamps, in fact, clearing out the trolls and dealing with that whole questline.
TL;DR, help me navigate the... IMO kind of terrible UI for the roll20 version of Kingmaker! Thanks!

2023.04.01 04:27 endersgame69 Our Wandering Time C4

They say you never know what to expect when you’re in a new place. Meeting dogpeople, catpeople, racoonpeople in lab coats and suits were all unexpected things. Finding myself plus one pair of boobs was another. But you know something?
In a way, those are all pretty small. Thanks to my genre savviness, the idea of magic and interworld travel wasn’t too shocking. I mean, I’m not saying I expected it or anything. But if you’re at least familiar with the concept, then it’s not hard to deal with.
But what really shocked me was my first step outside. I touched the panel and watched the segments of the door rise up, then stepped outside. Overhead I heard a wild scream and nigh jumped out of my skin. All of my tails bristled and my head snapped straight up. A wyvern with scales painted in a bright yellow pattern. I have to assume that since I was able to read the word ‘Airferry’ and I hadn’t had an issue with the letters or numbers from before, that the transition process gave me the necessary access to communication in this world.
But it sure didn’t give me the means to cope with the shock! The wyvern was ridden by a little yellow skinned norm wearing leather clothing and a pair of goggles secured to a leather cap on his head and strapped under his chin. From the wyvern’s body hung what might best be described as a long rowboat, but beneath the boat…or maybe barge? Was affixed a set of thick springs. It swayed a little, and the air picked up and carried their scarves and hair to trail behind them. But they too wore goggles on their faces to compensate for the speed of the air.
Far above I saw an airship. Literally. A god damn ship. Right down to the keel and rudder, secured by what I hope were metal cables that were secured to a net which bulged as it was pressed by a massive balloon longer than the ship itself.
The street was fairly ordinary, simple cobblestone, but I did not expect to see a pegasus and an eight legged sleipnir hitched outside of a round domed building. In the street, elves and humans mingled freely with each other, seemingly not even noticing their differences. In the stories I knew, hostility was the norm, but this place seemed rather cosmopolitan about everything.
A dwarf cobbler in what I can only describe as ‘old timey’ heavy boots and overalls made of canvas and wearing goggles with multiple lenses that were raised out of position, was looking up at a wolfman in a suit with a puffy snow white kerchief beneath his jaw bristled and growled, enduring the thunderous dwarven shout, “I don’t care what yew offerah me! Ah cannae finish when yew wawnt! Greatness takes time yah damn furry fool!”
People holding swords and wearing bits and pieces of armor were as common as scales on a fish, their shouting and noise wasn’t the only thing. A woman with long high elven ears was leaning out of the upper floor of a shop and hawking wares, “Fresh batch’a potions! Heal’n or skin peel’n, if you’ve got the gold, our potions will hold!”
‘At least jingles and slogans are the same in every world.’ I thought while my eyes bugged out of my head. The buildings were not the usual blocky boring brick squares I was used to. The buildings were of a spiral shape with rail lines that wove and curved around them left and right, and on the rails were glowing ‘miniature trains’. No. Trains is the wrong word. They were more like roller coaster cars, simple open cars in which people were riding to get from one place to another.
Bridges that crossed from one floor of a building to another were not metal, but rather they were vines that grew down from pointy green roofs, and they did not raise, they unrolled from one another and lowered or rose out of the way of the little chugging cars before binding together again, including little green armrests for safety or comfort. Strangely, there was no smoke from the engine car, and even stranger, it was pushing rather than pulling.
The buildings themselves were arranged in various designs from spiral shapes with winding staircases and doors every dozen paces or so going up, to ‘stacks’ of irregular blocks where each cube had a bridge between itself and its neighbor, with zigzag pattern steps going up from one floor to the next.
All those on the ground jostled together, though they made a clear path for those on horseback, or flowed seamlessly out of the way of landing air ferries, and I never saw any indication that the wyverns landed close to people. With their ferocious looking claws and oversized mouths with sharp teeth, I expected it could eat a child whole and a grown child… a grown up, in two or three bites.
‘Thank you internet, for you have blessed me with weebness that has translated into genre savviness, that I may live and not die of goddamn shock in the face of my long dreamt of transition to a new world full of adventure.’ I uttered a weebs prayer that I recalled from an anime group, and it felt good.
I took a deep breath, inhaling the air. It wasn’t as crisp as I hoped it might be. There was a definite odor of smoke, but it was more like burning wood than foul coal, and it was touched with the scent of pastries and fresh baked goods.
Sweets are a bit of a weakness of mine, so I scrapped my first plan to go join the adventurer’s guild and placed my hand on my slate, then I said, “Show me the way to a bakery.” I watched as a streetmap faded into view like a person stepping out of a thick fog, gradually becoming clear.
I was staring down at the map indicator, which was really nothing more than building shapes and a road, nothing intricate, when I decided to try an experiment. I was represented by a little green dot, but there was no color elsewhere. Just little black lines. “Increase realism by one hundred percent.” I instructed it, and the top down view of the city grew exponentially more complicated. I could see the rooftops and the many people passing by, at least the tops of their heads. I still had a black line pulsing on the screen as my guide, but… “Damn. If things worked this well back home then people could just never look up from their devices.” I mumbled and said, “Remove people.”
For a moment I panicked, ‘What if that killed everybody?!’ My head snapped up to look at the street. Everybody was alive. I gave a heavy sigh of relief and looked down, the realistic street and rooftops were there, but the ‘people’ and their mounts, thankfully, were gone.
You know, if I had to pick the seminal moment of this whole… whatever this is, it wouldn’t be showing up when and where I did. It wouldn’t be getting my slate or leaving the doctor behind. It wouldn’t even be stepping out the door of the building.
It would be this. The world was ‘real’ now, you know? I was about to actually move among the general population, all the dangers and experiences I wanted, were starting with ‘this’ one step more than any other.
It might seem strange to think of my life in genre specific terms, like a video game or an anime, manga, or light novel series. And I admit, it probably wasn’t my best idea. What made me realize it wasn’t the wisest thing was my epic trip to the bakery which, according to the map, was one block away.
What danger did I face?
What plot hook caught my eye?
Was it a mugging by a stranger?
Did I see a pair of pretty girls being mugged in an alley in need of some sexy rescuing?
Did a stranger grab me and whisper in a hushed and raspy voice, “I have been told by the gods that you would come, follow me, they’re looking for you…”
Or perhaps a military or bandit raid on the city that gave me a chance to be a heroine?
Hell no.
Nothing freaking happened.
Nobody stared at me with wonder and awe, I wasn’t totally unique, I saw two other kitsunes in just that short distance. I just tried not to bump into too many people, though I seemed to be the only one in the crowd like that. Pedestrians bumped shoulders a lot, without so much as an apology.
I quickly realized that it was so impossible not to, that there was no reason to apologize for doing it.
So I got over that fairly quickly, but I was mildly annoyed of the unfortunate reminder that I’d actually have to put in the work to have an adventure. There was no call to it for me, not that I really saw. ‘Summoned as a Janitor’ was the worst title I could possibly think of, and if I ever wrote this down, I’d be damned if I’d give my life story that title.
Anyway, the bakery… I really didn’t need directions for it after a little while as the sweet and savory scents tickled my nose before I was halfway there. I just leaned forward, following the tantalizing smell and soon found myself staring into the window of a shop. A line of baked goods, breads sprinkled with sugar, little green cakes with what I had to conclude was some kind of dark honey, and some little round crispy things with what was definitely melted chocolate, all caught my eye.
The door to the shop was open and I hastened within, a portly orc was wearing a giant oversized chef’s hat with a bronze clock face on it. One look and I knew it wasn’t decoration.
Whatever it was counting down for, it reached it before I reached the counter. It made a quick, ‘ding!’ noise and he said, “S’cuze me.” And disappeared into the back. He was a pretty standard orc, with thick muscled arms, greenish body and tusks for teeth below a porcine nose. His one distinguishing feature was that he was quite fat.
‘That’s how I know I can trust him. He’s eating his own work.’ I concluded and looked around. While what I saw of the city could be described as at least somewhat ‘dirty’ the shop itself was surprisingly clean. The racks were wood, except for two on the far wall which were of silver with even fancier items than on the wood, and I realized that probably represented a higher cost. The deeper you went inside, the more you paid.
“Fresh baked rumbldumplins!” He all but shouted, holding out the hot tray with his bare hands. Orcs were notoriously thick skinned, it was no surprise that his hands weren’t burning, but it was still weird to see one as a baker. He tilted it so I could see, and a little round pastry with an unfamiliar flower shaped ‘fruit’ I think? Sat in the center dripping with liquid sugar from what passed for leaves, landing on the flakey crust and drizzling down to the pan.
“You buy fresh, I give you discount on buying the old.” He said and his deepset amber eyes gave me a conspiratorial wink. “You my first customer of the day, so what you say eh?” He boomed at me.
I noticed the clock on his hat was ticking down again, and wondered what else was there.
“Yes. I say yes!” The rumbledumplins smelled great and looked even better.
“You make a good deal, I give you half off, eh? On any of the old but the sanziberry pie. We short of sanziberries.” He said and grabbed a newspaper from behind his counter.
“Why is that?” I asked. ‘Is this a plot hook? A quest beginning? Alright it’s a fetch quest, but still, it’d be my first!’ I could feel the excitement building and my heart starting to race.
“Oh, contract dispute. The bastards want triple the creds for the same thing. So I’m getting a new supplier and it takes time to get started. Fool too! Big fool. Sanziberries last a long time. Pie stays fresh. Do something like that with rumbleberries and I might have to pay first. Big fool.” He repeated with a shake of his big round head. “How many you want?”
The transaction was completed in a heartbeat, just like the doctor said. I paid ten creds and walked out with six rumbledumplings and a dozen chocolate crisps all wrapped up in old newspapers. I munched on one when I stood outside the shop.
“So much for a plot hook.” I mumbled while my eyes popped at the rich flavor melting on my tongue. When I realized at that moment, at the completion of my first ‘journey’ that literally not a goddamn thing had happened, or would happen, or could happen in the way it did in games and books and visual media, I snapped back to reality.
“I’m not getting a call to adventure. So… I’m going to have to pay it a visit instead.” I said, then swallowed my first purchase, and stowed the remainder under my arm for a moment. I touched my slate and said, “Show me to the Adventurer’s Guild.”

Most wrestling championships are, of course, very similar. Same rules, same type of prestige, held by similar types of wrestlers, etc. The NJPW World Television Championship, though, is different. Every match has a fifteen minute time limit. If you run out of time, the match goes to a coin flip. The phrase “to be the man, you gotta beat the man” doesn’t apply here, because if the man fails to defeat you, then they could still lose the belt off of complete chance. It’s a concept that greatly interests me, and since it’s still new, the first year of its existence will shape how the gold is viewed in the future. It was captured for the first time at Wrestle Kingdom 17, so let’s book it until Wrestle Kingdom 18, shall we?

NJPW Sakura Genesis 2023
Shota Umino vs. Zack Sabre Jr. (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
Zack Sabre Jr. has had a fun reign with the NJPW World Television Championship so far (despite his banger of a theme being changed), and tonight, he’s defending against a man that some have called the future of FBE, Shota Umino. Umino became one of the most well known Young Lions in the company back when he was following Jon Moxley everywhere, but “Shooter” is not a Young Boy anymore. He’s received co-signs from legends of the game, but praise only goes so far. Tonight, it’s sink or swim in the biggest match of his career, and he’s facing a man more than capable of twisting him into knots and ripping his limbs clean off his body (okay, maybe not CLEAN off). It’s a huge test, but with his potential, anything is possible.
The match is a lot of fun, as they both work aggressively, not wanting to cut things close with this fifteen minute time limit. Sabre looks for a submission the whole time, but Umino is doing a good job of staying positioned near the ropes so that he can break the holds every time The Technical Wizard gets a hold of him. Shota tries to create space with his striking, and after a beautiful Dropkick, he takes control for a while. Time is starting to tick, and after wearing Blondie down with some strikes, Shota lifts the Champion up and plans him with a Fisherman’s Suplex! Hooks the leg with a Bridging Pin! One…Two…and Sabre kicks out! He picks Zack up, but Sabre catches him with a big Forearm and grabs a Headlock. He tries for a Headlock Takeover, but Umino manages to stay on his feet, and both men go toppling through the ropes and to the apron.
Sabre starts trying to lift Shota back into the ring so that he can submit him, with time ticking down. Desperately, he starts to wear Umino down by locking in an Octopus Hold! We breach the fourteen minute mark, and the challenger makes the daring move to leap off the apron, The Front Man still on his back! This hurts both men, but Umino limps to his feet and throws ZSJ in the ring, the clock dangerously low! He goes for the Death Rider on his opponent, but Junior counters and transitions into a Cradle Pin! One…Two…and Umino gets the shoulder up! Both men dart to their feet and throw a Lariat, and both connect and fall to the mat! Three…Two…One…ZERO! Time has expired, and we’re going to a coin flip decision! Both men stand up, and Sabre, with the Champion’s Right to choose, picks tails. The coin toss happens, and results in…HEADS! SHOTA UMINO HAS WON THE NJPW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP, AND SABRE IS FURIOUS!
Shota Umino def. Zack Sabre Jr. in 15:00 to win the NJPW World Television Championship

NJPW Collision in Philadelphia
Danny Limelight vs. Shota Umino (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
Shota is right back in action, and after a callout on Twitter, Danny Limelight of Team Filthy has gotten himself a championship opportunity. This match is quite fun, with Limelight showcasing exactly why he’s one of the most underrated men in wrestling today. However, Shota is ultimately able to take firm control of the contest, and around the ten minute mark, he plants Limelight with a Spike Death Rider and pins him for the victory. Danny leaves the ring with Team Filthy, but they look back at Shota with vitriol in their eyes.
Shota Umino def. Danny Limelight in 9:21 to retain the NJPW World Television Championship

NJPW Hirooki Goto 20th Anniversary
Shota Umino and Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. TenKoji
On Hirooki Goto’s twentieth anniversary, we get a tag match with three NJPW legends and one potential future legend. The tag match is a lot of fun, and at the end, Shota gets a huge rub as he plants Tenzan with a Death Rider to pick up the victory. Everybody in the ring embraces each other, and then Tanahashi and Umino salute the crowd, but Team Filthy ruins the party, darting out and laying waste to Shota! Tom Lawlor stands tall, picking up the World Television Championship and posing with it while the rest of Team Filthy holds Tana off!
Shota Umino and Hiroshi Tanahashi def. TenKoji in 11:45

NJPW Road to Wrestling Dontaku 2023: Day Seven
Tom Lawlor vs. Ryohei Oiwa
Oiwa tries his very best in this one, showing tremendous heart, but of course, Lawlor is able to dispatch the Young Lion pretty quickly, locking him in a choke and forcing him to submit. After the match, Team Filthy celebrates in the ring, but Shota Umino runs out with a chair and starts knocking most of the members to the side! He gets a hold of Tom Lawlor and starts wailing on him with the weapon until officials get in between the two! They’re having a title match next week at Wrestling Dontaku, and this one is going to have some heat behind it!
Tom Lawlor def. Ryohei Oiwa in 3:08

NJPW Wrestling Dontaku 2023
Tom Lawlor vs. Shota Umino (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
Umino is pissed coming into this match, angry that Filthy Tom spoiled his moment at Goto’s Anniversary Show, and he starts swinging for the fences from the very beginning. Lawlor, a skilled grappler, is able to use Roughneck’s anger and aggression against him, taking advantage of his overzealousness. Because of this, the match lasts quite a while, even going late into the thirteenth minute, but Umino is able to retain with a Death Rider from the middle rope. His aggression worked this time, but Filthy gave him a hell of a fight. Could Shota’s style cost him in the future?

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 2023: Day Three
Robbie Eagles has just lost a match in the BOSJ, and he is furious about it. Instead of placing the blame on himself, though, he blames the referee for his contest, Red Shoes Unno! Eagles grabs Red Shoes and threatens him, but he isn’t safe for long because Unno’s son, Shota Umino, rushes out to defend him! Eagles runs off, but Umino stares him down. In the post-show press conference, Umino is furious and wants Eagles to face him on a night where Robbie’s block isn’t competing. The contest is scheduled for the sixth day of BOSJ.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 2023: Day Six
Robbie Eagles vs. Shota Umino (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
Shota, just like last time, comes out of the gate very aggressively, which is a good strategy for a match with a short time limit, but also a risky one. Eagles is able to do some damage, and a lot of it is because he manages to piss Umino off and take advantage, even hitting a brutal Poison Rana! It’s a back-and-forth affair, but eventually, Umino manages to escape a Michinoku Driver attempt, lock Robbie in a standing Sleeper, weaken him sufficiently enough, and plant him with a Death Rider for the pinfall victory!
Shota Umino def. Robbie Eagles in 12:24 to retain the NJPW World Television Championship
After the match, Eagles gets up and offers a handshake to the man that just defeated him. Shota seems very, very hesitant, but accepts it, and the two shake hands. However, Zack Sabre Jr., Robbie's TMDK stablemate and the man that Shota took the belt from, attacks Roughneck from behind! He soaks in the jeers from the crowd, and, in the post-show press conference, states that he wants to challenge for the TV Title at Dominion. He says that he lost the belt via coin flip, so Shota is the champion legitimately based on pure chance. He’s too aggressive, not refined enough, and he WILL make a mistake so big that Sabre will be able to capitalize and take his belt back. Later on in the scrum, Shota accepts.

AEW Dynamite (May 31)
Bryan Danielson doesn’t yet have a match for Forbidden Door, but he has a proposal. In New Japan, there’s a pretty new title, the World Television Championship. He knows that by Forbidden Door, that belt will belong to either Shota Umino or Zack Sabre Jr. The prospect of either match is exciting to him, because he has heard stories about “Shooter” from Moxley, and he was meant to face The Bone Master at last year’s Forbidden Door. Plus, the American Dragon wants to make in-roads in Japan, so this is the perfect opportunity. No matter who has the strap, the Blackpool Combat Club is coming for it in Toronto.

NJPW Dominion 6.10 in Osaka-Jo Hall
Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Shota Umino (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
This match literally went to the wire last time it happened, and Shota Umino doesn’t want to leave his aspirations and his destiny in the hands of fate once again, so he wrestles even more aggressively than last time! ZSJ, though? He sort of hangs back, takes a beating for a while, hoping for Shota to make a mistake. Indeed he does, as the champion goes for a Rolling Elbow without setting it up properly, and the Submission Master is able to isolate the arm and begin manipulating Shota in position for a Hurrah! Another Year, Surely This One Will Be Better Than The Last; The Inexorable March of Progress Will Lead Us All to Happiness! Shota has no choice but to tap out! After three defenses, the NJPW World Television Championship has returned to TMDK!
Zack Sabre Jr. def. Shota Umino in 10:59 to win the NJPW World Television Championship

AEW Dynamite (June 21)
Zack Sabre Jr., in a pre-taped segment, talks about his upcoming match with Bryan Danielson at the second Forbidden Door event. He says that he has been looking forward to this match for a long while, for two reasons. Firstly, last year, he was meant to face the Dragon, and it fell through. Secondly, last year, he lost to a Blackpool Combat Club member in Claudio Castagnoli, and Bryan denied him the chance to prepare, so he’s been holding that grudge ever since. He doesn’t want to inflict punishment on Danielson for only fifteen minutes, no. He has spoken to AEW and NJPW officials, and he has negotiated a stipulation. Two out of Three Falls, and every fall is contested under NJPW World Television Championship rules!

AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door II
Two out of Three Falls: Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
The first fall is a very fun one, as the two men in the ring exchange technical holds in one of the finest displays of chain wrestling in recent memory. It’s very evenly-matched, and even geared towards ZSJ for much of the contest, but once the BCC member is able to escape the Jim Breaks Armbar, he’s able to take control by peppering the TMDK leader with Roundhouse Kicks. One of the kicks catches Sabre directly in the skull, and Danielson takes him down and applies the LeBell Lock, but he hasn’t been paying attention to the clock, and time expires! The referee gets a coin, and ZSJ calls Tails for the coin toss. The coin lands on…TAILS! Zack Sabre Jr. escaped by the skin of his teeth, getting saved by the bell and then getting the luck of the draw!
In the second fall, though, Danielson carries on his momentum from the first, and on top of that, he is VERY angry about the coin toss not going his way. He comes out of the gate wrestling as aggressively as Shota Umino, but unlike Umino, Sabre can’t seem to counter it. He gets some offense in here and there, but Bryan is pressuring him too much, and all of the kicks do a lot of cumulative damage. After thwarting an attempt at Hypernormalisation, Danielson runs the ropes and levels Sabre with a Busaiku Knee! Makes the cover! One…Two…Three! That fall went less than seven minutes, and Danielson has full control! He waits in the corner for Zack to find his footing for the third fall.
The third and final fall begins, and Danielson goes for another Busaiku Knee, but it’s dodged! This one has plenty of reversals in it, neither man managing to lock the other in a submission! ZSJ is probably slightly more technically proficient, but Bryan is able to bridge the gap with his striking, and once we’re past the ten minute mark of this fall, both men are just absolutely destroyed! Danielson is throwing kick after kick after kick, and they’re landing to the body, but ZSJ catches one and slaps on a Heel Hook, or as he calls it, the Sunday Rail Engineering Works Replacement Bus Service! Danielson is locked in the middle of the ring, and he has no choice but to tap out! ZSJ has retained the NJPW World Television Championship!
Zack Sabre Jr. def. Bryan Danielson two falls to one to retain the NJPW World Television Championship

NJPW G1 Climax 33
The G1 Climax rolls around, and it’s NOT A FOUR BLOCK BULLSHIT G1. Zack Sabre Jr. is in the A Block, and, to the delight of NJPW fans and AEW fans everywhere, Bryan Danielson is in the B Block! Danielson is very angry that he lost at Forbidden Door, especially considering the fact that he was well on his way to winning the first fall before the coin flip went in Sabre Jr.’s favour. While both men have plenty of great matches in their respective blocks, neither one makes the finals. Their feud does result in a match at the Finals, though. TMDK is at ZSJ’s side, but BCC isn’t in Japan, so Danielson enlists the help of Strong Style.
TMDK (Zack Sabre Jr., Mikey Nicholls, Shane Haste and Robbie Eagles) vs. Bryan Danielson and Strong Style (Minoru Suzuki, Ren Narita and El Desperado)
Strong Style and Bryan Danielson are cut from the same cloth, and the quartet works well together, with the group allowing the American Dragon to get some shots in at ZSJ. However, the chemistry isn’t there as much as it is with TMDK, and Haste and Nicholls are able to isolate Despy on the outside of the ring and take him out. Suzuki and Sabre, as former stablemates, have a very fun sequence, and Narita shines in the contest as well, but the eventual finish comes when Eagles rolls a beaten-down Desperado into the ring, and ZSJ plants his former partner with the Zack Driver to pick up the win.
TMDK def. Bryan Danielson and Strong Style in 13:13
After the match, ZSJ grabs the mic and shit-talks Danielson, telling him to pack his shit and go back to the “Blackpool Country Club”. Suddenly, the big screen lights up, and on it is Jon Moxley! He talks about how he was supposed to face Zack Sabre Jr., but didn’t. Recently, he was supposed to wrestle in the UK, but he didn’t. If The Front Man hates BCC so much, how about they make up for all the lost time and face off for the Television Championship at Royal Quest? ZSJ contemplates it, and agrees to the contest. Mox, on the big screen, says “I don’t know what you just said, because this video just so happens to be…pre-recorded.” The champion turns around, and Mox is right there! Death Rider, and he runs away before TMDK can get to him!

NJPW Royal Quest III
Jon Moxley vs. Zack Sabre Jr. (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
This match has been long-awaited, and Zack Sabre Jr., in his home country, is looking to extend his second reign with the NJPW World Television Championship. Jon Moxley, though, is an absolute force. This is a great dichotomy of styles, as Mox tries to get the match on the outside of the ring to do damage with his great brawling, while The Submission Master wants things right in the middle of the squared circle so that he can submit the Death Rider. After a frenetic match, ZSJ is busted open, and he’s trying desperately to take Mox down, but he stuffs the takedown! Elbows to the back of the head! Hooks the arms! PARADIGM SHIFT/DEATH RIDER! COVER! ONE…TWO…THREE! JON MOXLEY IS THE NEW NJPW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPION!
Jon Moxley def. Zack Sabre Jr. in 14:31 to win the NJPW World Television Championship

AEW Dynamite (September 6)
We get a recap of Royal Quest, showing the fact that Jon Moxley has won the NJPW World Television Championship, and then we cut to a backstage promo from the man himself. He talks about how he has always loved performing in New Japan, but it seems like wrenches always get thrown into his plans. The pandemic forced him to give up his US Title, he lost in the G1 back in the day because of Toru Yano’s bullshit, and he just hasn’t been there as much as he would have liked to be. However, now that he has gold, he doesn’t plan on letting it go. “The Blackpool Combat Club has the World Television Championship, and we’re bringing it to REAL television.”

AEW Dynamite (September 13)
Darius Martin vs. Jon Moxley (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
The younger member of Top Flight is in singles action tonight. He’s coming in as the huge underdog, but a win would propel him to superstardom, and over to Japan. His opponent, though, is Jon Moxley, a man that’s meaner now than he’s ever been. They have a fun match, with Martin’s insane pace seeming to benefit him with the short time limit. He’s very difficult to ground, but Moxley eventually does figure out a way to do so, locking Darius in the Bulldog Choke and forcing him to tap for the successful retention.
Jon Moxley def. Darius Martin in 8:20 to retain the NJPW World Television Championship

ROH TV (October 5)
Yuji Nagata vs. Jon Moxley (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
Yuji Nagata is in the United States for a tour, and after finding out, Jon Moxley challenged him to a match for the NJPW World Television Championship over in Ring of Honor. Blue Justice accepted, so now we’re here. We’ve seen this match before, and last time Mox won relatively easily, but Yuji is a legend because of his ability to adapt. He gives Jon a little bit more than he expected, and busts the champion’s chest open with a flurry of chops! Moxley comes alive after that, very angry, and after beating the legend down, hits three Regal Knees and a Paradigm Shift to take the victory.
Jon Moxley def. Yuji Nagata in 10:00 to retain the NJPW World Television Championship
After the match, Moxley walks up to Nagata aggressively, looking ready to attack. However, somebody runs out to make the save…SHOTA UMINO! Yuji Nagata is one of the men that trained The Roughneck, but Moxley is the one that taught him almost everything he knows! Umino doesn’t get physical, but he does try to defuse the situation, and Moxley backs off. Shota turns around to help Nagata up, and MOXLEY LAYS HIM OUT FROM BEHIND! PICKS HIM UP! DEATH RIDER! HE JUST DESTROYED HIS OWN PROTEGE!

AEW Dynamite (October 18)
Jon Moxley is interviewed by Lexy Nair, who asks why he attacked Shota Umino on ROH TV. He says that he looks at Shota and just feels disappointed. “Shooter, I trained you to be a vicious, violent son of a bitch, and to your credit, you try. You wrestle aggressively, but you leave yourself exposed, and you lose. I wrestle aggressively, and it wins me belts. You wear my jacket, and you use my finisher, but you are NOT me. You aren’t a wild man, you are a kid trying to be one. If you were really as violent as you’ve been trying to be, if you were really a Roughneck, you wouldn’t have let your heart get the better of you and make you come out to save Yuji Nagata. I know you want this belt back, and I know that I want to show you exactly why you aren’t the wrestler that I thought I had molded you into. At Power Struggle, Shooter, I will prove that no matter what you call yourself, you’ll never be anything more than my Young Lion.”

AEW Dynamite (October 25)
Shota Umino vs. Jack Cartwheel
Jack Cartwheel, seen on Dark a few times, is making his Dynamite debut against Shota Umino. Of course, this is a showcase match for the former NJPW World Television Champion, but Jack shows out as well, impressing the crowd with his almost supernatural agility. Unfortunately for the underdog Cartwheel, he gets caught with a Dropkick off of a springboard move, and Roughneck assumes control. He hits a Death Rider and makes the cover for the one…two…three.
Shota Umino def. Jack Cartwheel in 6:46
Shota picks up his jacket and goes to leave, but Jon Moxley comes out and gets in his face. He calls him a Young Boy, says that he doesn’t have what it takes to be champion, and Umino gets frustrated. He throws the jacket in Mox’s face and throws a punch! The two men brawl until officials pull them apart! Power Struggle is going to be one emotionally-charged match!

NJPW Power Struggle 2023
Shota Umino vs. Jon Moxley (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
Mentor vs. Protege, now bitter rivals. Jon Moxley looking to extend his title reign, Umino looking to reclaim the title that he lost earlier this year. Shota is no longer Shooter, he no longer has the Mox jacket, he is his own man. Not only is he his own man, but he goes to war with Jon Moxley. Moxley seems to be expecting Shota to be as aggressive as he usually is, but Umino has refined his style and instead of getting reversed and leaving himself exposed, is actually countering Moxley’s moves! He hits a Regal Knee on Moxley, busting the man open around the seven minute mark!
The blood seems to wake Moxley up, though, and he snaps, managing to do some prolonged damage to the challenger. Time is starting to tick, and with only about two minutes remaining, The Death Rider goes for a, well, Death Rider. Shota spins out of it, kicks Mox in the gut, AND GOES FOR A DEATH RIDER OF HIS OWN! CONNECTS! COVER! ONE…TWO…THR-AND MOXLEY KICKS OUT! HE’S NOT ABOUT TO LOSE TO HIS OWN MOVE! Shota checks the clock and quickly lifts Moxley to his knees. Runs the ropes, charges at him, and HITS HIM WITH A SHOTGUN DROPKICK TO THE BACK OF THE HEAD! ON COMMENTARY, KEVIN KELLY CALLS IT “THE STRAIGHT SHOOTER”! HOOKS THE LEG! ONE…TWO…THREE! YOUNG BOY NO MORE, SHOTA UMINO IS A TWO-TIME NJPW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPION!
Shota Umino def. Jon Moxley in 13: 46 to win the NJPW World Television Championship
On the post-show press conference, Shota says that he wants his first defense to be against Ren Narita.

NJPW World Tag League 2023: Night Seven
Ren Narita vs. Shota Umino
Ren Narita’s faction, Strong Style, is busy feuding with TMDK, but he takes a night off from waging war to challenge Shota for the NJPW World Television Championship. The two of them are the future of the company, and they have one hell of a match tonight, with Narita coming within an inch of winning the belt after Umino just BARELY manages to get a rope break. Time is winding down, and this one may very well go to a coin toss! With about twenty seconds left, Narita goes for a takedown, but Shota rolls through, gets behind Ren, and hits a short Straight Shooter! RUNS THE ROPES AND DELIVERS A SECOND, BIGGER ONE FOR GOOD MEASURE! MAKES THE COVER WITH JUST A FEW SECONDS LEFT! ONE…TWO…THREE! HE WON WITH JUST A SECOND LEFT ON THE CLOCK!
Shota Umino def. Ren Narita in 14:59 to retain the NJPW World Television Championship
After the match, the two men shake hands, after proving that they have impossibly bright futures. Shota leaves the ring, and Narita goes to do so as well, but TMDK comes pouring out to assault Narita, their feud still ongoing! El Desperado and Minoru Suzuki come to his aid, but TMDK still has a numbers advantage…until SHOTA UMINO TURNS BACK AND RUSHES INTO THE RING! He pulls Zack Sabre Jr. away, and the two stare daggers at each other…BEFORE COMING TO BLOWS! THIS IS AN ALL OUT BRAWL, AND TMDK RUNS FROM IT! Minoru Suzuki gets a Strong Style shirt and hands it to Shota. After some deliberation, he PUTS IT ON! STRONG STYLE IS A FOUR MAN UNIT!
During the post show press conference, both Umino and Sabre call each other out for a rubber match, and the contest is made official for Wrestle Kingdom 18.

NJPW Road To Tokyo Dome: Night One
Strong Style (Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado, and Shota Umino) vs. TMDK (Zack Sabre Jr., Kohei Fujita, and Shane Haste)
For a throwaway tag, this one has a lot of heat behind it. It’s Shota Umino’s first match as a member of Strong Style, and a chance for him to establish dominance over ZSJ. The match is a fun one, but the most important moment of the match comes when Shota and Sabre are in the ring together. Zack goads him and insults him repeatedly, and frustrates him so much that the champion LEVELS HIM WITH A CLOSED FIST PUNCH! ZSJ smiles a shit-eating grin, pointing at Shota as if to say “You’re just as aggressive as you were during your first reign.” Umino has been keeping his cool lately, but ZSJ just got to him. Strong Style wins the match after Suzuki fucking MURDERS Fujita, but Umino looks shaken in victory.
Strong Style def. TMDK in 12:57

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18
Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Shota Umino (c) - NJPW World Television Championship
This is it. Each man has won one match apiece, each man has taken the Television Title off of the other. Shota has only ever defeated ZSJ via Coin Toss, and he’s looking for a more decisive victory tonight, while the Technical Wizard wants to prove that his spot will not be overtaken by a relative upstart. The contest is an intense one, and, with Shota trying to maintain his composure, a measured chess match.
Throughout, ZSJ tries to frustrate Shota, and as the match winds down, after nearly choking him out, he manages to. Shota winds back for a closed fist punch…BUT TRANSITIONS INTO A BRUTAL SLAP, SPINNING SABRE AROUND! WAISTLOCK! GERMAN SUPLEX! ROLLS THROUGH, ZSJ IS ON HIS KNEES AND UMINO RUNS THE ROPES! STRAIGHT SHOOTER! COVER! ONE..TWO…THREE!!! SHOTA UMINO IS NOT MOX’S YOUNG BOY, AND HE IS NOT ZSJ’S PUNCHING BAG! “ROUGHNECK” SHOTA UMINO IS HIS OWN MAN, AND HE IS YOUR NJPW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPION!

2023.04.01 03:19 NoNameComputers Strong Towns Meeting on 4/13 at 5:30 at Tap and Handle

The next meeting for our local Strong Towns group has been set for Thursday (4/13) at 5:30 PM at the Tap and Handle.
The focus of this meeting will be an email writing campaign to local and state politicians focused around the land use code changes and the new state bill that allows upzoning (i.e., building housing other than single family homes) in Colorado cities. Digital feedback is also open on the land use code, so we will be putting in comments on that as well.
Anyone who has not engaged with your local and state politicians are particularly encouraged to come join us. If you feel like you do not know enough to participate, we are all learning together and this is a good chance to get involved! Please bring a laptop, tablet or other device you like to use to write.
The opposition to these changes is strong and vocal, so we need people to show up and engage at both the state and local level if anything is going to change.
For those unfamiliar with the local land use code revisions you can find more information on the city site: https://www.fcgov.com/housing/lucupdates
For more information about the state bill, please check out the article and link to the bill here: https://leg.colorado.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2023A/bills/2023a_213_01.pdf

2023.04.01 03:18 Odenetheus Miquella = Melena = the Gloam-Eyed queen?

So, it's late, I'm drunk, and I've not got the energy to make this into a fancy post, so I'll just give you some statements and you can decide for yourself. I think Melena is the spirit of Miquella, and I think both of them are the Gloam-Eyed Queen
Melena gets her purple eye back after we kill Malekith.
The Beast eye Gurranq gives us is described as a purple eye.
Melena has three claw-marks in her face.
All of Miquella's powers are purple.
He's depicted as a person with only one pinkpurple eye on St Trina's torch. We don't know whether or not he had one or two eyes, but since only one of Melena's eyes is the Beast Eye, it wouldn't be weird if Miquella only had one purple eye, which would be why he's depicted with that feature accentuated.
We know that Miquella is a former (or future) owner of Torrent, as is Melena.
We know the Gloam-eyed queen was beaten by Malekith.
Gloam-Eyed means dusk-eyed or twilight-eyed.
We know Miquella tried to bring about the Eclipse (which would obviously have the lighting of dusktime).
You normally go to bed around dusk (in the time period-period Elden Ring is set in), and Miquella is the saint/demi-god of sleep.
Both Melena and Miquella seemingly want Destined Death (Miquella for finishing off Godwyn).
Melena's office is on the border between the Forbidden Lands and Leyndell.
Both Melena and Miquella are known for shepherding people for their own purposes.
St Trina is potentially the female alter ego of Miquella, just like Radagon is the alter ego of Marika, and Melena could be the spirit of St Strina, and by extension, Miquella (which would explain why her hair isn't the same color as Miquella's blond hair).

Final Thoughts & Advice:
Well, clearly, this whole application process is so random. I didn't get admitted into any UCs except Santa Cruz, Davis, and Berkeley, so who knows what's going on there. Getting WL at Irvine was also strange, but oh well. Ensure you apply to enough schools, but ensure your essays are in tip-top shape—they must be genuine!!
I'd like to mention that using Chat GPT for general research on schools is an underrated tactic. It genuinely helped me figure out the vibe and idea behind all of these schools and saved me countless hours of research. Definitely use it, but don't abuse it (Chat-GPT essays are GARBAGE).
There are a couple of things I wish I had done differently during this application season and in high school in general.
  1. GPA: Your GPA is vital to you getting through their initial filters, and if you look at almost any college's common data set, they value GPA to the max. On a 4.3 scale, my GPA was actually below average for many of these schools, and this was due to 2 Bs in Math and English. An engineering major having a B in math isn't exactly a good look, so it is imperative that you are acing the classes your major is directly related to.
  2. EC List: I believe your EC list is as important as your essays. Framing a good EC list is terrifying, to be honest, and in my ED/EA round, my ECs came out as pompous and over the top. Reframing everything for the RD applications helped me come across as more genuine and a real human. Don't fluff up your hours!!! Nobody can work 18 hours a day, and AOs will be extremely suspicious seeing so many hours but a disproportionate amount of impact.
  3. Essays: Be genuine. Don't try to act like you're writing a paper for your final English exam. This isn't going to be graded on a scale of 0-100 for formality and grammar, but the AOs will be grading your personality, who you are, and how you'll fit into their next class. If your essays aren't realistic, truthful, and clear on why you want to go to that school, you won't have much success.
As for where I'll commit, I have no clue yet. Check back in a month, and I'll have updated this post. Feel free to drop your thoughts; deciding between CMU, Berkeley, and Dartmouth is not something I am looking forward to.

2023.04.01 02:34 Karlythewonderdog Please help with my 8 night basic itinerary

Last minute trip to PR, our first time there. We’re a couple in our 30s from the states. We like to stay active on vacation, but I’d really like us to have some relaxing beach time on this one. We enjoy history, walking tours, architecture, art, interacting with locals, hiking, waterfalls, local food and music. Pretty much everything! I finally decided to miss Vieques on this trip, because I don’t want to add the stress of multiple car rentals, and we won’t be there during a new moon to make the bio bay the best time. Here’s my first draft of an itinerary.
Day 1: plane lands at 11:42 AM. Explore Old San Juan, take a walking tour.
Day 2: Old San Juan
Day 3: Beaches of OSJ. Logging in at 8 and 11 to try for next day Yunque tickets.
Day 4: pick up rental car, hopefully go to El Yunque. Stay in Luquillo or Fajardo. Beach day if we can’t get rainforest passes.
Day 5: if we didn’t get El Yunque tickets, go on a guided tour of El Yunque. If we did, hang out on the beach. Stay in Fajardo or Luquillo.
Day 6: Day trip to Culebra. Really hoping to see nesting sea turtles (from a respectful distance). Stay in Luquillo or Fajardo.
Day 7: Drive south (Ponce?) Interested in coffee tour and a new coast, maybe the Guanica area to see the dry forest.
Day 8: drive to Cabo Rojo? Stay same place as day 7.
Day 9: flight out at 1659. Spend the morning doing whatever we’ve missed, either in the south or back in San Juan.

2023.04.01 02:24 OalBlunkont TCM April Schedule, Looks Totally Awesome.

I had to do a lot of weird editing to convert it from copypasted PDF to something reddit wouldn't munge too much. I've seen a lot of these and there are a bunch I've been wanting to see for a while. God I hate PDFs. When I'm king it will be a capital offense to use them for anything other than formatting for printers. Reddit really needs to improve their formatting capabilities as well, single line spacing without making everthing look like code and columnar arranging too. These features have been available since the days of typewriters.
The Idjits don't mention the timezone to which they are referring.

2023.04.01 01:58 ElAvestruz [For Hire] Tech, Fitness, Entertainment, or General Content Writer

Hello everyone, I'd like to offer my services as a writer to anyone who needs some content made.
I specialize namely in blogs, web content, evergreen content, articles, listicles, How-to guides, and technical writing. I can cover a variety of topics, but I specialize namely in tech, healthy and fitness, and entertainment stories. If you'd like to know if I cover your topics, feel free to get in touch with me. I can tell you that I don't cover medical topics.
I'm familiar with lots of different forms of content and the software that goes with it. I'm familiar with WordPress, Vanilla, Greenhouse, and Shareforce content management systems. I'm knowledgeable in SEO and I know a little bit of graphic design thanks to my technical writing days. 1000-word
Price
For short website content, like an About page or landing page, I charge from $20 to $80. The price depends on word count, how much research I'll have to do, image, and SEO.
Typically, I charge $50 for a 300-word article where I do the research, SEO, backlinks, and images if need be. For higher word counts, I charge. For How-to guides, I charge $0.20 per word. It'll require me to get a lot of images and do a lot of research. To give you an idea, a 1000-word guide would be $200.
I can get you the short web content, articles, and blog post pretty quickly; assuming I don't have another project beforehand. How-to guides will take me a couple of days for me to do research and get proper images. I can revise however many times you'd like.
If you'd like to see samples, I'll leave my LinkedIn account here which I use as a portfolio. If you'd like even samples, feel free to DM me. Thank you and take care.

The JJW Law firm-
Namesake: Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol
User: Johnson Johnson Wrong Esq.
Wearable stand
Stats:
Power: Ø
Speed: Ø
Range: A
Durability: E
Precision: E
Potential: C
Appearance:
A pair of oversized checkered boots and gauntlets summoned onto the user. Each piece is connected to the user's spine and each other via metallic cords.
Ability:
DWM’s primary ability allows the user to completely control the movements of others, so long as they precisely mimic the target’s movements beforehand. The period of control’s duration lasts as long as the period of mimicry, and forces targets to move as the user does. Simply, the user copies the target’s movements, then puppets them to follow theirs.
The ability can be applied to people, humanoid stands, corpses, and would eventually extend to any intentionally humanoid object.
While capable of harming stands and serving as a minimal amount of defensive armor, they provide the user with no additional strength.
User information/backstory:
Johnson Johnson Wrong began, as many do, from humble beginnings. A lower class kid from south Georgia, he managed to skid under the eye of the law despite his sketchy dealings and unsavory compatriots. This not only gave him powerful experience and valuable connections, but the money he needed to fulfill his dream-paying his way through law school! He passed the bar with flying colors, and moved on to his duties as a defense attorney.
He was very good at his job. He was not nationally known, and had no desire to be, but was the first choice for legal assistance in certain circles. There was a certain je ne sais quoi to Johnson that lent itself to great feats within the courtroom. He himself went on trial twice for suspected murder, yet was acquitted both times while representing himself. This understated profile, remarkable yet unorthodox skill, and tendency to occupy the same establishments as many of his clientele were enough to catch the eye of a wealthy beneficiary.
Vincent Niche, multimillionaire and shipping empire giant, has wandered into their sights seeking mercenaries of versatile skillsets to embark on a mission alongside him. The danger would be steep, but the reward steeper. The unusual situation this high profile individual was putting himself in, and the relatively seedy location he was employing "no questions asked" mercenaries from implied suspicious business. Johnson volunteered...as this man seemed likely to require a very expensive lawyer.
His application, as well as several others', were eagerly accepted. The freelancers were introduced to each other, some having already been acquainted. Soon, additional information was provided and they were gathered in Niche's office. They were given a group briefing, specifying the mission details as 'recovering an artifact' deep within the Amazon Rainforest. They would convene at his property in Brazil in one month's time. They were to prepare by then, and board a cruise heading to their destination complimentary of Niche. They would be given a personalized weapon and equipped before boarding a helicopter and exploring various sites. There was a high possibility of life-threatening combat, as Niche's estranged sister, Gretchen, was pursuing the same goal with her own highly skilled team. They would be paid five million dollars each upon mission completion. They were then dismissed without elaboration. Johnson was fascinated, his mind racing at how to take full advantage of his new rich, yet clearly eccentric and naïve client. Though, there were preparations to be made. He took the squad suit shopping in an effort to make his less appearance-conscious coworkers more presentable, and prepared his wit for the trip. This would be quite the fascinating outing.
Their relaxing journey was more eventful than anticipated as they were forced to combat a group of attackers bearing a full armory of weapons and explosives. Yet, the incident became more and more bizarre as it progressed. Each and every one of the ridiculously well-armed assailants had the same face, voice, and general incompetence. This was somehow a literal one man army consisting of the same person over and over. What more, they vanished in a burst of light upon sustaining any injury. They left no trace of their existence aside from their dropped weapons, and the confusion only arose as they shot their way into the security office their ringleader was holed up in. The man, identifying himself as 'Doopli Trooper', was far more articulate and competent than his subordinates, despite being the same person once again. He was alert, a skilled combatant, and seemed to be miming finger guns.
A small scuffle broke out before Doopli threw himself out a window. Yet, he seemingly landed on his back 30 feet down completely unharmed. Throughout the ensuing chase, he amassed more of himself out of thin air. They were used as meat shields, diversions, and gymnastic partners as the group had him on the run.
This was becoming a problem.
It took nearly an hour overall, but eventually Doopli would slow down due to exhaustion. He was apprehended and fell unconscious. It was strange, though. The man seemed on the verge of death despite not sustaining a single injury. The ship would proceed to harbor, being met by Speedwagon employees as soon as it arrived. Johnson’s suspicions only grew alongside the other mercenaries as Doopli was taken into the company’s custody and their squad was whisked away to an underground bunker within the rainforest.
Niche greeted them, the group immediately demanding answers. The supernatural experience of a magically appearing clone army had made this job somehow even more suspect than it already was, and their benefactor NEEDED to explain himself.
Niche was dismissive, telling them that all would be understood in due time as per the outcome of Section 7E of their contracts.
Section 7E…Johnson had combed over the contract a multitude of times before signing, but that paragraph was particularly odd. Seemingly nonsense meant to fill a word count or cover every hypothetical, “The possible life-risking effects of new skill or weapon acquisition” released liability of death or injury during the process of equipping employees prior to mission start. No matter how unorthodox the methods. This seemed to be a roundabout way of covering gun safety and workers comp, among a litany of other factors.
These thoughts traversed Johnson’s mind as they were directed to stand in a line and introduce themselves to a one-armed old man Niche referred to as ‘the SWF boss’. The man took each of their hands, giving a strange riddle in a pleased tone as he moved along the line. Johnson felt uneasy as the man looked into his eyes, telling him “You bring others to move at your pace, dancing to your own tune with high ambition.” What this meant was unclear, but deep down, it felt as if his very being had been exposed and peered into. Producing an arrow from thin air, they were told to observe a screen to the left for further instruction. After the concerning news that they were the third attempted team, everything went black. He woke up an indeterminate amount of time later, the man sitting by his bedside. Johnson’s groggy realization upon blinking reality back into existence was clear: The contract was shit.
His compatriots seemed to have similar feelings, though their complaints were quickly silenced by Niche, or more accurately, the strange being they noticed standing beside him. They were introduced to the concept of ‘stands’, and told that their survival meant they were worthy. They merely needed to practice and they would uncover their hidden potential. The next day was precisely that, as the mercs one by one discovered their abilities. During this time, they were also given the true details of their mission. An immortal bird, a fellow stand user, was in possession of a coin originating from Niche’s ancestor. This coin contained their stand, which granted its user a lifespan proportional to their material wealth. They were to assist Niche to breach the bird’s solid gold temple and retrieve the coin before his sister could. Once again, it was nonsense.
Johnson looked down at his new gauntlets as the others greeted the final employee, whose arrival was delayed by a plane crash. This…this would be interesting. A whole breadth of possibilities were opened before Johnson. Now, he just needed to complete this assignment. The journey would have a rough start, as their base was attacked by Gretchen’s crew before they were fully prepared. They were forced to evacuate into the jungle, and the race towards a solid gold temple began prematurely. Their first encounter was bizarre, to say the least. The group came across an abandoned logging camp full of instruments, and were swiftly attacked by a flying frog and a tree covered in mouths. Johnson spent a majority of the fight as a saxophone.
The encounters only increased in brutality from that point forward, as Gretchen’s crew relentlessly attacked them at every turn. Despite this, they won at every turn, even taking in an ‘ally’ from the other side, and eventually a prisoneguide that turned traitor the second they could. These fights provided immense practice for the mercs, and Johnson unlocked more and more of their power. He was the lynchpin of several fights, and eventually learned he could control anything intended to be humanoid, including stands, stand constructs, and corpses… During the final showdown with the bulk of Gretchen’s remaining crew, the team was separated in a building collapse initiated by one of the enemies and aided by an encroaching army of plant monsters. Johnson struggled against a small team of enemy users that kept them under constant surveillance and control via their ability synergy. All he could see was a bound man in a straight jacket and a state of sensory deprivation. A second stand swam through the floor, watching him…just staring. They seemed to have perfect control of the area somehow, and Johnson’s inability to control the bound man made an approach seem impossible. Though, he was smarter, better at bluffing, and was able to kill their heavy hitter through ridiculous means that involved a corpse, several guns, and using his gauntlets like…gloves. He approached the other two members of the team, who had been obscured by a chunk of rubble.
They immediately surrendered, guiding him through the crumbling facility and using their abilities to heal him. They additionally insisted they join up as a newly formed team, as Johnson had just killed their third member. While reluctant at first, Johnson realized how advantageous this was, and accepted their deal as the first two lackeys for his “law firm”.
The escape after his encounter was just as perilous, with the crew frantically avoiding prehensile plants and a giant vegetation monster Johnson was able to control and hold back. He gave out, but bought the few precious seconds their helicopter escape route needed to arrive.
They were able to get an actual night’s sleep, and headed out the next morning to breach the temple. The entire structure was solid gold, and filled to the brim with ancient doubloons. They were confronted by an absolute kaiju of a stand, which swiftly dealt with Gretchen’s last minion before turning its soul-reading gaze at them. The fight was horrifying, and resulted in physical and mental trauma before a precise shot from the resident sniper killed the bird. They had lost one crew member in the process of securing the coin during the fight, but it was over. The stand collapsed into itself as all went quiet.
Right afterwards, Gretchen confronted them and demanded the coin. It took the combined effort of the entire crew to overcome her Art of War and overwhelming physical strength in a manner that was frankly overkill.
Now it was over.

The temple started collapsing, forcing the crew to make it out by the skin of their teeth at the end of a very, very long mission.
NOW it was over, actually.
Niche was very pleased with his crew and their success, giving them their reward and whatever they could carry from the golden temple. Many of the mercenaries continued working with Niche or the SWF as everyone looked towards the future, but Johnson had other plans.
His reward was put towards his own Law Firm, compound, and manpower. Further pushing his stand to the limits revealed he had control over nonliving humanoid objects like the statues that would now line his yard. He began scouting out people from different walks of life as bodyguards or mercenaries with select skills. Most importantly, he needed stand users. Anyone in a rough spot that could be recruited or manipulated was high priority, and his growing underground reputation as the best stand user attorney in the business was a fantastic boon. Many of his cases resulted in the recruitment of valuable allies and minions, from clients to other attorneys. Continuing to this day, he has high hopes, and equally high ambitions…perhaps that immortality-granting coin should belong to him…he deserved it, after all...

Integrated Phenomenon stand

Range: E* (Activation; no range limitation once ‘plugged in’.)
Durability: C
Precision: A
Potential: A
Appearance:
The user’s head appears concave and mechanical. Dozens of dual input wires float around their skull as if plugged into an invisible sphere.
Ability:
The user can ‘plug’ others into their stand by inserting one of its many wires into the air in front of them. That line is now connected to that specific individual and cannot be reused until ‘unplugged’ and reinserted. This effect lasts until the former happens, or a recipient dies. Senses, sensations, thoughts, and even injuries can be transferred and sent between willing members of the network with absolute freedom and few limits, passing through the user and their stand.
User information/backstory:
Team leader and only competent strategist of the trio, J.D. stressfully held his crew of mercs together through job after job with a solid record of success. His ability was pure utility, and the only users he could acquire were oddballs with little direct combative ability, but his (relatively) keen mind lent itself to develop a system of synergy for their strange and limited powersets. In his system, the three would be constantly connected via 「Operator」, allowing precise use of 「S&M」 through third-person vision courtesy of 「Wolfpack」. This method served them well through many missions, though they were overcome by Johnson, despite him being a hare away from death, when weak link Bell’s stand was caught and its eyes covered.
One line is always connected, though he refuses to reveal to whom. He simply dodges the question, a sadness behind his eyes.

Ability:
「Wolfpack」 is a simple stand with a simple ability-it is a submarine that can dip into any material as if it were liquid, with two separate options for sight. The user can see out of both its face and periscope at any time, even both simultaneously for split vision. This is relegated to separate eyes. If they so desire, the user may enter the cramped, hollow interior of 「Wolfpack」 for travel purposes.
User information/backstory:
Hawaiian shirt clad recon specialist of the team, his stand was the most technically active portion of J.D. strategy. 「Wolfpack」 was required to be attentive and observant at all times, but this job was rarely stressed over. Lax and carefree, Bell’s attitude would often take the brunt of punishment or blame in bad situations as the punching bag, whether it was his fault or not.

The heavy hitter of the team, his ability is only viable through the use of their leader’s strategy, though he was never seen as more than a tool in this regard. The others found him unsettling…for good reason, and his death at the hands of Johnson was only mourned so far as it limited their potency as a team.

2023.04.01 00:56 dragon_morgan I completed a bingo card with all indie/self published titles!

I completed a bingo card with all indie/self published titles!

bingo card in all its glory
For Bingo this year I thought it would be fun to complete a card using only self- or indie-published books. By definition of indie published I mostly mean anything that uses KDP or Ingram Spark or similar as their main distributor, but if someone from a very small trad press managed to sneak through my filter consider this covering my bum and saying I picked things that were indie “enough” :)
So then, without further ado, the mini reviews!
A Book from Fantasy’s Top LGBTQIA List
Substitution, but within the spirit of the thing: School Setting (2020)
The Enchanter by Tobias Begley
Hard Mode: N/A
Came up against a challenge on the very first square because the only indie published book on the somewhat limited list was Arcane Ascension, which I’d already read, and didn’t really want to use my one reread on that. So I started looking around for other LGBTQ books to use as my substitution and ended up picking up Enchanter, which turned out to be… a lot like Arcane Ascension, actually. Evander is a socially awkward young gay man who is off to magic school to become an enchanter. What he lacks in raw magical ability he makes up for in determination and cleverness, and he spends much of the book pushing the magic system to its absolute limit, all while meanwhile navigating a budding first romance with the handsome nobleman he met on the train. Meanwhile someone is letting eldritch horrors into the school grounds, and it’s up to Evander and his new boyfriend to figure out the mystery and avoid taking the blame themselves. I enjoyed this book quite a lot, though it leans heavily into a lot of the tropes of both the magic school and progression fantasy genres. I’d say if you enjoyed Arcane Ascension and Mother of Learning, you will probably definitely enjoy this one too.
Weird Ecology
Iron Truth by S.A. Tholin
Hard Mode: yes
Over a century ago, Joy Somerset entered cryogenic sleep and boarded a colony ship, expecting to awaken on an idyllic new world. Instead she wakes up on Cato, a dusty hellscape inhabited only by giant spiders, hostile locals, and red lichen that is probably definitely up to no good. Rigid and religiously devout military commander Cassimir from the theocratic Primaterre Protectorate seems like her ticket back to civilization, but neither of them will go anywhere until they can unravel Cato’s mysteries. This book won the first ever SPSFC contest and I can see why, because even though it was a somewhat long book, it kept me turning pages all the way through. Part space opera, part cosmic horror, I felt like I was racing to the end just to figure out what was going on. If I had any complaints it was that the romance felt a little bit forced — here is a hot girl, here is a hot guy, they are designated to end up together because the plot says so. In such a long book there ought to have been plenty of breathing room for their romance to grow organically but I never really felt like I got that, it was just hawtness at first sight and that was that. Still highly recommend to anyone who likes space opera.
Two or More Authors
NACL: Eye of the Storm by Allegra Pescatore and E. Sands
Hard Mode: no
Their planet seems like a perfect paradise, with one glaring flaw: the gods, when they created the world, forgot to include salt, an ingredient necessary for human life. In order to hastily cover up their mistake, they concentrated a world’s worth of salt in a giant pillar in the middle of the ocean, intending for it to distribute over time. But humans being humans, they unfortunately invented capitalism first, and now a corrupt corporation rigidly controls the salt pillar. Thanks to a meddlesome precog who might or might not himself be a god, a ragtag crew comes together, formed of an ex corporate slave, a grumpy doctor, a pair of pirates who smuggle salt to those in need, and a woman with dangerous magical powers who’d honestly rather just be left alone. Together, they hatch a plan to take down the corporation once and for all. They have to learn to trust each other first, though, and that is easier said than done. Well all right. If you know me you know I’m a sucker for a story about a ragtag crew that has to come together to defeat the big bad. This was a great story and it really delivered in that respect. My main complaint was that there are a lot of POV characters and many of them sort of blend together in the beginning. They all have their own reasons for being angry at the corporation but when you have multiple characters whose *main* personality trait is “GRR I HATE THE COMPANY” they kind of run together for the first act until they start to distinguish themselves. My nickname for this book while I was reading it was “Salty Bitches” for a reason. For real, though, I really did enjoy this one, and if you want a nice escapist fantasy about sticking it to the corporate man, this is the book for you.
Historical SFF
Scales and Sensibility by Stephanie Burgis
Hard Mode: no, sigh, all I had to do was find something not set in one of two countries, and guess where this one is set
When Elinor’s parents died and left her and her sisters penniless, she has no choice but to move in with her obnoxious relatives and, Cinderella-like, work as a servant for her terrible cousin. She plans to abide this with determined British stoicness until she can finally leave and become a governess or something, but if there is one thing she cannot abide, it is dragon abuse. So she finds herself running from home with a stolen dragon and only a few coins to her name, and is nearly run off the road by a handsome gentleman off to court her very same horrible cousin. And that’s when the real shenanigans begin. This book was a delight from start to finish. It is one of the finalists for this year’s SPFBO which I think is incredibly well-deserved. It shares a lot in common with its fellow finalist Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide, making 2022 evidently a big year for downtrodden British ladies hiding dragons from their terrible relatives. I recommend this one to anyone who likes cozy fantasy, regency era, and fantasy of manners.
Set in Space
The Last Gifts of the Universe by Rory August
Hard Mode: I can’t honestly remember if the kids are from Earth or not but I’m going to go with yes, so no on the hard mode
When humans finally invented faster-than-light travel, they expected to be welcomed or mistrusted by a greater galactic community. What they found instead were hundreds of abandoned planets, remnants of a civilization wiped clean by some unknown catastrophe. Archaeologists are desperate to find out what went wrong, as are the corrupt corporations who control humanity, because what happened to one civilization could happen to ours, as well. The Last Gifts of the Universe stars Scout, a small-time independent archaeologist, and her younger brother, as they race to find precious recordings of the lost civilization before their corporate rivals can. Despite being set in the backdrop of a mystery that spans centuries and light years and potentially multiple-world-ending stakes, this story is really more about the more immediate human (and sentient-non-human) relationships of the characters. It is a story about Scout’s relationship with their brother, their complicated memories with their parents, and their growing frenemyship with the corporate soldier who wants the same things they do. It is also about Biryeena, the alien politician who lived centuries ago, leaving her recorded memories for future archaeologists to find. I enjoyed this book very much, but I think I might have enjoyed it a lot more if we were not presented with such galaxy-spanning stakes only to be told that those stakes were not the point. They could have just been ordinary space archaeologists without trying to solve Space Plague. I also wasn’t sure how I felt about the ancient alien civilization as it is presented. Making them very human-seeming made them more relatable to the reader, but I found it strained suspension of disbelief, just a little, that they would so closely follow a somewhat idealized version of modern Western civilization, in which the alien narrator goes to a four-year college, struggles to find a job upon graduation, gets married, and eventually runs for office in a vaguely democratic society. Still, I recommend this one to fans of Becky Chambers and anyone who wants a more intimate character-focused space opera.

Battle Mage by Peter Flannery

Falco Dante longs to be a dragon rider and fight the demon hordes, but unfortunately, he is shunned by his community for being a sick weakling, and worse yet, being the son of a traitor who turned against the town. But when a dragon summoning goes horribly wrong and the townsfolk are forced to flee, he learns he has the rare potential to become a battle mage, and may be the one to repair the bond between humans and dragons and defeat the demons once and for all. Of course as many of you know I love a good training montage story, as well as “battle school” types of settings. And dragon riders. I love those two. So even going in I knew this book was going to be a good time. It is long, incredibly long, but I actually admire Flannery for keeping the story contained to one book, because it could have easily been a 10 book series full of doorstoppers if he wanted to stretch things out. I did think the pacing dragged a little bit in places, the blow-by-blow battle scenes were too frequent and drawn-out for my personal tastes, and the part where they’re fleeing the town in the beginning seemed to take forever when it really didn’t need to. If you’re a fan of a lot of the classic fantasy tropes, however, this is not one to miss.
Anti-Hero
Where Blood Runs Gold by A.C. Cross
Hard Mode: no
Errol Thorpe is your typical old west sheriff who refuses to take shit from anyone. He has his own strong moral compass, but will not hesitate to bust heads at the slightest provocation. This of course becomes both a strength and a complication when he finds himself in custody of a young woman he needs to keep safe, while also unraveling the mystery of the creepy magic dust that’s making people go crazy. This book is incredibly tightly plotted and had me eagerly turning pages all the way through. I think what I liked the most about it was the general voice to the writing, I really felt like I was getting into Sheriff Errol Thorpe’s head. If you’re a fan of gritty types of westerns like HBO’s Deadwood I think you’ll really enjoy Where Blood Runs Gold.
Book Club OR Readalong Book
The Wolf and the She-Bear by Morgan Stang (RAB December 2022)
Hard Mode: yes :)
“Retired” mercenary Samantha Redwyne just wants a quiet peaceful life in the middle of nowhere. But when a man from her past begs her help transporting some Probably Definitely Stolen Cargo, she reluctantly agrees. Naturally, trouble follows quickly at their heels. This book was both very fast paced and also novella length so it made for a very quick read. I kind of almost wish it had been a little bit longer, though, because I would have liked to get to know the characters a bit more, given them room to breathe. I feel like we never really get to know who Samantha is as a person, and so when big reveals are made about her past, they don’t quite pack the emotional punch they’re probably meant to. There are also two male POV characters, ostensibly on opposite sides, who badly run together to me as both of their chief personality traits are “murder everyone in sight.” I did enjoy one of the minor POV characters, a would-be housewife who has turned to banditry to support her family, because it was kind of intriguing how much she tells herself she’s better than those OTHER bandits when she really, really isn’t. Ultimately this book was either just a little too short or a little too grimdark for my tastes, but it was intriguing enough I can definitely see myself reading something else of Stang’s along the way.
Cool Weapon
Year of the Sword books 1-3 by Dakota Krout
Hard Mode: yes, the sword’s name is Sarge
okay I’m being a LITTLE bit cheaty here because what I actually read for bingo was Dokeshi March, book 3 in the series, but I feel like it makes more sense to do the mini-review of book 1, Lord January, so bear with me. This series. THIS SERIES. I’m not even really sure where to start. Many centuries ago, due to a conflict, the world was split into twelve districts, one for each month of the year. Each district has one defining trait that makes it stand out from the others. In District January, they grow all the food, and everyone is very much into eating as much as possible. The fatter you are, the more status you are perceived to have in January. February is the polar opposite, where everyone drinks wheatgrass smoothies and is obsessed with fitness. In March, everyone is into gambling, and so it goes. Our hero, Grant Leap, is ostracized from his native January District for only being a little bit fat and also being born on leap day which is a big no-no in Calendar Culture. All that changes, however, when he finds a magic talking sword, Sarge, who agrees to train him to become powerful, at a cost. If he doesn’t defeat all the calendar lords by the end of the year, his life is forfeit. If you think this premise sounds ridiculous, well, yes it is. It is 100% exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. And yet I could not for the life of me put it down. What can I say. I love training montages. This is a LitRPG-style progression fantasy with visible stat screens and leveling up, and I think it’s a fun, albeit ludicrous, addition to the genre. Unfortunately the series seems to be on hiatus currently while the author works on other projects, but I’ll definitely be continuing when it picks back up again.
Revolutions and Rebellions
Blade’s Edge by Virginia McClain
Hard Mode: Sort of? The action is more human-focused, but they’d not get far without the rebellion
Centuries ago, Fantasy Not Quite Japan was a brutal monarchy, ruled by a violent and corrupt mage queen. After she was defeated, the pendulum swung the other way, and now women and girls are brutally subjugated, especially those who can use magic — when magic-using girls are admitted to exist at all. Mishi and Taka were best friends in their orphanage home, each dreading the day they would be separated to be sold into either servitude or a loveless and abusive marriage. As it happens, they are both taken away on the same day, though to neither of those things. When Taka’s secret magical abilities are revealed, she is shipped off to a brutal school where women with some small magical gift are taught to be healers and midwives, but not without going through a ton of abuse first. Mishi fares better, being adopted into a warrior family who works against the patriarchal government and trains women to fight in secret. Years later, the two friends meet again when Taka flees from her evil magic school and instead joins the rebellion. I quite enjoyed this book, the way the two girls’ stories diverge and then weave back together. The pacing is tight and intriguing and there was never any point where I felt bored, and yet we are also given the space to really get to know and care about the characters. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Name in the Title
India Bones and the Ship of the Dead by Set Sytes
Hard Mode: yes
India Bones lives in a quiet portside town dreaming of a life of adventure like his famous pirate father who disappeared many years ago. His opportunity arrives when a ghost ship makes port and the ghosts and skeletons dance on the shore, and India sneaks off to join them. While he quickly finds that a ghost ship is no place for a living boy, this soon opens the door to discoveries about his past and new adventures ahead. This was a fun adventure romp, a bit disjointed as India is yanked from one misadventure to the next, but entertaining all the way through. The only slightly confusing thing about it was I was never quite sure what age group it was meant for. India himself is quite young and for a lot of the book it reads very much like a middle-grade novel, but it also has things like pre-teens getting drunk, presented uncritically. Still this made for a good pirate adventure and I plan to continue this series eventually.
Author Uses Initials
Heavy by J.J. Thorn
Hard Mode: I’m certain I have no idea
Everyone in the kingdom dreams of being granted an affinity when they turn 16 and going off to magic school. Terrence realizes that chances are he’ll never get any affinity at all, so he’s surprised and rather alarmed when he’s given a rare and unusual one: the ability to see and manipulate weight. Rarity is all well and good, but will it help him become a dungeon-crawler like he hopes? Heavy is another magic school LitRPG progression fantasy with stats and level-ups. I seemed to be big on those this Bingo. This is another book where I’m not really sure how to write a review for it. It’s definitely rough in places; the author seems to have some interesting ideas about how punctuation works, and the truth is not a whole lot HAPPENS in this book. There are hints of some sinister goings-on in the greater dungeon-delving community, but for the most part Terrence just goes to school, stands up to bullies, makes friends, and tries to figure out how to use his unusual weight powers. But you know what, despite all that, I really enjoyed this book. It was cosy and enjoyable and made me want to go to magic school, and I look forward to reading more in this series.

The Blood of Crows by Alex C. Pierce
Hard Mode: yes
Ren thought his days of violence and bloodshed were over when someone finally bought out his indentured servitude as a state-sanctioned thief in a brutal army unit. Unfortunately, he was wrong. When one last thieving job goes terribly wrong and his friend and mentor goes missing, Ren finds himself framed for the murders of several prominent noblewomen. Now he has to solve the mystery and clear his name before it’s too late. This was a fun book with a fast-paced plot and a lit of twisty turns that I didn’t see coming, plus a protagonist who has a strong voice and is entertaining to read about. I liked the fact that the main character doesn’t have any magic powers in a world where everyone else does. There are some other series that do that, like Codex Alera, but it’s still rare enough to be refreshing. However it does this one thing that’s fairly common in this particular “snarky guy gets in trouble” subgenre where he simply cannot catch a break, ever, and I have to wonder how he has not collapsed from exhaustion already, not to mention how he manages to survive so many beatings. Still, a fun book and a good debut, highly recommend.
Urban Fantasy
Oath Broken by Jarryd Smith
Hard Mode: Alas, no
Once a famed monster hunter, Kaleb just wants to leave that life behind and live a normal life. But when dragged against his will to his friend’s wedding, and discovering there’s definitely something suspicious about the bridal party, he is forcefully dragged back into a life he wanted little to do with. This was an enjoyable, quick read, although I wish there were just a bit more character development as some things feel rushed and I had to scramble to remember who was who. I think this series definitely shows potential, though, and I look forward to seeing where it goes.
Set in Africa
The Windweaver’s Storm by Antoine Bandele
Hard Mode: yes
This is the second book in the TJ Young and the Orishas series. The first one, The Gatekeeper’s Staff, takes place in the United States and therefore doesn’t qualify for the Africa bingo square, but this one takes place in Nigeria and therefore does. After getting up to all kinds of heroics at summer camp last year, TJ Young has at last been offered a place at the prestigious Ifa Academy. Unfortunately, he has a lot of challenges ahead of him as his power still behaves erratically, and he made a promise to a god that he might not be able to keep. I really enjoyed this follow-up to the first book, especially the depiction of the magic school. Hogwarts has absolutely nothing on how cool Ifa Academy is. I somehow ended up reading a lot of magic school stories this year and this one was by far my favorite. The main characters’ teenage drama, while exhausting in the way that teenage drama often is, was also nonetheless well-realized and fun to read about. My only slight complaint was that I felt the ending was a little rushed, and I wanted a better explanation of certain occurrences near the end. But if you’re interested in something similar to Harry Potter or Percy Jackson with a majority-POC cast, this is the book for you.
Non-Human Protagonist
The Skin by J.E. Hannaford
Hard Mode: She does spend most of the book in human form so I’d say not really
When unscrupulous humans steal her sister’s skin, a young selkie sacrifices her own freedom so that her sister can go free. She is forced to work for the humans she despises, at least until she can win her way to freedom and get her sister’s skin back. This was a really unique book in that it combines ancient Celtic mythology with a post-apocalyptic setting, something I’d never really seen before. Also, it has selkies, who are among some of the coolest mythical creatures. But I like seals so I might be a bit biased. The story starts out with three separate timelines that then join together in the second act, and I thought that part of the storytelling was cleverly done. Selkie’s journey is a powerful one, because she starts out very angry and unwilling to trust anyone but eventually makes deep friendships as the story continues. If I were to have any nitpicks I’d say that things come together almost a little too cleanly at the end, and characters I was certain were sus turn out to be squeaky clean, but that’s hardly a massive flaw. I recommend this one to anyone who likes seals, boats, mythology, shapeshifters, or post-apocalyptic settings.
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey
Duckett and Dyer: Dicks for Hire by G.M. Nair
Hard Mode: I’m not sure, probably not, there is some time travel
Michael Duckett is starting to get annoyed with his best friend and roommate Stephanie Dyer, who refuses to take life seriously. Whether it’s trying to get out of his dead end job or trying to find a girlfriend, it seems like she’s always ruining his plans with her antics. When they start getting contacted about an ad in the paper selling them as a pair of private detectives, he thinks it must be another prank. What he gets instead is a zany jaunt across the multiverse that will strain and perhaps save their friendship. This book was delightful overall, and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. It never at any point takes itself too seriously so if you want a Super Serious Time Travel Book this probably isn’t the one for you. But it nevertheless has a lot of heart and I grew quite attached to both main characters by the end. I did think some of the multiverse destinations were just a little too zany as to strain my willing suspension of disbelief, however, such as the world with the giant hamburger monsters. Still, this book was great fun.
Five SFF Short Stories
The Alchemy of Sorrow by Various
Hard Mode: Yes
I find it hard to review short story collections because there are so many of them and each is going to have their own strengths and weaknesses. However this is one of the best short story collections I’ve read in awhile. There was not a single story in it that I found dragged at any point; I enjoyed all of them immensely and found a lot of new authors whose work I will definitely be checking out. The theme of the anthology is dealing with grief so just by definition a lot of these stories will rip your heart out and stomp on it, but there is also an undercurrent of hope throughout. 5/5, highly recommend.
Features Mental Health
The Heretic’s Guide to Homecoming by Sienna Tristen
Hard Mode: Yes
This book. OH BOY THIS BOOK. I had actually hoped to read the second book in the duology for this square but I didn’t quite finish in time, but thankfully I reread book 1 to refresh my memory going in, so I’m going to use that as my one allowed reread. Consider this a mini-review for both books, however, with the caveat that I am still working on reading the ending. Ronoah Genoveffa Ellizzi-Denna Pilanovani suffers from a lot of anxiety and self doubt. After failing as both a priest and a scholar, Ronoah finds himself lost in a foreign coffee shop, unsure what to do or how to face the future. Enter Reilin, a mysterious stranger who offers to take him to the beautiful and sacred Pilgrim State — as long as he follows a specific set of rules. Ronoah’s journey takes him half way across the world, where he encounters vibrant cultures, wonderful friends, and mysterious ancient ruins, while almost in passing discovering the lost secrets of the fallen Shalledrim empire. But if you’re looking for action and adventure around every corner, this is probably not the book for you. Ronoah’s journey is internal far more than it is external, all about figuring out who he is and what is important to him and how, at last, to have faith in himself. I fully admit that Ronoah is not the protagonist for everyone, as his internal monologue and negative self talk can be A LOT, especially in the first book. But this series is one of the most beautiful pieces of character work I’ve read in a long time, all told via beautiful, poetic prose that almost seems to sing from the page. I’d say fans of Robin Hobb will also enjoy this series.
Self-Published or Indie Publisher
Dreams of Dust by Lily Anne Crow
Hard Mode: Yes
Technically all of these books would count for this square but I will go with this one because as of typing this it only has two Goodreads reviews, one of which is mine, which is a crying shame because this book deserves better, but also means it handily counts for hard mode. Pampered city kid Thaniel Swift has studied long and hard to be a wayfinder, creating maps with his beautiful magic atlas. He’s beyond thrilled to get to go on his first expedition, only to find out he still has a lot to learn when they get sucked into a missing person investigation and find themselves pit against an undead queen who is willing to destroy the world to end her grief. This book has all the things I enjoy most in a fantasy story: secret ancient ruins, a colorful cast of characters who are suspicious of each other at first but eventually come together like family, and scary evil bad guys who commit their atrocities out of misplaced love. The world building is absolutely top notch, with a setting that feels lived in. I really wish more people would read this series so I could gush about it more.
Award Finalist, But Not Won
Shadow of a Dead God by Patrick Samphire
Hard Mode: Yes
Shadow of a Dead God was a SPFBO finalist a few years ago. It features Mennik Thorne, a down on his luck mage who gave up a life of privilege to try and make it on his own. This goes about as well as you might expect, when a routine probably-not-legal job for his oldest and best friend blows up in his face and he winds up with half the city out to get him. This book shares a lot of similarities with the Blood of Crows, reviewed above — snarky guy has a routine job go terribly wrong, gets roped into a conspiracy, and survives far more beatings than is healthy. But if I were to assign comp titles to this book I’d say it’s like the Dresden Files meets Locke Lamora. Mennik is a delightful character overall and I enjoyed being in his sarcastic head.
BIPOC Author
Guns of Penance by Mari Kurisato
Hard Mode: Yes, Mari is Nakawē Ojibwe indigenous
One of the really nice things about Bingo is that it seems like every year there’s a book I might not have necessarily picked up on my own but end up thoroughly enjoying. This book isn’t in my usual wheelhouse — ultra-violent post-apocalyptic settings are usually too edgy for me — but I’d purchased the book awhile back in order to support the author, and since I had it on my kindle anyway and it qualified for hard mode, I decided to give it a go. Wow! For a book about people murdering each other in a post-nuclear wasteland, this book was actually a ton of fun. There are four main female POV characters, whose stories weave in and out of each other: a computer scientist on the run after a major discovery, her rich heiress ex girlfriend, a drug addicted gangster looking to make a clean start, and a retired mercenary who is getting too old for this nonsense. Since all of these women are in somewhat violent roles I was worried they would start to blur together but each has a very distinct voice and was thoroughly enjoyable to read about. Highly recommended if you’re after a more diverse and female-led version of Mad Max.
Shapeshifters
Sidetracked by S.K. Kelley
Hard mode: yes
I received this book as part of an indie author Secret Santa exchange last December. Studious and socially awkward, Jayde wonders how she’s going to survive her first summer vacation in college alone without her more extroverted best friend and roommate. Her summer takes a surprising turn when she meets an attractive stranger named Ice, who turns out to be, of all things, a cat shapeshifter. She is then dragged into a complicated world of hidden supernatural happenings and soon realizes she might be well in over her head. This book starts off seeming like a fairly boilerplate supernatural romance in the vein of Twilight — awkward every-woman falls in love with super hot supernatural dude. However it becomes increasingly clear as the story goes on that this is not that kind of story. Watching the story turn from paranormal romance to paranormal thriller was really fascinating and I found myself staying up late reading just to find out what was going on. This story is incredibly slow-burn, and I worry that some potential readers might give up too soon. But I absolutely can’t wait to continue this series.
No Ifs, Ands, or Buts
No Land for Heroes by Cal Black
Hard Mode: Yes
I had to scan the list of forbidden words like six times to confirm it fits but I’m pretty sure it does. Anyway, this was an enjoyable weird western. Elven Deputy Berry is willing to do anything, even bend the law she is ostensibly sworn to protect, in order to keep her small town and her chosen family safe. But when a train robbery gone wrong pulls her back into a past she’d rather forget, she must face her demons once and for all. For the most part I really enjoyed this story throughout. There were a couple aspects that I was ehhhh on; for instance, in this setting elves take the place of Native Americans, leading me to wonder why there are no actual Native Americans (there are white and Black humans in this setting, so why not Indigenous?). I also would have liked more fantasy in my fantasy — despite there being elves and dragons and Legally Distinct Tieflings, those things almost feel like window dressing on what could have otherwise been perfectly excellent historical fiction. But No Land for Heroes nevertheless had excellent characters and an excellent plot and I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next.
Family Matters
Awakening the Gods by Kristin Gleeson
Hard Mode: …it’s complicated
Saoirse’s life has gone downhill since she graduated from university. Unable to hold down a series of dead end jobs, the only times she truly feels alive is when she is playing music at her favorite pub in Dublin. Everything is turned on its head when her father mysteriously passes away, and a woman claiming to be her grandmother offers to let her stay with her in rural Cork. There, she meets a hot blacksmith, and comes to learn that her entire life might have been constructed on lies and that she is, in fact, the reincarnation of the goddess Brigid. Unfortunately, Balor, the ancient enemy of the Irish gods, is also back in the picture, and ready to cause trouble. My favorite aspect of this book was the way it really made the setting come to life. I felt like I was there in Ireland with the characters. The romance was also well done, though I found myself getting frustrated as certain characters get angry at each other for reasons that seem irrational to the reader and aren’t explained. Still, this is a great book for anyone who likes Irish mythology, urban fantasy, and romance.

2023.04.01 00:28 Kermunit9000 My Rough Elden Ring Timeline

Rough Elden ring Timeline
More than a million Years ago (Primordial Era) * The Greater Will sent a falling star to the lands between which became the Elden beast and Elden ring * With the creation of the Elden ring, the world itself came into being, thus creating a ton of Gods that embody certain aspects of this world (Akin to Kami in Shinto mythology)
Anywhere between 1 million till about 10,000 years ago) (Ancient Dragon Era) * An Ancient tree sprouted that was known as the crucible, from it spawned all sorts of life forms, but mainly the Dragons * The Dragons ruled the world for Centuries under their own God chosen by the Greater Will, and their own Elden Lord from their capital of Farum Azula * One Day the Dragon god either fled or died and their entire civilisation collapsed throwing the world into chaos without the order of the Elden ring
Between 10,000 Years ago and 200 years ago (Crucible Era) * During this time of chaos without the Elden ring many civilisations rose up from the crucible. Most notably were the Giants, Numen, Misbegotten, and Humans (possibly, humans could be a decent of the Numen) * The Giants fought a war with the dragons descendents and won, claiming their territory of the mountain tops as their own * Eventually a Numan woman was chosen by the Greater Will to become the new god, being named Eternal Queen Marika, becoming an Empyrean * At some point a clan of Numen people offended the Greater Will by slaying one of their messengers Known as the Two Fingers, and as punishment were banished underground where they would develop the enteral cities * During this time she sought the warrior Godfrey as her Husband and together they sought to rule in the name of the Higher will * They started construction of their capital city Leyndell at the foot of the Crucible Tree * They learned that the Giants had a flame that could burn the crucible tree and so staged an attack on them * Marika’s Forces one and she officially became a god leading to the Age Of Plenty
Around 200-150 Years ago, Age of Plenty Era * By this time Godfrey had become Elden Lord and had at least 4 children with Marika. They were Godwyn the first born, Morgott and Mohg the Omen Twins, and Melina. * Melina was chosen to be an empyrean and became the Gloam Eyed Queen, and with her Godskin Apostles which were artificial life forms made from alchemy, she declared war on Marika and succeeded in Burning the Crucible with her Ghost Flame capable of killing gods. * With the burning of the crucible it could no longer produce any bounty and the Capital of Leyndell was filled with Ash. * When Marika defeated the Gloam Eyed Queen she burned her as punishment and took all her memories leaving her a wondering soul, burned and bodiless * As a way to ensure something like this never happened again Marika sealed away Destined Death (the source of the ghost flame) into her Shadow Bound Beast Maliketh * With the sealing of death Marika had created a new order, a Golden Order. And with the founding of this order a golden Spectral Tree was created over the stump of the crucible tree. This new tree would be named The Erdtree, and thus begun the Golden Order
Around 150-100 years ago Erdtree and Golden Order Era (Godfrey Reign) * While the Giants and Godskins had been subdued, the rest of the lands between were still independent from the Golden Order, which lead to Godfrey and his soldiers marching southward and claiming each region through war. * They defeated the Stormlord of Limgrave and Godfry had his castle build on Storm Hill, which would become his HQ while he waged war. * He claimed the Weeping Peninsula via sieging Castle Morne, aswell as Caelid likely through a similar conquest at Redmane Castle * Although the southern regions were easily conquered Liurnia was not. Godfrey couldn’t capture there stronghold of Reya Lucaria on his first siege and had to regroup * Around this time Queen Marika’s other self would make their debut as the champion of Radagon * Via a ploy to subjugate Liurnia, Radagon and Rennala Queen of Liurnia, would marry and the Golden Order would adopt their beliefs into their own. * After all of The Lands Between had become conquered by The Golden Order, Godfrey had lost his purpose as he lived for battle, thus losing his grace and he and his men becoming Tarnished. * Queen Marika had the Tarnished leave the lands between to go conquer beyond the sea of fog, and promised to one day return their grace to their decents and call them back.
Erdtree and Golden Order era 100-30 years ago Radagon Reign) * After Godfrey was hounded from the lands between, Marika made her other self Radagon her new King, and taking with him his 3 kids, demigods all. * Through experimentation they eventually had children themselves, a set of twins known as Miquella and Malenia * In Radagon’s reign life was largely peaceful, as the Kingdom developed into a more advanced civilisation. * At some Point Miquella disagreed with the Golden Order and thus split off with his sister and planted a new tree that he watered with his own blood, which would eventually become the Haligtree * Tragedy struck when on the Night of Black Knives a group of Numen women assassinated a handful of Demigods, the first being Godwyn, marika’s firstborn. This shook the kingdom and those close to Godwyn especially * One of those close to Godwyn was Miquella, who tried to use a ritual involving an eclipse to bring Godwyn back in order for him to receive a true death. However this ritual failed due to Radagon’s Son Radahn stopping the movement of the starts. * Miquella for some reason his himself in a cocoon either before or after this ritual (maybe it was part of it?) and left Malenia to battle Radahn in Caelid, resulting in a stalemate and the destruction of Caelid due to Malenia’s Rot * During this time Mohg snuck into the undefended Haligtree and stole Miquella for his own ritual. * Queen Marika became distraught by Godwyn’s death, and the rise of those who live in death showed her the flaw in her golden order. So she shattered the Elden ring, bringing chaos to the land.
The Shattering - 30 years ago * all out war within the golden order resulted in more deaths of demigod and mortal alike threw the world into chaos once more
The Age of The Tarnished 30 years ago- present * as queen Marika promised Godfrey, his soldiers and their descendants were called back to the lands between and guided by the two fingers into one of them repairing the Elden Ring and becoming Elden Lord

2023.04.01 00:27 mikhaileesi I can’t astral project or OBE because I always get terrified when I see myself separate and nopes TF outta there. Help!

Long post! A lot of ramblings. I apologize in advance.
I have tried the guided meditations but every time I feel the OBE start, I get super scared and try so hard to put myself back together. I have experienced Astral projection before, but it just sorta happened without me trying. What I experienced was very positive and I would like to experience it again but I get scared when I try it voluntarily.
Growing up, I have juggled with the possibility that I may be spiritual. As a kid, I remember hearing disembodied voices that nobody else seems to hear and also play with some positive, playful, I like to call them ‘fairies’ who would show me magical projections at night idk how to explain it.
When I was around 13-14 we moved into the house where my mother grew up in. (the old house is in a compound of 4 houses in 1 land. 1 main house, 2 small apartments and 1 house at the back who used to be my uncle’s house. No we aren't rich, compounds are common in the Philippines) We lived there for almost 6 years and during that duration, I was visited by spirits on a regular basis. On occasion, I got forced to have an OBE for something I can not explain. During those years I got depressed and developed an eating disorder and got nightmares and night terrors on an almost nightly basis. I wasn't the only person seeing and experiencing ghosts there, my family members and even the lady who rents in one of the apartments have experiences too. But those are stories for another thread which I'll be happy to share our collective experiences if you guys want.
Anyway
We moved outta there when I was 19, the nightmares immediately stopped and my ghost sightings disappeared. (I'm 30 now and have had seen some ghosts still but not as intense as it was in that house) We just chalked that out to be that my mother’s old house was haunted.
Ok so fast forward to me being 20, living in our new home. I found out from my twice-removed aunt--who worked as our housekeeper at that time and whose family also became the caretaker of my mom’s old house up to this day-- that my late maternal grandfather was a ‘Spiritista’ or a medium. She told me stories about him and his high spirituality? If that’s how it's called.
It made sense to me that maybe I inherited some of it--but also very scared of dabbling into it because my Paternal grandfather is a church Pastor and I grew up with him. To be clear, he is not a closed-minded Bible thumper. He is a very positive and kind person. I was active in church from childhood to my early teens so the idea of being spiritual but not being Godly spiritual way, scares me and guilts me.
I need advice on how to overcome and embrace my spirituality and not be terrified of it.

Note: Any troop mustering, patrol setting, siege starting, or actions of that sort must either ping the mods with automod in the comments of the post, or you can modmail us with a link or the details. If the mods aren't notified of the action, we can't keep track of everything and run the mechanical aspects of this game in a timely manner.
Standard mechanical rules such as sieges, CV, etc, cannot be altered by plot odds or lore flavor.

Mustering

Garrison

A holdfast during times of peace are assumed to have 10% of their men raised. This is the garrison, which does not cost money or lead to loss of future income, and is always inside the respective holdfast unless specified otherwise

Mustering Time

You do not raise all your troops immediately.
40% of a holfast's men are "regulars," and can be mustered immediately (either sending a modmail with the orders, or posting it and using automod to ping the mods in the comments), in addition to the constantly raised garrison. The remaining 50% are "reserves" and take a full 24 hours (1 month in game) to be mustered, regardless of whether the regulars are already mustered or not.

Rally points

Multiple allied armies may converge on one spot, or a rally point, marked by an authority figure after a messenger or a raven sends word. Every group of soldiers, by default, must be commanded by a named character of some sort.

Regeneration

Troops regenerate at a rate of 10% per year.

Costs

Troop Upkeep

When levies are raised, they're not working the land. In addition, it they need to be outfitted with basic armor and weaponry, as well as fed. For every 1% of levies raised, the house raising them loses 1% of the next year's income (pre-taxes). Every levy raised costs .01 gold a month in flat upkeep

Desertion

When a month passes and someone isn't paying their troops, some of them will desert. The exact amount that do depends on a roll. The roll will continue to occur each month until the player either pays their troops or has none left. Troops that desert either return to their holdfast, or form bandit groups. Both outcomes count the troops as having "died" for the purpose of them regenerating later for the holdfast. More troops are lost with each month they don't get paid.
1d100 Result
1-25 60% of troops desert
26-50 45% of troops desert
51-75 25% of troops desert
76-100 10% of troops desert.

Troops and Battles

CV and Composition

Every troop has a CV (Combat Value), that is used to judge their strength in battle.
Troops are split up by five different types: light infantry, heavy infantry, ranged infantry, light cavalry, and heavy cavalry. Each type has a different CV, and infantry and cavalry have different movement speeds. Each region of Westeros has different amounts of each type of troop, and different CV values for those troop types. Some regions are missing certain troop types, or have other, unique ones.
Assaults on holdfasts are rolled using ACV for both attackers and defenders
All the troop compositions and CVs can be found here.

Battle Calculation

(CV Team/Total CV of both Teams)*100 = a percent
Consult the chart below after you find how many dice you roll for the given percent
Each side rolls, and then loses a percent of men equal to what the other side rolled (think of the result rolled as the strength of the attack being inflicted on the other side).
% of CV Roll % of CV Roll
7.5-12.5% 1d10 47.5-52.5% 5d10
12.5-17.5% 1d10, 1d5 52.5-57.5% 5d10, 1d5
17.5-22.5% 2d10 57.5-62.5% 6d10
22.5-27.5% 2d10, 1d5 62.5-67.5% 6d10, 1d5
27.5-32.5% 3d10 67.5-72.5% 7d10
32.5-37.5% 3d10, 1d5 72.5-77.5% 7d10, 1d5
37.5-42.5% 4d10 77.5-82.5% 8d10
42.5-47.5% 4d10, 1d5 82.5-87.5% 8d10, 1d5
47.5-52.5% 5d10 87.5-92.5% 9d10

Note:

While patrols with less than 7.5% of CV will autosurrender, an army that is lead by PCs is not subject to these rules, and it is up to the commander of the troops to decide what to do.
For small scale conflicts, Freeform rolls may be utilized by the mods in preference over full mechanics.

Retreat

If the loser of either a ground or naval battle refuses to surrender, they must retreat. Smaller forces have a better chance of retreating, as do forces of cavalry. The formula for retreat is below.
(Engage Speed - Retreater Speed) x 5% = Engage Chance
The engage chance refers to the probability that the pursuing force can catch the retreating force and engage them again. Once it is calculated, a d100 will be rolled to find out what happens.
Walls, impassable mountains, and shores make retreating harder, but the level of difficulty is up to a mod. It will always be at least twice as hard to retreat, but it can be higher in certain situations.

Death/Injury Rolls

Any named characters that participate in a battle must be subjected to a death roll. The odds of them dying are based of the percent of casualties their army took during the battle. The below percentages are of the previous roll given during the battle, not out of a full d100.
Bottom 80%: Death
Next 10%: Maimed
Next 10%: Severely Injured

Movement and Terrain

Spreadsheet to calculate movement times can be found here.
When moving from one point to another, please specify where you want to go, which troops you're moving, and the PCs (player characters) that are moving with the army, especially the commander(s).
In any route, the starting tile does not count for the purposes of total movement cost.

Movement Orders

Players are required to have the following information when submitting an order to move troops or ships:
If any part of the required criteria is not fulfilled, then movement order will not be processed and the player will be subsequently informed of such action in addition to what part is missing from their order.

Terrain

Terrain Type Movement Cost
Fields (Light Green) 1
Hills (Light Brown) 2
Forests (Green) 2
Tundra (White) 2
Mountains (Brown) 3
Swamps (Dark Green) 3
Desert (Yellow) 3
Mountains (Dark Brown) -

Movement Points

A mixed host moves as fast as the slowest unit it contains, so most hosts (since they would include infantry) would get 12 points a day, unless the cavalry was riding ahead.
When an army reaches the size of 5,000 men, it will have its speed reduced by 1, and the speed will be further reduced by 1 for every further 1,000 men in the army, to a minimum of 6.

Other Terrain Effects

Hills grant a stationary force an extra 25% CV, and the Non impassible mountain tiles grant an extra 50% CV,
Dornish troops treat desert like grassland, Northern troops and beyond the wall treat ice/snow/tundra like grassland, Crannogmen treat swamps like forests.
A host may opt to hold a bridge/ford in their hex that is not part of a hold. They would gain a defensive bonus from a palisade. (25%)

Scouting and Engagement

Overview

A roll is not required for two armies to meet on roads*, holdfasts, ports, rally points, and passes because they are smaller areas that are assumed to be common knowledge (a pass is any tile of less heavy terrain between two mountains or hills, or between mountains and a river, or between mountains and the coastline). The two armies know everything about each other automatically.
*Meet on roads meaning when one group of soldiers is stationary on a road and another group of PCs or soldiers are moving on the same road in the same area, along the road. If another group of PCs/soldiers are crossing a road in the same tile that a group less than 250 soldiers is patrolling the road, there is no detection.
Whenever two hosts are on the same tile (or adjacent tiles) but not in a specific area like the examples mentioned above, they must roll to determine what their scouts know. The only exception to this rule is an army of under 250 men on one tile, which cannot roll to detect another force, but can still be detected itself.
The rolls determine if one army can engage another force that's either on the same tile, or on an adjacent one. They also determine how much scouts and patrols know about their foe, from the relative size of the army, the region of the army, to the banner that army is flying.
To set up scouts, specify a tile on the map that you want them to patrol on. To detect anything, there need to be at least 250 men in the scouting party, and the tile must be patrolled for at least 1 hour (about a day and a half in game. However, when detecting an army of 1k+ men, a force will instantly roll detection. Making the party larger than 250 can increase the chances that they detect the enemy (see the modifiers underneath the table below). Stationary ships/troops that meet the minimum requirements are assumed to be patrolling, and will mechanically act as such.
If a force remains patrolling on a tile for more than the minimum time, it gets another patrol roll for every further 24 hours (1 month in game) that it stays patrolling on that tile.
If a force detects and is able to engage another force, but does not respond within 48 hours on reddit, the right of that force to act first is waived and the other force can either continue on its route or roll its own detection, depending on the circumstance.
Small parties aren't detected by default, but if someone is attempting to track them or hunt them down in a plot, specific odds will still be used for that detection.
Patrols cannot be set, and forts or ports cannot be built, within 2 hexes of living Essosi cities.
A player cannot have more than 20 troops under their control within 2 hexes of living Essosi cities.

Detection Calculation

Some conditions affect the outcome of a detection roll.
Detection Roll Condition Modifier
Scouts are in adjacent tile Odds taken from column to the left
Scouts are within two hexes of a player's holdfast Odds taken from next column
The player controlling the scouts was alerted in some way +2
Additional men in patrol +2 per 250 men, caps at +4

Engagement Calculation

Based on the results of the detection roll, the engagement roll has different odds for whether a force can be engaged or not. There are four levels of detection, from only detecting men without any numbers or sigils, to getting all relevant information, each of which is present in the table below.
Engage? Detection Level 1 Detection Level 2 Detection Level 3 Detection Level 4

9 Yes Yes Yes Yes
10 Yes Yes Yes Yes
Engagement Condition Modifier

If a unique scenario occurs, it is up to mod discretion to add other modifiers to the detection and engagement occurs.

Sieges

Sieging a keep requires men equal to 150% of that keep's normal garrison (i.e. 15% of that keep's total levies).
A coastal holdfast with a port cannot be properly besieged unless it is also blockaded by ships. Otherwise, the men inside never start starving, and people can enter and leave the holdfast by sea (if the holdfast has mechanical ships in port).
Even if a siege is not explicitly ordered, when an outside force occupies a holdfast tile with enough men to siege, the men inside that holdfast are still unable to muster men without the outside force allowing them to, and must pass a roll to successfully send out ravens.
When sending out ravens under siege, only one raven per outside location can attempt to be sent. A total number of ravens able to attempt to be sent will be rolled by the mod team, based on the holdfast being sieged. Odds for ravens being shot down under siege cannot be altered by either side using special situations (training archers harder, sending out falcons with the ravens, etc).
Forces assaulting or sieging a keep do not automatically know the amount or composition of men inside.

Length of a Siege

The amounts of time a siege lasts before the troops inside begin to starve are listed below. It depends on the number of troops inside, and the normal size of that castle's garrison. For places that don't usually have troops, such as forts, the garrison number counts as 10% of the max capacity.
Men Inside Garrison 100-200 Garrison 250-400 Garrison 450+
25,000+ 0 1 2
10,001-25,000 1 2 3
5,001-10,000 2 3 4
2,501-5,000 3 4 5
1,001-2,500 4 5 6
501-1,000 5 6 7
101-500 6 7 8
0-100 7 8 9
Note: Cities always last 1 less month under siege than they would otherwise.

Starvation

After the allotted number of months have passed, the holdfast begins losing men to starvation by the following amounts. The two columns are added together each time. Percent of the troops is deducted first, then the number of men.
Month % lost # lost
1 15% 100
2 25% 150
3 35% 200
4 45% 250
5 55% 300
6 65% 350
7 75% 400
8 85% 450
9 95% 500
If a holdfast under siege doesn't wish to lose men, the only other option is to go forth and fight the besiegers, or to somehow escape by other means.

Raiding

A minimum of one hundred men are required to commit any raid.

Raiding a Holdfast Tile

Garrison: The garrison is not touched for the holdfast in a raid, unless a user specifically says to do so - but the user will know about smallfolk fighting back too.
Raiding Army in Holdfast Tile: The holdfast knows there is an army in their holdfast tile automatically. Regular smallfolk roll for if they know how large of an army, as well as sigils.
Defending Smallfolk: Any raid can be met by 8-13% of the holdfast's total force as smallfolk. This does not include anything from the garrison or keep. For CV, it is 60% Light Infantry; 40% Ranged Infantry
Movement Orders: Must be all submitted and calculated (including potential reward movement point spending) prior to a raid. Without clear and distinct orders concerning movement, a raid will not be rolled

Raid Rewards from Holdfast Tile

Max movement points to spend in a raid is 5 total.
Pillage: Pillaging is the equivalent of searching the lands outside a keep for gold and valuables. The raiders may choose to roll 1d10 for every 1 movement point being spent to pillage the lands. The result of all the dice being rolled is a percentage, times the base income of the hold (see the "next" column of the tax tab of the econ sheet), is how much gold the raiders successfully take. This gold is deducted from the following years income.
Raze: Razing lands costs 3 movement points to do.
Sack: This action can only be taken if you control the keep. All gold stored at the keep at the time is stolen without a roll, and Businesses within the holdfast are effected (by their yearly income) when a keep is sacked.

Raiding a Tile Adjacent to a Holdfast

Garrison: The garrison cannot be apart of these attempts
Raiding Army in Tile: Smallfolk can decide to warn their liege lord - Smallfolk Roll with "Notice an Army" as the lowest; or Smallfolk can attack (later warn liege lord should they win/any survive).
Defending Smallfolk: If opted to fight, smallfolk can have 4-7% of the holdfast's total force as a smallfolk milita. For CV, it is 80% Light Infantry, 20% Ranged Infantry

Raid Rewards from Tile Adjacent to Holdfast

Razing:

Forts

Forts provide defense bonuses to troops stationed inside. This is nowhere near as much as a castle would, but still a lot more than having the troops just camp out in the open.
You cannot just build a level 2 or 3 fort. You have to start with a level 1 fort and then upgrade it to get to a higher level. Forts cannot be higher than a level 3.
A fort cannot be built on a tile that already has any major structure either on it or adjacent to it.

Prices

Fort Level Price Build Time Cooldown Troop Capacity Minimum Troops
1 800 6 months 6 months 1,000 500
2 2,000 9 months 9 months 2,500 750
3 5,000 12 months 12 months 5,000 1,000

Maintenance

A fort has to be maintained in order to avoid falling into disrepair. At the end of each year, a fort needs to have a minimum number of troops (listed in the table above). If it doesn't have at least that many, it begins degrading. After 1 year of degradation, a fort costs half it's price (to get to the current level), and after 2 years, it goes down a level and costs the full price and time to upgrade again. If a level 1 fort degrades for two years, it no longer provides any defensive bonus whatsoever. A tier 1 fort that is partially degraded will have .5 DV, and so forth.

Detection

Forts do not receive the same detection rolls as patrols, i.e. adjacent rolls. However, forts built on roads or in passes do receive detection rolls.

Smallfolk Rolls

Smallfolk rolls are rolled in tiles containing holdfasts, or tiles adjacent to holdfasts. There is only one roll per holdfast, and not for every tile near a holdfast that a force passes through. Tiles that come within range of two or more holdfasts have their single roll determined by which holdfast is closest. If equidistant, a single roll is done and all equidistant holdfasts are informed of the result.
No mechanical actions can be taken as a result of the information gained from a smallfolk roll, which includes troops being raised, gold or characters being moved, and men being sent out from the keep. However, letters can still be sent within 48 hours of the roll results.
For intra-realm conflicts, smallfolk rolls will not typically be performed for forces under 2,501 men, allowing the possibility of surprise attacks and recognizing that civil wars may start without word immediately spreading. Once a conflict has become widely known or in cases where houses are known to be hostile toward one another, smallfolk rolls will be performed for intra-realm engagements.
