The Polish Invasion of Kaliningrad

A New Threat Looms over Europe
A diary entry from a killed Russian Soldier, recovered by Polish soldiers
Yesterday, I was awoken with by the ominous rumble of incoming missiles. Without time to even react, I sprung into action, racing towards the window to survey the unfolding chaos. The sight that met my eyes was one of unbridled destruction and carnage.
Western fighter jets, icons of modern military technology and tactical proficiency, were raining down destruction on our key military installations, including our radio center. The missiles they launched traced an eerie path across the sky, homing in on their intended targets with deadly precision.
Frantic, I made my way back to my station and attempted to send out a distress signal, but it was too late. The world was engulfed in a blinding flash of light, followed by an ear-splitting explosion that rocked the very foundation of our center. The walls shook violently, and I was hurled to the ground.
The acrid scent of smoke and the blistering heat of the fireball filled my nostrils, and my lungs felt as if they were about to burst from the force of the explosion. As I looked around, I realized the extent of the damage: the equipment around me was damaged, sparking, and smoking, and our communication channels had been severed.
Summoning all the strength and willpower within me, I staggered out of the center and peered up at the sky. The Polish planes were still hovering above, dropping bombs and missiles with reckless abandon on anything that moved, and even on things that didn't. The scales of the conflict were tipped against us; their air defenses were superior to ours in every way.
I was overcome with fear, as I realized the futility of our defense efforts. Our nation was under siege, and the enemy's superior firepower was an almost insurmountable obstacle to overcome.
As the night dragged on, I worked tirelessly to assess the damage and maintain our communication lines. However, the devastation was overwhelming; the radio center was reduced to rubble, and the number of casualties among our soldiers was staggering. I couldn't help but think about my family and friends back home, wondering if they were safe or if they had fallen prey to the same brutal violence that we were experiencing.
Despite the overwhelming odds, I was resolute in my determination to play my part in the defense of our nation. The gravity of our situation was not lost on me; every bit of effort and energy I expended in repairing the damaged equipment was vital to our ability to hold out against our enemies.
I, Sergei Volkov, penned these words with a trembling hand, unsure if I would live to see the next day. As a Kaliningrad air-defense soldier, I have been thrust into the midst of a conflict that threatens not only my life but the very existence of our nation. With each passing moment, the sounds of gunfire and explosions grow louder, and the fear that grips my heart becomes more pronounced. I know that I may never see my family again, that this journal may be the only testament to my existence.
As I write these words, the weight of my responsibility as a soldier bears heavily upon me. My thoughts turn to my fellow soldiers, the brave men and women who stand beside me in this battle. Their unwavering dedication to our cause is both humbling and inspiring, and I am proud to serve alongside them.
To my family, my brothers and sisters, I implore you to remember me in your hearts, to hold onto the memories we shared, and to know that I loved you more than anything in this world. If I do not survive this conflict, I ask that this journal be sent to you, as a reminder of the sacrifices that I, and so many others, have made in the defense of our nation.
The Polish military's operations in the Kaliningrad separatist/autonomous state were largely successful, thanks to their well-coordinated and aggressive approach. The air strikes on key military installations were particularly effective, crippling Kaliningrad's air defenses and limiting their ability to mount effective counterattacks. The targeted attacks on missile sites and command centers also played a critical role in neutralizing Kaliningrad's ability to launch missiles at key targets in Poland.
On the ground, the Polish military achieved a number of important victories. They were able to secure control of the main roads leading to the capital city, cutting off Kaliningrad's supply lines and isolating their military forces. The Polish military also successfully seized key bridges and road junctions, allowing them to move freely throughout the region.
In urban areas, the Polish military faced significant challenges as Kaliningrad's military and civilian population turned many buildings into fortified positions. However, the Polish military's use of snipers, heavy weapons, and special forces allowed them to gradually gain control of key urban areas. They used bulldozers and other heavy equipment to clear away obstacles and create new avenues of attack, furthering their advance.
The success of Poland's military operations was also due in part to the poorly trained and maintained Kaliningrad armed forces. The lack of training and outdated equipment hampered their ability to mount effective counterattacks and defend key positions. This gave the Polish military an advantage in many areas, allowing them to achieve their objectives with relatively little resistance.
Around a year after the initial offensive, although with more difficulty than expected, Kaliningrad was fully under allied control.
The international community has been quick to condemn Poland's actions, with several nations calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. However, Poland has remained defiant, insisting that it is acting in its national interest and that the occupation will continue until its objectives are met. In addition, with majority of the west being politically complacent, and even participating in Poland's invasion, Warsaw has largely avoided large-scale sanctions or international condemnation.
However, the Polish government's over-expansionist policies have sparked a fierce debate within the country itself, with many citizens and political leaders voicing their concerns about the long-term consequences of military interventionism. Critics argue that Poland risks alienating itself from its allies and damaging its international reputation, while supporters contend that the country must take a proactive role in shaping global events and protecting its interests. In addition, taxpayers are increasingly concerned about having to pay taxes in order to support the military occupation of regions which they do not seem valuable to Poland. This has caused protests throughout the country calling for an abolishment of the "warhawkish and aggressive" foreign policy of Warsaw as of late.
In addition, at the initial stages of the attack, there were fears that Kaliningrad would be able to launch their nukes in retaliation. However, after a thorough investigation by the allied intelligence command, the nuclear capabilities of Kaliningrad were determined to be insignificant. Yet, just to be sure, the allied campaign included a bombing campaign where it flexed its recon capabilities, comprehensively destroying the vast majority of Kaliningrad's ballistic missiles.
However, the vast majorities of nuclear warheads were actually not recovered following the invasion. It seems that the knowledge of the secret bunker in which the warheads were stored was lost during the invasion. This has sparked international controversy and debate regarding the potential for nuclear terrorism in Europe. Although the Polish government still firmly states it believes that the nuclear warheads are defunct and unusable, the threat still looms.

Losses:

Allied Forces:
  • 113 killed, 12 missing, ~430 injured
Kaliningrad:
  • ~800 killed, ~3,000 injured, ~8,000 surrendered/defected
  • ~100 civilians dead, ~7,000 injured

2023.03.29 07:00 bbirdy99 Doctors don’t know what’s wrong and I need help.

Female, 24, ~220lbs. Medical history: PCOS, kidney stones, depression/anxiety.
I’m just looking for anyone to hear me and not disregard me. I’m suffering and I’m young and I’m so exhausted.
Since December 2021, I have been dealing with an undiagnosed and debilitating medical problem. The symptoms may have been occurring prior to this, but December is when I noticed and when everything began to spiral.
The first major incident was when I was helping set up for a work event. We had walked well over 2 miles - I was tired, but fine. Suddenly, it felt like my lower back tightened (think someone stretching a rubber band as far as it will go without snapping), I began to struggle to walk, my vision tunneled, and I thought I was going to pass out. Luckily, I didn’t and after sitting and resting I felt better.
I proceeded from this like I would any back problem: rest, OTC pain meds, stretching. Nothing helped. Everything got worse, much worse. For months, my pain grew from discomfort to debilitating. It migrated from my back to my hips and legs. I began to have problems with rapid heart rate and shortness of breath. At the time, I attributed it to the pain but looking back, it must have been part of the systematic inflammation I was going through. I also was losing strength everywhere. I could not step onto a curb without pulling myself up. I could not walk more than 10 steps without stopping. I couldn’t even change positions on the couch without hurting. I was starting to have difficulty chewing as well. Everything hurt.
I did get an MRI on my back done which revealed a lower disc bulge, but no one could explain how it could be causing my pain.
I tried everything to fix it: exercise, steroid injections, physical therapy, pain management, visits with a spinal specialist, special chiropractic care (no adjustments), swimming and many others I can’t remember. Everyone thought because none of this worked, that it was somehow my fault. I swear most days I could barely function to get out of bed, it was a miracle I was able to try at all.
My blood work was showing consistently elevated WBC. I had a couple doctors mention that it seemed like I had an infection, but clearly didn’t have one. I also developed a lymph node behind my right ear which an ultrasound cleared of being harmful, but it’s still kind of weird.
Fast forward to October 2022. I visit a hormone specialist for PCOS related things. He does some blood tests and tells me my inflammation levels are really high. He wants me to try an anti-inflammatory diet. It’s strict, but nutritious. In 3 days, 72 hours, I was feeling 60% better. It was like a miracle. The pain was manageable but more remarkably, my strength came back too. I had a doctor tell me my pain was gone because I lost weight, but I don’t think it’s possible to lose over a years worth of pain in 72 hours worth of “weight loss.” And even after the new diet, my inflammation levels were still high. Even still, I definitely wasn’t fixed and couldn’t function like I had been able to prior to before all this happened.
You’d think that would be the end, right? Nope. I began to go through periods of feeling… sick. I don’t know how to describe it except I’d be feeling fine, then I’d suddenly be exhausted, nauseous, and achy again.
I began to see an internal medicine doctor. She’s ran tests, and even sent me to a hematologist (for absolutely no reason), and can’t figure out what’s going on. In January, I got majorly sick with bouts of vomiting and fatigue which they claimed was caused by a “low-carb diet.” Considering all I had been able to eat for weeks was noodles and potatoes, I’m not sure that’s possible but they didn’t care enough to listen.
Since getting sick on and off, I’ve had a hard time sticking to my diet which is mainly vegetables, beans, and lean meats. Not exactly the easiest things to stomach. Which means my pain has come back.
Most recently, I landed in the hospital after having the worst spell of nausea of my life. I was vomiting bile, a LOT of bile, continuously and aggressively. My mom took me to the ER where I had to have tons of IV fluids, dextrose, and electrolytes just to get me stabilized. They did an abdominal ultrasound and CT scan and found nothing. My body pain is back in full swing. All they could say was that I was hypoglycemic, was in metabolic acidosis, and had a high WBC. But they couldn’t identify a root cause. I’m so thankful for their efforts though.
I can’t keep living like this. I can’t get a job, I can’t move out, I can’t do anything but try and figure out what is wrong with me so that I can move forward. I don’t know what’s connected and what’s not connected. I can’t find a single doctor that is willing to take a minute to talk with me.
I respect everyone in the medical field and I know I’m not the only patient, but I’m really, really struggling right now. I’m not looking for an immediate diagnosis or a special pill that will make me better. I’m looking for someone that can listen and put together the pieces without giving up or dismissing me.
Is there anything that stands out to you? Is there a medical professional you think I should reach out to? Any advice is appreciated and I’m sorry for the long post. I’m just so tired and upset.

2023.03.29 06:49 Mission-Egg794 The Day I Thought I Won The Lottery

I used to think success was driving down a beach-front highway having to choose between breathing in the new car smell from your convertible, or putting the top down for some salt air.
1 week ago, I had neither of those choices and today the very thought of beach air and new car smell makes me fucking sick.
Before I get into this, let me be clear: this is not a confession of guilt for anything I’ve done. I never wanted all this shit. From the very start it was only about one thing: Getting my son, James a birthday present.
I wasn’t even trying to get him the BEST or the BIGGEST or the most EXPENSIVE birthday present. Just
A present. The present I set out to get.
But instead...
I went to the 7/11 on Santa Monica and bought a MegaMillions lotto ticket.
My name is Daniel Baxter, and this is the day I thought I won the lottery.

April 8, 2022 – 2:03AM
It’s 2 o’clock in the morning and I’m at the Hollywood Casino. I’ve got every penny to my name spread across the craps table and some dickhead on his bachelor party holds the dice of fate in his clammy little hands.
My last 3 meals have been from discarded room service trays at LAX Hilton, my truck doesn’t start without a prayer and the tires have been leaking air for the last month which is fine because now I know the location of every free air filling station in LA County.
If I’d paid my phone bill, it’d be buzzing a crater in my leg from my ex, Lenora, asking if I’d picked up our son’s birthday gift with the $200 she gave me.
“Gave me” isn’t quite the right term. She handed it to me with a scowl then told me “if you gamble this shit you’ll never fucking see him again.” Things had been tense lately.
But none of that matters because this guy’s been hot and it’s with his help that I’ve turned that 200 hundred into almost 3 grand. The only question is; are the rhythms with me or not?
Maybe you call it God. Maybe you call it Karma or the natural vibe of the earth or mercury or whatever. When the rhythms are on, everything goes your way. You crush your yearly review at work and get the raise you’re after or you’re at some party and you’ve got everyone eating outta the palm of your hand.
Most things are math. Craps is math. Poker is math. Phone bills are math. Divorce rates are math and if I keep having to eat off of room service trays, the likelihood of me waking up with diarrhea is math.
It’s all just probability. But when the rhythms are on, the probability doesn’t matter. You could take a 1 and a million shot back-to-back and hit it twice. That’s what the rhythm can do for you.
Summer of 2018 I was up over 2 million. I couldn’t lose a hand of blackjack, I couldn’t crap out if I tried, I couldn’t say the wrong thing to Lenora and every time I walked into the room my son, James, would light up like a fucking lantern.
It used to be me and Lenora at the tables. The place was always open, the food is fine and the drinks are free. If we weren’t at the tables we were in the lounge talking Black Jack strategy or in the bar talking game theory or hanging out at the slots like a couple’a mice pressing a button and waiting for the cheese to pop out.
Sometimes it’s nice to be a mouse. I’ve got rats in my house. They don’t pay rent or go food shopping. All they have to do is avoid eating a piece of death cheese or poison and honestly that’s not too far off from how I live anyways.
When we had James, things changed though. As Lenora put it “risking your son’s dinner isn’t chasing something it’s chasing nothing.” And I guess the 45-minute commute to the Hollywood wasn’t a valuable use of her time. Lots of people commute to work even longer. When I was working at Goldman, I commuted an hour and a half each way from Connecticut. Granted I was on a train but the point is we all commute to work.
It was nice having her here. It was nice seeing James with a smile. It was nice to check my bank account and feel a life raft around me, rather than a black hole forming in my bellybutton.
But the rhythms shifted.
Now it’s just me here next to Lenny with the beard, Jackie with the cigar and Jonie who’s been serving drinks here so long her face should be on the highway billboards. After Lenora broke it off with me she got together with Kelton who works for a hedge fund which (for the record) is still gambling. He’s just doing it with other people’s money.
James’ 9th birthday is three days away. He wants an iPad and soon as I cash out, I’ll be able to pick one up, maybe kick some back to Lenora and spread some cash around to the litany of people I’m on the hook to.
I’m one big night away from wiping it all out. I just need one hit. One night of pure rhythm... and I’ll be back.
The shooter shakes the dice in his hand then tosses ‘em. I watch them clack on the table walls below me, but before they even settle on the pass line, I can already feel the star implode in my stomach.
In a flash, my hard work is raked away by some new guy named Carl with a moustache and not a single ounce of sympathy.
The party’s at Lenora (and Kelton’s) which was fine because honestly, I didn’t just have rats.
The rats came in chasing the cockroaches but when a bunch of them got into my Cadbury Mini Egg stash and died under the living room floor, a pack of fleas picked the carcass clean before making their way into the carpet above. So, yeah...at the moment I have fleas, cockroaches and rats. I had a bug bomb guy coming in a couple days but things were gonna be a little itchy until then.
It's three days until the party. I’ve got no gift and if I show up without that 200 bucks I may never see my kid again.

April 8, 2022 – 6:32AM
There’s only so much you can do on a security guard’s salary and being paid $12 an hour to guard millions of dollars in Mercedes automobiles is hilarious. What am I supposed to do if some guy comes in to steal a car? Lay my life on the line and hope my out-of-pocket HMO covers bullet wounds?
I don’t even have dental. I got a root canal that needed to be recapped 10 minutes after it was put in.
I’ve been on Mr. Jenkins about a raise but he keeps telling me “we gotta sell more cars, Davey,” as if I’m the one selling cars. I’m a fucking security guard what the hell’s that gotta do with me? Last I checked it was my job to keep cars on the lot and getting them off was yours.
Jenkins owns every car dealer on Van Nuys. Maybe you’ve seen his ads on TV where he slides into frame wearing a suit while riding a surfboard just to say “COME ON DOWN!” He can afford to buy a surfboard for tv ad that has no mention of surfing or aquatic sports of any kind but he can’t pay me an extra $3 an hour so I can re-introduce cold foods to my diet.
I spend most of my shift eyeing the mint green on onyx black SLS convertible they keep in the lobby. It’s flashy but it’s got a nut sack under the hood so you know you could back it up if you went toe-to-toe with some clown at a red light. Sometimes I just stare at it but I never touch it. I only wanna touch it when it’s mine. Which it would be...
Maybe I could steal it and sell it to get the iPad and some other shit. I know all the codes but then again I wouldn’t need the whole car. The thing costs half a mill. Maybe I could lift a rear-view mirror. Who would notice? Then again with the way the rhythm’s set I’d probably bump into the fucking FBI on the way out.
I’ve been doing my best to get things together but the cards aren’t falling my way and there’s not much you can really do about that. I’ve been going to the Hollywood for 15 years so I know I’m due for a run.
Me and Lenny talking about this all the time at the lounge. Sometimes you’re on the downbeat and sometimes you’re on the upbeat. Lately I feel like it’s been all downs but the thing about being a father though, is that you’re not the only one on that ride.
It used to be that I could take a few down weeks or months even. Sleep in the car, call the landlord and talk them out of breaking down the door but when you got a kid everything changes. You suffer, he suffers. Lately Lenora’s been paying for that but you see she keeps a tally. She says she doesn’t but she does.
Every time she has to pay for something she looks at me like I’m the biggest piece of shit then says “It’s ok, David.” Which it really isn’t.
The fees and stuff aren’t the real problem. It’s being able to take James out and take care of him. She wants to take that away from me and honestly I don’t blame her.
Last week my card got declined trying to pay for ice cream. James had already eaten half of his and the lady made us give it back. He didn’t talk to me the whole way home then 2 days later Lenora told me James didn’t really like spending time with me anymore. A week after that she filed for sole custody and told me they were thinking about moving to Chicago. Who the fuck would want to live there? It’s cold as fuck and the people are assholes.

April 8, 2022 – 12:20PM
I do pickups for a porta-john company on the side. It’s just temporary. I don’t clean the shit I just spray down the units and suck out cans and shit with a wet-vac before this guy named Pete sticks a hose in the back and drains the whole thing out.
I’m always surprised by what people put on the walls of a john. Usually it’s just drawings like hearts and shit but sometimes the rhythm finds you there too. One time I spotted a phone number Sharpied on a toilet seat but it was missing 1 number. 8 digits. Kinda like 4 roulette numbers right?
I took em to the Hollywood and won 5 grand on one roll! Hasn’t worked again for me yet... but that’s the thing about it man.
But today I’m cleaning out a row of johns after some music festival which by the way is far and away the worst clean ups to get. Sure you see these kids all cleaned up online in some tweed outfit or some shit but you should see the shit that comes out of these kids. It’s like paving tar with glitter and red bull cans.
I look down in the last john I’m hosing down and I see something. Peaking out of the mounds I see: a $20 bill.
I stared at it for a second but I could hear Pete coming down the line about to suck it into oblivion. I never seen cash in the john before. Sometimes you hear a coin clank through the hose but a 20 bill just staring you right in the face?
I did what any man would do. I grabbed it and when I pulled my hand out I was half expecting it to be missing a layer of skin.
Later I’m sitting in the truck staring at this 20 bucks thinking “why would this come to me?” There had to be a reason. It wasn’t just on the floor of some john. It was in the last john after the nastiest event at a time when all I needed was one shot.
It was the rhythm.
But having to do that for just $20 didn’t add up. There had to have been a greater purpose and you know what they say about money. You don’t let it sleep. You wanna get that money out and get it working.
Craps kicked my teeth in this morning and you can’t do shit with 20 bucks on a blackjack table. I had to think bigger.
Then I’m driving home from work and I see the 7/11. Powerball was at 2.11 BILLION. The biggest in history. If you got all 6 numbers right you got the whole chicken. If you got 5 you got just shy of 8 million bucks. Boom.
I had my usual numbers but this wasn’t a usual day. I told the cashier to give me “all randoms today.” 10 slips at $2 each.
That night I sat down on my couch waiting for the Powerball to come on tv... then I blacked out.
The next thing I knew I was staring at 6 numbers lit up on my tv screen: 08, 07, 14, 29, 40, 16
And on my slip: 08, 07, 14, 29, 40, 22
I had 5 out of 6 numbers. I’d just won 8 million dollars

April 9, 2022 – 9:01AM
I’m standing in line at the California Lottery Offices. It’s not some huge expansive place. It’s a shitty little line up of people with various ailments trying to dispute their $5 winning ticket.
My mind is racing. Who do I pay back first? Do they give me the cash here? Is it in a duffel bag? When do I have to hold that big ass check? Do I wear a mask? I saw a guy do it in a scream mask once to maintain his anonymity. Honestly it might be nice to be seen. Not only has everyone seen me as a piece of shit forever but also I haven’t exactly kept a detailed list of everyone I owe money to.
It’d be good for people to just hit me up, I can cut a check and tell them “thanks for your patience.” Maybe I’d even give them a little off the top as a tip.
The guy a the counter basically spat in my face; “It’s gotta be reviewed. Takes 2-5 days. We’ll email you a link to collect any winnings.” It was like I just accused him of something. No congratulations or anything which at first, I was pissed about but then I realized that clearly I wasn’t the first asshole who thought they won the lottery.
Except I really did. 2-5 days was nothing. I’d been living in the shit for years I could do another few days.
Stepping outside, everything looked the same. The air wasn’t purer or the sunlight any more sunlightier and I still had to fill up my tires at the Shell on Cahuenga. There’s something about being rich without actually having any appearance of being rich.
That secret alone is like having a bomb in your pocket. People treat you regular, they smile and make conversation but deep down you think...if I pulled this out I could kill you with it.
But when people do think you have money, the more of it they give you.
I rolled in the doors of the Hollywood like I always did. Lenny called me a bullshitter, Jackie barely even put her cigarette down and Jonie didn’t even bring me a drink because I didn’t actually have any money on the table. I didn’t even have money in my pocket. I’d spent it all on the Megamillions and I hadn’t eaten since perusing the halls for leftover room service the night before.
Then news hit. My face was on every TV in the place. “Local man wins 8 million dollar jackpot.”
I checked my phone to see if it was blowing up, then remembered I still hadn’t paid the bill in months. So I was good there.

April 9, 2022 – 11:11AM
If you’ve ever been on a casino floor you know that it’s never silent. But I swear to God if you were on the floor when that news hit, you could’ve heard the rats eating my Mini Eggs 20 miles away. Everyone’s eyes were trained on me. For a second I even felt all the security cams shift over in my direction.
I couldn’t stand being on the floor with nothing to play with so Lenny set me up with his guy who got me a little walking around money. Japanese guy who I met in a Burger King across the street. Weird dude. Not sure what his name was.
I didn’t wanna go too nuts so I just took out a small loan. 50k at 20 points. I thought about it for a second then realized I didn’t really give a shit about the interest. 10 grand to me in a week doesn’t mean nearly as much as 50 does now. It’s just value proposition. It would have been stupid NOT to take out the loan honestly.
Walking into the casino with 50 grand in my pocket and slamming it down on the table feels a lot like taking out your dick at an orgy only when your dick comes out it’s a 60 foot cigarette boat with flames painted on the side.
But then I learned what I remembered years ago. Losing money and gaining money at that point meant almost nothing.
So losing 2 grand a hand wasn’t such a big deal because I could be making 5 on the next. That’s why I needed a little more when I lost the full 50.
Another 100k or so at another 20 points should do the trick.
It didn’t take long to realize that both winning and losing money meant almost nothing to me. So I ventured out.
A tailored suit for me (ready in 2-3 days on a rush).
An iPad for James with all the bells and whistles.
6 dozen roses sent to Lenora’s house signed “your secret admirer.” just to fuck with Kelton.
A watch for me, Lenny and Jodie.
Some special cigar Jackie had always been eyeing.
New pairs of Nikes for all of us.
And a limousine to my dentist’s office.
I paid in cash for the cap replacement, they gave me some pills and told me not to mix them with alcohol but honestly I was a little distracted by the old molar cap sitting on the table. I had an idea.
“Are you gonna just throw that away?” I asked her.
By now I realized I didn’t have a phone to receive my winnings via email. So, I stopped a guy in the lobby and paid him 2 grand cash for his before popping a few pills and slugging some champagne in the limo.
There was barely enough time to sit back and relax. I had a lifetime of debt and yearning for shit to burn through.
We made it to the Mercedes dealership but the pain killers kicked in and I could barely feel my hands as they ran across the SLS’s mint green paint. Bummer.
Jenkins sauntered over asking if I was working today and all I remember saying was “I want it.” He scrunched his eyebrows in confusion, so I put the remaining cash I had down on the table and said it again. “I WANT IT.”
They ran my credit (which was dog shit. Didn’t matter) and I looked Jenkins in his fat little face again and said “I don’t give a fuck.” He sold it to me, financed at 25 percent interest. Then when he went to fetch my paperwork and keys I took a shit on his desk, shoved the molar cap and a $20 bill in it before using his jacket to wipe my ass. Felt right. Don’t really know why.
I had walked into the CA lottery offices at 9am to start the review process on my ticket’s authenticity.
By 11am, I was watching news break from the Hollywood Casino.
By 10pm I had accrued more debt than a small country.
I hadn’t received a dime from the lotto.
And I needed more walking around money.

April 10, 11, 12 – who the fuck knows what time
The next few days were a blur but there are a few things I’ll never forget.
Quitting my job.
Hiring the limo for the week.
Trying to shit after 3 days of having nothing but fast food, champagne and pain killers.
Fielding questions at the party from Kelton’s asshole friends who told me “lotto rich isn’t real rich.”
And the heat of my house burning to the ground as James and I stood there watching with a can of gas in our hands.
He didn’t even want the iPad.
The rhythms were sliding back. James had that smile plastered back in his face and even Lenora was happy to see me.

April 16, 7:35AM
“Dear Mr. Baxter. Congratulations! You’ve successfully matched FOUR of six winning numbers. Below please find a link to collect your winnings of $10,000.”
I read it over and over again. Over and over and over.
When I called the offices an nice woman on the phone informed me that due to a printing malfunction the ticket had appeared to show the number 8 when in fact it was a 6.
They even managed to maintain a sense of excitement. I mean why wouldn’t they? They think I just won $10,000. They had no idea I’d bought a car I couldn’t afford, burned my house down, taken a shit on my boss’ desk, maxed out 3 new credit cards and borrowed a inordinate amount of money from people at a borderline illegal interest rate.
The limo company took my ride away and with no home I’ve spent the last 2 days parked on the Pacific Coast Highway, sleeping in the brand new Mercedes I can’t afford, in a suit I shouldn’t have bought, showering in the YMCA down the street, and eating 2-day-old coconut shrimp.
All of a sudden I’m fucked again. But as I stare out at the Pacific, my phone dings. It’s an alert from the Chase banking app. My lotto winnings of $10,000 have just hit my account and the only question is...
Are the rhythms with me or not?

2023.03.29 06:20 yousureimnotarobot Misunderestimated

A one-shot. Vote (the pointy thing upwards) and enjoy!
--------------------
The Xeno looked like he should be sitting on a Cathedral somewhere pissing rain down on the tourists. He also wouldn’t shut up
“I told you, I’m not a fucking engineer, pilot, Superman or whatever other weird ideas you have about humans. I’m a Xeno Paleoarchelogist and I’m wearing the wrong pants for a pirate attack. My grant doesn’t cover it and neither does my health insurance.”
The crests on his annoying companion raised in surprise, “Well I have no idea what that means but it must be useful! I have better pants that you may borrow if that would help?”
Warren held on to his chair tightly as another explosion rattled his teeth. Twenty minutes ago he had been enjoying the peace of a dull commute with a good book. Now he was in serious shit with nothing but whatever the Xeno equivalent of a nerd was. He should have known from the way the guy had lit up like it was his fucking birthday on sitting beside a ‘real’ human on his trip into the dark.
When the shaking calmed down he looked at his unlikely companion, “I study history, your history, everyone's history and see what matches up with ours. In particular, I study the utilisation of fire in prehistory as an indicator of future galactic development.”
He might as well have been speaking in pig-Latin and asking for a donation for the rebuilding of Pompei for all the Xeno seemed to understand.
The Xeno seemed to be considering something and then spoke in a sudden burst as if he was afraid the universe might interrupt him, “I am Ni’urn, Senior-Second Programmer of the Third-Shift of Numbers of Importance and I also study. I study combinations of numbers and I recommend the best ones. I cannot be captured by pirates! My department would be horrified!”
This was the problem with dumb translations since Warren heard ‘office geek that lived in a basement’ when he was actually being told, “I am the Second in Command of the third sector of our planet's military: space. I study patterns of warfare within the galaxy and our local space and recommend countermeasures to deal with foreseen problems. My death or capture will result in confusion and possible overreaction by our military.”
What Ni’urn heard from his new human companion was, “I am a human specialist responsible for fire and I am without my equipment.”
The obvious solution was to find some way for the human to utilise his skills in fire, a most useful thing in a battle with pirates.
Ni’urn ran the numbers in his head, “We are on a civilian ship from the In’Tec people. They make poor ships but cheap. Since your people stopped their previous activities I must think that they are unfamiliar with important things like escape pods since we have not been offered one. My projections indicate that this ship was probably refitted from a pirate vessel. Do you concur?”
Warren looked around at the slightly squashed cabin and took a wild guess, “Sure, why not? If these guys were pirates then either they are still working with them or they might have held onto some of the systems they used to use. No one gives up firepower if they can help it. I’m not sure how that helps us!”
Ni’urn added that to his numbers, “I concur. It is a most useful insight. We have just under eighteen minutes before the ship either surrenders to slavers and thieves or fails completely and explodes so I propose we seek to take immediate control of the vessel. I have sufficient understanding to undertake to pilot the vessel and you will be responsible for finding and using the weapons you believe they have concealed. Do you concur?”
Warren was still struggling with the ‘Eighteen minutes until we die’ when the Xeno grabbed him and pushed him forward towards the door. He thought the creature had been driven mad with fear and decided to chance it on his own. The Xeno had babbled something about Escape Pods so he pulled open the door and began running. He no longer cared where he was running to but he was damned sure of what he was running away from.
He was nearly back to rational thought when someone suddenly appeared in front of him and raised a weapon towards his face. Warren needed those brown pants really badly but he was moving too fast to stop so he tried to drop his head, just as the much-abused ship's systems flickered and the gravity went offline for a second.
To Ni’urn it appeared as if the human had sprinted at unbelievable speed from the cabin and when one of the pirates had dropped his camouflage to shoot him he had simply lowered his head and charged his assailant. He watched the pirate shatter as the human seemed to fly into him, its weapon thrown wildly and his armour crushed against the corridor wall. He hurried to catch up.
Warren took the blow to his head badly and felt blood begin to trickle into his eyes. Without thinking he pushed the blood away and leaned down to the Xeno he had crashed into. Shit. He couldn’t help him and didn’t particularly care but he thought he should not leave the creature with a weapon. He himself had never used one and had no idea of how the thing worked but maybe he could give it to someone in authority. Later. He began running again with the gun forgotten in his hand as the blood and pain narrowed his eyes. How fucking big was this ship anyway? The escape pods must be near the pilot, it made no sense otherwise.
‘Remarkable’ Ni’urn said to the dead pirate. “I have heard the human expression that you never know what will hit you but I didn’t realise it was literal.” He stepped over the corpse and followed his fire human.
The problem with running around like headless poultry is that it always ends badly for someone. Warren was finding that out the hard way as he found himself with a bleeding head, a raging headache and absolutely no idea of where he was on the ship. On the upside, no one seemed to be shooting at him or the ship. He stopped for breath and began to calm down and then he heard the footsteps. Someone was coming.
Ni’urn was growing more and more curious as his human friend threw himself forward into the maze of corridors without pause. If he was willing to entertain the thought he would have said the route that he was taking was…unusual, but it had evaded all the crew and pirates and he had brought them safely to the bridge. He had followed the thumping feet as they echoed down the shaky corridors and until then heard them falter and stop. Good, he had not been forgotten and his ally was obviously waiting for him to catch up.
He reflected that perhaps they hadn’t avoided anyone but that any enemy hearing the thumping human's arrival, seeing it covered in its lurid red blood and casually holding a weapon had simply gotten quickly out of the way.
------
On the bridge of the unfortunate ship the Beautiful Bounty there were two very unhappy Captains. One of them was dressed slightly less formally than the other but they could not be mistaken for anything other than family, bickering in front of some heavily armed men, “I told you we had a human and a high-value target. The human is some academic, not a warrior, just a teacher. He’s not important. We need the local, the Command Staff guy. He’s the one making all the plans around here.”
The In’tec pirate laughed, “Really? Because I can see the same cameras that you can and the human has already slaughtered one of mine in cold blood, stolen his gun and is now tearing through the ship looking for the rest of us. He’s probably going to be outside the door in a few minutes. I’m done. I’m not fighting a human again. You weren’t there. Even if I kill him the rest of his kind will come looking for me and they never fucking stop! You do whatever the fuck you want but me and my men are out of here.”
The Captain of the Beautiful Bounty seemed to shrink, “But I…I turned off the defences to do this. I’m screwed. I’ll spend years in a penal colony when they read the incident report. The local guy is really important...I’m fucked.” He seemed to realise that he had thrown his entire life into the toilet for nothing. If the pirates wouldn’t fight, his crew definitely wouldn’t and he didn’t want to face the creature alone. He looked at the vid as the crazed and bloodied creature ran towards the bridge, towards him.
The whole room heard and felt someone - something- run heavily towards the door and then stop. Then silence.
The In’tec pirate shook himself, “Fine, you can come with us. Now.” He turned to the bridge staff and his own men, “Move or you stay to deal with that fucking mad species.”
He didn’t waste any more words, running to his breaching craft that was currently embedded in the bridge and followed by every crewman on the bridge. It was a well-practised manoeuvre for most of them and it took less than a minute for them all to pile through the joining fields.
----------
Warren groaned when the annoying Xeno suddenly reappeared. He had tried to figure out the weapon but it wasn't made for humans, it was some weird thing that you obviously needed the correct training to use. He still held it in case he needed to hit something but then he wiped some more dried blood out of his eyebrows and finally realised he had been an idiot to the innocent Xeno, “Good to see you again. I’m afraid the ‘fight or flight ‘ instinct is strong in my people but I shouldn’t have behaved so poorly. Since we are both still here I assume the pirates are boarding? Do you have any suggestions? Are you uninjured?”
Ni’urn was pleased to see the human was alert and capable of intelligent questions.
What he understood was that his ally was pleased with his survival and looking for his understanding and preferred countermeasures. An admirable trait that was so rare in warriors. It still looked like a horror but that's aliens for you.
“I believe this is the correct door. I estimate that we will succeed if you enter first. When you have subdued the bridge I will then take control of the navigation and bring us to safety. You must find fire control and prepare to disable the pirate ship. They should not be permitted to rampage in the system or seek revenge against us.”
The human seemed to consider it for a moment and then handed him the weapon. Of course, he was probably feeling protective. This was a trait he had read about in his Intel reports of the species. They must be bonded in the humans mind. Well, that was slightly embarrassing.
Warren looked at the gun and gave up. He handed it to the Xeno, maybe he had seen them in the movies or done basic training. From what the nerd said they needed to take the bridge and then find the weapons before the pirates blew the ship up to cover their tracks. Another deadline. “Alright, you wave that thing around and let me take a swipe at anyone still standing. We are both going to die.”
Ni’urn assumed that that was some warrior's creed and tried to respond, “Indeed, but not today.” He pointed at one of the doors leading off from the corridor, “That is where we must go. I will open it and you will act. I shall endeavour to cover you with the gun but it is not recommended for use on a ship and would probably destroy vital systems should I try. I shall, as you suggest, ‘wave it about’.”
All Warren heard was that the Xeno didn’t know how to shoot and the door was right in front of him. His plan to run into the pointy-end had been correct it seemed. He just nodded and pushed hard on the door.
Ni’urn was surprised when it shifted easily under the human's hand. Breaching the bridge was always notoriously difficult but the human didn’t even slow down.
Warren figured the various fire and damage alarms currently ringing through the ship had opened every lock, especially on a civilian ship that carried his people. Any engineer he had ever met would have melted it down for ballast if it didn’t. He opened the door to an empty room.
“Well, that was easier than I expected. Go do your thing and I’ll see what they have to play with.”
He couldn’t believe it, he wasn’t going to get shot. Whatever the pirates wanted they had taken and left. He was just a bystander but what the fuck… he watched the Xeno move with the fussy authority of someone that spends their days at this kind of shit. The guy seemed to grow a foot taller when he began programming or piloting or whatever the hell he was doing.
He found a panel on the Captain's console. It looked like it had been nailed on and it was definitely not supposed to be there. It had a big red button and a sign that read ‘Emergency’ in several languages but most of them were incorrectly spelled, something that always annoyed him. He hit the button and nothing happened. Surprise. Thirty seconds later he had pried it off to find a small screen and six buttons, four with arrows, one kind of beige and one red.
He hit the beige one and the screen seemed to flicker until another ship appeared. The pirate? There was no one else for a dozen light-years. It even came with crosshairs that suddenly turned green when it thought it was pointing at the right thing.
Revenge. His or theirs..who would ever know? He didn’t but he hit the red button anyway.
-----
Ni’urn was struggling with the debriefing. “It is as I have told you: once I had informed the human of our predicament he acted immediately, killing the first pirate we encountered and seizing its weapon. It then evaded all opposition until it reached the bridge and waited for my instruction. Once we had breached the bridge he sought out the hidden weapons system and annihilated the pirate ship. I piloted us into safe space and he immediately disembarked and left for Earth space. I do not understand why you are having issues with this. It is plainly visible on the recovered files and I have no reason to lie about the event. I was hardly heroic, I took no part except the piloting of the ship once we were safe.”
The supervisor looked sympathetic, “You are aware of their XCC? Their central authority for any…events that take place outside their space. They report that the human, the one that you refer to as Warren, has no memory of any such details. Apparently, a Xeno ‘that was good with numbers’ looked after the whole thing. He has refused the bounty on the pirate ship and the salvage of the Beautiful Bounty.
Ni’urn didn’t have anything left to add, but he could read these numbers.
The supervisor continued, “The XCC has sent us the documentation signing any and all such claims to you. If the vast amount of money wasn’t enough, the humans have also offered you free transport and employment should you choose to move to their space. You cannot work in intelligence for us when a foreign power is taking such a close interest in you.”
The supervisor stood up and Ni’urn shakily followed, “It is the opinion of this commission that you will be transferred into Xeno relations and provided with a rebuilt Beautiful Bounty as your ship. Your Captain papers and license have been issued along with the bounty on the pirates. Your ship will remain in the control of our fleet until your retirement and then will pass to you. Congratulations, Captain Ni’urn.”

[Tournament] The Legend of Whitebeard, Edward Newgate

\"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” -Patrick Rothfuss
The desire for freedom is powerful, but the desire to protect family is equally powerful. The order of the World Government is powerful, accepted by citizens and enforced by the Marines. To disagree with the Government is to disagree with the World that they establish. This can force good people to make a choice between freedom and family. But when a man can enforce his own order, establish his family and their freedom through his own power, even against the World's status quo, he will always be able to live with those two great necessities in harmony.
The key to this is power. If an entity, whether an individual or a group, wants to be free, they must have the power to do so. The stronger you are, the freer you are. Your strength will scare off certain obstacles, power through others.
So, what must you become to be the world's freest?
The World's Strongest.

The Life of Edward Newgate

Edward Newgate was born on Sphinx Island 74 years ago. At a young age, the orphan Newgate found his island too impoverished to pay the Celestial Dragon's tax, the Heavenly Tribute, and thus were denied membership with the World Government. To support his village, Newgate set out to sea as a pirate and used the treasure he gathered to help out monetarily. However, with no one to look forward to coming home to, all Newgate ever desired as a pirate was to have a family.
In his young life, Newgate joined the Rocks Pirates under captain Rocks D. Xebec. He stayed as one of the crew's members until Captain Rocks went after God Valley, an incident involving the Celestial Dragons. On God Valley, the Rocks Pirates were defeated by Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp and pirate Gol D. Roger, and the crew disbanded.
Newgate went on to form his own pirate crew, the Whitebeard Pirates, with him as their eponymous captain. Among the crew's members during the era preceding the Great Pirate Era were Marco "the Phoenix," "Diamond" Jozu, "Flower Sword" Vista and, for a time, the great samurai of Wano, Kozuki Oden. This crew was known as the only rival to Roger Pirates under Gol D. Roger, and would fight with the crew for days at a time. Newgate and Roger were well known as the greatest pirates of their time, with Newgate having gathered the reputation of "The World's Strongest Man," and were on good enough terms for Roger to borrow Newgate's "brother," Oden, and share the secrets of the Will of D. with Newgate, even offering to tell him where Laugh Tale was. But Newgate refused, as he already had what he wanted from life in his crew: a family.
When the Pirate King was executed, with "Golden Lion" Shiki's escape from Impel Down and disappearance, Newgate was the undisputed King of the Seas, the man closest to the One Piece. With the Great Pirate Era, the great pirate Whitebeard, alongside his former Rocks Pirates crew mates Charlotte "Big Mom" Linlin and "The World's Strongest Creature" Kaido, became known as an Emperor of the Sea, an unbeatable force in the New World. Eventually, "Red Hair" Shanks rose to their status as well, and the four pirates were renowned as the Yonko.
Perhaps the most dangerous pirates to join the Whitebeard Pirates were the young "Fire Fist" Portgas D. Ace, the only son of the Pirate King, and Marshall D. Teach, the pirate who would one day be known as "Blackbeard." One day, the Whitebeard Pirates' 4th Divison Commander, Thatch, found the Yami Yami no Mi, a Logia Devil Fruit regarded as the most dangerous of all. Marshall D. Teach killed him in cold blood, ate the Devil Fruit and abandoned the ship to form his own pirate crew, the Blackbeard Pirates. Ace chased him down and was captured, then given over to the Marines. The Marines announced his execution.

And thus began the Paramount War.
The Whitebeard Pirates and their entire fleet invaded Marineford and fought in war against the Navy and the Seven Warlords of the Sea in a war that changed the world. With the additional support of "Straw Hat" Monkey D. Luffy, the Whitebeard Pirates freed Ace, but before he could escape the island, the Navy Admiral "Akainu" Sakazuki killed Ace. As Newgate's crew attempted to escape, the Blackbeard Pirates infiltrated Marineford and fought Newgate himself.
At the age of 72, with an incurable illness, no scars from cowardice and a bounty from the World Government of 5,046,000,000 Berries, the great pirate Edward "Whitebeard" Newgate died standing at the hand of Marshall D. "Blackbeard" Teach in the War of the Best at Marineford.
Whitebeard's death led to the rise of his former apprentice as the next Emperor of the Sea, the only man who ate two Devil Fruits and lived. All of his territories that he had protected were left to the hands of criminals. The home of the Marines was decimated and they moved their base closer to the New World. But it was the death of the man who stood in front of the throne of the Pirate King and his dying words that sparked a new light in the dying flame of the Great Pirate Era:

A Full Analysis of the Power of the World's Strongest Man

\"It may well be us who will meet our end here today, for that man...\" -Fleet Admiral Sengoku
The great enemy of sailors and pirates alike is the anger of the ocean that separates land from land, the sea that traps men wherever they are. Laws will not stop the wave from crashing into the city; battleships will not deter the whirlpool's twirl; the hunger of the Blue will not be satisfied by pleas for mercy. If one is to fight pirates, they may become a bounty hunter that hunts the greatest of pirates to become a rich man. If one wishes to bring down the World Government, they may join the Revolutionary Army under Monkey D. Dragon. But no armies, no Ancient Weapon, no physical prowess will win a war with the sea. You may win every battle, but defeat is inevitable. Even the great powers offered by the Devil Fruits are rendered most useless against the ocean, with those who eat them losing their strength in the sea's presence. In this sense, those with powers are even more vulnerable to the ocean than the average man.
If a man held the power to command the waves, and ally himself with the power of the ocean, he would truly be seen as a monster among monsters, for he would possess the power of the world, and the power to destroy the world.
That is the power of the Gura Gura no Mi.
The Aqua Laguna that threatens the City of Water is a perfect example of this threat. Every action taken around retrieving Nico Robin and the blueprints for Pluton, both by CP9's superhumans and by the Straw Hats allied with Water 7, was based on the threat of the Aqua Laguna. In the end, CP9 had to leave ahead of the storm, and it took both Luffy and Zoro to successfully protect their sea train from crashing into the Aqua Laguna's waves. The dread of Aqua Laguna, at least until the invention of the sea train, was that the entirety of Water 7 would be destroyed, and it is exactly this that makes the ocean so terrifying. The unrelenting strength of the sea that gives life to all can take life on a scale unprecedented if given the inclination. An island with all its history and culture, countless families, unique flora and fauna, iconic landscape and powerful civilizations, can be totally wiped away and returned to sender if the wrath of Mother Nature is stirred in the wrong manner.
The Gura Gura no Mi offers its user the weight of tectonic plates, the might of continental landmasses colliding. It can trigger quakes in the earth or surrounding sea with impossible speed and scale, or all the energy therein can be focused directly onto a target. All it takes is a simple punch to disturb the atmosphere on other landmasses horizons away, to threaten islands from across the seas. All it takes is the swing of your arms to leave everyone who's feet touches the same earth as yours at the mercy of the world.
However, would this be enough to be seen by the world at large as the World's Strongest Man? The Emperor Blackbeard possesses exactly this cataclysmic potential in addition to a second Devil Fruit, an evil Fruit that cancels the Fruit abilities of all others upon touch, yet he does not enjoy such a reputation. What exactly is the apprentice lacking that the captain held?
Whitebeard was born with the rare advantage of the Haki of the Supreme King, or Conqueror's Haki. While all who work toward it can utilize Observation Haki, for superior sensing, and Armament Haki, for invisible armor, Conqueror's Haki allows a man to vanquish armies by the tens of thousands without moving a muscle. Haki is all but essential for those who wish to pass through the first half of the Grand Line and make a name for themselves in the New World. If you possess incredible Haki, then even those with the greatest of Fruit powers would be beneath your boot unless they could match your Haki with their own. Roger took the world by storm with just the might of his Haki, and both his partner Silvers Rayleigh and his apprentice Shanks managed to gain incredible reputations of their own without any Fruit powers. The World's Strongest Swordsman, Dracule Mihawk, was also not in need of superpowers to gain his title.
Whitebeard's Haki was advanced to its absolute limits, with there being direct proof of Whitebeard using the same advanced applications of Armament Haki (projecting the force of his attack outward, not needing to touch anything to damage it) and Conqueror's Haki (lacing his attack in the Haki, multiplying the strength of the attack) as Roger, both in style and strength. While it currently unproven that Whitebeard advanced his Observation Haki to the point of seeing the future, the same is true of Roger, and since it can reasonably be suspected that the Pirate King who conquered the world without a Devil Fruit is at least capable of basic Future Sight, the same should be suspected of his equal in Whitebeard who would not be able to properly match him with such a glaring disadvantage. The only Haki techniques that cannot be given to Whitebeard by benefit of the doubt are the internal destruction and Observation Killing techniques that have been demonstrated by only other elite Haki users.
The final supplement to Whitebeard's arsenal is his weapon. The naginata, Murakumogiri, is one of only a dozen Supreme Grade Blades in the entire world, other notable examples being Roger's Ace and Mihawk's Yoru. It is as tall as a small building and thus has incredible weight to back up its sharp blade. The durability of the weapon lasted throughout the decades as Whitebeard used it in combat to supplement his tremendous threat to even greater heights, making him just as lethal an opponent as any swordsman.
Even without the Gura Gura no Mi, Haki or Murakumogiri, Whitebeard is still an incredible force on account of his body alone. Standing 21'10, Whitebeard was stronger than the giants of War-Land Elbaf, proving such at the Paramount War against even the largest of Vice Admirals. Despite his size, Whitebeard could fight with impressive speed and leap incredible distances. But his toughness was of an unparalleled tier; in old age and sickness, Whitebeard fought through the entire Paramount War while taking hundreds of bullet wounds, stab wound, cannon wounds and even attacks from the Admirals that blew holes in his body and took half his head off, yet even after receiving enough battle scars to kill a small army, Whitebeard was only defeated once the Blackbeard Pirates entered the scene. He died with enough strength to stay standing. At his heyday, Whitebeard was known to hold fights for days without stopping and still be raring to go.
From every angle, Whitebeard can only be viewed as an elite among elites. Few could beat him in a purely physical sense, few possessed weaponry that rivaled his, few trained their Haki to the heights that he did, and few ate Devil Fruits that are as powerful as his own. No other character can lay claim to having peaked in every single one of these aspects the way that Whitebeard did. All these things in tandem are what make Edward Newgate known as the World's Strongest Man.

The Narrative Importance of Whitebeard

https://preview.redd.it/d64gpwyrolqa1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=e1c107a2c6ec6a67a218ad7b3311d7d5acc73892
Alongside Marshall D. Teach and Thatch, Edward Newgate is one of the three characters (besides Edward Weevil, his supposed son) that Oda trusted with pieces of the name of Edward "Thatch" Teach, known popularly in the real world as Blackbeard the Pirate. While Whitebeard is a direct reference to that name, Edward quite literally is the notorious pirate's name. But Edward is not the only important aspect of his name. Newgate can be seen as a reference to the character's importance in the world, with his death opening a New Gate for pirates in the world, changing the world with his demise in the same way the Pirate King did upon his execution. Doflamingo makes clear the necessity of Whitebeard to the order of the Great Pirate Era and directly ties the chaos of the new, worse generation to his absence.
Whitebeard has a direct narrative parallel with Shanks, as both Emperors (the only two introduced in the Great Pirate Era) were the mentor figures to the seed of the worst criminals in history, Roger's son Ace and Dragon's son Luffy, respectively. Both were the only Emperors to show up to Marineford, and the only moral ones anyway. While they aren't perfect reflections of each other, there are definite similarities. And besides Ace, Whitebeard was also the "mentor," or predecessor, of Blackbeard. Two of the most important pirates in the entire story, both under the banner of Whitebeard.
As far as the Yonko system itself goes, Whitebeard was the one who gave them their initial hype. When Garp introduces the concept of the Yonko system to the audience, he uses Whitebeard's name to establish just how impressive Shanks' membership in the system was. We are able to see this because being a Yonko isn't even the penultimate of Whitebeard's statuses; it is directly overshadowed by his reputation as the World's Strongest Man, which itself was only established well because he was Roger's equal. More simply, the hierarchy of Whitebeard's titles goes
The Pirate King's Rival > The World's Strongest Man/Pirate > An Emperor of the Sea
The only other rival to Roger was Garp, who himself was introduced in practically the same way as Whitebeard; other notable names include Shiki and Sengoku, but both were definitively overshadowed by Newgate and Garp. This puts Whitebeard among an exclusive duo: Edward Newgate and Monkey D. Garp.
The only other people to possess a World's Strongest title are Kaido, the World's Strongest Creature, and Mihawk, the World's Strongest Swordsman. This puts Whitebeard among an exclusive trio: Edward Newgate, Kaido and Dracule Mihawk.
And of course, the Four Emperors were a quintet: Edward Newgate, Kaido, Charlotte Linlin and Shanks (later "Blackbeard" Teach, Joy Boy and Buggy as a joke through Mihawk), with Whitebeard singled out as the senior and most notable of them all. On top of these titles, he was seen as the man closest to One Piece, the de-facto Pirate King essentially. No other character has enjoyed the quantity and quality of prestigious reputation that Edward Newgate did, and it is Whitebeard's elderly, sick power that offered the audience a true introduction to the Emperor's power.
https://i.redd.it/3v2nspb9rlqa1.gif
The introduction, of course, was the War at Marineford. To beat Whitebeard in a war was of such importance, was such a monumental task, that Sengoku had Warlords imprisoned merely for refusing to fight for them and gathered the largest force seen before or since just to hold off the Whitebeard Pirates, despite no pirate besides Newgate himself being remotely strong enough to defeat even a single Navy Admiral. Whitebeard fighting the Marines was the cause for worldwide panic and prayers, no doubt due to the god-like scale of his earthquakes. Whitebeard was not allowed by the story to enter the War until he had already been stabbed, and throughout he suffered heart attacks due to his disease. Everything done by Oda was to show that Whitebeard was no longer the same Pirate King's rival, the true monster he used to be.
And Sengoku knew this.
Yet he still put every single resource available, powers that could otherwise be used to protect the Celestial Dragons in the Holy Land, on Marineford, knowing the threat they faced better than perhaps anyone else in the Marines. The strongest Admiral, Sakazuki, learned this threat the hard way when he felt the wrath of a half-dead Whitebeard, effected more by just two of his island-devastating punches than the pirate was by his own head being melted away.

Conclusion

GURARARARARA!
Edward Newgate, the great pirate Whitebeard, possessed might that is rarer than generations. Inhuman physical prowess, world-class weapon, primed Haki and cataclysmic Devil Fruit co-existed in one man's body, the body of the pirate regarded as the strongest of them all. The Pirate King could not defeat him in combat; islands and their societies could not withstand his wrath. The world is his weapon as much as his naginata. This unmatched danger culminated in a bounty worth half a kingdom, annulled upon his world-changing demise.
It was this power that allowed Whitebeard to be free. It was this power that allowed Whitebeard to have a family. And it was his wise love for his family, their freedom, that allowed him to keep his strength.
This is the legend of the World's Strongest Pirate. His name:

2023.03.29 06:09 Enough-Process-2373 my story

i'm 18 years old and i've been on testosterone for the past six months -- ever since i started university. i have struggled with gender roles my entire life, never feeling like i fit in with the other girls and preferring more "masculine" pursuits. i didn't really fit in with the boys either, but when i started puberty early, getting my period at 9, i started to feel even more alienated from my female peers. no one else was developing at the same rate as me, and as an extremely anxious young person with preexisting feelings of being an outsider, it was traumatic. i spent a lot of time online because i didn't have many friends and didn't know how to connect with people, and eventually i stumbled upon the trans community. i started identifying as a trans boy at 11. i cut my hair and went by a different name online, but i never told anyone in real life because i was so ashamed of myself.
two years later, after being bullied by my fellow middle schoolers for looking "like a lesbian", i started trying my hardest to fit in. i became a cis girl. i grew out my hair, wore revealing clothes, etc. that worked for a few years, but i still didn't feel like i fit in. it felt like there was something fundamentally wrong with me that stopped other girls from wanting to be friends with me and the boys from wanting to date me. i guess it was probably me being ND (though i have issues with that label), but when i was 16 and it was mid-pandemic i got really into stan twitter. i don't know if anyone else has experience with that side of twitter, but it was so normal to be trans on there that i started feeling like maybe my earlier phase had more meaning to it. after a lot of deliberation i socially transitioned, and by 17 i was on testosterone.
the six months i spent on testosterone have been probably some of the worst months of my life. i don't attribute this entirely to the hormones or to my trans identity. conveniently (not), i had just broken up with my girlfriend and lost my whole friend group before i was set to start hormones, so i didn't have a support system at all. i'm not close with my family and my identity caused an even bigger rift between us. i spent the first few months of university pretty much alone, constantly being misgendered because obviously i didn't look or sound like a man. being misgendered and knowing that people weren't seeing me as a man, even though i was trying so hard to be one, felt so awful that i just stopped leaving my room. i was so embarrassed of the way i looked and how obviously trans i was. i didn't go to any of my classes for two months and i barely interacted with any people. thankfully, i managed to clutch it out at the end and finish with straight Bs, but i was severely depressed to the point that i genuinely wanted to kill myself.
during the second semester i've been feeling a little bit better and have made a few friends, but the shame and self-consciousness stuck. i still find myself skipping class and spending entire days or weeks in my room. whenever i walk across campus i feel like (whether this is true or just in my head i don't know) everyone is looking at me as if i'm a zoo exhibit. my friends all call me my chosen name and use he/him pronouns, but it feels like they're just humouring me, like i'm a kid playing dress-up. when they refer to me as a man it sounds like a joke.
the hormones have deepened my voice and redistributed my body fat, but i know that they will never get me the results i was looking for when i started. i will always be 5'2 and have wide hips and a delicate, feminine face, no matter what i do. i will never be a "normal" man. i thought i was okay with this, with being so different, but i still haven't gotten over that fear. the fantasy i had of becoming "just another one of the guys" is only a fantasy.
i'm 99% sure i want to detransition. i'm going to stop taking testosterone and see how it goes. i think it would be futile to keep trying to become someone i'm never going to be, especially since it's causing me so much pain in the process. not to mention that my desire to be a man is definitely rooted in my bad experiences as a kid and internalized misogyny.
the reason i'm not 100% is because i still hate gender roles as much as i did when i was younger. i hate being boxed in and i hate the way people treat women. even though i don't pass as a man right now, at least i'm not expected to act like a woman. i guess that's just something i'll have to learn to live with. sorry for the length of the post, i had a lot to say and this is just the beginning of it!

2023.03.29 05:21 Ok-Zone-4976 How to come out

I recently discovered I was Trans (most probably FTM) after years of denying it internally. I’m someone that presents in a somewhat feminine way but in my mind it was always as like, guys present femininely. I live wearing dresses and skirts (I don’t like long hair though). I’ve been wondering how I could come out to my parents. They are divorced and I spend a week at each’s houses. They know that I’m queer and currently I’m dating a guy (so in a straight passing relationship with a cis bisexual guy). The thing is, I’m scared they’ll say that it isn’t true and that I’m just doing it cause it’s cool these days etc. My dad’s current girlfriend has kids and one of them came out as either a trans guy or transmasc (idk much about their situation since I haven’t met them yet, and to be safe I’ll use they/them for them), but what my dad’s girlfriend has been saying is that they were very feminine in the past and the change felt like night and day. Idk I just feel stuck and mentally it’s been exhausting thinking about this all the time. (Also my parents aren’t transphobic, they just aren’t as informed, they are very open minded and I’m grateful for that, I just have difficulty with confrontation and expressing myself).
If you have any questions to help clarify feel free to ask. (Also I think it would be important to state that I am in Québec, Canada and that I’m 16)

2023.03.29 04:09 NotPraisedNotABother Hope is a Heart-Killer

This story contains existential material some readers may find distressing. Please be advised.

Nine o'clock on the dot on a Sunday morning, James Newton put on his suit and tie—tweed and checkered yellow, the ones he wore to his parents' funeral—and spent fifteen minutes in front of the mirror psyching himself up. "Come on, James," he urged his reflection. "A miracle, that's what you need. Gimme a miracle, somethin' that'll make this whole thing go away!"
He told himself that, and he got excited for the good news he would surely receive, and he got ready to go out the door. Three times he did this, and right as his hand touched the knob, he suddenly found he had to go back for another go at it.
Eventually, though, there was only so much psyching up he could muster. He finally left his apartment, walked down many flights of stairs, and got on his way walking down the street to his appointment.
It was a beautiful day. The sky was clear of any clouds or smog, a rare thing indeed, and the sun was merrily shining. Birds chirped, though their song was somewhat obscured by the roar of passing aeromobiles as they zipped by in the skyways. Below, where roads were needed no longer, the people were out and about on the promenade in their Sunday best, going about their business and having a grand old time.
James fit right in, a smile plastered on his face and a nod for everyone he passed. He swung his arms easily and let his gait fall into a comfortable strut, and no one would suspect a thing was wrong; no sir, no one at all.
James' path took him right into the heart of the city, where buildings rose to two and even three stories tall, brick-built all of them, with a marble state building here and a library there, and the sky was filled with aeromobiles. Trees grew in their little holes in the center of the promenades, and small gardens and parks littered the places where parking lots used to be. A flock of pigeons pecked at the ground around the garbage bin for people's leftovers. James scattered some crumbs from his pocket that he'd prepared just for them. "Good will to all the world!" he said heartily to the flying rats. "Good will, or who knows what might happen? Ha ha!"
His destination was a private practice in the middle of a lot park, fenced in with a tree in each corner, ferns and vines imported from somewhere stretching from leafy branch to leafy branch. The building itself was brick, of course (God's chosen building material, that), and space enough for only one corridor and three rooms—a waiting room, the good doctor's office, and the operating room. Humility was all anyone needed these days, and by God the owner of this establishment was practically drowning in it.
James pushed through the glass door into the waiting room with gusto. "Morning, Caroline!" he greeted the secretary by her desk. "I'm here for my appointment!"
She smiled up at him. Caroline was a sweetheart to be sure. "Hello Mister Newton," she told him. "The doctor's in if you want to get to it. You know he doesn't have anyone else to see."
"That I do, miss, that I do." James unbuttoned his suit and went to hang it on the coatrack in the corner. "Don't mind if I leave my jacket here, do you, Miss Caroline?"
"Please do!"
"Thaaank you kindly." James cleared his throat. "I'll just be on my way back then!" He stepped back into the corridor and strode to the good doctor's office with a whistlin' tune and readjusting his tie. Good thoughts, James, he reminded himself. Good thoughts and good will only, and you're sure to get good news in return!

"I'm terribly sorry, Mister Newton." The good doctor's voice was tinny and cool as his steel exterior. "Your diagnosis has not changed. I predict you have six months to live, possibly less."
James couldn't look at him. He couldn't look anywhere 'cept the linoleum beneath his best brown dress shoes. The ones he wore to his parents' funeral.
He didn't know if he could speak. He tried anyway. "I thought—" He swallowed the frog in his throat. "I thought I was gettin' better."
The good doctor leaned forward across his desk, his metal hands folded in front of him. "Mister Newton, I'm sorry if I gave you the impression that your chances were good, even probable. The truth is that very few people with your diagnosis live long after symptoms begin to appear, and you are well on your way to showing symptoms. I believe you were told—"
"I remember," James said hoarsely. He chanced a look at the wall to his left, then had to look away again. It had a poster of a cat hanging to a branch that said, Hang in there! in a speech bubble. It didn't make him feel better.
He tried looking at the good doctor instead. That was a mistake as well; James couldn't help it, and he knew it weren't fair, but something about the doctor's unmoving expression and cold lamplit eyes gave him the chills something awful.
He looked back down at his shoes. "What can I— what can I expect?" His voice wobbled. "Is it gonna hurt? When the symptoms start showing up?"
"Oh, I imagine so," the good doctor replied. He stood and went to pull a projector screen from its holster in the ceiling, as wide as man's wingspan. The doctor touched something at the top, and graphs and timelines filled the screen. It was one of those special screens; the ones that didn't need light shining on them to show pictures.
"See here," the doctor said, pointing to one of the graphs. "Around this time, about a week from now I'd say if my projections hold, your throat will begin to constrict and lose some of its elasticity, making it harder to breath and swallow food and drink. It will only take a week more before you're completely unable to do either. I suggest seeking hospice before then, the medical professionals should be more than capable of providing equipment that can ease the burden on your body to perform these functions. During this time, however, you'll have these symptoms to start looking out for as well…"
The good doctor's voice blurred and became background noise. James clenched his hands tighter and tighter together between his knees as the robot droned on and on about the terrible, painful things he would endure before he finally died.
Good things, James, he thought to himself desperately. Good will and good news will come to you eventually. Good will and good news will…
But the good doctor just kept droning on.

The drink plunked down on the bar before him. "There you are, chum, your fifth Molly's Got It All of the night! You sure are looking to forget something fierce, aren't ya?"
James pushed up his head and looked at the robot serving drinks at an awkward angle. The bartender's voice was just as unnatural as the good doctor's; only, where the doctor was cool and neutral even with a scalpel in hand and a terminal diagnosis in his processor, the bartender was painfully, infinitely cheerful.
He took his drink and swallowed half of it. "Thanks barkeep," James slurred. "Y' really know how to take care of a guy." He sluggishly raised his glass in celebration, but the bartender had already moved on to the next customer, that tinny, unnatural cheer stabbing James' ears.
He shook his head and scoffed into his glass before he took another drink. Good news and good news and good news.
"Bartender's right," a voice to his left said. A human voice, teasing. "You really are lookin' to forget."
James listed that way and looked at the person up and down. The lady was dressed in oversized overalls, big black construction boots and a button-up beneath it all, flatcap pushing her unruly curls into submission. Construction worker chic. She had a smile on her face just shy of a smirk.
James looked for a moment more before grunting and turning back to his drink. "I got my diagnosis back today," he said, not caring who heard. "I'm on my way south."
"Aw, shoot," the woman said sympathetically. "Well that's too bad, I'm sorry to hear it."
"Yeah." James polished off the last half of his drink and raised his hand to get the bartender's attention. "Same thing that killed my daddy." And my mama, he added in his head, but she din't have the same disease. Naw, it was his daddy dying from it that killed her. She couldn't live without him.
"Nothing the doc can do?" the woman asked gently as the bartender came over.
"Naw." James ordered another Molly's Got It All. Dangerous, he knew, but he was already going to die, so he might as well splurge. No one to take care of at home, no one to take care of him, so he din't have to care.
"You be sure to drink some water now, friend," the barkeep said even as he made a new drink and set it before James. "You're deep in your cups now."
"Yeah, yeah." James waved the bartender away and sipped from his sixth Molly before realizing the woman was still looking at him. "What?" The question came out ruder than he meant.
Her eyes sparkled in the low-key bar light. "I find you interesting." Her smirk stretched into a smile of the same kind.
James flushed. He liked her attention, but… "Sorry," he said, looking into his cup. "I don't think you want to get mixed up with me. Dying and all."
"Oh, who said anything about anything?" the woman dismissed. She scooted her stool closer to James' and leaned her chin on her hands, looking at him with that smile of hers. "Annabelle," she introduced herself, "if you'd like to know. And if you'd want to return the favor…" she trailed off expectantly.
James flushed deeper and found himself smiling back. "Jem—" He cleared his throat and tried to focus his drunken brain. "I'm James." He thrust his hand towards her for a handshake without thinking about it and felt stupid.
Annabelle looked at his hand with raised eyebrows, then took his hand in hers and shook it. "It's very nice to meet you, Mister James," she said in a serious tone. It was the twinkle in her eyes what betrayed her. "Now why don't you tell me what's going on?"

They talked for hours after that. Well, James talked, mostly, but whenever he tried to direct a question at Annabelle she returned the prompt to him, asking a deeper, more thoughtful question than a heavily inebriated man could come up with, so of course he went along with her. They talked so late nearly everyone else had gone, but there were no closing hours courtesy of the barkeep, so there was no rush. James couldn't get anymore Mollys after a time, though, owing to the alcohol limit law programmed in the bartender's processor and all.
But he didn't care. He was enthralled with Annabelle and her thoughtful questions and her genuine interest in him. At least, she seemed genuine, but James was too drunk to tell. All he knew was that it felt nice to have someone to talk to, finally.
And he did talk a lot. He told Annabelle things he hadn't told anybody, alcohol loosening his lips. He talked about his mama and his daddy, his childhood home out in the boonies where they didn't have no aeromobiles or robot doctors, his friends growing up and the games they used to play. He talked about school, and neighbors, and hopes and dreams, and sorrows, too.
He told her about his parents' deaths. That wasn't the first or last time he'd cried that night. He told her about his daddy's affliction, the thing what put him in the grave, and the thing that would put him there too. "It was so hard, watchin' him those last few days," James said, wiping at his eyes with his sleeve. "He couldn't get out of bed, with all those tubes in him and what not, and he couldn't talk, obviously, and Mama couldn't stand it either even if she didn't say so, but the doctors said, they always said, 'It's our oath to help people, ma'am, if there's even a percent of a chance we can save them.'" He shook his head. "My mama used to say to that, she used to say," he gave a snort of amusement, "'doctors: they're gonna help you, even if it kills you.'"
Annabelle smiled at that and rubbed his back. She'd gotten real close to him over the night's conversation. So close James could feel her there even when he wasn't lookin'. It made him flush and blush and gave him the butterflies, the amount of attention she was giving him. Thoughts of his impending demise were banished by her wonderful smile.
He didn't want her to go away. He didn't want to think about death again. "Hey," he said hesitantly, wondering if his request was appropriate. "D'you think… well, do you think we could—"
Annabelle smiled wider and put a hand on his arm and gave it a squeeze. "Honey, I was thinking the exact same thing." She patted his hand. "Just let me freshen up in the ladies' room and we can get going, yeah?"
James' heart leapt into heaven. He agreed enthusiastically, and Annabelle slipped off her stool and went into the back to the ladies' restroom, leaving James by himself positively brimming with joy.
Ten minutes went by. Then fifteen. Then twenty.
James started to get anxious. He wanted to go and check on her, but, well, was that too much? The bartender asked him if he wanted to pay his bill, but James distractedly said he'd pay while he was heading out with Annabelle.
Thirty minutes passed. Forty.
"Y'know," he said aloud, mostly to himself as he got up from his seat, "I think I will check on her, y'know, in case something happened to her." He wouldn't go in, obviously, but he could always knock, right? So James went to the back of the bar and knocked on the door to the ladies' room. "Annabelle? You okay in there?"
There was no answer.
James' fear peaked. "Barkeep," he called, "can you check the ladies' room with your sensors? I think my friend might be hurt."
The metal man behind the bar looked up from the glass he was polishing. "I'm sorry, mate, I didn't want to say anything according to how much I saw you enjoying her company, but I'm pretty sure your lady friend up and booked it from my establishment almost an hour ago. My scanners are only picking up one body signature, and that's yours." Analytical words, all spoken with the stupid cheer of an empty-headed tin man.
Fear became disappointment. "You sure?" James asked, hoping against hope.
"Scanners don't lie!" the bartender replied.
Peachy. Just excellent. Good news and good news, James thought bitterly. Crestfallen, he slumped back to the bar and sighed, "Guess I'll pay my bill, then."
"Right-o!" The bartender whipped over to the cash register and waited for James to sullenly follow him there.
He reached into his suit pocket. Then his other one.
Where was his wallet?
"Something the matter?" the bartender pipped.
James couldn't handle the robot's overly happy voice right now. "Yes, just—give me a moment," he nearly growled, reaching inside his suit jacket to the pocket there.
Nothing. He patted his pants and the back of his pants. Nothing. James crouched low to look at the ground beneath his stool and nothing. "I—" He didn't know what to say. He'd had his wallet walking in. Had to; needed his worker card to get served. Where could it have—
By now the alcohol had worn off enough that James could mostly use his brain. He put two and two together and realized what had happened. "I'm sorry, but I think my wallet was stolen," he told the bartender, stricken. He hadn't noticed; but of course he hadn't noticed. He'd been drunk. Very drunk. And Annabelle had known that, if that was even her real name.
"Well, I'm sorry to hear that!" Again, the unnatural cheer, especially considering his next words. "And I'm sorry to say that if you can't pay, I'll have to be calling the sheriffs!"
"What?" James stared at the bartender. "I can't just open a tab and pay it off later?"
"Sorry, no can do!" The robot was already moving towards the rotary phone on his side of the bar. "My processor isn't powerful enough to retain information longer or more complicated than my regulars' names and the laws I was programmed with, and I'm afraid I wasn't programmed to read or write! If you want to blame anyone, blame the Howie Blayton Manufacturing Company!"
Good news and good news and good news. James felt a horrible sinking feeling in his stomach. Stranded in the local detainment center while his body collapsed in on itself? No way!
"Hey there officer!" the bartender said brightly into the transmitter. "I'd like to report a miscreant here at—hey, where are you going?"
The door was already closing behind James as he fled into the night.

He ran until he was sweating through his nice tweed suit and breathing so heavy he wheezed. He hadn't made it as far as he would have just weeks ago. It felt like his throat was caving in.
James looked around. He was standing on a little bridge that spanned a creek to a forest path, an overgrown jungle of a place. The grass was so long it hung from the lip of the creek bed to the still water below.
He was still in the heart of the city, but the roar of aeromobile traffic was far away. He must be at the edge of one of the city's massive replanting projects.
He sat down heavily on the bridge, letting his legs dangle. Good news, his mama always said. Good thoughts and good will, and good news will come to you. She said that while daddy was sick in bed and she sat by his side. She never left his side, really. James had had to work double shift at his delivery job just to keep things afloat, there.
And now he was soon to be right where his daddy was, and no one like his mama would be there for him.
James thought he had cried all he could cry that night, but tears began to form in his eyes and spill down his cheeks nonetheless. He put his face in his hands and let the sobs wrack his aching throat once again.
As he cried, a secret memory unearthed itself in James' mind. It was a memory from long ago, back when his daddy was dying, on one of the rare moments his mama left to go to her job and take care of things on her own instead of relying on James. James, like his mama, barely left his daddy's side when he could manage it.
And on that day, while his mama was far away, James watched as his daddy suddenly began to thrash and writhe, flinging the tubes in his mouth and his stomach and his private parts every which way, his eyes rolled back in his head. Little ten-year-old James didn't know whether his daddy was awake or half-comatose, but he knew he was scared, and he couldn't be scared. Scared weren't a good thought, and James needed to think good thoughts.
So he tried to calm his daddy by telling him how brave he was, how everything was gonna be alright and mama would be home any minute—but his father couldn't hear him.
"Shauna!" his daddy shouted, voice obscured by the tube jammed down his throat. "James! I can't see, Goddammit—Shauna! Shauna, where are you?!"
James was terrified. He reached to grab his daddy's hand before remembering that he couldn't touch him 'cause it would hurt him. "Daddy," James cried. "Daddy, it's alright, I'm here!"
"Shauna! Shauna!" Tears were rolling down Daddy's cheeks, his unseeing eyes staring terrified at the ceiling. "Shauna!" he sobbed. "Shauna, I'm scared! I'm scared!"
"No!" James shouted over his daddy. "No, you can't say that, daddy, good thoughts! Only good thoughts, you gotta—"
His father's thrashing grew more violent as he continued to be unable to hear his son. One of the tubes lashed James across the face, and he fell to the ground screaming. On the floor, James could only see the writhing blankets and the occasional flash of a hand, all while his daddy sobbed and screamed like a child having a nightmare he couldn't wake up from.
Mama came home to find James sobbing on the floor and her husband dead under the covers.
A secret memory, and a secret fear. James remembered the terror on his daddy's face as he died. He remembered his father's blindness, his father's deafness, all caused by his disease. He remembered his father, unable to be touched, machines surrounding him, nothing anyone could do for him.
James remembered his daddy crying for his wife, unable to tell that his son was right next to him. Even with someone there, his daddy had died alone.
Alone. And there was nothing anyone could do.
James clutched at his hair and breathed through gritted teeth. He didn't want to die alone. He moaned in fear, his teeth chattered, he rocked himself back and forth on the edge of that little bridge. He didn't want to die alone.
But he would. Even if he wasn't, he would die alone, and all the good intentions and good thoughts in the world wouldn't save him. Everyone dies alone. No one can share in your last moments, even if they're right next to you. No one will know, even if they care so much for you they'd die without you. You're trapped in your head until the bitterest end.
James wailed and beat at his legs with his fists and screamed at the unfairness. He didn't want to die alone!
"I don't want to die alone!" he shouted into the night. The night did not respond.
He continued to sob and scream and wail, all alone.

2023.03.29 03:34 vinit__singh How can I be placed in a product-based company when I am currently working in a service-based company?

How can I be placed in a product-based company when I am currently working in a service-based company?
It's normal to get irritated with your service-based job if you work as a software developer and are burdened with a lot of inflexible work, little to no work-life balance, and a minimal salary. Let's be clear: nobody wants to be trapped in a routine service industry where there are no longer any exhilarating experiences to be had.
Because of their ability to be called upon when needed, software engineers succeed in all kinds of businesses. Nevertheless, if you as a software engineer can have additional perks like fantastic bonuses in addition to a sizable salary, flexible work hours, and many other things, it can increase your motivation to work 10x as much. Would you not begin to enjoy your work as well?

Product Services
Well, product-based organizations offer all of these things. While finding a position that exactly fits your job profile is important, it's equally critical to take note of how your workplace environment impacts you when considering a change in employers.
How to switch from a service-based company to a product-based company?
Every employee of a service-based business wonders how challenging it could be to transition to a product-based business. It could be more difficult to join a product-based business than a service-based one. Service-based organizations frequently go through interview rounds that include aptitude tests, coding exams, and technical and HR rounds when hiring people.
Product-based firms frequently go through interview rounds that include technical and behavioral questions as well as online coding evaluations. These rounds are more challenging to pass than the coding and interview stages for service-based organizations. The ability to solve problems is more important to them. Yet, if you are persistent in your efforts, converting to a product-based business is not a difficult task to do.
Moving from a service-based company to a product-based company can be challenging, but here are some tips that can help:
Build relevant skills: Product-based companies look for candidates who possess skills that are relevant to the job they are hiring for. If your current job doesn't allow you to build the skills you need, look for opportunities outside of work, such as online courses, boot camps, or side projects.
Develop a strong portfolio: A portfolio that showcases your skills and experience can make you stand out from the competition. Create a portfolio website or use platforms like GitHub, Behance, or Dribbble to showcase your work.

Portfolio
Look for internal opportunities: If your current company has a product division, look for internal opportunities to work on product-related projects. This can help you gain relevant experience and demonstrate your interest in product development.
Network with people in product-based companies: Reach out to people who work in product-based companies and ask for advice on how to transition. Attend industry events, join online communities, and connect with people who work in the industry. You can also reach out to people on LinkedIn or other social media platforms.
Apply for entry-level positions or internships: If you are having trouble finding a job in a product-based company, consider applying for entry-level positions or internships. This can provide you with valuable experience and help you build a network in the industry.
Tailor your resume and cover letter: When applying for a job in a product-based company, tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your relevant skills and experience. Research the company and their products to understand their culture, values, and goals and demonstrate your interest in their products.
Prepare for interviews: Product-based companies often have a different hiring process than service-based companies. Prepare for interviews by researching the company and their products, practicing your technical skills, and demonstrating your passion for product development.
How To Prepare For Product-based Companies?
Concentrate on learning coding languages that will improve your coding abilities. Start your education with Java or C++. Make sure you are completely conversant with these languages and are able to answer questions quickly and accurately. Discover the fundamentals of binary trees, stacks, queues, linked lists, hash maps, searching, sorting, and two pointers as well as other data structures and algorithms.

Types of DSA
TStudy Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), which is utilized by practically all businesses that are product-based. It is additionally put to the test during the machine coding and low-level design phases. An understanding of OOP ideas and some practical experience can make project preparation easier.
Make sure you are familiar with the fundamentals of DSA. A crucial subject in Data Structures and Algorithms is DSA Foundations. You want to get proficient at figuring out a solution's time and spatial complexity. This stage is frequently skipped, which makes optimizing their solutions difficult. Data Structure and Algorithms by
Logicmojo - Live course is the ideal course for you to build your foundation if you're a working professional who wants to learn DSA from the start in order to ace interviews in product-based companies. Other institutes like educative and Prepinsta are good as well. You can only become proficient in this field by practise, therefore devote as much time as possible to mastering DSA questions. For practice you can use websites like Leetcode, HackerRank, CodeChef etc.
Additional Tips
Product-based organizations are very difficult to acquire interview requests from, and applying through job portals may feel like stepping into a black hole. Thus it would be wise to start networking, find any long-lost friends, and ask them for recommendations. Start stalking people on LinkedIn instead of Facebook. Find recruiters' profiles by searching.
Keep trying to transition into a development project if you're currently working on a support project for your company. And begin working on some incredible side projects that might help you be hired by your ideal project-based business.
Time management is difficult when working for service-based businesses because these businesses typically have a fixed-time schedule. But you will need to set aside enough time for planning if you wish to work for product-based businesses. Keep your company nearby and make good use of most of your weekends. Watching movies or reading technical blogs during such a period if there is no job to be done would help you save a lot of time.
Surround yourself with people who share your objectives. It could assist you in maintaining consistency and aid in interview preparation.
Thanks for reading so far and all the best.

2023.03.29 03:26 Green_Magazine712 Everett, WA Summer Intern (Supply Chain, Commercial)

Hello everyone, I recently received an offer to join Boeing as a Supply Chain intern. I wanted to know about people's experiences interning at Boeing, any insights help.
Also, I wanted to know, what would be a good place to live around the office? Unfortunately I have no driver's license, so I would like to know if the public transportation around Everett is good. I checked Google and it seems as though the 3 Route passes close enough to the 40-88 building, which is where I would be working. I am particularly worried about grocery shopping without reliable transportation -- do grocery delivery services operate in Everett? For reference, I live in Downtown Los Angeles so I am used to walking and taking the bus around the city. I was really hoping to get an opportunity in El Segundo, here in CA, as I have never been to Washington.
Furthermore, do you have any tips on finding short-term housing which is not ridiculously expensive, as in $3000/month?
Lastly, if you have supply chain experience, or any relevant experience, what would you recommend studying/preparing for prior to the internship?
Thnx!

Speaker of Parliament meets Bundestag President in Germany, calls for sanctions against Azerbaijan

Speaker Simonyan said that Armenia attaches great importance to the implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and appreciates Germany’s support in this matter.
Speaking about the post-war situation and the need for urgent solutions to regional security issues, Speaker Simonyan said that the no less destructive developments happening in South Caucasus – around Armenia and the Armenian-populated Nagorno Karabakh – are overlooked by many.
At the request of Bas, Simonyan presented details on the crisis in Lachin Corridor, the danger facing the blockaded 120,000 Armenians of Artsakh and the multi-layered humanitarian problems.
Simonyan warned that Azerbaijan is seeking to forcefully displace the Armenian population before the eyes of the whole world by continuing its policy of ethnic cleansing and creating unbearable living conditions.
The Speaker of Parliament reminded that the United Nations’ highest court – the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – issued a binding ruling on February 22, ordering Azerbaijan to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.
“We expect our German colleagues to take practical steps to ensure the immediate implementation of the court’s decision by Azerbaijan through the application of sanctions against Azerbaijan,” Simonyan said.

Azerbaijani troops breached line of contact and advance into Nagorno Karabakh

In violation of the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement, the Azerbaijani forces breached the line of contact in the Shushi-Lisagor section on March 25 and secured some “positional advance”, the official Information Center of Nagorno Karabakh reported.
The Nagorno Karabakh authorities immediately notified the Russian peacekeepers on this yet another violation by Azerbaijan.
“The authorities expect the peacekeeping contingent to take practical steps for eliminating the consequences of this violation and preventing new violations,” the Information Center said in a statement.
“Azerbaijan’s false claim on the alleged use of the Stepanakert-Ghaybalishen-Lisagor mountain road for arms shipments is simply a pretext for their own renewed aggressive and destructive actions. They ambushed and killed three on-duty police officers and injured another on March 5 under this same pretext. The government of Artsakh has numerously said that in conditions of the ongoing blockade since December 12, the given mountain road is used for civilian, urgent connection between Stepanakert and four communities in Shushi region, which is carried out with [high-clearance] large vehicles, given the highly complex and hazardous terrain.
And the existence and normal functioning of the Defense Army doesn’t pose any danger for anyone, because it is envisaged exclusively for self-defense, taking into account the real and direct dangers and threats against the physical existence and safety of the people of Artsakh,” it added.

On March 27, at around 9:00 am, units of the Azerbaijani armed forces tried to advance towards one of the heights adjacent to the Stepanakert-Lisagor road, Artsakh’s Defense Ministry informs.
The attempted advancement of the was prevented thanks to the actions of the soldiers of the Artsakh army on combat duty,
The incident was reported to the command of the peacekeeping troops of the Russian Federation.

Nagorno Karabakh reacts to Azerbaijani meeting offer

Below is the full statement issued by the foreign ministry of Nagorno Karabakh.
In connection with another proposal made by the Azerbaijani President's Office to hold a meeting between representatives of Azerbaijan and Artsakh in Baku in early April, we consider it necessary to reiterate the principled position of the authorities of the Republic of Artsakh regarding possible discussions with Azerbaijan, their modalities and objectives. The Republic of Artsakh has always advocated and continues to advocate for dialogue and a peaceful, negotiated solution to all existing problems. We have never refused contacts with the Azerbaijani side, which is evidenced by the meetings held between the representatives of Artsakh and Azerbaijan with the mediation of the command of the Russian peacekeeping forces deployed in Artsakh. The conditions proposed by the Azerbaijani side regarding the place and agenda of the meeting, as well as the context in which the proposal was made, indicate that the goal of the Azerbaijani authorities is not to have genuine discussion on existing problems, but to disrupt a possible dialogue or to impose their own political agenda through coercion, blockade, creating unbearable living conditions and the use of military force. In this regard, we consider it necessary to recall that three days ago, on 26 March, the Azerbaijani armed forces, in flagrant violation of the trilateral ceasefire statement of 9 November 2020, crossed the line of contact and moved further into the territory of the Republic of Artsakh, in the direction of the unpaved road Stepanakert-Lisagor. Moreover, on 27 March, the Azerbaijani armed forces made another attempt to take control of the mentioned road, which is the only possibility of emergency communication between the communities of Shushi region and other settlements of the republic under the conditions of blockade. We reaffirm our readiness, in line with the established practice of previous meetings, to meet with the representatives of Azerbaijan with the mediation and at the deployment site of the command of the Russian Peacekeeping Contingent in Artsakh to discuss issues of ensuring the normal life activity of the people of Artsakh and the proper implementation by the parties of their obligations, in particular, those related to the unimpeded functioning of the Lachin Corridor. In this context, we consider the reopening of the only road connecting Artsakh to Armenia through the Lachin Corridor and addressing the humanitarian, infrastructural and other urgent issues caused by the blockade to be a priority The authorities of Artsakh are also open to discussing other issues, which would not be aimed at imposing ready-made solutions on the part of Azerbaijan, but the search of mutually acceptable solutions to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation of tension. We emphasize once again that the continued blocking of the Lachin Corridor and aggravation of the humanitarian crisis in Artsakh are unacceptable and in no way contribute to creating an environment conducive to dialogue. We are convinced that only proper implementation by Azerbaijan of its international obligations, both under the Trilateral Statement of 9 November 2020 and the order of the International Court of Justice of 22 February 2023, may testify to Azerbaijan's willingness and interest to address issues through dialogue and negotiations without resorting to coercion and the use of force. We reiterate the inadmissibility of politicisation of dialogue on technical and humanitarian issues and emphasise that the political issues of the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict settlement must be discussed in an agreed and internationally established negotiation format, based on the equal rights of the parties and the existence of solid international guarantees for the implementation by the parties of their obligations.”

Armenia’s Constitutional Court greenlights ratification of Rome Statute

The High Court ruled today that the Stature corresponds to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.
The decision paves the way for Armenia to join the International Criminal Court.
Although Armenia signed the Rome Statute in 1999, in 2004, the Armenian Constitutional Court ruled that the Statute was partially incompatible with the Armenian constitution and could not be ratified.
The ICC is the world’s first permanent international court to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Central to the Court’s mandate is the principle of complementarity, which holds that the Court will only intervene if national legal systems are unwilling or unable to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The Armenian Government greenlighted the ratification of the Statue at a sitting of December 29, 2022.

Ghazaryan is a vocal critic of the incumbent government.
The ruling Civil Contract faction earlier announced that its candidate for the position is Anahit Manasyan, the Deputy Prosecutor General of Armenia. Manasyan hasn’t been officially nominated yet.
Candidates must pass a confirmation vote in parliament to be installed as Ombudsman.

Armenian patriarchate calls on Israeli authorities to take serious measures following attack on St. Mary's Church

Below is the full communiqué released by the chancellery.
“The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem strongly condemns the attack on the St. Mary’s Church of Gethsemane, which according to the Status Quo of the Holy Places is under the joint control of the Armenian and Greek Orthodox Churches.
Though it was the first attack on St. Mary since the beginning of this year, the Christian Holy Shrines have been in constant state of both physical and emotional duress by rogue attackers. Had these previous attacks on the Christian Holy Places been swiftly condemned by the local authorities leading to the perpetrators’ punishment to the full extent of the law, there would not be an influx of new attacks on the churches and monasteries of these Christian communities.
Religious intolerance and hate crimes in all their forms and perpetrations will never allow the conditions of peaceful co-existence to manifest. In fact, their presence – especially when gone unchecked by prevailing authorities – will encourage other hateful crimes and intolerances to take place. These actions and their lack of condemnation lead to unsafe conditions for these communities and establishes a lack of trust between worshipers, tourists, and residents with the local authorities.
Therefore, we call upon the Israeli Government and the Police to take serious measures to prevent such attacks and to protect both the Christian Holy sites and their daily worshipers from further vandalism and suchlike attacks.”

Nagorno Karabakh arrests two Stepanakert residents on suspicion of espionage

Authorities said the suspects conveyed information on Nagorno Karabakh’s economy, the security of citizens, the social programs in response to the blockade, the changes happening in the composition of the government, the presidential orders and other information relating to the population - actions that constitute “high treason.”
The law enforcement agency did not mention how the suspects gained access to top secret information.
Both suspects are charged with high treason and are being held in custody.

As a result of the Lernakert excavations, burials attributed to the phase of transition from the middle bronze to the late bronze were discovered.

Burials attributed to the phase of transition from the Middle Bronze to the Late Bronze Age (2nd half of the 16th century - 1st half of the 15th century BC) were opened, in which both the Middle Bronze Age Red Berd and the Late Bronze Age objects were found. These tombs of the transitional phase (Middle Bronze to Late Bronze) have a retaining wall-cromlech with a diameter of 5-15 meters. The cells are underground, oriented north-south. In the burials attributed to different phases of the Late Bronze Age, the remains were placed in the ways of burial and reburial. Accompanying possessions in these tombs are shells, rarely beads. The tombs belonging to the early Iron Age have retaining wall-cromlechs (8-20 m square), low mounds made of small stones and east-west facing slab cells. Group burials were documented in the Lower Iron Age tombs. It was discovered
On the eastern slope of the hill of the Iron Age fortress Vari Berd, a "wheel-shaped" structure consisting of other adjacent circular structures was confirmed by aerial photography. "Wheel" structures are famous in Armenia in the foothills of Aragats, where they are found in the context of monuments called "desert kites". Remains of the "Spinal" structure were also documented in the highest ancient site of Aragats Mountain, Karmir Sar, where excavations revealed a collection of dragon stone carvings in their original environment. The example of Lernakert is special in that it is documented for the first time in the context of the castle. However, the latter's function is not yet clear.
The Lernakert excavations are important in terms of the study of the Early Bronze Age society. In particular, the research of the ancient DNA of Lernakert has received a wide response, which shows that the skeletons discovered in burials made at the same time, but in different tomb groups, had no family ties. It proves that different superstitions lived in the communities.
The study of the dynamics of changes in the early Bronze Age landscape of Lernakert makes it possible to follow the formation and construction processes of the defense system with the data of two fortresses in one complex. Due to the combination of data from Lernakert burial site with data from Artik, Harichi, Horom, Mastara, Talin and Lchashen, the processes of formation of complex societies in the Late Bronze Age can be outlined. Groups of privileged people, soldiers, religious servants and merchants are noted in castles and burial grounds.
Articles on the results of the excavations were published in Armenian and foreign periodicals, reported both at local and foreign scientific conferences.
The Lernakert archaeological expedition was co-financed by the Shirak Armenological Research Center of the NAS of RA, the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the NAS of RA, the State Committee of Science and the National Association for Armenological Research and Studies (NAASR) within the framework of the theme "Trends of the Bronze Age landscape transformation of the northwestern slopes of Aragats Mountain".

Dr Sophie Scamps raises Artsakh blockade in Australian Federal Parliament

Dr Scamps said, “A couple of weeks ago, I was treated to a surprise visit in my electorate office by students of the AGBU Alexander Primary School in Duffys Forest in my electorate of Mackellar. AGBU is an independent, co-educational, bilingual English and Armenian Christian school. While I’m absolutely delighted to have received a visit from these year 5 and 6 students, they came with a very serious message. The students presented me with a letter they had written, asking me to address the Australian parliament on a very important matter: the ongoing blockade of the Lachin corridor in Artsakh since 12 December 2022, as part of the ongoing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”
“The Lachin corridor is a road that connects the Republic of Artsakh to the Republic of Armenia. The letter went on to explain how the supply of food and medicine is running dangerously low as a result of the blockade, and gas supply between Armenia and Artsakh has been cut off.”
“There is a vibrant Armenian community in my electorate of Mackellar, and I’ve had many representations from those people in addition to the schoolchildren. On their behalf, I have made representations to Foreign Minister Wong’s office about this ongoing crisis and met with foreign department specialists to discuss the matter. The crisis affecting the people of Artsakh must not be forgotten or overlooked while the world is distracted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”
ANC-AU Executive Director Michael Kolokossian welcomed the advocacy efforts undertaken by the Year 5 and Year 6 students of AGBU Alexander Primary School.
“During this difficult time, every Armenian-Australian must be advocating for an end to this illegal blockade. It is heartening to see the youngest members of our community play a key role in standing up for their homeland.”
“We thank Dr Scamps for engaging with the Armenian-Australian community and bringing this issue to the floor of parliament. Her principled stance is greatly appreciated as we work to end this blockade,” added Kolokossian.

Sarsang water levels dropping at alarming rate amid blockade, Artsakh authorities say

Since January 9 Azerbaijan has been barring Nagorno Karabakh authorities from accessing and repairing the damaged power transmission line which supplies Nagorno Karabakh with electricity from Armenia.
“The only source of electricity we have now is the Sarsang Reservoir,” Ararat Khachatryan, the acting chairman of the Water Committee of Artsakh said.
“The water levels are over eight meters lower compared to the same period last year. Today the inflow is 4 cumecs, which is a very low indicator. The Tartar flow can reach up to thirty, forty or fifty cumecs. The consumption is a lot higher now. When water levels are high, less water is actually consumed for obtaining electricity, but when the water levels drop, pressure also drops and it takes more water to get the same amount of electricity,” Khachatryan explained.
“Since January 9, Azerbaijan has been impeding and barring us from carrying out repair works in the territory under its control where the high-voltage electricity transmission line supplying Artsakh from Armenia passes. Before the blockade, especially in winters, when the electricity supplied from Armenia was insufficient, we were using the Sarsang Reservoir. After the war we are left with only five small HPPs in Artsakh, which work only under 20% capacity,” Khachatryan said, warning that if the power line doesn’t get fixed soon there will be insufficient water levels in Sarsang.
Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan earlier warned that the significant decrease of water resources in Sarsang Reservoir (which had a capacity of 600,000,000 cubic meters) will lead to a serious crisis in spring and summer first of all for the Azerbaijani farmers themselves because the water resources won’t be sufficient enough for irrigating the 96,000 hectares in Azerbaijan’s Tartar, Aghdam, Bardi, Goranboy, Yevlakh and Akhjabad regions. The Artsakh authorities said that the residents of these regions should be aware that they won’t have irrigation water and will subsequently lose income and harvest thanks to their own authorities and the self-proclaimed “eco-activists”.

Japanese sakura flowers will blossom in Yerevan (for some reason)

The Japanese Embassy in Armenia on Tuesday approved the funding program for the renovation of a building where the “Khikari” Armenian-Japanese Cultural Center will function. The $120,000 grant program is called “Khikari Center Improvement Project.”
“The preparation for the project took three years, but I am confident that nice and good dreams always come true if you continue to wait and believe,” she noted.
Piliposyan also extended her thanks to all supporters, which include the Armenian MFA, Ministry of Culture, Government-Affiliated Charitable Project Coordination Commission and, of course, Japan.
The aforesaid building will be allocated for fifteen years and free of charge. The Center also will have a small Japanese style garden. Moreover, they already have promised to bring Japanese sakura (cherry blossom) flower seedlings to Armenian capital city Yerevan.
The renovation is scheduled to be completed by the year’s end.

2023.03.29 03:19 RainbowNeckHustles Flip off cancer - is this a stupid idea?

Background:
I live in a large and growing metro areas. I have been picking up free and selling random items (sporting goods, furniture, bikes, etc) for the last few months. I have some skills that allow me to refurbish furniture and fix/replace some items on bicycles. Plus, I actually like the listing, marketing, haggling, selling, ect part of the process. Everything I sell is on FBMP, OfferUp, Nextdoor, etc (all face to face, no eBay). I am averaging a net profit of roughly $1k per month. Nothing to brag about, but I enjoy it.
Separately, I work for a large Fortune 500 and my wife and I do alright financially. We could always have more money, but couldn’t we all? I dont need to flip items to make the ends meet. It is fun to me.
Lastly, my mother passed away quickly from a rare form of lung cancer. My wife is just finishing winning her battle against a gnarly form of lymphoma (blood cancer) after multiple years and a stem cell transplant during the pandemic. I have a bit of a passion for hating cancer.
Idea:
I have thought about creating a not for profit that flips items and invests the profits into cancer patient/family support programs and research. I have broken the process into 4 parts:
  1. Sourcing Inventory: I feel like one of the hardest parts of flipping for a $50+ profit on each sale is securing enough medium - high value inventory. People regularly give furniture and other medium - high value donations to places like Goodwill. Places like Goodwill pay inflated salaries to their executives (Each Goodwill is its own non-profit with its own CEO, however, several Goodwill CEOs make an average salary of around $500,000 per year.). Positioning this to a community in the right way would likely drive their valuable donations to donate to one where the team is working pro bono. I might be naive, but I think telling someone that is donating a bike that if they donate it to you then 100% of the profit from that bike sell will go to cancer patient support would sway them to donate that bike to you instead of a corporate not for profit. I think donators would be willing to drop off their donation instead of you driving door to door to pick up a piece or two at a time. This would help with efficiency.
  2. Refurbishing Inventory: I am only one person, but I know there are others out there that have the skills to refurbish furniture or fix bikes or whatever. Especially retirees. My thought is you partner with people that want to help. You give them a piece to refurbish and a timeline for completion. You provide the supplies that are needed to quickly refurbish the project and when they are ready for another project, you supply it to them.
  3. Marketing/Selling: I am handy at listing and negotiating sales so I would continue doing this. This could be expanded to others in the future if this grows to too much to handle.
  4. Delivery: I would try to provide 2-3 days a week where I bring all my purchases that are supposed to happen on that day and have customers come to a central location/parking lot for pick up. Maybe offer delivery for a fee on certain items.
To be very clear, I am not looking to make a dime off of this enterprise. I want to put roughly 15-20 hours a week into it and help as many patients/families that are going through a devastating scary time in their lives.
I want to think this through as much as possible before I pull the trigger. I also dont want to get on the wrong side of the flipping community in my area.
Provide me your brutally honest opinion? Stupid idea? Doomed to failure? Am I being overly optimistic on people being willing to donate and support an organization like this? Nothing you will say will hurt my feelings.

Edit 1: I do plan on donating the profits to established charities that have a proven track record of low internal spend (salaries) and high giving to patients/families.

2023.03.29 03:03 RainbowNeckHustles Flip Off Cancer - is this a stupid idea?

Background:
I live in a large and growing metro area.
I don't need to flip items to make the ends meet. It is fun to me.
Lastly, my mother passed away quickly from a rare form of lung cancer. My wife is just finishing winning her battle against a gnarly form of lymphoma (blood cancer) after multiple years and a stem cell transplant during the pandemic. I have a bit of a passion for despising cancer.
I want to put roughly 15-20 hours a week into it and help as many patients/families that are going through a devastatingly scary time in their lives. I do think I will have to build some credibility with my community because anyone can say, "donate all your valuable items to me and I will give the proceeds to cancer support" and then be a bastard and pocket the profits.
I want to think this idea through as much as possible before I pull the trigger. I plan on creating a business plan once I finalize the concept better. I also dont want to get on the wrong side of the flipping community in my area, but I could see there being some hard feelings.
