For the past several months, 3-4 individuals have been quietly protesting outside the Broad & Christian Dunkin on Mondays through Fridays from the early morning until the mid-afternoon hours. There's no inflatable rat, just a few signs like "Do not buy here" and "Boycott Dunkin Donuts" and things like that. They're upset that recent renovations to the store were performed using some amount of non-union labor and that this "depresses wage standards in the area" etc. etc.
They're very good about not being disruptive and not standing directly on the business property itself, but they surely are foregoing income they could be earning by being at a different job site during business hours.
Just was wondering - how long is this activity likely to continue before the protesters "get bored" and choose a different location to hand out literature and protest at? I mean, the renovations at this store are completely done and it's kind of hard to "undo" them and "redo" them using union labor, and these protestors are NOT upset about construction activity at other Dunkin stores in the area as far as I know.

Devout Coffee is taking over the closed down Slap Face Coffee at the corner of Peralta Ave & Fremont Blvd. This will be their third location. This was super popular location for college students and homeless folks who live at Centerville train station. Opens in March/April 2023.
Suju’s Coffee is opening their third location at 1752 Decoto Road (next to Safeway at Union Square) This used to be a very large Starbuck. The signs have gone up already and expected to open in April 2023.
Starbuck is opening a large drive-thru+cafe at Home Depot on Automall Parkway.
Starbucks/Dunkin considering opening up a cafe at the corner of Niles Canyon and Mission Blvd in Niles according to the broker. New shops are under construction already.

I got booted in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot in Newark, NJ I left and came back to Dunkin to get a drink and sandwich after like 25 minutes (as I did not think the post office would be very happy for me to come in with a drink and sandwich), To see I had a boot on my car and a fine of $250 that I had to pay cash. There was a man there who told me I got booted and actually was on the phone with the women who booted me. I am assuming they’re working together since he did not have a car. I did not see the private property sign but now I do. As it was higher then I expected and there’s only one sign, but I was not expecting to be booted in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot.
It it legal for them to boot my car in the 25 minutes I was gone? Is it legal for them to demand a cash or a cash app payment. This is all very sketchy to me.

Speaker Out Of Turn

Kevin McCarthy clearly loves attention, but also suffers from the all-too-common ailment of not having a single solitary clue what he’s talking about.

• House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave himself a one-day head start on President Biden’s Tuesday State of the Union Address in the form of a televised speech about a “responsible debt limit.” He naturally dedicated much of this bad-faith demonstration to several favorite Republican culture war talking points (undocumented immigrants, China = scary, etc.) before he got into some baffling nonsense regarding the debt ceiling, which he and his House GOP have taken hostage in the hopes of extracting even more sweeteners for the wealthy and corporate America that they have been unable to enact by, uh, winning elections.
  
• McCarthy did some predictable, completely insincere pearl-clutching about the national debt, and made sure to neatly tie it up in a bow of It’s Never Been This Bad and It’s All Democrats’ Fault™ (that is, he lied). Infuriatingly, McCarthy cited a number of Republican-created economic inequalities, like 60 percent of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, (from the mouth of the leader of the party that blocks any attempt to raise the minimum wage! The party that loves to see American union jobs shipped overseas to maximize corporate profits!) and blamed it on inflation which he blamed entirely on Joe Biden and the Democrats (another lie).
  
• McCarthy complained about “four years of out-of-control discretionary spending” under Democratic congressional majorities, which is funny because his president was in the White House four years ago, and signed three clean debt ceiling increases, and oversaw a huge increase in discretionary spending, over the course of his single term, all of which McCarthy voted for. Speaking of disgraced former president Donald Trump, McCarthy somehow forgot to mention the $1.9 trillion tax cut for the wealthy and corporations that the GOP engineered and shoved down America’s throat in 2017, ballooning the national debt enormously and heavily contributing to the inflation we’ve seen in the past few years all while doing nothing to improve the material conditions of average Americans. (McCarthy voted for that, too.) McCarthy can wax poetic about eggs all he wants (“a staple of America’s breakfast!”) but he’s not fooling anyone into thinking he’s Tom Joad.
  

Stop me before I have a rage stroke, because I currently have a blood clot in the shape of Kevin McCarthy’s goofy-ass face.

• According to McCarthy and the GOP, the necessary allocations required to run a functional government responsible for the lives of over 330 million people is “wasteful Washington spending” or “excess” which drives inflation, but massive tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and corporations insuring that the amount of money flowing into the government is wholly insufficient to pay the debts we’ve already incurred while also saddling the lion’s share of the tax burden on the working class is “fiscal responsibility.” Gotcha.
  
• Another notable absence from McCarthy’s speech was any mention of the pandemic. You know, the factor that most impacted the global economy for the past three years? Yeah, that one. Pretty big thing to omit!. Looks like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA)’s deranged COVID-19 denialism is rubbing off on ole’ Kev. Or maybe he figures it’s just best to not mention anything that can’t be blamed on Joe Biden. McCarthy rounded out his speech by assuring his audience that cuts to Medicare and Social Security “are off the table,” and “defaulting on our debts is not an option,” cosplaying a reasonable legislator. The implicit threat there is that everything else is on the table, including essential programs like Medicaid, which his swamp buddy, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), wants to slash by adding work requirements as part of any debt ceiling negotiations. Public education? Republicans famously hate that, too, so I’m sure they’ll try to take a whack at it. The Big Bloated military? Only if they can somehow make it hurt Ukraine.
  

Luckily for him, Kevin McCarthy had low name-recognition before becoming Speaker. Now the whole country’s gonna get to know him, his inability to speak sensibly, his total unseriousness, and his fealty to the MAGA crowd. Democrats are fortunate to have him as the face of the GOP threat to wreck the economy out of spite, and if they exploit it aggressively, maybe McCarthy et al will realize being evil is a bad political strategy and walk back from the brink.

Under The Radar

Over the weekend I thought, “Damn, I’m gonna have to write about the balloon,” and here I am writing about the balloon. Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed his first official trip to China on Friday in response to the Pentagon’s discovery of a Chinese surveillance balloon flying over the continental U.S. The Defense Department shot down the balloon on Saturday off the coast of South Carolina. As they do with literally every current event, Republicans have pretended to be furious about the balloon, pretending further to believe it was evidence of President Biden’s weakness/wokeness/whatever— insisting that this would never happen with one of their guys. Well wouldn’t ya know, new reports show that at least three similar “spy” aircrafts crossed into U.S. airspace during Trump’s presidency. The balloon shot down by Biden’s DOD could help the United States better understand China’s surveillance capabilities. The Chinese government claimed that the one shot down was a weather balloon that had been blown off course, but U.S. intelligence said the wreckage refutes that claim. Additional balloons were spotted in Central and South America, prompting us to beg the global intelligence community to call these sophisticated surveillance aircrafts something, anything other than balloons, because it makes high-stakes, potentially-deadly international diplomacy sound silly as hell.

Longtime Texas GOP booster Harry Whittington (the guy who Dick Cheney shot in the face on a hunting trip in 2006) has died at the age of 95. He will be remembered for immediately publicly forgiving Cheney, who never actually apologized for the incident.

Here are all of the new US CHADeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in January 2023, according to the Department of Energy.
There were 120 new CHADeMOs added in January. To put it in perspective, there were 173 CCS chargers added in January. The gap is starting to widen, but since only Nissan makes new cars that use these, I continue to be pleasantly surprised by the number of new CHADeMOs available. 120 is still better than the 99 new chargepoints that came online in January 2022.
We all know that CHADeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf. And while you can finally join the queue for a CCS-based Nissan Ariya, it is still a "limited availability" vehicle for now.
The federal infrastructure plan requires those seeking funds to build new charging stations to build four CCS chargepoints first, but also permits CHADeMO to be funded once that threshold is met. I don't see why EVgo wouldn't continue to take advantage of that, for now, especially since baking Tesla's CHADeMO adapter into their stations is currently part of their strategy to support Tesla vehicles without the need for the Tesla driver to buy an adapter. This may become less of a factor as more Tesla owners buy the Tesla CCS adapter.

BOTTOM LINE, UP FRONT: NYC's new $12 billion commuter rail terminal is a fiasco, the product of crummy planning and a political system unwilling to oversee the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
New York City's shiny new commuter rail terminal, Grand Central Madison, is now open for business. Grand Central Madison is the culmination of a three-decade-long project to bring the Long Island Rail Road, one of New York's three commuter rail operators, to the East Side of Manhattan.
This is a good idea, but it was executed incredibly poorly. It illustrates all the ways that you can fuck up a project.
The backstory is straightforward. For over a century, NYC's commuter rail lines to the Long Island and New Jersey suburbs went to Penn Station on the West Side of Manhattan. The suburban lines from Westchester County (called Metro-North) went to Grand Central on the East Side. The two stations are about a mile apart, with no direct subway connection between the two. Penn is also in an inconvenient location, since it's at the edge of Midtown Manhattan, at 31st Street and 8th Ave. Getting to the East Side office core from Penn Station usually requires a subway transfer to the overcrowded E train. On top of this, Penn Station is the busiest transport facility in North America, and it's incredibly overcrowded. Grand Central, in contrast, is the center of Midtown, and it has a ton of extra passenger capacity.
So, there is a legitimate problem to be solved here.
It's not a new problem, either. Fifty years ago, NYC dug the 63rd Street Tunnel under the East River to bring the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Grand Central. But the city was broke in the '70s, so the tunnel was never connected to anything. Connecting the unused tunnel to the underused terminal is a no-brainer. It's about a mile from the end of the 63rd Street Tunnel to Grand Central.
The MTA did not do this.
Instead, the MTA decided to build a brand new station underneath Midtown Manhattan called Grand Central Madison, which is worse in every way. (For clarity, I'm going to call the new station GC Madison to distinguish it from the old station.)
WAIT, WHAT? WHAT'S SO BAD ABOUT THE SHINY NEW STATION?
First, the new station is incredibly inconvenient for commuters. I can't imagine a more inconvenient way to build a station in Midtown Manhattan than GC Madison.
GC Madison is built between 48th and 45th Streets, a quarter-mile north of the existing station and ten stories below it. This makes it a gigantic pain to get out of the station. I tested this out a couple days ago inside the empty station, timing it with my watch. It's five minutes, 30 seconds to get from the GC Madison platforms to the Metro-North platforms at old Grand Central. It's six minutes, 45 seconds to get from the platforms to street level with no pedestrian congestion. It's a full 12 minutes on foot to get from the GC Madison platforms to the subway station. For comparison, old Grand Central's platforms are 2-3 minutes below street level; the subway is 3 minutes away. (Gothamist ran the same tests, and came up with similar numbers.)
Quite frankly, GC Madison is just too big. The station has four levels. Descending from old Grand Central, you start in a full-length mezzanine beneath the existing Grand Central platforms. From there you have to go down an escalator 182 feet long and nine stories deep. When I was riding it, the Very Long Escalator stopped abruptly and broke, and the thing is less than a week old. This brings you to a second full-length mezzanine deep beneath Park Avenue. The second mezzanine is built between the two levels of train platforms. I realize that this description is confusing, and quite frankly, it's because the layout is incredibly confusing. (The MTA's official diagram isn't much better.)
Second, it was totally unnecessary to spend all that money.
Grand Central is the largest train station in the world. It is far from the busiest. Pre-pandemic, Grand Central carried 67 million passengers a year; it has 67 tracks. For comparison, Penn Station across town had 107 million passengers on 21 tracks; Toronto Union Station, 72 million on 16 tracks; Madrid Puerta de Atocha, 117 million on 24 tracks. There was no need to add eight more tracks. Hell, even the MTA knew this when it was conducting environmental review in the early 2000s. The MTA originally planned to convert the 26-track lower deck of Grand Central to handle LIRR trains. Metro-North would have to make do with the 41-track upper level. The MTA called this "Option 1."
This original plan got scuttled, and instead the MTA built an 8-track station 17 stories below Manhattan.
WELL THAT'S DUMB. WHY'D THEY DO IT LIKE THAT?
Reason #1: Turf wars. Theoretically, Metro-North and the LIRR have been under one umbrella since 1968. In practice, they operate independently. They don't share tickets, they don't share management, and they each have their own union contracts. Until a couple years ago, they didn't even share a phone app. In the last few decades there have been multiple attempts to merge them together and to make them cooperate. Those proposals have gotten exactly nowhere.
Reason #2: The MTA is shortstaffed and incapable of managing its contractors. American infrastructure bureaucracy is pennywise and pound foolish to begin with, so things are unusually expensive by international standards. But the MTA is unusually bad, because there's no clear lines of accountability. The underpaid, overworked engineering staff doesn't have leeway to push back against contractors and consultants who want to throw the public's money down a hole. The MTA's work rules mean that contracts are required to be overstaffed compared to international standards. And because it's the governor in Albany that's in charge of the MTA, there's no way for city voters to actually make sure that the MTA uses the public's money well.
OKAY, SO HOW DO WE KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING NEXT TIME?
The big thing is, the MTA desperately needs to be reformed. The big ones are boring reforms: proper staffing and wages for the MTA's engineers and planners, changes to the regulations so that the bureaucracy has power to dictate terms to spendthrift contractors and consultants, and reforms to the work rules so that contracts aren't heavily overstaffed. The first place to start is to learn from countries where urban rail projects are done quickly and cheaply. These are places like Spain and Italy. In the subway construction world, the Spanish and Italians are past masters of building mass transit projects cheaply and quickly. Milan and Barcelona can build a subway line for less than 20% of what it costs New York.
These things can be fixed - but you have to actually, you know, learn from your mistakes. Establishing this kind of institutional knowledge is how Istanbul has managed to build so much rail for so cheaply. Sadly, I do not see the MTA actually doing that.
