2023.03.29 04:14 BuddhistX Fo Guang Shan Temples (FGS by Master Hsing Yun)

There are many people reading this who are not connected to a Buddhist community because there are "no Buddhist centers in my area". The good news is that in the post-pandemic world, this is no longer an issue. The goal of this series of posts (Featured Online Temple) is to showcase Buddhist centers that have an online virtual presence. These are not online-only temples. These are actual Buddhist temples with a local presence that just happened to have an online/livestream service via Zoom software or Youtube. Anyone anywhere in the world can 'attend'. You can now be a part of a Buddhist community.

Fo Guang Shan

Pureland Ch'an "Zen" BuddhismBy Venerable Master Hsing Yun
Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple, the North American Regional Headquarters of Fo Guang Shan, was built to serve as a spiritual and cultural center for those interested in learning more about Buddhism and Chinese culture. It is the intention of its founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, to propagate Humanistic Buddhism and to create a Pure Land here on earth. Hsi Lai Temple is built to fulfill these goals in the United States.

FGS has lots of resources geared for "online" that may be of interest:
They have a massive Buddha Museum complex in Taiwan. If you can't make it over there, Google did a whole walk-through 'street view' and videos of it here.

Tip:
If you sense a connection with this community, sign up for their newsletter to get updates, contact them by email and ask about becoming a regular attendee or a member. Consider supporting the group or monk with voluntary donations.

2023.03.29 01:41 tengrrl Event: Tomorrow, Wed 3/29 Columbia University Roundtable and Reading The Edinburgh Companion to the Essay (in person and on Zoom)

Please join us and spread the word for our event tomorrow (students welcome)!
Overview of the volume
The fortunes and status of the essay have been in continual flux since the genre’s beginnings in the 16th century. The 21st century, however, has marked a new time of appreciation for the genre’s formal and conceptual adaptability as well as its timeliness. At a moment when artists, scholars, and educators are responding to novel challenges posed by the text-generating capacity of artificial intelligence, essays dramatize the value of human presence and authorship. The Edinburgh Companion to the Essay (Edinburgh University Press, 2022) joins a burgeoning international conversation about the genre. This important new collection explores the essay from multiple perspectives: its theories, forms, and histories, as well as its cultural, political, and pedagogical significance. It includes 27 new pieces of scholarship and original interviews with some of the genre’s most prominent practitioners: Robert Atwan, Brian Dillon, Kaitlyn Greenidge, Leslie Jamison, Jamaica Kincaid, Claudia Rankine, David Shields, and Rebecca Solnit.

2023.03.29 01:18 BuddhistX All Nyingma Temples w/ Livestream in the United States & Canada

All Nyingma temples w/ livestream in the United States & Canada. Yeah. I know. It took me months to collect these. If you are looking for a complete list of all Nyingma temples (including the ones with NO livestream) I will post that separately at rTibetanBuddhism. (It will be titled: "All Nyingma Temples in US & Canada") But below are the temples with livestream only. We will improve this list and add more details like links to Facebook and event pages. The reason why I have the bandwidth to do this is because this is my school/tradition. (I hope someone else could do this for Drikung & Karma Kagyu because there are a lot more of those out there but I just don't have the time to do it for the Kagyu school. Sorry.)
Some that are not included on this list:
Anyway...
Many people here don't go to the temple due to a variety of reasons. ("There are no temples near me", "I'm new, I don't know where to go", "I don't know which group is right", "I don't know the culture, I don't want to offend anybody by visiting.", "My life schedule doesn't allow me to visit local temples.")

THIS POST IS FOR YOU
Nyingma (literally 'old school') is the oldest of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. (The others are Gelug, Kagyu, Sakya)

2023.03.29 00:08 cooljesus69 We did it! I'm married! Here is my budget breakdown for my March 18 wedding in Austin, TX.

Here are some of our BEAUTIFUL photos! This was just a sneak peek and they are stunning. I can't wait to get the rest!
My day has come and went on March 18th and it was an absolute dream. It truly felt like a fairytale and we are over the moon happy. Being married is so cool!
That being said I wanted to do a wedding recap. This was super helpful to me while I was planning and I hope it’s helpful to others too!
EST. BUDGET: We wanted to stay between $10,000 and $12,000
WHAT WE PAID: $12,525
This is a rough estimate and doesn’t include tips, gifts for family & friends, or taxes. I didn’t track all of that but the overall number is fairly accurate.
So there are a few things I wanted to talk about. We invited 74, 40 RSVPd yes and only 30 showed. I was pretty upset over this mostly because it was my family that ghosted and didn’t show up. They didn’t text me or call me or anything. It was hurtful at the time but now a couple of weeks later, I’m not even upset about it. It’s their loss! One of my husband's friends ended up flirting with my photographer and making her uncomfy, idk why it even has to be said but no one should try making their move on a professional who is working. It was a bit chilly but we had heaters and no rain as the forecast had predicted! Besides the few snafus we had with guests, I had such a wonderful day and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I have bad anxiety and get stressed out really easily and I had like 9 people tell me how chill I was lol which is a huge deal for someone like me. My table numbers weren’t put up correctly. Who cares? No one noticed. My husband took the keys to the truck I was going to meet him at Sekrit Theater with and he had to turn around which delayed us a bit. Whatever! My advice: enjoy your day and don’t dwell on the negative things that are BOUND to happen. Take the time to eat with your new spouse. We had the BESTTTT meal and he was even able to have seconds lol. That time was crucial for us and I valued it very much. Do a first look if you want, it didn’t change my husband’s reaction when I walked down the aisle. He cried, I ugly cried. It was beautiful and special for both of us. Don’t let anybody bully you about what you should and should not do for your wedding. Plenty of people had opinions and I literally didn’t care. It was our day and it was perfect. Soak it all in! 🫶🏻🤍
BREAKDOWN:
Venue - $7000. We did a 60 guest all-inclusive package. I paid a little extra for a cocktail hour charcuterie board and extra time at the venue. Our venue included everything: tables + linens, food, cake, bartenders (we provided alcohol), decor, officiant, DJ, florals, coordinator, literally EVERYTHING. The owner kept saying all I needed was a dress and a groom and it’s so true. They made my day unbelievably stress-free and I would go with them 10000 times over. I highly recommend finding a venue like this if you can!
Alcohol - $600. We bought too much and we actually ended up getting $140 back after we returned it to Total Wine!
Dress + accessories - $1075. My mom paid for my dress which was $750 from David’s Bridal. I got custom sleeves created for my dress and that was $210. My accessories were about $60 from Etsy (bracelet, necklace, hairpiece + earrings), my Pearl veil was $25 from SHEIN, and I wore sparkly Toms that were $30 on Amazon.
Favors - $110 for 60 from Etsy. We did personalized magnets and everyone loved them!
Photographer - $1700. She was originally booked for $1200 but we paid her an extra $500 for travel to Austin (3 hours from where we live in DFW). She is amazing and I’m so thankful we went with her. Our photos turned out beautifully.
Hair & makeup - $625. It was really pricy for just me getting services done, however, we got married in a HCOL area and it was pretty on par with what I was seeing from other vendors. My trial was $225 and day of was $400. I felt beautiful for the first time in my life and it was worth it.
Hotel - $710. We stayed at a lakeside condo where our bridal party also got condos at. It was super helpful for us to be in one spot and it was beautiful too.
Rings - $420. I have a moissanite engagement ring and decided to get a moissanite band. Mine was $380 and my husband’s ring was $40.
Photo session - $200. I booked two hours of photography at Sekrit Theater in Austin. This was worth every single penny. It felt like we were in a magical fantasy land and it was stunning. My fave posed photos are definitely from here! I 100% suggest checking it out if you’re in the area!
Dessert table - $145. I got 40 mini pies from Walmart for $.74 a piece and 60 Bundtinis from Nothing Bundt Cakes for $112. These were both a hit!
Husbands attire - $580. His suit was $500 from Men’s Wearhouse and looked so good on him. I got him custom cufflinks of our pets and his tie, he had everything else like his shoes, tie clips and undershirts.
Decor + signage - estimated around $200-$250. I got our neon sign for $130 on Amazon, and I designed my signs on Canva and printed them at Walgreens for about $10 a piece for my seating chart and welcome sign. The bar sign was like $.80. I got frames for the bar sign and guestbook station from Michael’s for like $5. Our guestbook was a cheap vinyl record I got for like $.10 at a thrift store that I got stickers for to cover the center with our engagement photos that were $20. Other bits and bobs like the card box sign, vow books, dessert table sign, etc, were from Hobby Lobby and I got them on sale but can’t remember what I paid.
Let me know if you have any questions or need any recommendations or advice!

Letters of Recommendation
AP lang - 6-7/10? nothing bad for sure, just not sure if it was anything special, probably average
a STEM teach - 8/10, I saw the rec at a later date, kind of short, but to the point and was very specific on things I had done in the class, so seems pretty good
Professor at t5 - absolutely no clue, just added in because of her reputation as a professor, doubt it was bad but doubt it was great cuz I got rejected from her university 😭
Interviews
Rice - was okay, nothing special, didn't help
Cornell - missed my interview... it was CAAAN hoping it doesn't hurt my decision but not getting in fs anyways
Essays
Personal Statement - 8/10? can't really judge my own essay, i thought it was okay, my mom hated it, some of my friends didn't understand it, others thought it was pretty good
Supplementals - 7/10, reused a lot, some were really good imo (duke, UT, maybe some more) some were really ass (rice 😭) mostly depended on the prompt and word count allowed

Additional Information:
as noted above, forgot a big lab position i secured in my update, kinda tossing. forgot my recs for gtown, but wouldn't go to gtown over UT, same logic for mich, case western, ucla + uc berkeley + usc, and probably emory/washu tbh cuz UT gave me honors. my grades are kinda weak, think its whats hurting me the most, my ecs are like decent and idk about essays so I'm pretty sure I don't get into any more schools, but I always wanted UT Austin (good school, in-state, cheap, pre-med) over nearly all of my list, so a lot of them I don't really care about that much lol. only real big ones I care about left are Duke/Brown. I lowkey am happy about JHU reject because in hindsight, 80k too much money. even now I don't know if I'd go any private over in-state at UT
