In law, there are different levels of intent that are required for all crimes. We call this mens rea. The idea is, the intent of a person who kills in self defense is different than the intent needed for a murderer. It seems fairly obvious that this is the case. But this idea can be applied to a wide range of scenarios. Here, I'll try to explain why I'm opposed to Linus' advertising plan for the LTT backpack, but first, I'll explain the legal analogy.
Generally speaking, under the Model Penal Code (the "MPC," a Model Act adopted by many, but not all, states in the United States), there are 4 levels of mens rea, and in order from "most" intent to "least" intent, they are:

1. Purposely

A defendant acts purposely, or with purpose, if it is their conscious objective to commit the criminal offense.

1. Knowingly

A defendant acts knowingly, or with knowledge, if the defendant is practically certain that their conduct will cause the criminal offense. Knowledge of a "high probability" is sufficient for a defendant to be convicted of an offense that requires a mens rea of knowledge.

1. Recklessly

A defendant acts recklessly if the defendant knows of a substantial and unjustified risk, consciously disregarded that risk, and the conscious disregard was a gross deviation from the standard of conduct a reasonable person in that situation.

1. Negligently

A defendant acts negligently, or with negligence, if the defendant was unaware of a substantial and unjustified risk, but should have been aware of that risk, and the failure to have knowledge of the risk itself was a gross deviation from the standard of conduct a reasonable person in that situation.
The standard example of mens rea used in law schools is criminal homicide. There are a few different ways to "grade" homicide (the MPC approach, the "degrees of murder" approach, and the common law approach), but we'll focus on the MPC approach.
Under the MPC, homicide is graded as follows:
Murder is purposely killing, knowingly killing, or recklessly and with extreme indifference killing (this doesn't quite map to recklessly as we saw above, so don't think its the same).
Manslaughter is recklessly killing, or under a condition of extreme mental or emotional distress killing.
Negligent homicide is killing negligently.
Why do we distinguish at all? Someone dies at the end, and the defendant did it. Let's say we have a defendant that killed purposely, and we have a defendant that killed negligently. Why do we punish the two defendants differently? Because what we are actually punishing is not the act of killing (in law, this is called the actus reus), we are punishing killing with intent (in law, again, we call this mens rea). Thus, we judge that lying in wait and killing someone via torture is more deserving of punishment than accidentally killing someone via speeding, and that is more deserving of punishment than killing someone via failing to render aid (this is sort of disputed as to whether someone should be punished for this at all).
What does this have to do with Linus' argument today in the WAN show? Consider as follows:
You wish to accomplish some legitimate, above-board business objective–let's say, you want to build a second office building for your growing business. You consider two different contracts. The first contractor follows the letter of the law completely. Her business follows the proper protocols for hiring immigrant labor. She allows inspectors from the department of labor to inspect her worksite. She has translated worker's rights fliers, and has posted them at all jobsites she operates at. She is licensed by the state in various ways–health and safety, handyman license, and drilling and construction licenses. She offers acceptable wages. She give this information to clients upon request, and is well known for treating her workers well. But she is also known for asking for repeated extensions, and she often refuses jobs that are too hard, too large, or that don't pay well.
The second contractor is a new operator in town. He is much larger, and has an established reputation for aggressive construction deadlines. But you have questions about his practices. Namely, you've walked passed a few worksites of theirs, and you see workers positioned below large cranes, workers without helmets, and workers who seem to have worked throughout the night. You know that many of these practices are unlawful. But you've never personally confirmed your suspicions. To allay some of your concerns, you talk with a friend, who has contracted with the second contractor before. Your friend tells you that, to his knowledge, they got the construction done on time and all inspections were completed promptly. Your friend also didn't ask as to whether the second contractor was following labor law.
Two laws binding in this jurisdiction read as follows:
"Whoever purposely or knowingly violates labor law, or contracts with a party which violates labor law, shall be guilty of a felony, and shall be punished under this provision with a term of imprisonment not exceeding 7 years, a fine not to exceed $100,000, or both."
"Whoever recklessly or negligently violates labor law, or contracts with a party which violates labor law, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall be punished under this provision with a fine not to exceed $25,000."
Simply:

• You do not have actual knowledge that the second contractor violates labor law.
  
• You are untrained in labor law, and cannot be certain that the practices you've seen yourself would violate labor law.
  
• You are unsure if the first contractor would be able to complete the job; your office must be fairly large, and you want to move in soon.
  
• You concede that you don't have to construct the new office, as the old office is fine for now.
  

Given this fact-pattern, make a choice as to what you would do. If you took that choice, would you be guilty of a felony, or a misdemeanor, or anything at all?
Linus' quandry is similar to this. He has made known the following:

• He has actual knowledge that some unethical behavior occurs
  
• He does not have actual knowledge that unethical behavior occurs every time
  
• He does not plan on gaining, or attempting to gain, actual knowledge as to whether unethical behavior occurs in any particular transaction
  
• If unethical behavior occurs, he will surely cease to work with that other party
  

Under these facts, it would be difficult to argue that Linus is purposely trying to commit unethical behavior, or to support such behavior. But, it is clear that Linus is at least acting recklessly as to whether unethical behavior occurs (I'd argue that this arises to knowingly, but I'll leave that aside for now). He knows that there is a risk of unethical behavior occurring (that there may be some compensation or exchange of things of value in direct quid pro quo for his product being featured as a review or being featured on a product listicle), he is advocating for proceeding with this plan despite the known risk, and (in my opinion, and apparently Luke's as well) the conscious disregard of this risk is not reasonable given the circumstances (for personal pecuniary gain).
I leave to you, dear reader, whether or not one should support a creatoinfluencer who acts recklessly with regard to unethical business practices.

Introduction
The world is struggling at the moment. Fed rate hikes, looming recession fears (or recession/depression/total economic collapse depending on your country) and inflation still running rampant in most countries. People are in fear of AI, and the unbelievable potential AI has to put many people out of a job, in the next 10-20 years. So while this is all going on my thought was, “what could come out of all of this chaos, and fear, to make The People of any country actually want to adopt a CBDC?”
Well, a thought experiment I had was, that the Government will have a lot of trouble on their hands with their Crypto competition. Bitcoin is wonderful, as it is the hardest money on Earth. However, Bitcoin isn’t necessarily the model or competition that the Government really sees as a real problem for CBDC trust and acceptance in my opinion.
The real problem for a CBDC is, Proof of Stake crypto currency. Below I will explain Proof of Stake, for anyone curious as to how it works as a rough concept (many different versions exists with their own trade-offs), so if you know how it works, feel free to skip too the next section.
Basic premise of Proof of Stake
Proof of Stake, is where holders of cryptocurrency, can choose to lock up their tokens with validators. Those holders still retain rights of ownership to this tokens, however, their tends to be a lockup period or a certain number of days for the tokens to “unbond” from a validators pool of tokens. These Validators, are the block producers and provide the gate keeping to the network via by on-chain governance in the case of Cosmos and Algorand, or by social consensus, in the case of Ethereum.
With these various systems in place, it is important to clarify that the system of incentivizing good behavior on the behalf of Validators is that if they remain honest, then part of the inflation of the specific chain is paid to the Validator. In the case of a validator doing something malicious or against social consensus, delegators can redelegate their stake away from a certain validator. Another penalty is in the case of double signing or failing to upgrade their software, a slashing and jailing penalty can be an effective way to remove some or all of the power away from the malicious validator and into validators who are proving to be trustworthy.
Understanding how this model competes with a CBDC
Now that we know why proof of stake exists, and a rough concept on how it operates. I see that with Proof of Stake, the delegators, or rather The People of the world can have censorship resistant access to a decentralized Universal Basic Income, by delegating their tokens and earning income by means of staking to these validators. That system is by far, a naturally better system as opposed to a centrally controlled and and easily censorable form of digital money.
That leaves only one option the Government really has, to compete with a more liberating form of a quasi-universal basic income. That is bribe the People who don’t realize or care about the liberation that crypto can provide, through universal basic income via easy, automatic distributions on their CBDC.
Conclusion
As AI becomes more prevalent and advanced, more jobs could be lost and people may be forced into needing some sort of UBI in my opinion. My preference is to utilize my ability to work and make money now, to enter into the quasi-UBI system that is Proof of Stake crypto currency. However, many people will be late, and the poorest of those people will be bribed into survival through the offering of a universal basic income and the convenience that a CBDC can offer.
Stay vigilant for more Universal Basic Income talk. It may come around the time of a full CBDC release in a country near you. Government bribery taken to a whole new level.
Tldr; As Government distrust persists, and the AI narrative continues to grow. It is becoming apparent that AI could begin to cause large amounts of Job loss, and force Governments to provide a Universal Basic Income to citizens, as a new major source of income for the average Joe who can’t find a job or meaningful income.
Proof of Stake as it stand, will somewhat act as a quasi-form of Universal Basic Income in the future, for those savvy enough to understand how to delegate on-chain and for those with enough money to utilize this as a viable income source. However, many people may choose to be left out of this alternative financial system, and opt-into a CBDC system. This would be, presumably if Universal Basic Income becomes the primary driver to such a system and a CBDC proves to be the more convenient option for the average citizen.

When I read the title, my mind immediately goes to privacy concerns. While I think the convenience of having a personal assistant that knew the ins and outs of every single detail of my life would be.... Well if I'm being honest the first word that comes to mind is intrusive.
I can recognize how useful a tool like that would be. I don't think I need to convince this crowd how powerful these tools are. And I want to take full advantage. I want it to be trained on my data. I want it to know every single last detail about me. I want it to know me more than I know myself. I want it to be able to produce the best answers to my specific situation, for me as an individual. there is so much data tied to us these days, it's all there for it to analyze. it can indeed be used for good.
but my first thought will always be 'damn, microsoft(or google, or apple, or whoever else) knows everything about me'
and while I understand that they already have the data to tie everything together, I can at least take some comfort in knowing that someone will really have to dig and do analysis and really think about the numbers and how they relate to each other. and all that just to get a glimpse.... And I know because I work with this kind of data day to day in my day job at a megacorp. even the best analysts don't get much more than that, a glimpse... (in my limited experience of course)
but if an advertiser could just ask the computer, well, anything...about me. me specifically. and it was trained by me with my own personal data. the barrier of entry is gone... there's nothing stopping microsoft or whoever else from selling a model trained on me.
i think inevitably these tools will be built into the operating system or the web browser. the cat will be out of the bag. we (including myself) have proven to time and again to give up our privacy for convenience. this will be no different.

The shrill howl of another proximity alarm fills the room for barely a moment, before being silenced by some unseen operator. In the rush to redeploy, asteroid warning systems had been left on. They’d barely had time to unload their cargo and refuel before the order was given to investigate some strange signal on the outskirts of venlil defense, so compromises were made to get the ship back into the field. For a moment, Kaivla considers the awful jobs of the engineers, but shakes this momentary weakness off.
The signal which had their lieutenant hunters in such a frenzy was the unmistakable pulse of an FTL drive, far outside any marked colonized areas. Some of the crew tossed about the idea that it might be a testing ground for some new type of drive, given the strength of the signal and the location, but the time for theorizing is past; the origin point is practically within sight, and nobody is keen on missing out on the hunt. Kaivla’s heard of what a delicacy venlil are, but an unfortunate chemical burn kept her out of the last raid, and her meager salary as an enlisted cattle-handler didn’t allow such lavish spending. She checks over her sidearm one last time, before the lights dim, diverting power to weapons in preparation for the main event.
The lights turn back on.
She can feel a strong weight in her chest; even with inertial dampening, the deceleration is jarring. Why are they slowing down? Why are the lights back on?
The hall is empty, and her quarters are barely seconds away from the bridge. It is startlingly empty; only their captain and a handful of crewmembers unlucky enough to be on the ship at the time the order was given. Having so few people for a raiding party is bad practice, but the identity of their target meant that a fight was a foregone conclusion. For a-

Another brief automated alarm snaps her out of it, and she walks up to the nearest window to get a look at this unmarked vessel herself. Before she can even react, a voice behind her barks out an order to hail the thing. Kaivla moves back to a spot where she can see the screen.
A pair of brown forward-facing eyes meets her, slightly recessed into a rounded skull.
There are several long seconds where the ground seems to drop out from under her. She gets back to her feet, faintly surprised at the lack of humiliation facing her for literally collapsing at a still image. The reason becomes quickly apparent as she looks around the room; about half the crew is scrambling back to their senses and hoping nobody noticed in the interim. The image is still there, the figure unblinking. It’s a strangely beautiful sight, a splash of colors contrasted with the rough metal of the ship.

Kaivla was generously offered the position of cattle-handler without any means of refusing, and while she has adjusted over the last few months, it’s clearly the wrong job for her. She feels a vague pit of worry in her stomach every now and then, but that could just be hunger from the rather inadequate provided meals.
Her job, providing food for the Dominion, is genuinely honorable in some small measure. Every action she takes is done with some degree of care and pride, even tasks mundane as transporting empty cages are performed with earnest diligence. It earns her nothing.
Outside of work, life drags on interminably. In the quiet hours of the night, she wishes she had more people to talk to; in the silent hours of the morning when her mind cannot self-regulate, she wonders why she even lives at all. Days blur into weeks, the low drone of tedium hanging over every routine. Every day feels the same.
Now, she knows with certainty as she stares, nothing can ever be the same again. A second truly sapient species has made it to the stars.
