I really really hope that someone can help me with my situation. Picking a major has been destroying me this past year (I am currently finishing my sophomore year). I feel very lost and anxious and have fallen into a bit of a year-long depression over this choice. If someone would be able to read all the way through and offer me some advice, I would be insanely grateful!
For context, I feel a ton of pressure from my parents to pick an employable and "useful" major because of the debt they will be in to pay for my college degree. I go to a highly ranked university, but it is also extremely expensive. I was lucky enough that I got into ivy and my parents were willing to try to pay for my dream school.
My parents want me to pick an employable major so that their investment in my education will pay off, which of course I understand. I went in thinking I wanted to work in politics and law, which they were very supportive of. However, after interning in the field, I have become very disillusioned. Although I still enjoy politics as an academic subject, I do not have any interest in working in the field.
After realizing I didn't want to work in politics, I applied for an internship at a contemporary art museum the summer after my freshman year. I worked as an assistant to the curator, and even though most of my work was easy and very clerical (cataloging books, spreadsheets, etc.) I felt really inspired being around art and working to bring the exhibition together. I felt like I was doing something important for the community. On top of that, I really felt like I was a part bringing together an important and beautiful thing, even though I played only a small role. I caught the "art bug" as some might say, and now I desperately want to work in the arts. I think the most direct path to working in a contemporary art museum like the one I interned at would be an Art History degree.
However, my parents are not supportive about an Art History degree. They have even made me doubt if I want it myself. My mother was an artist and expresses a lot of nihilism about the art world. She has basically begged me not to pursue a career in the field. She has said that she doesn't think I will like it, there are no jobs, that art history would be a very "dry" and boring subject for me, the pay is low, and has expressed a lot of disdain for curators/art historians.
I have tried a lot of alternatives/compromises with my family this year. I tried to transfer into the business school in my college so that I could have at least a business degree as well as an art history degree, but I truly hated the classes. I felt so lost that I ended up withdrawing from the math and science requirements I was in and not completing the transfer. I lost all motivation and fell into a deep depression and beat myself up for being too lazy to really apply myself. I wasn't interested in the material and could barely get through the readings and homework. It's gotten to the point where I am considering withdrawing from another class this semester because I am scared I will fail it. I feel really disappointed in myself that I seemingly can't succeed in any technical classes (math, science, etc.).
I feel like I came to college because I really love the pursuit of knowledge and love being knowledgeable about a particular topic that is important to me. I've always been inclined towards fields like English, Art, Philosophy, History, and Politics because I feel that they are personally important to me, I think that they are important in the context of the world, and I like being knowledgeable about them!
These are my current major options:

1. My school offers a Politics, Philosophy, and Economics major. I think this could be good for me because it is very versatile, explores my interests, and I could pair it with an art history minor and a fine arts minor and hopefully still be able to work in the arts while having more employment options. I also have already finished the Econ portion with A's, so the more "technical" part of the major is out of the way and I would be free to learn about politics and philosophy. I really like the idea of being knowledgeable about these topics, and the whole reason I decided to go to college in the first place was to learn about these topics (I was debating between university and music school). However, the downsides are I am terrified that a minor in art history will not be enough to get me a job in the field, and I will be stuck in politics/business and hate my job.
2. I could just say fuck it and major in Art History. I have a friend that majored in art history at my school and now works at a fine arts business company, which I would love to do and hopefully can also work in a job like that. I would probably have to find a minor that is more employable, which I'm still not sure what that could be for me. I am just worried that I will become very disillusioned with the art world like my mother says and end up having no backup plan.
3. I could major in English. My parents are actually supportive of this one since I would learn a technical skill like writing. I love English and have taken amazing English classes where I have loved spend hours on hours writing and revising my work. However, I just don't know if I have what it takes to be a writer, and I'm not sure what the path forward with this major would be for me. I guess I could still minor in art history with this one.

And for what? For having the audacity in another post to suggest that a sureddit like anarchy chess can and should do better than continuing to make en passant, knook, and new response dropped jokes for months on end even after they cease to be funny.
I literally don’t know what to say or how to respond to this. I’m besides myself. Even if you don’t agree with that idea, it’s insane to me that multiple people would take to threats of violence over something like this.
I’m ashamed of this place.

Any person over that age of 20 who reposts post/stories from a celebrity or a celebrity fan account on social media is emotionally immature or weird as hell.
I constantly see people repost photos or posts of from celebrities to their personal accounts with captions like “so proud of you” or “go watch/listen to their album/movie now!” or “absolutely perfect, no words”… like…
First, you don’t know this person at all, why go out of your way to repost every single thing you see from them? You’re absolutely allowed to admire or like a celebrity, however posting their posts/stories to your page as if you had some part in their accomplishment is delusional. Second, the people who fawn over celebrities are ironically the ones who never share or support local artists or people in their community who are making their way in the industry. Third, why are you so die hard over a person (yes, I’m talking about Harry Style and Flo Pugh) who literally wouldn’t care if you fell off the face of the earth? Touch grass.

I am so excited for the new Gate Guardian cards. I love when Konami makes a weird archetype based on loosely related monsters played in one duel in the anime (that's why I play Umi control). Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is an elusive beast that has eluded [official] detection for years. The current “big dog” Grand Theft Auto V was first released way back in September 2013, and has been available across two console generations (Xbox 360/PS3 and Xbox One/PS4). It will even be available natively on next-generation Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles, which is quite unprecedented in the gaming realm. So, while Rockstar seems reticent to just letting us wait in agony for any news on GTA 6, it is at least giving us some new updates on its two current hot properties: GTA Online and Red Dead Online.
In the case of the incredibly popular (and highly lucrative) GTA Online, Rockstar says that a big “summer update” is coming for gamers with a “fun mix of diverse” content to partake in. Even more interesting is the fact that the developers indicate that its “biggest update ever” is coming before the end of 2020. That update will include new Heists that will take place in a completely new location, which has definitely piqued our interests.
red dead online As for Red Dead Online, its next big update is actually arriving next week; on July 28th to be exact. Red Dead Online hasn’t exactly been teaming with new content, as the last big update for the online component of Red Dead Redemption 2 dropped way back in December 2019. However, Rockstar is promising a new Frontier Pursuit mode with a focus on “naturalism” and a new battle pass-type component, which is conveniently named Outlaw Pass. Finally, Rockstar says that it has addressed tons of bugs with the game and has taken community feedback to heart with this release, which is definitely appreciated.
In addition to the game updates on the way, Rockstar also took the time to address the well-being of its online communities. “We are also committed to ensuring that our games are fun for everyone and as safe as possible from modders, cheaters, hackers, and those who seek to harass other players,” said the company in its blog post.
“So far this year, we have taken action on hundreds of thousands of players caught violating community rules across both games. Please help us keep our communities safe and fun by reporting any sort of cheating either directly in-game or via our dedicated web reporting tools for both Red Dead Online and GTA Online.”
It's good to see that Rockstar is cracking down on those looking to spoil the fun for everyone, and its methods for “taking out” such offenders is among the best in the industry.

I had an IEP in school 6 through 12th grade. I had reading comprehension issues and I struggled in math but I do fine at reading now.
I often wondered if I had an intellectual disability but my therapist said in order to pass my CNA (I got certified in high school) id have to be average to pass. Is this true?
I called the school recently and asked if I had to be evaluated and they said not necessarily, they said the teacher would have to make judgement call on it. And my mom said a lot of kids were on it at the time. I was in normal classes and settings it's just a few classes I was in a lower end of it (math and I took a reading class). I missed a lot of school as well and fell behind so that did it as well. ADD runs rapid in my family as well. The teachers never said anything about having me tested for an intellectual issue, I just fell behind and struggled a lot in math.
A teacher in school knew my sisters and told them he wrote a letter recommendation to a day vacation they offered in the iep. I hope he didn't tell them I was in a IEP at school.
My oldest sister was in those classes due to her ADHD. My family is filled with ADD. my middle sister also struggled my mom said she said "she got through with a smile".
I missed a lot of school. I passed my CNA with a B. I took the state test and passed. What if my friends know.. and everyone knows that I'm slow and they don't say anything... I hope they think I'm smart. I work in the hospital, my mom said they wouldn't have hired you if they thought you couldn't do the job.
Is my therapist right? That I'd have to be average intelligence to pass my CNA exam?
I had a reading class, in English class I was in normal classes. Science class I kinda struggled in but it was a mix of IEP students and regular students.
Math class I took a algebra course but it was an alternative setting. Same with Science class sophomore year. Some classes were alternative settings. But math and reading I had an IEP for.
So I'm slow, it sucks. I can't believe it took this long to figure out.My mom took my out half of the year in 4th grade also, which could've been a time where I fell behind. Then she put me back in cause I wasn't learning or paying attention to her.
This has ruined my life. How can I go this long without knowing? My friends and family have to know... I'm sure they talk.

I did go to community College for a few weeks, had to take standardize tests on certain subjects. I didn't do hot, but I did it rather quickly as well. I tend to do that and have major anxiety on tests.
Lastly, I missed a lot of school... like my mom had to go to court over it. So maybe that's why? I'm thinking if I tried, studied and went everyday I don't know how it would've went. Maybe I wouldn't of had to even been in those classes. See with my CNA I didn't miss class, so I got a B. But it's common sense. I passed in high school (the state cerification) I know some girls who didn't pass. Doesn't mean they aren't smart, I'm just saying. Is this anxiety like my therapist said?

As in the title; I can’t help but notice WotC continues to keep Garruk missing from the ‘big’ narrative events. Of the five original printed Planeswalkers, Garruk seems the one to have been most pushed off to the side; certainly since the tail end of the Bolas arc (which is when I started to pay attention).
He popped up again in Eldraine but since has been very much out of the spotlight. Even a plane like Ikoria seems ripe for his involvement.
And I was wondering if perhaps the community had any theories as to why he is being kept out? Is he narratively difficult to include? Is he unappealing from a marketing perspective?

Happy yield farming, folks!

My mother died 20 years ago. So, you'd think that I was pretty well over it. And, I am. After 20 years of writing about the guilt, shame, pain, anger, and displacement, I am what I am calling post-grief. But, now I am ready to TALK about my memories. Believe it or not, I've never left comfortable talking to anyone. Not to friends who have living mothers. Their mom relationships are in real time, are still happening, are in the present tense. Mine are in the past tense. It feels weird if a friend says she went shopping with her mom, to reply, I used to like shopping with my mom. There is a living/dead disconnect. My memories are met with sorries, and conversations end.
I also never felt like I had anything in common or a way to share with friends who have lost a mom. Either they are in active grief, new members to the club, or our stories are around the death experience only.
I woke up the other day (the truth is, I got high and landed on just the right wavelength) to look at the photo of my mother and for the first time ever, say out loud, God I miss my mom! But do I? It is more that I want to miss my mom, but it has been 20 years of blocking that missing for the benefit of others, because I don't have a community of others who want to do more than the sad Facebook post of a picture of their mom on her birthday, getting older every year.
Please, can anyone relate? Am I the only one? I've been thinking about this for a month, and finally decided I was going to explode if I didn't try to create a platform for myself and hopefully others. Please validate my feelings. I'm a longtime zine creator, writer, event planner and performer. I want to take all my experiences and reasons for being and put it into creating a post-grief, death-positive, very specific community of folks who miss their mother and are looking to share memories, not pain.

Basically, I’ve (18f) spent all my life up to this point trying to please my parents. Mom especially. I did everything she did just to make her happy as a child, and it severely cost me my self confidence. Was nearly driven to suicide because of it; I felt I could never satisfy her, therefore I hated myself for never being good enough. Almost no one knows who I really am because they associate me as my mom’s daughter; unfortunately my mom is well known where I live, and I am now too because how much I tried to follow in her shoes.
Nowadays, I try to avoid her as much as possible. Problem is, she’s severely held me back from gaining independence. She forced me to hold off on driving until I was almost 18, guilting me by saying girls insurance is more expensive than a guys (I know now this is false). I currently only have a permit, for I failed my first drivers test almost immediately because she rushed me to get it asap when I was about to start community college. I will be testing again soon as I am more confident though.
Worse still, I haven’t been allowed to get a job. At first, I wasn’t allowed until I could drive. We live a 5 minute bike ride away from grocery stores, but mom doesn’t trust me going out on my own in case I would be out at night. Can’t even take public transport because mom said I would be taken advantage of because of my looks (she’d often reference I look like the dumb blonde stereotype). Nowadays, mom says I’m not “ready” for a job because I am slow with my chores, and that I don’t have enough “grunt work” under my belt. At this point I know now that she’s spewing bullshit; I finish all my chores the day it’s expected/assigned, and I have done hundreds of community service hours alongside mom herself in my years-long attempt to please her. I have enough volunteer work experience to overfill a resume and then some. I also plan to try to get a job after I get my license; though mom might put up a fight.
But standing up for myself is very difficult for me. I literally want to curl up in fear every time mom shouts. She’s threatened me throughout my childhood, and though the threats never come true, I’ve always feared one day they would. The threats ranged from wanting to burn/toss/rip my toys, to wanting to smack/beat/spank me, to wanting to break up my past relationship, to divorce threats and more. But I know she is capable of violence if angry enough. She had struck me once a couple years ago because I kept struggling in school, and she often pinched/grabbed me hard as a child as a way to tell me that I fucked up at something without her needing to say anything in public. She supports beating children who are “assholes”; she told me so herself.
I tried standing up for myself yesterday; dad asked me if I was going to attend a reconciliation mass. I mustered up the courage to say no; I’m an atheist and my parents don’t respect it. I don’t think mom heard my answer, but she got offended dad even asked me. She yelled “what are you talking about?! She is GOING.” That was enough to freak me out. And so I went, not wanting a fight. I caved in that easily…
The advice the therapist gave me about finding the courage to stand up for myself is new; the appointment was on Wednesday. I understand it will take a while. But with what happened yesterday… I said no, but I was still easily scared off by just hearing mom yelling. I don’t think she even heard me, but she was so pissed off at the fact that I was even given a choice. I will keep on trying, but it won’t be easy.
Anyone have similar experiences? How did you get through? Blocking/leaving/going NC is not possible at this time, but I plan to in the future.
