2023.03.29 07:36 -Tooner- Afro Latino Comp Sci major with good results. Venmo or wtvr if you guess the rest right
Demographics - Gender:Male
- Race/Ethnicity:Afro Latino(I can speak 4 languages too!)
- Residence:Ny, non competitive high school.
- Income: 25k a year
- Hooks (Recruited Athlete, URM, First-Gen, Geographic, Legacy, etc.): Afro Latino, FLI
Intended Major(s): Comp sci
Academics - GPA/Rank (or percentile):96.8 UW, 5/500 ish
- # of Honors/AP/IB/Dual Enrollment/etc.: 4 APs(world, apush, Bio, environmental)- 5s on all
- Senior Year Course Load: 3 Aps(calc, physics, and gov)- was doing pretty well in all so mid year report was solid
Standardized Testing List the highest scores earned and all scores that were reported. - SAT/ACT:1530(790 M, 740 E)-
- Extracurriculars/Activities:
- Research at prestigious hospital that’s actually sorta related to CS but not entirely . It never got published unfortunately but I think I have a pretty good abstract that I did submit to schools that allowed(except for Penn cause I’m dumb and didn’t know you can do that).
- Editor in Chief at School Newspaper
- Numerous CS Boot camps that led to some competitions I was in
- President of our schools STEM club I guess? It’s kinda a weird club basically targeting people in our school to do fun stem related activities
- Student Goverment Senator for like two years
- Did volunteer work at my local library for 4 years
- Massive family responsibilities that took a huge chuck of my life rly
- Part of the schools drama club for 4 years
- NHS
- Tutoring
I feel like I did a rly good job of describing impact and what I did in these ECs on the common app.
Essays/LORs/Interviews: Personal statement is rly a set back and was very mid. I’ll be honest after getting rejected from Cornell I decided to change it but I still don’t like it. It was pretty personal and very trauma dumpy tho… 5/10?
LOR: Calc teacher who’s cool but I honestly wasn’t one of his stand out students since I’m quiet so I doubt it was amazing also 5/10
LOR 2: Teacher who advises our journalism club! I’ve known her since freshman year so I think she wrote something great 7/10
Harvard Interview: Went decent but I don’t think she was very interested in me, she actually told me throughout our interview about other majors I could be interested or minors she’d think I could succeed at lol. We talked a lot about learning different languages and culture. She said I was “vocally adept” which I don’t rly know what that means. Things did get pretty personal when we talked about our experiences with homelessness and living in motels? lol but in general it was average 5/10
Yale: Awful. I was so nervous and worst part is that it was over the phone, could barely answer why I liked the school. Also my first interview rly like ever so I’m giving myself some grace for flopping. 0/10
Dartmouth: Super fun and successful interviewer. I had an absolutely great time and honestly shocked at how accomplished people can be. 8/10!
Got no other interviews :/
Decisions (indicate ED/EA/REA/SCEA/RD) Stony
Bing
4 Cunys (was genuinely ready to go to one like the day I got the Columbia likely omg I thought I was so delusional applying to these colleges) COLUMBIA LIKELY?????????????
JHU
Notre Dame
Waitlists: Vandy, Northwestern, Washu
Rejections: Cornell ED
NYU CAS
Pending: Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Penn, Columbia(could still get rejected with likely), Princeton, Duke. Take your guesses I’m expecting a wipeout except for Columbia lol
Comments: Very happy with these results considering I wasn’t going to bother with shotgunning out of insecurity but rly happy I changed my mind. Its honestly so crazy how I was basically good with going to one of the CUNY’s I got into and then BAM I got the likely in my inbox. So incredibly happy about it! My dream school is definitely Yale but after that interview I doubt it’s happening. I’m predicting to get washed on ivy day but hey all you need in one and I think I’m likely to get that!
As for NYU I genuinely think it’s funny that that’s the first app I wrote and I used the supp essay for any other question that talked about diversity or lived experiences including Columbias.
Kinda would be excited to go to one of these top schools for free but I’m still genuinely considering going to my local CUNY our of fear that going to a top college will mean I flop😭it was nice getting into one though like definitely an ego boost. Still I think I’d rather go to a school that has more poor people in it lol. Not sure how much worth prestige rly is if I end up being miserable but maybe I’m being to pessimistic.

2023.03.29 03:22 Ok_Regret_7592 Part-time MBA: Haas vs Stern vs Tepper($) vs Foster
Hello everyone,I have been accepted to Berkeley Haas, NYU Stern, Carnegie Mellon Tepper($) and Washington Foster part-time MBA programs. All of these programs are mostly online with some in-person components, it works perfectly fine for me since I'm working full-time and have a busy schedule. I got a little of scholarship only from Tepper but I'm more leaning towards Haas and Stern, but can't decide which one is right for me.
Background: I currently work as a technology professional at one of the Big 4 Accounting firms in New York. I have a bachelor's degree in Information Technology from one of the State schools in New York and have about 7 years of experience in the technology field.
Target role and industry: My main reason for getting into an MBA is to develop leadership and communication skills. My goal is to get into a leadership role in the future and stay in my current company/industry or get into a Big tech firm. Location wise, I would like to stay in the northeast region, mostly in the NY tri-state area, but that may change in the future.
I would love to hear your thoughts/suggestions!

2023.03.28 23:38 unsolicitedreplies waitlisted NYU
I was waitlisted at NYU (primary choice campus Abu Dhabi, then NY, then Shanghai), and I don’t know what to do. Is it worth it to stay on the waitlist list? Like, from what I’ve heard, internationals getting waitlisted is basically soft rejection.
I really had hopes since I participated in candidate weekend (even though it does not mean you’ll get in, I fucking know it was stupid).
I don’t know what to do rn. Any thoughts/advice is appreciated!

2023.03.28 12:55 Reliqush Why can I never be happy in life? Whenever something good is gonna happen it gets snatched away from me. Whenever I feel even slightly happy, bad things keep happening to me until I feel like garbage. I have no good memories in life because of this, and only disappointments and depression.
2023.03.28 05:18 Amelie3189 Intensive program performance & songwriting 🎶
Hi everyone !
this is my 1st post ever on Reddit and I hope someone is going to be able to enlighten me ☺️
I am a 33 years old professional looking to improve my skills in vocal performance, songwriting, music production and management. I already have a job and going back to uni to do a full on masters is not an option so I have been exploring intensive programs in the US but I am running in circles as it seems all programs are for teenagers.
Has anyone heard of a good intensive program in vocal performance/songwritin/music management in NY or California? The ideal length would be between 2 weeks to 2 months & the objective would be to meet people from the industry and to learn the ropes. The programs that come up on google are NYU, LA college of music, LAMISA,…but again, they all seem to be targeting teenagers/young adults so I could really use someone’s feedback on their experience.
thank you so much 🎵

2023.03.28 03:24 predenteieio Help me with my school list?
Hi everyone! I am applying to dental school this upcoming cycle and would love some advice on what schools I should add/remove from my list. I am a bit lost with the process as my pre-health advisor hasn't really given me much advice
Undergrad GPA: 3.54 (overall), 3.5 (science) (Hoping to bring this up to a 3.6+ by the end of this semester)
Major: Biology (Ivy university)
DAT: 21 AA, 21 TS, 19 PAT, no sections below 19
Residence: NY
Volunteer hours: 100
Shadowing hours: ~200 (Most are from general dentists (2), some from a pediatric dentist)
ECSs/leadership: VP of pre-dent society, writer for health mag (all throughout college), student admissions rep (2 years), president of student admissions reps, artist for publication on campus (all throughout college), after school HW helper at local elementary school
Current school list (Pls help this is actually horrible imo):
UNE (OOS)
Tufts (OOS)
BU (OOS)
USC (OOS) ??? (I forgot why I added this??)
Buffalo (IS)
NYU (IS)
Touro (IS) ** TOP CHOICE bc of location! (WAMC??)
Stony Brook (IS)
UMich (OOS)
UPenn (OOS) (I feel like this is unreasonable lol)
Any schools I should add/remove? I don't mind where I go as long as I'm on the East or West coast (I have a lot of family on both sides). Costs are a factor, but not the biggest. Please be brutally honest with me :)
(EDIT: NOT URM -- Asian)

2023.03.27 09:04 xanotherthrowaway- Extremely frustrated right now
For context, I’m from nyc at a semi-competitive school & applied for engineering as fgli.
I applied to 18 reaches (along w/ 6 safeties & 3 targets) with minimal expectations, but after getting 12 back-to-back flat-out rejections, I’m a little hurt. It would’ve been nice to get into at least one target (looking at you stony & bing) but I’ve been waitlisted /: my school sends 60+ students to both of these schools every year so I thought I could easily get in but here we are. And even then, I wouldn’t have cared as much if I didn’t have people coming up to my face to say, “you didn’t get in?? how?? you’ve done so much!”
Everyone (mentors teaching at the t20s, coaches, counselors) said my essays, grades, ecs looked great & that I would be a competitive applicant. I just don’t understand where I went wrong //: Getting waitlisted would’ve at least told me I’ve done something right, yk?? I have 7 schools coming out this week (NYU, Barnard, ivys) with 0 hope.
I know I’ll be more than fine at whatever school I end up at & I don’t regret a second of any ec I've committed to within past four years. I got to meet a lot of amazing people and genuinely learned sm. They’ve really shaped me into a better person & I’m extremely grateful, but it’s suuuuper frustrating to see no results after working so hard. While t20s aren’t everything and no one has a right to admittance at any of these schools, it would’ve been nice (‘:
I can’t talk to my parents about any of this & am dreading the day I have to tell them about committing to CUNY. I just know the first thing they’ll say is “you worked this hard only to end up at a CUNY??” & it’ll only make me feel more shitty. Like tf more was I supposed to do. They never liked the idea of me participating in anything outside of school or putting in any extra hours to study. And while that sounds great, they also discourage the idea of me going to school altogether lmaoo. I had to work really hard to get them to agree to let me stay extra hours after school for clubs and stay up late at night to get school work done. They micromanage everything and it’s sooo tiring.
This whole process is tiring. For my sanity and well being, I can’t stay here another 4 years. I wish I realized this sooner and applied to more oos schools. Because I’m not allowed to dorm or go oos, I limited myself to schools within ny & only applied to oos reaches. I stupidly thought that if I *were* to get out, it’d have to be for a good school. As the end of senior year approaches, I only feel more suffocated by my environment and have a strong urge to get out.
Man /: I’m mad at myself for not applying to more schools & for not being more vulnerable in my apps about personal difficulties. I had several breakdowns trying to brainstorm for my PS bc I wasn’t sure how to unpack, much less write about, any of the things I was/am going through. I was told to play the "POC, woman in STEM w/ difficult circumstances" card but fucked it up. And now that I am ready to write about it, it’s over. There’s no actual way to know if I got rejected bc my essay didn’t touch on my culture or background (which is unique, but again i wasn’t sure how to fully outline my situation without coming off as a red flag). Annnndd pls don’t tell me that the essay is just another factor & my application is being viewed holistically. i’m fully aware it’s most likely not just the essay /: i’m v much drowning in copium atm.
Sorry about the long, messy post & thanks for listening.
tldr; rejected from all non-safeties & taking any advice you’re willing to give (especially for transferring--t20 or not) ((‘:

New Eye Surgery Holds Promise for Correcting Nearsightedness
The SMILE eye procedure is similar to LASIK in being less invasive, says one doctor.

By Parminder Deo and Jacqueline Paulis, M.D.
Cleveland resident Tina Noel struggled with glasses and contacts for most of her life. The 44-year-old has been living a blurry and cloudy life as her aging eyes have progressively become drier due to an autoimmune condition.
“I’m very limited to what I can wear anymore,” says Noel. “I can't wear my contacts anymore because my eyes are just progressively getting drier. I feel my eyes get so tired, I can be driving and my eyes just want to shut when I'm wearing my glasses.”

Lasik Alternative Approved by the FDA
The Food and Drug Administration in September approved a new laser eye procedure known as Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, or SMILE. Noel's doctor recommended giving it a try.
The procedure employs a laser, similar to the one used in LASIK, to remove a small piece of the cornea to reshape the eye. Many people with corneal changes that excluded them from LASIK could now be eligible for this new surgical option.
Noel's ophthalmologist, Dr. Ronald Krueger of the Cleveland Clinic, said the SMILE procedure is all about being minimally invasive.
“I often say that SMILE is like a laparoscopic LASIK because it’s making a smaller incision,” Krueger told NBC News.
The new laser procedure is designed to treat nearsightedness in patients aged 22 and older. The price tag is roughly $5,000 and is not covered by insurance.
Dr. Ilyse Haberman, assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at NYU Langone Medical Center, says that, outside of the U.S., SMILE can correct astigmatism and is being further developed to fix farsightedness. But for patients in the U.S., only very specific candidates can get the SMILE procedur

I’m taking physics and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for it. I’m not sure if I should take the two sessions this summer or wait until next summer to take physics 2. 2023.03.26 03:24 Rahhfa4 ChanceMe - Lehigh, Binghamton, Syracuse
What are my chances of getting into Lehigh, Binghamton, and Syracuse
I want to major in Computer Science/Mechanical Engineering, and live in Westchester, NY.
I attend a Catholic all-boys High School.
Freshman Year: Volunteered at a college, worked on data analysis and organization. No ECs. All Honors Classes UW Average - 79 (Really tough time for me because of COVID, but is written about in two of my recommendation letters)
Sophomore Year: Volunteered at same college, worked on data organization. All honors classes, Political Club, Math Honors Society, Basketball Intramural, Team Travel Club, planned trip to Austria/Hungary, Won a gold medal and Summa Cum Laude score on National Latin Exam (highest grade in school), First Honors Award, UW Average - 97
Junior Year (current): Volunteering at same college on new data projects and at library at different college for organization of data, and did website design for free to a few local businesses. For the college, I prepped, organized, and submitted data that was being sent to academic accreditors. Honors classes and 3 APs (APUSH, AP Bio, AP English Lang), Spring Track, Math Honors Society, president of CompSci/Coding Club, and Engineering/Robotics Club. I received a 33/36 on this year's National Latin Exam, so most likely achieved the Summa Cum Laude award again. Current unweighted average - 92. Predicted ACT score for April 15th - 33-35.
This spring: I am planning on completing a couple of websites and physics simulations with friends, and will compete in STEM and Programming competitions with club members.
This summer: I’m taking a precalculus honors course at a nearby community college, taking a CompSci and Programming course at a nearby college, a job at my local camp, and spending more time independently learning coding languages. I also applied for the CS4CS program by NYU. Hopefully, I'll be able to win some programming competitions, as I'm planning on participating in a few more this summer!
Next Year (Senior): I'll be taking AP Calculus AB, AP Physics 1, AP CompSci A, AP Latin, and honors English and history. I'll also be joining Varsity Soccer, and the Science, CompSci, and Math Honors Societies. I will likely be continuing the same volunteer opportunities and ECs.

2023.03.25 01:44 samanthacourtney Neurosurgeon doesn't want to operate yet...but I kind of do. [27F]
27F, in relatively good shape, social drinker. You can see my post history for a more detailed backstory, but long story short:
I had follow up imaging done in January for a stroke I had in November (cause of the stroke unknown, but doctors are speculating the cause was RCVS, or a complication from RSV, since those are consistent with the scattered hemorrhaging I had), and the follow up imaging flagged a small aneurysm. 4mm on my "left cavernous/supraclinoid junction". In retrospect, this was visible on my earlier scans in November, but the radiologists then didn't flag it, for whatever reason.
I sought a second opinion from a university research hospital in my city, Northwestern, and had an “advanced aneurysm MRI” (increased magnetism for higher res) done 2 weeks ago. The results from this MRI revealed a second aneurysm. 3x3 mm aneurysm in the “basilar tip”. The results note that this looks like it was actually visible in the earlier imaging I had done in November at the other hospital, but the radiologists there didn’t flag it. My neurosurgeon's assistant emailed me about these results, and noted that the risk posed by this 2nd aneurysm is a bit higher than the risk posed by the 1st aneurysm (google searches seem to put the 5 year risk of rupture for aneurysm #1 at about .4%, vs. somewhere between .9% and 2.5% for aneurysm #2), but that overall, the neurosurgeon thinks it's still low risk.
My neurosurgeon brought up my case at the vascular departmental conference that was held earlier today, to get a consensus on how to proceed in my case. His assistant emailed me back a couple of hours ago with their recommendations - which apparently, is still to just "wait and see", and get another MRA done in 6 months.
Honestly, I'm not psyched about this. I don't know if the daily anxiety involved in the "wait and see" approach would work for me, and frankly, a .9% change of rupture in the next 5 years is still too high for my liking. On top of that, most information I can find online seems to indicate that having multiple aneurysms also increases your overall risk of rupture. So the true risk is likely even higher than that.
I'm not sure how to approach this though. I like my neurosurgeon, and don't want to make him feel like I'm stepping on his toes or anything, if his professional opinion is that waiting is better. And if the risk of undergoing surgery right now his higher than the risk of rupture, it probably makes sense to wait...but if the risk is more of a toss up, I'd honestly be more comfortable just intervening now and getting surgery done (which in my case, would be endovascular)
Would love to hear anyone's thoughts. Should I talk to my neurosurgeon and push for surgery? Or maybe seek out a 3rd opinion? (I'll be in New York this summer, so could maybe try to see someone at NYU Langone which I know is highly regarded for neurology) Or just suck it up and wait and monitor?

2023.03.24 00:59 RegionWonderful6684 NYU housing reservation legality
NYU requires students to send a " non-transferable/non-refundable $1,000 Housing Reservation Payment " to reserve housing. I paid this as it was due March 8th. Today, (March 23) I received an email that said "Our records indicate that you have confirmed your participation in a study away program for the Fall 2023 semester. Therefore, your NYU-NY housing application has been cancelled without penalty." But while not stated in the email, it seems that I cannot get back my $1000 deposit.
This seems really unfair because the study away decision came out way after the deposit deadline, so I had no way of knowing if I was going to be accepted. Additionally, they canceled my application without my permission. What is the legality concerning this situation? Is there any way to force them to give my "non-refundable" deposit back?
