Day 1 – Osaka – 1st April
Arrive in Tokyo Haneda Airport @ 07:30hrs and allow 1hr max for us to get through arrivals etc.
Pick up 14-day JR Pass from T3 JR centre and pick up pocket wifi.
Hikari from Shinagawa is 10/40 past the hour from 7 am to 7 pm
Get the Keikyu Airport Line to Shinagawa Station where we catch the Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka Station then to Osaka-Namba where our hotel is.
Hopefully, with some sleep in us from the flight and train, we will be able to explore the area around Namba/Dotonbori for lunch before heading down to Tsutenkaku via Namba Yasaka Shrine.
See Osaka Castle then to Aquarium and Ferris Wheel in the evening.

Day 2 – Nara/Osaka – 2nd April
Train from JR Namba station (45mins on Yamatoji Line – Rapid Nara).
Walk down Sanjo Dori St to Nara Park. Look out for Nakatanidou (a Japanese sweet shop). See Kofuku-ji Hokuendo on the way. Explore Park and feed deer. See Todai-Ji, Isuien Garden, and Kasuga-Taisha. Higashimuki Shopping Street.
TeamLabs Osaka Botanical Park in the evening.

Day 3 – Hiroshima/Himeji Castle – 3rd April
Metro from Namba to Shin Osaka then Shinkansen which runs 5-7 times per hour to Hiroshima.
See the peace park, museum, and atomic bomb dome. Okonomimura. Hondori Street
(Hopefully) Train to Himeji to see the Castle. Dinner in Dotonbori.

Day 4 – Osaka – 4th April
Get train over to USJ. Aim for 30 minutes before opening time. Will have bought the express pass 7 so have timed entry already confirmed. Plan to spend an entire day here. If we don’t have dinner there, then have dinner in Dotonbori.

Day 5 – Travel to Koyasan – 5th April
Travel from JR Namba station to Gokurakubashi on the Nankai Ltd Express train using JR Pass. Then get cable car to Koya. Bus from Koya station into town and check into Temple lodgings. Walk to Daimon Gate then walk to Kongobuji Kompon Daito Pagoda then to Kongobuji and the Banryu-tei Rock Garden. Walk through Koyasan to Okunoin Cemetery to see Mausoleum of Great Master Kobo Daishi. Head back to temple lodging for dinner and relax.

Day 6 – Travel to Kyoto – 6th April
Wake up early to see the morning ceremony. If we missed anything the day prior, do that today before heading to Kyoto and checking in to hotel. See Kyoto tower and Shoseien Garden before heading over to Kiyomizu-dera, Sanneizaka and Ninenzaka. Finish by going to Komasatsu Alley.

Day 7 – Kyoto – 7th April
San-In line to Saga-Arashiyama. Walk through bamboo grove. Walk over to Senkoji Temple before heading over to monkeys. Then head to Kinkaku-ji temple.

Day 8 – Kyoto – 8th April
Fumu-ishi nari in the morning. Nishiki fish market then head over into Gion district for an explore (Shirakawa lane, Hanamikoji Street, Maruyama Park etc).

Day 9 – Travel to Tokyo – 9th April
Shinkansen to Shinjuku and check in probably around midday. Shibuya and Harajuku – Meiji Jingu Shrine, Takeshita Street – walk to Shibuya, see the crossing and the Hachiko statue, Shibuya sky tree.

Day 10 – Tokyo – 10th April
Ueno – Ameyoko shopping district, wander around Ueno Park, head over to Senso-Ji and Nakamise-Dori street, and finish off at Tokyo Sky Tree.

Day 11 – Tokyo – 11th April
Get the train to Shimoyoshida from Shinjuku to go to the Arakurayama Sengen Park to get great views of Mt. Fuji and hopefully the cherry blossom. Last train back to Shinjuku around 5.30. Recommendations as to what to do after seeing the iconic sight.

Day 12 – Tokyo – 12th April
Go to the art aquarium, explore the Tokyo area, and go to TeamLabs. Do we need to do both? Is it best to just do the acquarium or TeamLabs? Also any recommendations for what to see or do in the Tokyo area would be appreciated.

This is USA based.
I’ve been seeing someone for almost a year and we both have set an engagement date to have our marriage legalized and the ceremony (all on the same month). But as the days progress, I am starting to have doubts because I am having to make too many sacrifices to be with her (as she wants me to move).
Here are the issues:

1. My career is more in IT / government with cybersecurity and hers in automotive. She works in the private sector and I work in the public sector. For me, this is job security with good benefits, and as a manager, she has a stellar reputation at her company (which is her job security). The issue is, my work doesn’t exist in her home state and I cannot transfer my job. So that would mean I need to make a big career change (basically a sector transition). And currently, finding a job for me is going to be a big challenge since my interview skills are not the best. And, I already make 6 figures, so going back from public to private sector, I would need to take a significant income cut in order to find another job. (Because mid-level dev jobs are difficult for me to land, considering my experience is elsewhere.). I honestly don’t feel comfortable with this.
   
2. I have a house with a very good interest rate. She has 2 homes (also with good interest rates). We both have worked hard to get to where we are. She wants me to either I sell my home, or put it on rent. And if I move to her house, she might not add my name to her house. And about the last statement, she said she would do this, and now is reverting back with her statement. So basically, it seems like I am giving up my house for love.
   
3. I am currently working on my masters from one of the best universities in the world. If I was to move to her state, and with the significant income cut, I don’t think I can afford my education and will be forced to drop. With my current job, I can manage all my living expenses and my education. With my current job, one plus point is that there are lots of downtime so I can easily make time on my class work. If I change jobs, I am basically giving this up and don’t feel comfortable with this.
   
4. Going back to above points, my parents don’t want me to leave my stable job. This job has given me a stable life and I am leaving for an unstable one. The risk here with private sector jobs is that you can be fired at any time, with no warning. They are worried from that point. Even my grandparents don’t want me to move or sell my house. They also want me to finish my education.
   
5. She did request a prenup, which I agreed. And at the moment, she’s keeping the details her financial details to herself and not sharing much with me. I have already disclosed all mine in what assets I want to shield (everything prior to marriage). With her talks to her attorney, I don’t know what’s going on and I feel the details are being kept away from me.
   
6. Last year, when she and I were dating, there were lots of family related issues that took place. My family ended up disrespecting her family (and my GF) and her parents do not approve of my parents. My parents also do not approve either. I fought against my parents approval and tried to convince them to see the good side. It has led to a point where I am not in talking terms with my family (or possibly disowned). My parents think her family is lying / hiding things / or being wishy-washy. The other thing I noticed is that her mother is very dominating and only seem to want things her way (I see this same trait in my GF). Her mother is also very pushy about wanting a commitment, and legalizing the marriage / ceremony. I see this as a sign of concern.
   
7. My GF doesn’t like it when I talk about my family. It makes me think she might never let me support them even in their old age. Or if we have children, she might not let them see my parents. I honestly don’t feel comfortable with this.
   
8. GF and her family are not US citizens. In fact, her parents don’t even have a status. So once the marriage happens, I would have to begin work for sponsoring her. The 2 concern here are (1) when our families met last year, her mother made a comment “at least let them legalize the marriage so she can begin her citizenship work.” (It was something like this). That statement gave off warnings in my head, are they wanting to marry for citizenship or for love? (2) My family asked about their retirement and health (and so did her ex), they don’t have an answer. My family seem to be protecting me from all this because living in USA without health insurance in old age is very bad. Plus, their retirement is also a question, as they believe GF’s family might not be able to afford and will depend on me and her. My parents can support themselves, but her parents, I don’t know. They’re not being transparent about this.
   

The one good thing is that my GF and I have a great bond. She’s taken care of me and so have I. She says I am very loyal, which is exactly what she’s looking for. And same with me, I love her as well. Her family is very caring and have supported me as well. They’ve accepted me for who I am.
So basically, I am giving up my job, house, maybe masters and even my family at this point for marriage. And also considering the family situation, this is too big of a commitment and I have to make a lot of sacrifices to be with here. I don’t know if this is such a good idea and I no longer have my family’s support, this also makes things uneasy. I am starting to lose sleep over this.
And if I let her go, I will regret my decision. She’s a great woman, and every family has loved her for who she is.
QUESTION: Has anyone been in such a situation like this? OR are there people who can offer better advice here on my situation?

Hi all. So, I (23M) have been together with my partner (21M) for nearly 5 years, our anniversary is four months away. We began dating just after I graduated high-school, and just before he entered his Jr year. This is my first real relationship, and my partners 3rd.
At first, the relationship began as a let's try things out sort of thing, but we hit it off without really ever talking about things that really are important, but at the time weren't really thought of. 2 years pass by rather quickly, and after having to come home from college campus when campuses closed for covid, my partner moved in with me and my parents.
My partner has always battled with major depression and anxiety, but at this point things seemed to get better after he moved in with us and away from his verbally abusive and drunk father. He was able to start working part time, lost weight, namely due to him not having a license or car and needing to bike to work, and spend more time doing things he liked. However, there were things that remained that created tension between us, namely cleanliness, privacy (my partner goes through my search history, emails, and conversations) and sex, which the amount we had fell sharply shortly after he moved in, which is hard on me with the higher sex drive, especially as my partner is against porn and often describes himself as ace.
Fast forward to the winter and seasonal depression hits, and my partners health takes a huge hit. He is no longer employed, gains his weight back plus more, and has little to no energy to do things that he enjoys. At this point, things begin to stack up for me responsibility wise, meaning rent, cleaning, handling medical related issues, which at the time I was willing to do because I love partner and wanted to help get him back to where he was. Looking back, I feel I've since been more of a parental figure than a partner.
Things progress, and we move out of my parents house after a year of my partner living with us due to a falling out between my mother and partner. We've now been living in a studio apartment for a year and 6 months, on a yearly lease, and im still in college after a change of majors. My partner was going to begin working again, but never did due to his depressional and anxiety issues. My partner ends up in the hospital for self harming after a fight we had several months later, and it's in the hospital we learn he has BPD, of which the symptoms were made worse by one of the antidepressants he was taking.
Shortly after I got a new job, where I've been for over a year now, and my pay has increased dramatically since, nearly doubling. My partners mental health has become better enough that self harm or suicide has no longer been a worry for quite some time. Finances are coming into order, and I've been able to think about the future, things like building our home, whether or not a child is something I want, and my career path.
Coming into the last few months or so, arguments about chores getting done, him getting a job and liscense, spending time together, intimate or not, privacy, and how much sex and the quality of sex have began bothering me much more, especially as my understanding of depression has grown and I know now these are likely personality traits that are only amplified by depression, not caused by it. There is also tension for me when it comes to whether or not I want a child, as my partner does not want one, nor do I, and he agrees, think he'd ever be ready for one if he changed his mind.
It was his birthday this week, and I told him tomorrow I wanted to have a talk about us, to which he seems to have forgotten about, which is likely my fault as I've told him this a couple times before and have never followed through. I think many of these things are probably unresovable, just differences between us to which neither are to blame, especially as I know his depression and BPD are life-long and only make things worse when he eventually falls into periods of greater depression.
I'm both conflicted about whether or not I want to break up, and if I did, I'm worried of where my partner would go, as he'd likely end up back with his father, who is much better now, but is having financial issues of his own, and the depression spiraling to a possible critical point, especially since my partner often tells me he'd attempt if I were gone. My question then is whether or not I should end things with my partner?

I'm thinking of ending things with my (23M) depressed partner (21M) whom I live with, over disagreements of chores getting done, my partner getting a job, spent time together, privacy, our sex life, feeling like a parent to my partner, and the possibility of a child in the distant future. I'm conflicted about this because of my deep care for my partner, as well of what would happen to my partner if I did end things, him likely ending up living with his troubled father, and his depression possibly spiraling to a critical point. My question is whether or not I should end things?

I work in a barestaurant in a hotel. Right now they are doing a thing where any positive review with our name mentioned gets us a $25 gift card. I know it may be ethically questionable but I had my husband write a review. That $25 is most of why we have food now 😭. Also this week we had a law school rent out the restaurant but bring in their own catering. There were a ton of leftovers, chicken, salad, fruit, roasted veggies, and sweet rolls, none of my coworkers wanted it so I brought home 2 large catering trays full of food. Thanks for listening I guess. I wanted to share how like bittersweet it is but none of my friend would get it they all have always had money.

Welcome dinner at Tribeca Tavern: (100 guests, budgeted $15k, spent $16.7k, FIL paid $13k) -we rented out a brew pub on St Patrick’s Day, so we knew the minimum would be high and budgeted accordingly. We told everyone to drink the top shelf liquor and actually came pretty close to hitting the minimum!
Venue rental, food, and open bar ($13k after tax and gratuity) —included plated dinner with choice of steak, chicken, salmon, or vegetarian option, multiple appetizer stations, and dessert display of cheesecake, bread pudding, brownies and ice cream
Attire ($3k) -this includes my dress which was actually my original wedding gown and so much more expensive than I would’ve spent ordinarily
Decor ($100) -this was all thrifted florals! I got all the materials at our local scrap exchange and put some arrangements together. I was super pleased with how they turned out and I’m planning to donate them right back to the store
Sound system ($100) -the restaurant didn’t have an AV system so we brought in a cheap speaker and mic
Photographer ($600) -this was a last minute addition and we ended up hiring the photographer from our proposal! He was chill and while we don’t expect super artsy photos, I’m sure they’ll document the day well. We contracted him for 2 hours but he stayed for 3, he didn’t charge us for the third so we just added his hourly rate to the tip to cover it
The Good: We had so much fun! I loved being able to chat with all our guests and spending more casual quality time with friends and family. The food came out great and everyone seemed to have a great time. The speeches were beautiful and it was so meaningful to have everyone there. We debated whether we should just do a rehearsal with people in the wedding party or out of town guests, but we just decided to invite everyone and go all out. No regrets on that!
The less good: -My husband’s brother has autism and was not prepared for the size of our welcome dinner. I’m not sure where the breakdown in communication happened, but he was not prepared for such a loud and crowded event and ended up having to leave almost immediately. That sucked because he can usually handle crowds and such if he’s properly prepared, so we should have communicated better with him. -my father in law had Covid the week before the wedding. This added a lot of stress to planning. He wore an n95 for the events and thus far no one has gotten sick, but it was a tough decision. My brother in law decided not to come to the rehearsal because of it, and was pressuring my sister not to give a speech because he didn’t want her anywhere near my husband’s dad. We ended up changing the speech order so my sister could go first and then leave the room, but my brother in law still wasn’t happy with this and it caused a lot of drama.
WEDDING DAY!! (Original budget: $50k, spent ~$53k, paid for almost entirely by my parents) -we wanted a garden-style wedding, but we also wanted a venue with an indoor ceremony option that we wouldn’t be disappointed to have to use. We ended up being able to have an outdoor ceremony (65 degrees in March!!). Unfortunately, our ceremony followed a cold snap so all the grass and greenery that usually naturally covers our venue was dead. Had we known in advance, we would have had the florist add greenery to the terrace, but oh well. It added a nice spooky forest vibe to contrast with our enchanted garden florals! We were very happy with the wedding overall.
Very All Inclusive Venue- Chandelier Event Venue, Cary, NC ($30k) -we went for a truly all inclusive venue both for the price and the convenience. The package included an open bar for 120, 2 passed apps (pork arancini and fried green tomato bites), a fruit and cheese display, 2 signature cocktails (we did a bourbon peach sweet tea and a strawberry basil vodka lemonade), a plated meal (salad and a choice of filet, shrimp risotto, vegetarian risotto, and a vegan meal), 8 hours of photography coverage, a day of planner, and a dj. The venue owners were absolute pros. The venue was relatively new, opened in late 2019 and obviously shut down for a while during Covid, but the owners had owned a catering company for years. The food was absolutely amazing and the owners and planner made sure there was tons of food set aside for us and time for us to eat it. The only thing we didn’t get to try was the fruit and cheese! We chose a venue that was a little more budget friendly in order to go all out on decor and florals; we decided we’d rather have the most lavish wedding our venue had ever had rather than a sparser wedding at a pricier venue

I just need to vent this somewhere because it's not a big enough deal but it is bothering me.
My FIL owned a home that he was renting out to his friend for like 15 years I think? That friend moved out recently and after doing a TON of renovations, offered to let my husband and I rent it out. They'd charge us for cheap and it gives us time to save money for our own home in the future. It's such a great opportunity and I'm so grateful.
I've expressed how grateful I am to both MIL ans FIL numerous times, but for some reason MIL kept asking husband if I was genuinely happy with it. We've been in this house for about 2 weeks now and she asks him every single time if I'm genuinely happy or if I'm just being nice. Her reasoning for checking is that my parents home is so nice and lavish, that she can't help but feel insecure that a small house, 2 bedroom house like this is enough for me.
Now, I'll admit my parents house is HUGE, like two story 6 bedroom home with a pool and 3 spot garage. To top it off,my mom has a fancy taste in furniture so it feels pretty luxurious walking in. But that current house, I did not grow up there. Ive never even LIVED there. They got that home a year or so after I moved out.That is not my childhood home at all. In fact, I've lived in like 7 different homes growing up, we've lived in trailer homes, apartments, 3 bedroom houses, than 4 bedroom. I'll admit I grew up never wanting, but when it comes to a home I can adapt anywhere. Before moving to this new home my husband and I were renting a 1 bedroom apartment. Before I met him, I rented a 300 square foot studio and before that rented a home with roomates in a poor area. Like, this is a HUGE upgrade and I'm always telling MIL how happy I am with it, yet she always goes to my husband and triple checks because "her mother's home is just so nice"
Idk, I appreciate her worrying about us, but I'm genuinely happy and to be questioned like that makes me feel like she thinks I'm spoiled and I look down at her and my husband for growing up poor when I don't. There's also a strict language barrier between us, so I personally cannot convey my full feelings and when I ask my husband to tell her that I didn't grow up there and that this is more than I could ask for, she doesn't believe him. It's just getting a little annoying and I can't vent this anywhere else.

Welcome dinner at Tribeca Tavern: (100 guests, budgeted $15k, spent $16.7k, FIL paid $13k) -we rented out a brew pub on St Patrick’s Day, so we knew the minimum would be high and budgeted accordingly. We told everyone to drink the top shelf liquor and actually came pretty close to hitting the minimum!
Venue rental, food, and open bar ($13k after tax and gratuity) —included plated dinner with choice of steak, chicken, salmon, or vegetarian option, multiple appetizer stations, and dessert display of cheesecake, bread pudding, brownies and ice cream
Attire ($3k) -this includes my dress which was actually my original wedding gown and so much more expensive than I would’ve spent ordinarily
Decor ($100) -this was all thrifted florals! I got all the materials at our local scrap exchange and put some arrangements together. I was super pleased with how they turned out and I’m planning to donate them right back to the store
Sound system ($100) -the restaurant didn’t have an AV system so we brought in a cheap speaker and mic
Photographer ($600) -this was a last minute addition and we ended up hiring the photographer from our proposal! He was chill and while we don’t expect super artsy photos, I’m sure they’ll document the day well. We contracted him for 2 hours but he stayed for 3, he didn’t charge us for the third so we just added his hourly rate to the tip to cover it
The Good: We had so much fun! I loved being able to chat with all our guests and spending more casual quality time with friends and family. The food came out great and everyone seemed to have a great time. The speeches were beautiful and it was so meaningful to have everyone there. We debated whether we should just do a rehearsal with people in the wedding party or out of town guests, but we just decided to invite everyone and go all out. No regrets on that!
The less good: -My husband’s brother has autism and was not prepared for the size of our welcome dinner. I’m not sure where the breakdown in communication happened, but he was not prepared for such a loud and crowded event and ended up having to leave almost immediately. That sucked because he can usually handle crowds and such if he’s properly prepared, so we should have communicated better with him. -my father in law had Covid the week before the wedding. This added a lot of stress to planning. He wore an n95 for the events and thus far no one has gotten sick, but it was a tough decision. My brother in law decided not to come to the rehearsal because of it, and was pressuring my sister not to give a speech because he didn’t want her anywhere near my husband’s dad. We ended up changing the speech order so my sister could go first and then leave the room, but my brother in law still wasn’t happy with this and it caused a lot of drama.
WEDDING DAY!! (Original budget: $50k, spent ~$53k, paid for almost entirely by my parents) -we wanted a garden-style wedding, but we also wanted a venue with an indoor ceremony option that we wouldn’t be disappointed to have to use. We ended up being able to have an outdoor ceremony (65 degrees in March!!). Unfortunately, our ceremony followed a cold snap so all the grass and greenery that usually naturally covers our venue was dead. Had we known in advance, we would have had the florist add greenery to the terrace, but oh well. It added a nice spooky forest vibe to contrast with our enchanted garden florals! We were very happy with the wedding overall.
Very All Inclusive Venue- Chandelier Event Venue, Cary, NC ($30k) -we went for a truly all inclusive venue both for the price and the convenience. The package included an open bar for 120, 2 passed apps (pork arancini and fried green tomato bites), a fruit and cheese display, 2 signature cocktails (we did a bourbon peach sweet tea and a strawberry basil vodka lemonade), a plated meal (salad and a choice of filet, shrimp risotto, vegetarian risotto, and a vegan meal), 8 hours of photography coverage, a day of planner, and a dj. The venue owners were absolute pros. The venue was relatively new, opened in late 2019 and obviously shut down for a while during Covid, but the owners had owned a catering company for years. The food was absolutely amazing and the owners and planner made sure there was tons of food set aside for us and time for us to eat it. The only thing we didn’t get to try was the fruit and cheese! We chose a venue that was a little more budget friendly in order to go all out on decor and florals; we decided we’d rather have the most lavish wedding our venue had ever had rather than a sparser wedding at a pricier venue (Cont. in comments)

Honestly not sure if this was the best subreddit but I’m hoping I could find someone who had had life experiences and wisdom about my situation.
I have parents who are 60 years old currently staying at one of my siblings. They are looking to move out and get a space of their own. My parents are not financial-savvy at all, and have unfortunately lost the assets they accumulated in their 30-40s due to things like being house-poor, never investing, consumerism, etc. An important detail, is that they have a “buy first-think later” mindset, and lack the knowledge/experiences to critically analyze the severity of financial decisions. Example, when I bought my car the advice they gave me was “it’s normal in America to finance these things” - obviously in hindsight it is normal and common, but not the smartest choice and there are ways to be smart about financing.
My regret in life is that (as a first generation immigrant) is that I didn’t prioritize becoming financial savvy sooner to assist and guide my parents from their destructive choices. Now as a 30 year old, I’m able to do better on my own and really planting the seeds for my future stability and growth.
Since they’ve been living with my siblings for about 10 years, they haven’t had the chances (luckily) to make huge financial decisions like buy another home.
However now they’re entertaining the idea of buying a mobile home as a way to get their own space, pay cash, and avoid any monthly costs (aside from taxes, utilities, lot fee etc)
My parents have always made choices that “seemed like it made sense” on the surface, but has had underlying negative consequences. As previously stated, they lack the capability sadly, to critically examine the potential future outcomes and do a predicted cost-analysis.
My gut feeling is that this is a bad choice. Although they don’t have much in their name, they ultimately will have some SS benefits and two children (one of which is me) who are homeowners. I feel that their money/benefits spent is better going to the family’s asset and they would be able to live in a newer townhome. I’d essentially be their landlord and they’d only give me maybe $1,000 a month. I’m still young no kids and actually was planning on renting my townhome out in 2-3 years. In exchange for my parents living more comfortably, I would not receive full market rent and figure out how to cover the difference (which I might be able to).
I’d also feel like it’s better that my parents don’t pour their funds into a mobile home because at the end of the day, the home may have depreciated and it went nowhere. However I do understand decisions don’t always have to turn a profit - I just don’t see any valid arguments for them picking a mobile home because it’s “cheap”.
I know some ppl have to choose a mobile home, and while my parents don’t have much they do have some alternatives.
I guess I’m just asking for life advice from others and if they’ve encountered a similar experience with family

Moving from a home I’ve owned 16 years into one I just bought.
Old house had both flood (required for the zone) and homeowners’ insurance. Nothing that ever happened, water-wise, was covered. 3” of water in basement from a rain storm…not covered. Burst pipe inside a wall…not covered. 1” of water in basement from water heater going bad…not covered. Finally after thousands spent on various things, the water issues stopped for the last few years.
Just went to the new house to meet a contractor (unrelated to this) and guess what…water in the basement! 🤪We had fairly heavy rain the last 48 hours. It was just a large puddle, not standing water, so at least there’s that. But my god…here we go again. Wondering if I should have just rented…
The floor is slightly slanted and puddle looks like a lot of it went into a floor drain. The contractor said it looks like it is coming in from an outside wall. Do not have flood insurance at the new house, as it’s on a hill…but flood doesn’t cover storms anyway.
The house did “come with” a one year home warranty.

I have a lovely first world dilemma which I'm going round in circles about. Hope you can share some advice.
Basically whether to go and live out my backpacker dreams or to stay in my cushy job and home.
I have wanted to go to New Zealand for years and years - everyone raves about it, and the outdoorsy culture sounds perfect for me. I recently applied for my working holiday visa, and was approved to go there for a year (maybe 2) any time before December this year. I just turned 30 so with the age restrictions, I'll never get another chance to go and work there.
At home I have things pretty good to be honest, but I'm bored. Senior management in a small charity, low paid compared to other industries but I'm comfortable. I'm pretty happy in work, have lots of autonomy and flexibility.
But outside of work, I'm bored, and restless, and just a bit lonely. I've been in my city long enough to outgrow it but I also don't have any real social circle here. The main thing I care about is gardening - I spend most of my time and money on it.
If I go abroad, I'm lucky enough to be able to rent my house out but would need to find a temporary or permanent home for my cat.
I'm so aware how lucky I am compared to many others right now so i really hope i dont sound whiney. But I'm struggling to press go on this decision. I have to ask here because I don't have friends at home that I would ask about this.

I hire for an organization. A trend I've noticed is people applying for our jobs from Alberta. Great! But when you interview them, they're excited about the lifestyle, but haven't thought about the rent/housing costs ("I heard it's expensive but I'm ready" = no you're not) the commute, parking (car is NOT KING here) and the fact to replicate their huge house in Alberta they have to live in Hope. Or swallow the reality it's a condo or basement suite or or or.
I'm at the point now where if someone doesn't show they have seriously thought about these issues in the interview, it's a no.
Why?
We've had people sign job offers only to back out once the reality hits. They realize they can't replicate their lifestyle here.
People, you need to research this stuff BEFORE. You might be a 4 car household in AB, here it's unlikely you can find room for them all unless you can afford a multi million dollar home. You probably have a lovely big home, see previous sentence. Most likely, you sweet child, you have free parking at your AB job. Here you're lucky if you get parking. Most of us plebs take transit. Most likely you will be too. That's not even getting into the fight for daycare/ oversubscribed schools/ etc.
Really think about it. It's not just the cost of living, it's a whole change in lifestyle. And then there's the politics....
