2023.03.27 18:38 filmgamegeek IJW: John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Source:
https://www.reeladvice.net/2023/03/john-wick-chapter-4-movie-review.html If there's one thing consistent about the "John Wick" franchise is that it's a guarantee that you'll find yourself with jaws wide open as you are bombarded with action sequences and fights like you've never seen before. The consistency with hit after hit (no pun intended) is an astounding feat and the 4th film takes this world-building, off-the-charts body-count, and overall silliness to new heights. And amazingly, this almost 3 hour journey through Wick's reality gels together to create one of the most astounding and outstanding action films we have seen.
When John Wick (Keannu Reeves) decides to get revenge on the High Table, he travels to Morocco and kills The Elder. This has ramifications as The High Table decides to enlist Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård) to stop Wick at all costs and anyone who has been associated with Wick is in grave danger. With the price on his head ever increasing, Wick uncovers a path to defeating The High Table but this will require him to faceoff against powerful enemies across the globe.
If we have one advice while watching "John Wick: Chapter 4" it would be embrace the ridiculousness of what's happening on-screen because this is not about reality but its about pure entertainment. And the Baba Yaga's specialty is to entertain as we all have known him from his past three outings. This 4th film just trumps the previous films in its each unique action set piece, its character and world-building, and its direction. This film will not only impress you with the kill count but how clear these kills are, how beautifully shot and lit each scene is, and how its booming soundtrack makes sure that the thrills aren't for your eyes only.
At almost three hours long, we were seriously scared of becoming bored or desensitized at some point but these never crossed our minds once the first scene rolled. This is the kind of film that just grabs your attention and you won't even notice the minutes tick away. One of the things we noticed was that its pacing was also excellent. It was a relentless barrage of fights but whenever it needed to take a short break it did so in a way that this scenes felt essential in explaining what the heck is happening on-screen. If you expect this film to once again feature Keannu Reeves as the lead character, then you'll be surprised to find out that the supporting cast was as strong if not stronger than John Wick. Critically, the performances from Donnie Yen, Shamier Anderson, and Riya Sawayama meant that the future of this franchise doesn't stop on Wick alone and we're pretty impressed how smoothly this film made sure that its future is secure in one clean sweep. Of course we won't deny that the film has faults. Its story was silly, the plot armor extremely strong for certain characters, and a required viewing of the previous films. But with what it provides and what it achieves, "John Wick: Chapter 4" is a masterclass on how to create an action film that jampacked with it but isn't just about it.

2023.03.27 18:34 PinkityHoe Any tips for my trip to NYC?
My sister [F16] & I [F19] are in the process of planning our trip to New York, but we want to garner advice from people who’s actually from the city.
Right now we have 1700$ to fund it, at first we thought that it were going to be enough for the entire 2 day stay, but decided against it.
We were planning to go to Brooklyn because it seemed surrounded by all of the boroughs, we could cross travel, it’s not really as loud/touristy, & our hotel is there.
Our original layout was:
Transportation - 33$ Metro Card IGN (one night)- 343$ Transport to NY and Back - 760$ (Packing some of our own food)
That would’ve left us 560$ to enjoy Brooklyn & some of Manhattan which doesn’t sound credible at all, And so because of of this we’re picking up summer jobs and moved it back to September for departure.
But what I post in this sub for is details on New York City from a human-resident point of view not from a superficial, soulless ad or a dramatic movie. What are things to do? Is it safe? & is Seinfeld a good show to watch to see the NYC Culture.
Thank you in advance!

2023.03.27 18:20 ego_shiner Dreamed an entire TV show in 2 parts
So I've been getting into recording my dreams for various reasons, in particular reading the works of Jeremy Taylor on group dream work inspired me quite a bit. I don't have an irl group to share with though so I figure this might be the next best thing. Last night I had a dream which actually was the ending to another dream I had forgotten about. Bits of the first dream came back to me as a result of the ending, although the whole thing is pretty fragmented. The whole thing was experienced pretty indirectly, like I was watching a tv show but also sort of identified with the protagonist. This is pretty common for my dreams I find, they often have odd 4th wall breaking framing devices like reading a newspaper that gives context for what's about to happen in the dream narrative.
Anyway the overall plot of this show was about a man who keeps accidentally killing his lovers. He meets them one by one, as a viewer I end up "falling in love" with the various qualities of each of them and then for whatever reason the tragedy unfolds. This might sound familiar to anyone who's watched the Netflix series You, and yeah it's pretty much the same plot as that show just with more of a sexy slick, cosmopolitan tone more reminiscent of movies from the 90s. It also involved a lot of real actors from that era. The protag was a young John Cusack, and one of the women was played by the lady who portrayed Jean Gray in the original X men movies. Unfortunately I remember very little of the actual plot, but I remember some of the love interests' personalities. The red haired woman was the dangerous lover always chasing a thrill. There was a meek blonde woman who wore geeky glasses and was more of a pure victim archetype. Finally there was a mixed-race woman who ends up getting away safely and working on a trainyard or a boat or something, planning with some other women to catch the killer.
I remember a bit more from the followup dream from last night: John Cusack is haunted by guilt, riding trains around the city as a movie protagonist does. There are cuts to the police trying to find the mystery killer, but nobody knows anything about him. Gradually we begin to draw into a nested dream sequence in his own mind. There's quite a visually beautiful scene of him reuniting with the red-haired woman in an apartment overlooking the city at night. She kind of spider walks backwards onto the bed (hard to describe but it came off quirky/sexy rather than creepy lol) while the protag stands at the side looking down affectionately but forlorn. In the next dream scene he is riding the bus with the glasses girl and other victims. They talk, but he seems less interested. The scene ends with him somewhat sadistically jumping at her, causing her to flinch in fear from her killer. The final revelation of the dream, here's where it gets real weird, is that somehow he caused her to give birth to a half-deer man who is living in the woods. The final revelation of the narrative is that this somewhat pitiful creature is the only one who knows the killer's true name (this as far as I can remember is the only supernatural or somewhat fantastical element in the entire narrative. It also stands out as I have been kind of fixated on deer symbolism/experiencing synchronicities. Just yesterday I saw a family of over ten deer running together. I was crossing train tracks and one of the adolescents briefly separated from the group and came within 10 feet of me. Not to get all weird but seems worth mentioning lol)
It's difficult to remember much more as both dreams had the quality of "compressed time". As the title suggests it was as though I were watching an entire 5 season tv series in the span of 2 short dreams, so only certain themes and details, and an overall "aesthetic" really made their way out. Curious to hear some peoples' thoughts though! Taylor's books recommend an "if it were my dream what would I think?" framing when it comes to dream interpretation, so feel free to answer using that angle, or just any potential meanings that jump to mind.

2023.03.27 18:13 tigerora My psychosis story
I was born a hopeless romantic, I loved everything to do with romances but was too scared to ever do anything with those feelings, I couldn’t ever find myself thinking that I liked anyone enough to date them, or they didn’t like me enough either. I grew up binging Disney and romantic movies or tv shows, anime, etc. I was waiting for my own prince basically to sweep me off my feet.
Someone to change my mind about not liking anyone, etc. Eventually I turned 22 and ended up having this crush on this younger boy who ended up taking my virginity only to break my heart by choosing another girl.
I was sad but not devastated, I was okay, but typically when I was sad I tended to try to smoke weed or use other substances.
One night while I was feeling out this rejection I ended up taking magic mushrooms and weed, going to sleep right after.
Needless to say, I woke up hallucinating a man from work who was taken, he had hit on me, and in my hallucinations he said he loved me.
I was entirely convinced that these visions were memories, so I decided to message him saying I felt the same. This guy responded and told me he didn’t know what I was talking about… which confused me… what had I seen in my mind then, what did I “remember?”
The voice kept on, only to become louder and more intense, at first loving and desperate to be together with me, only to become violent and angry with me. He would hit me in my visions, insult me, and put me down every day… I tried to escape him but he wouldn’t stop, instead, I turned and faced him and began to beg him, follow, and listen to him to get him to stop… he told me he was Lucifer himself, and that if I wanted to escape pain I would have to follow. So I did, out of fear. I was a Satanist for a good chunk of time just trying not to get hurt, but it didn’t work, he turned out to treat me badly anyhow and would still have violent outbursts (the voice).
Eventually, through conversations, logic, and emotionally moving him, I was able to change the perspective of the voice, making Lucifer in my mind become good to me and treat me well. That was the better half of my Satanist days, but he and I concurred once we had mutual respect that he wasn’t God and that there was a higher power even above him, finally he let go of this power hungry attitude that controlled him, and he went on to see the light, converting even back as a follower of Christ. I along with him changed back as a follower since I no longer had the need to fear him.
In the end I lost his voice once this happened, and I am all better now but yet still healing as subtly there are various voices that pop up occasionally but they’re very quiet and hushed and mean nothing to me, they’re distanced and fading everyday.
I did have good times with this presence whom I believe to be a spirit of some kind and I honestly think I was able to change and save him from hell too, as well as myself, and thanks to Gods forgiving nature we were able to redeem ourselves through Christ and His sacrifice on the cross. So although I don’t hear the voice of this spirit anymore, I know one day I’ll see him again in the afterlife, where I’ll be happy to have met him in my days on earth… before he left, he told me he would be with me on earth, and that he loved me. He said he’d go back in time and be born human again just to be my romantic interest, to this day I don’t know whether or not that’s true but I feel in my heart that he was just miserable being bad, and that he’s happy now, wherever he is. Whether or not all this is true, legitimate or possible, I don’t know, but it’s what I believed while healing from my psychosis and stuff.
Now, I’m happier than ever, for him, and for myself as well. I do think he was just not in the right mind, like me, but now I can say that we both are, wherever he may be if he was living and alive somewhere out there.
In a way I miss him, but I know it’s better to live here now and in the moment. So I’m happy for him and for me, and I’m glad my mental health is better these days!

2023.03.27 17:55 ThrowRA_beekind My (25F) Fiance (28M) crossed a lot of my boundaries and I’m not sure what to do.
I have been with my partner for just over 5 years now (I’m going to call him August). I apologize if this is too long or worded poorly, this is my first reddit post ever.
The COVID era hit our relationship hard like it did for many other people, he lost his job and still hasn’t gotten a new one, we both graduated from school so I moved us across the country for graduate school, I’ve been diagnosed with some medical conditions, and more. Well, these medical conditions have greatly affected my sex drive and the positions I can use. The stress of being the sole breadwinner and graduate school has also affected my drive. So unlike when we first got together and were having sex all the time, it's more intermittent now (once every week or two, maybe further in between if I’m having a flare-up). This has been really hard on August because he has a very high sex drive and uses sex as his main emotion/ego regulator. We’ve had a lot of conversations about this and we have both been trying to do what we can to make things as best as we for the other. Overall I did not think that this was weakening our relationship because I viewed it as a routine relationship problem, after being with someone for a while I’ve heard a lot of people go through a point of reconfiguring their sex lives and drives. Apparently I was wrong though because although August has told me for three years that all is well I found last night that it definitely was not for him.
Yesterday morning we had fantastic, multiple rounds, kinky, and intimate sex. I was feeling so rock solid about our relationship because it felt like we really needed that. Afterward, he took a nap and I went out to watch tv and play on my phone. I went on his phone (we have a very open door policy on our phones) to download an app to send myself gifts because I had used all of my tokens (we have also done this in the past for each other as well). When the text message directed me to his browser I discovered that onlyfans was up, now I don’t have a problem with the site or those that use it but we had discussed previously in the relationship that we weren’t going to use it because porn is free and we were broke. So while I have been paying for everything, and I mean everything, for the past 2.5 years he had used whatever money he did have on subscriptions to onlyfans and lied about it (we have had several conversations where we debated on making an account for either of us to see if it could help fill in the gaps of my paychecks but ultimately we decided that we were not comfortable with it and it was in those conversations that we both confirmed our stance on one of us having an account to subscribe to others). Boundary number 1 crossed.
While being a bit peeved but pretty understanding of it if that was everything, I checked out his Reddit because I did not have one of my own until now. I discovered 6 different accounts, all except his daily one were only subscribed to NSWF subs and all had active sexting conversations in the chats. He was swapping photos and sharing intimate sex life details on top of the sexting. We live in the 21st century where both of us are bisexual, not confident in ourselves, and broke- we have laid out some ground rules on what cheating is- flirting with people in public is not, people buying us drinks is not, but physical relations are, sexting is, etc. So boundary 2 is crossed.
When I discovered all of this, I put his phone down afraid of what else I would find. I jumped in the shower needing to feel something because I had gone completely numb. I stood there spaced out until the water turned cold. I had errands I had to run so I went to get dressed and woke him up in the process. He joined me on my errands as we originally planned but he could tell something was up. By the time we got to the parking lot, I was sobbing after telling him everything I had found and him confirming in a single sentence that it was all true and accurate. He told me that he’s been so depressed and feeling like a waste of space due to being unemployed and beaten down by our parents because of that fact that he was originally just looking for an ego boost, that he just wanted to feel desirable and that it had spiraled from there. He had not only done what I found but also had a second Instagram account to follow onlyfans accounts, he would sext in bed next to me while I was asleep, and had even not had sex with me a few times because of role-play he was having with a stranger to where he wasn’t allowed to cum for a week.
The crazy thing for me as I think about all of it though is by the end of the errands things felt back to normal. After the long talk in the parking lot where we aired everything out and he swore to stop it all, I distracted myself with the first errand but by the second it did not feel like I was having to distract myself, I just didn’t think about it and was having a good time. We went out for dinner and a movie, came home and played games together, just felt like I had never found it. I am obviously very upset about everything I had found but part of me understands. I know its been really difficult for him and when things get hard he uses sex to lift himself up while I shut down on sex. He has never stopped being emotionally there for me and is very attentive. While we haven’t been able to go on dates because of the financial situation we still have made sure to set apart times quite often to do home dates and spend time together in ways outside of the daily routine. I’ve never seen sex as a crucial aspect of life so am I tricking myself to believe that this isn’t a huge deal? Am just burying it so things can go back to normal? Am I letting another man get away with mistreating me because I love him? What are the next steps if I do want to forgive him? I’ve never been in a situation like this and am just so overwhelmed with what I should do or think.
TLDR: My fiance crossed some of my boundaries by having online sexual interactions with strangers.

2023.03.27 17:00 yellowpotatobus Going back to play Secret of Evermore for the SNES
These past few years I've taken up quite an interest in retro-gaming and replaying the games that I grew up with. And honestly, it's the most fun I've had with gaming in quite some time. Now if you'll let me, I'd like talk about one I just completed, Secret of Evermore.
I'm going to put my thoughts into 3 major categories. The first is sentimentality: a lot of retro-gaming has to do with nostalgia, and I feel like a quick personal story on the game vs a wiki background of the game is more appropriate for retrogames. Then a section for Pros, and a section for Cons.
Personal
I first played Secret of Evermore in 6th grade, back in mid/late 90s. Most of my gaming experience was with platform, action and arcade games. I didn't have any gaming magazines and I my knowledge was fairly limited. A couple friends of mine started to get me into JRPGs and into other types of games. One of the games he let me borrow was Secret of Evermore. I played this one way before I knew anything about Secret of Mana (and I didn't play that one until I was closer to High School when I snagged a copy of that game for myself). I was instantly hooked. I remember the game really capturing my imagination at the time. I loved that it had different time periods. I remember thinking that the marketplace in Nobilia was MASSIVE and was lost in it all day. I remember the world in that game feeling so very alive and lived in. The game influenced my play outside where I pretended to rule over my own Evermore kingdom (with its own marketplace too of course). Since I borrowed the game, when I eventually finished it I gave it back. That was the last time I played it, well over 25yrs ago. It's a game that crosses my mind every so often. It's not a game that is mentioned a lot with the SNES. But it's one I've wanted to replay for a long time.
After just finishing it, I would say it was worth playing through again. The game gave me such a feeling of the warm fuzzies. Parts of the game I completely forgot about, and I certainly unlocked a whole lot of memories too. The nostalgia was really strong, and I believe its genuinely a good game. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. I'll get to that shortly.
Pros
- The atmosphere and game world - This is top notch. The game just oozes a certain vibe. It's a very dark game (literally its hard to see sometimes), but it has a fantastic variety of environments. There's some humor, puns, a sense of dangeunease at times, all wrapped up in an intriguing dark fantasy.
- Graphics - absolutely great. The sprite work is rich and detailed. A great looking game all around.
- Music/Sound fx - There's some bangers in here
- Plot/Story/Characters - This is pretty good as well. It's no FF6, but I didn't expect it to be. It's a straightforward adventure. You take a typical everyday movie loving kid, throw a weapon in his hands and he and his dog become murder machines lol. It's very charming, doesn't take itself too seriously and moves at a good pace. It doesn't overstay its welcome and I completed it all in about 16 hours total. This is something I appreciate more and more as I get older.
- Combat - This is a mixed bag. While I enjoy Mana style combat, there was something a little off with this. I think the hit-detection gets confused sometimes, so you'll miss hits alot (not rng "misses", but just straight up missing the target). The elements are all there. The combat is engaging and satisfying enough, but it's just not really used to its full potential. Ultimately, it was fun to play tho.
- Difficulty - It feels balanced. It was never overly difficult. The game had some easy spots and bosses. Ironically, the first boss in the game is most difficult by far. The final boss could be challenging by sheer amount of HP, but you should be so loaded up with spells, lvl 3 weapons, and bazooka ammo - that as long as you watch your health you'll be fine.
Cons
- Level Design - While the environments look great, the actual level design was getting on my nerves a bit. Every environment was a maze. And I mean every single one. I don't mind mazes when dungeon crawling, and this game was essentially one big dungeon crawl with a few towns sprinkled in, but it was too much. No level had straightforward parts. Some levels had areas off map so you just had to push random directions to get thru the black void. Maze after maze after maze. It was exhausting and I took frequent breaks between play sessions. I wish there were more linear areas, maybe some actual puzzles in the game vs another maze.
- Combat - I said it was mixed. There is a grind to this game. Like the Mana games you can level up your weapons. The higher the level, the longer you can charge your attack, the stronger the attack. You have 3 styles of weapons and each weapon can charge to level 3. Except each new weapon you get, you start from 0 and have to grind up the weapon level again. You get new weapons are a pretty regular frequency, so you are just constantly grinding up the weapons. I didn't bother. Once I had the spear I just stuck with it. I never bothered grinding up the other weapons, there was no need to. My old spear at lvl3 is much stronger than the new sword I got. And by the time I get the sword up to lvl2, I have a new axe. so on and so forth
- What more grinding? The magic system has the same grind as the weapons, and I can't figure out which is worse. You have this alchemy system, which in theory is great, where you need to either find and/or buy the ingredients needed for each spell. You get new spells with relative frequency. You have attacks, heals, buffs, etc. All good stuff. However in order for any spell to be useful, you have to grind its levels up just like the weapons. BUT you get new spells all the time. I felt like there was never a reason to use these new and powerful end-game spells, when the spells i have from early-game are level 4/5+ and do 4x the amount of damage the new lvl 1 spell does. You would have to kill hundreds of enemies with these spells to get it up to a decent level. Why bother? All you need is Crush and Heal. That's what I used most frequently, which leveled them up the most, which caused me to use those more in an endless cycle. I wish the spells didn't level at all. So when you got a new powerful spell, it's actually stronger than the first few spells I got in the beginning of the game.
- Did I mention there is a grind? In order to level up a weapon or spell, that item needs to make the killing blow. Not just use it, but make the killing blow with it. Hit it with a spell and finish it off with a weapon - weapon gets credit. Hit it with your weapon, spell, then your dog kills it - the dog gets the credit. This is just stupid. I spent all my time focused on leveling my weapons through the game (and remember I'm getting new weapons pretty frequently), that I never really bothered leveling up my spells. I didn't want to kill-steal from myself. I wanted to use these spells more, I really do, but I'm not going to grind it out. I'm just not. Especially since the game isn't that difficult, so there's no need to. Side note: the spells cause the enemies to stop in place for a bit (some enemies are really fast and hard to hit). I would often use spells to stop the enemies in place, so I could hit them with a charged weapon.
Final Words
Secret of Evermore flys a little bit under the radar, but it is an absolute gem. I'm very glad that I took the time to play through it again, and maybe 20yrs from now I'll play it all over again. If you have any interest in SNES action rpgs or Mana style games, then I believe it's absolutely worth playing... just don't mind the grind :).

Also love ⚾️, watching and playing. I am happily married, just looking for a few friends to talk to since irl it’s hard to meet people. I LOVE Japan and anything to do with it, always loved the country and am a big Japan nerd. I wouldn’t be called 100 % weeb tho since my interest in Japan goes way beyond anime.
-I was born and raised in Florida and I live in Florida, but I travel for work and I see all 4 seasons.
-Looking for some long term friends. Prefer people that message me be located in Florida, but minimum please be in the US!

2023.03.27 16:30 Blak3Nikos Stop Sleeping On Revenger
I can't think of a better way to end this month than by reviewing my first 2023 anime. A little fun fact about this series is that one of the head writers is none other than Urobuchi Gen. Writer of Fate/Zero, creator of Magica Madoka, Psycho Pass (main writing credit for season 1 and the movie) , and yours and mine favorite eldritch visual novel: Saya no Uta. However I still gotta wonder how this project that he decided to take on turn out now that all of the episodes are available. Fingers cross that it turns out really well. Here is my review of Revenger.
"Raizo Kurima is a hitman working for the organization Revengers, which takes revenge on behalf those who have no power. The group works at the "Ribenjiya" store that acts as a general store on the outside, while hiding the Revengers organization beneath the surface. Kurima's coworkers include a physician with destructive impulses, a beautiful and androgynous young man who is both cruel and innocent, a gambler who loves money and alcohol, and an intelligent lacquer craftsman. The five men start to build a strange friendship through working together." (Info by Wiki)
Folks I am absolutely pissed off. Not at Revenger this series turn out to be an absolute banger. No my main issue is that it's not getting a lot of attention that it truly deserves. I only saw some people talking about this on YouTube or social media. The only notable anime content creator that actually mention it's existences was Mother's Basement during he's list of Winter 2023 that he was checking out. However if you go to he's comment section for both top and recent. You don't even see anyone talking about the show or any interest in checking it out. An if by chance there are it's probably just a few that's buried underneath the popular or less notable series people want to watch or watched (depends on the number of episodes the content last.) An the overall rating it got from My Anime List (MAL) doesn't even do justice for this short series. So if I have to be one of the few people to talk about how amazing this anime is. So be it.
One of the reason why I love the series would have to be the first episode. Just like any great anime ever this episode alone immediately captured my attention and persuaded me to keep on watching until there was nothing left to watch. It starts off with our main protagonist accomplishing he's task of assassinating he's target (whom he learned is one of the key people behind the notorious illegal drug trade (Opium.) The target that he took down? Was none other than he's fiancée's father in law. After escaping into the night he's father in law bit down a golden coin as he's last act on Earth before fully succumbing to he's own wound. Later a mysterious stranger comes across he's corpse and picks up the bloody bitten golden coin. We see this stranger encounter our main protagonist lying near a stream. He learns that the reason the protagonist is staying there instead of back home is because he is too ashamed to face the love of he's life after what he had done. After conversing with the mysterious stranger he then goes to he's employer to tell him that the job was accomplish, but before he could do that he's employer's minions encounters Raizo on the way there. Revealing that he's father in law was never involve with the drug trade, but was in the way. An now that he's taken care of the only task left is to assassinate our protag. Raizo quickly commits a dangerous act by jumping off a cliff (after hearing a voice that ask him to do this if he wanted to live.)
He later on wakes up alive, but injured in a unknown room with the stranger and a couple of other guys who we learn are a group of assassins hired by he's late father in law to take out the man responsible for he's hit. Wanting revenge after being deceived by he's employer. He draws out a map for the assassins so that way they can accomplish their goal in the best strategized way. Later that night after taking out all of the henchmen with little to no issues. The stranger aka the leader arrives at the boss' room only to learn that he's not there. It turns out Raizo left out an important part of the map of he's former employer's mansion on purpose just so he can be the one to assassinate himself (an yes the way how he takes him out is pretty cool.) After accomplishing he's task he goes out and seeks redemption from he's beloved. Unfortunately before he could even explain he's actions. He finds he's love already left this world. Little did the assassins and Raizo know that this was just the beginning of their Opium trouble.
The second reason why I love the series would have to be who are the Revengers. The Revengers as you know are a group of individual killers who take on the quest of those who seek vengeance upon those who have done them wrong. They do this by find a golden coin, bite down on it and send it to someone who is connected to them (usual the Chapel whom by the way funds them for their work) or themselves. They usual ask no questions or give no second thought about it. Just go out, accomplish the goal, get paid, and await for their next task. However I want you to keep something in mind. They don't do this for the yen (that's secondary to them.) The whole point to this group is to fulfill the desires of those that need payback, but can't skillfully do it themselves. As long as the goal is accomplish and they employer is in peace then it's good enough for them.
But just who are the Revengers you may probably ask. Well dear reader allow me to introduce my favorite group of men one by one. You have the leader Yuen Usui. Wise, always soft spoken, and the master strategist. He's weapon of choice is using he's skills as maki-e lacquerware artist. Either by sprinkle them in front he's enemy's vision as a distraction or covering their mouth or face with the paper version of said item while saying he's iconic prayer before they met their death. The only way to properly take it off is by flicking it or hitting their face on the ground on hard impact. Teppa Murakami is a former pirate now turned doctor. He always helps out he's patience the best way that he can. Either through regular medicine or through rough chiropractor techniques. He's skills as assassin is either with he's amazing looking giant bow and arrow or wrestling skills. Every time the man shoots he's target. He not only never misses, but the impact of the shot are always gnarly looking and sometimes big like shooting a cannon (Let's just say they'll make any professional archer's jaws completely drop to the floor.) An if you thought that was deadly. Just wait until you see him using he's own strength alone (pray that it never comes down to that option.) Once he gets he's hands on he's opponents he always takes them out by using various submission techniques or that one time where he did a swing (where you take the opponent's legs, starting spinning them around like a record baby, and then throw them to a near by rough area. Soji is the typical sleazy, hot headed, and ever cautious idiot who has a bad gambling addiction. This either leads him to sweet victory or sour failures. Either way he gets drunk in the end. However he shines the most by helping out he's crew by using he's hanafuda cards. "Blake? That's lame. What is he going to do with playing cards? Gamble them to death?" Ha Ha funny. No he uses these sharp cards by throwing them at he's target's vital points. Once they land it's all over for them.
Despite being the youngest member of the Revengers. Nio is actually one of the smartest and cruelest member in the group. He's weapon of choice is either by using he's feminine body as bait for the targets or by using he's kite strings (which are imbedded with small glass shards) to take out his enemies. He can also do this while flying he's kite as well. An last, but never least Raizo Kurima. Using he's dedicated techniques as a samurai. Raizo can be able to take out an opponent usual with a single blow just by cutting their upper body in a sick and wicked fashion. But as cool as that is it's not the sole reason why I like this guy and why I consider him my number 1 favorite. Another reason would have to be he's character development. Through out the show despite living he's life as a Revenger he still can't move past the action he has committed toward he's father in law or not being able save he's fiancée from herself impending doom aka he's biggest regret. The only way he can ever truly move forward is by taking care of this whole Opium problem and the main source who is selling them to the people of Nagasaki. One interesting detail that I like about he's story arc is when he takes up a hobby/side job as an artist. He's most iconic drawings are of he's beloved Yui. Every time you encounter them there are different versions of how sorrowful they all come off. A symbolic way of showing that as long as her problem still exist. She can never truly smile ever again.
The last character that I like would have to be the main antagonist himself. Saimon Shishido is not only one richest man in Nagasaki, has close ties to the Shogunate, and is the owner of the Nagasaki Trade Union, but is secretly the main reason why Opium is sold everywhere. Thanks to he's trade with the English. The reason why he does is more than just for money it's mostly just for he's sick entertainment. Heck the man literally has a mountain of pictures of people completely far gone thanks to the drug themselves. Even when things don't go he's way (thanks to the Revengers) he never lets it get to him at all. He always has a relaxed and soothing composure with a happy smile to top it all off. An that's mostly because he can come up with a lot of ideas that can help both turn things around for him and give him the satisfaction he desires. He's a grade A bastard who you hope gets he's just desserts.
The last few things that I love would have to be the storyline (Revenger honestly has one of the best writing in fiction history. The more you keep indulging in the story. The heavier, darker, and deeper you realize how bad this whole Opium rabbit hole goes. Especially certain people involved in it. An the way how the production crew ends the series is so satisfying it will leave you both completely hyped and thankful you encountered this gem.) The music (It's pretty good though my favorites would have to be the Opening and Closing credits. The opening gets you excited with what your going to witness next from this show thanks to it's electronic pop bop. As for it's ending it's beautiful soothing lyrics and melody will not only comfort your soul, but also leave you happy and eager to see more from this series.) The action scenes (If your into very bloody and graphic content, then this show will help satisfy your hunger. One of my favorites would have to be this one scene from the finale that had me screaming with furious ecstasy.) The Japanese voice acting (I don't really give these a lot of love like how I should and starting today I want to correct that problem by being more consistent. Anywho three of my favorite VA's would have to be Teppa's VA Takeuchi Shunsuke, Saimon's VA Okamoto Nobuhiko, and Yui's VA Yumi Hara (most notable for voicing Yumi from Senran Kagura, Albedo from Overlord, and Kazumi Mishima from Tekken 7.) Even though he's one year younger than me. Takeuchi has a great ability to sound like he's in he's late 30's to early or mid 40's. I didn't even know this until I looked it up yesterday how old he was.
There are two reasons why I love Okamoto's voice performance as Saimon. One is because his voice is so soothing it makes you feel pissed off and relax at that same time. The 2nd reason is the most shocking. To those who don't know this beautiful voice is the same one who also voices Midorya's rival/best friend Bakugo. Yeah I know. I wish I was kidding, but I'm not. If you don't believe me. Go look it up yourself. But out of all the voice actors I have to give a HUGE round of applause to Yumi. Despite only performing for three episodes. She has done a stunning job with her performance. I can't say fully why except this. If you didn't care about Yui before in the beginning to middle half of the series. Hara-san will MAKE you care when you get to episode eleven.) Lastly the artwork and animation (Both lovely and cool. Beautiful because of the designs of the main characters and background (including the OP and ED.) Cool because of the sick animation of the action scenes.)
In conclusion Revenger is an underrated banger that deserves to be a contender of anime of the year. I hope that after reading this review you will at least give this series a chance if not the first episode. I don't really encounter gems like these a lot. Yet when I do I always do my upmost best to elaborate why I love them and why you should to. An if you think I'm bull when I say this. It's been since Akiba's Maid War aka the last week of January since I encountered something overlooked. So if you are fan of very graphic content and want to see assassination at one of it's finest with a great story to boot. Please, don't sleep on this anime. Give it a chance. You may never know if you love it. With that said I'm giving Revenger a 10/10, let me know what you think in the comments.

2023.03.27 16:29 Ok-Activity1 How to Get Into My Boyfriend's WhatsApp without Access to His Phone
How to hire a hacker to hack someone's WhatsApp account
We all know how this starts from the beginning of course. Let’s learn how to hack a WhatsApp account. WhatsApp is a cross-platform instant messaging application that allows users to chat, text, share media, for instance, videos and voice messages with individuals or groups. Since its launch in 2009, it has quickly become the most globally popular messaging app with over 1.5 billion monthly active users. The app was created by Brian Acton and Jan Kuom, however, it is presently owned by Facebook.
NB: Learning how to hire a hacker to hack someone's WhatsApp account is strictly for educational purpose. for more information contact at [Spycityhaclord](mailto:
[email protected])
Features of WhatsApp · Uses an Internet connection to send messages or texts
· Media can be shared between individuals and group chats
· Free voice and video calls
· Users can seamlessly sync their chats to their computers, iPad or Android tablets with Whatsapp Web
· Users may record voice messages
· Users can send documents, spreadsheets, and slideshows without the hustle of file-sharing apps or emails.
· Messages and calls are encrypted
· Built-in camera for capturing memorable moments
· Users can share their location in real-time.
First-time users create an account using their email address and phone number for verification.
How Secure is Whatsapp? How to Hack a Whatsapp Account. In light of the end-to-end encryption provided by the app, chats and calls are encrypted ensuring that no third parties can read the messages or listen to them. This is because the messages are secured with a lock, thus only you and the recipient have the special key needed to read and unlock them. Not to mention, this happens automatically meaning there’s no need to turn on the settings or set up secret chats. Additionally, one can turn on the two-factor authentication which adds an additional layer of security making it harder for an attacker to gain access. All this can be made redundant if you know how to hack a Whatsapp Account.
Nonetheless, Whatsapp is still vulnerable to attacks from hackers. Since backed up chats are not protected by the end-to-end encryption, an attacker could access old chats if they hack into a user’s cloud storage account.
Methods How to Hack a Whatsapp Account 1. Phishing This is a fraudulent attempt used by hackers to obtain sensitive information such as login details like usernames and passwords. Whatsapp phishing involves extracting the QR Code from Whatsapp Web then displaying it on a new page. If the victim scans the code using Whatsapp it will grab the credentials from the web client and save them in a file. You can use these credentials to log yourself in as the person who scanned the QR code. The phishing program particularly uses node.js and socket.io for the website and selenium responsible for scripting browsers that communicate with the Whatsapp web client. To begin with, the program starts at Http and a socket.io server. If a new client connects to socket.io, the application will request a selenium instance to start a new browser and connect to web.whatsapp.com. Afterward, it will fetch the QR code data and send it to the client via the web socket connection. The client javascript then shows the QR code to the user. When the QR code gets scanned Whatsapp will authenticate the selenium controlled browser and store some tokens in the local storage and document cookie. Data is extracted then saved into a text file.
2. Use Keyloggers Moreover, hackers may also use keylogger applications to hack into a WhatsApp account. A keylogger is a software program that records every keystroke that a targeted user types into their mobile device. It does this by secretly monitoring the victim’s input and keeping a log of all keys that are pressed then saves the data for later use. In this case, when your target user opens WhatsApp in his or her phone, the keylogger collects all the information they type into the device and saves it for you. There are several types of keyloggers available only on the web including mSpy and iKey monitor.
3. Using MAC Spoofing This technique involves changing the factory assigned Media Access Control address of a specific network interface on a networked device. Besides being completely free, it does not require a lot of technical expertise. The basic requirements for accomplishing are the victims MAC address and the following steps:
· STEP 1: Completely uninstall your personal WhatsApp account from your device. You can still re-install WhatsApp later after you are done with this process.
- STEP 2: Secretly get access to your victim’s phone to find the MAC address. It is essential to note that the address is made of 12 characters, but you can easily find it using the following methods depending on the device.
o For
Android devices go to Settings > About phone > Status > Wi-Fi MAC address
o For
Windows phones go to Settings > About > More info > MAC address
o For
iPhone devices go to Settings > General > About > Wi-Fi address
o For
BlackBerry go to Options > Device > Device and Status info > WLAN MAC
- STEP 3: Locate your own MAC address using the same procedure indicated above that matches your device then keep it in a secure place for later use.
- STEP 4: Enter the victim’s MAC address into your device. This is procedure is called spoofing which informs WhatsApp that you are trying to log into your account when on the other hand you are gaining access to your targeted victim’s account on your phone.
- STEP 5: Next, download and install specific MAC spoofing apps depending on the type of device that you are using. If you have an iPhone use WifiSpoof or Mac Daddy X, for Android devices use Terminal Emulator or BusyBox. Enter the “IP link show” in the terminal and then find the interface with your MAC address.
- STEP 6: Download and reinstall WhatsApp on your phone again. After you reinstall the app, you will need to configure it using your target victim’s phone number, which will thereby permit you to access his or her messages and other content.
- STEP 7: Once you enter the victim’s phone number, the real owner of the account will receive a confirmation code to verify that this new phone belongs to them. Fortunately, you have the phone close to you, so you’ll just check the verification code and enter it to confirm. After this, you will have complete access to a target victim’s WhatsApp account. Do not forget to delete the verification code from the target’s phone before giving it back.
- STEP 8: Lastly, you will need to reset your MAC address after you’ve gained access to your victim’s phone. Just follow the same process you used initially in the third step to change your MAC address and restore your mobile phone.
- Mobile Phone Hacking
Mobile phone hacking and monitoring allow you to fully keep track of every activity of the target device. You can easily see the details of every communication that is all calls and text messages (incoming, outgoing, deleted). In addition to this, one may view internet history activities as well as WhatsApp activities. In short, everything will easily be hacked and shared on the app control panel. A few examples of mobile spying apps include: Xyzzy, TruthSpy, and Spybubble.
5. SS7 Attack SS7 which stands for Signaling System 7 is an international telecommunications standard that defines how the public switched telephone network (PSTN) exchanges information over a digital signaling network. Furthermore, it performs number translation, prepaid billing, short message service (SMS), among other mass-market services. Hackers exploit the
SS7 vulnerability by tricking the telecom network into believing the attacker’s phone has the same number as the victim’s phone. Once the network has been fooled, the hacker can spy on the legitimate WhatsApp user by creating a new WhatsApp using a secret code. Consequently, the attacker now controls the account, including the ability to send and receive messages. Even more terrifying is the fact that the hacker has the ability to send messages on behalf of the victim, and read confidential messages intended for the victim without ever having to try to break strong end-to-end encryption protocols.
6. Session Hijacking This is the act of taking control of a user’s valid computer session to gain unauthorized access to information or services after successfully obtaining the victim’s session ID. Session hijacking is highly likely when using the WhatsApp web version. Unlike other messaging websites, WhatsApp does notify users in case there is a second active session. This makes using this method of how to hack a WhatsApp account very doable. Regardless, most users do not take note of this, therefore, giving the attacker access to all the information in the attacked WhatsApp account until the victim chooses an option to close the second active session from their computer.
7. Using Social Engineering Contrary to other hacking techniques, hackers do not break into your device or system using any special kind of malware. Instead, they do it by extracting sensitive information by fooling you in some way. They then use this information against you by hacking into your system and stealing personal and valuable data. Most times they bait users online through promotional advertisements for offering gifts, free music or movie downloads then ask for the individual’s WhatsApp contact.
8. Use of a WhatsApp Hack Tool Various hacking tools have been designed to spy on WhatsApp anonymously. A good example is one of our software which is available for sale. It has easy-to-use features that are useful for hacking into any WhatsApp account on another mobile device. It is beneficial on both Android and iPhone devices.
The app was created by a group of coding professionals after they successfully mended a loophole detected in the WhatsApp security database. The hackers developed and inserted an undetectable” worm” into the system which allows the hack tool to connect to every account and steal important data like chat logs and calls. Some key features:
· A free two-day trial
· Easy to use
· Hack is undetected
· Fast
· GPS location of the device that you’re targeting
· Call control and voice recording
· Direct access to messages, and other media on the device.
· Unlimited professional support
· Works perfectly with both mobile devices and desktop operating systems
· All countries are supported
9. DNS Spoofing This is a form of computer security hacking in which a user is forced to use a fake website disguised to look like a real one, to divert traffic or steal personal credentials from the users. It can go undetected for a long period. Once a human language is entered on the computer, a DNS Server finds the actual IP address then directs the request from the user’s browser to the actual machine based on the IP address. Ultimately, hackers use DNS Spoofing to hijack the actual WhatsApp website address and redirects it to another IP address. As a result, the victim’s personal information can be compromised.
- Sidejacking With Firesheep
Firesheep only works when the attacker and victim are on the same connection. It is carried out when an attacker gets a hold of a user’s cookie which is not encrypted hence vulnerable. This gives the hacker access to the user’s website. It is mostly done on open, wireless public networks. It is relatively similar to https hijacking.
Various ways in which one can avoid being a victim:
· Do not use unsupported versions of WhatsApp for example GBWhatsApp
· Ensure your WhatsApp messages do not back up to Google Drive or iCloud
· Enable the two-factor authentication for extra login security settings like entering a password or answering a security question
· Do not use public and insecure Wi-Fi access points
· Do not share any personal information especially identification details and phone numbers
· Block installation of applications from unknown sources
· It’s essential to protect your WhatsApp with a lock app to safeguard your account from unsolicited users
· In case your phone is lost or stolen, make sure your SIM card is locked and WhatsApp deactivated through your network provider
· Ensure to log out of WhatsApp Web from your browser
· Watch out for scams; WhatsApp does not send emails unless you first contacted them requesting for help
· Avoid suspicious links. Use

2023.03.27 16:02 sashahahaha4 F4A PLAYING M. ANGSTY, SLICE OF LIFE ROLEPLAY PLOTS + Any Plots you'd like to try 🌸
Hey,
My name is Belle and I am 21 years old. I have been roleplaying for about 3 years now and have enjoyed doing so. So, I have a few plots in mind that I'd love to try:
Victorian Era (1890s- 1900s)- Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion inspired plot: My Character has turned old enough to get married and is old enough to be open to being courted by prospective grooms. Your character maybe someone older than my character and is also looking for someone to settle down with (much against his own will but is doing so for his aging father). Maybe we have had a tumultuous past which ended with you leaving me back for war and now you are back. Or my character might be pining after your character while your character is still not over his past love. Maybe both out characters are stubborn while pining for one another and in the process hurt each other as well. I have many ideas around this plot and you can add more to it as well!
50s Hollywood Starlet and Star- I am a new entrant in Hollywood on having done small roles but now I have landed a role in a big budget movie with you. Maybe you have the reputation of being a womanizer and now our paths have crossed. It can have loads of slowburn romance, angsty stuff. Loads of things that can be added.
Harry Potter- Tom Riddle, Draco Malfoy or Cedric Diggers
Stranger Things - Eddie Munson, Billy Hargrove, Steve Harrington
Lastly, I am open to hearing your ideas- like your craziest ideas too haha. So, if you see something you like or have something you have always wanted to try- then do reach out and hopefully we'll come up with something we both love!
Thanks and take care! ❤

2023.03.27 15:33 Bladeocity_ 22 [M4F] - Virginia, USA/Anywhere - Looking for My Player 2 To Spend Those Long Cozy Gaming Nights With❣️ 🎮
I've only posted on this subreddit a few times before and I have been going back and forth on it for a long while now. I think maybe it's because of the fact that if I did, I would be fully admitting to myself just how lonely I actually am. But there's really no point in trying to mask and run away from the glaring truth, so, here I am again. Taa-daah!
As most people on here are, or I assume, given the context of the subreddit, I am a person who's unfortunately lived the forever alone lifestyle, well, for most of my life. The last person I was close with was way back in the 6th grade (I'm a fourth year in college), and the closest I've had since then was those types of friends that would talk and hang out with you during class time, but the second the bell rings, instant transmission, they gone now. And if we're talking about my love life, well, let's just say the fact that I still haven't had my first kiss yet, should paint a good picture (or lack thereof I suppose) of that.
But I'm not trying to make this some sort of pity party for me, but rather to shed some background as to what I hope, fingers criss crossed, twisting and turning, and looping around each other, for what I want to potentially get out of this. Of course, having a girlfriend would be spectacular, but the second part in the word "girlfriend" is just as important, if not even more so. I'm tired of getting up everyday, doing college work, video editing (small time Youtuber), watching YouTube and playing video games, going to work (if I have a job at a given time if I'm not focusing on university), and going to bed, and rinse and repeat all alone.
I want that to change. I want to spend time watching stupid things with someone, having my butt kicked in Smash even though I've been playing it for years, arguing over which anime opening is better than another for no reason other than it being a means to spend time hearing each other's voice. To go out dates, to laugh, to explore, to cuddle, to do the things that come after that if you catch my drift (or technically before the cuddling, or both), and so much more. But every attempt I made well ehhhhh, well its led me to here.
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a little bit of description about me 😁:
- 22 years old, though that one is probably already known given the title of this post
- Black, 6 foot 1 inches, and real skinny (119 pounds), with black hair and glasses (no facial hair and no body hair to speak of; I guess I can say I'm like semi-femboyish)
- Don't do drugs, don't have any STDs, don't drink, don't actively smoke, but have before, and are okay if you do so, but I do indeed vape, which isn't really a problem to most people, but figured I should still mention it
- Do have 1 tattoo, just in case that's a thing you may care about. It's a Kingdom Hearts heartless and keyblade tattoo where my heart is.
https://imgur.com/a/KDvNYqx (A few more face pics are avaliable in the link provided)
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
My hobbies and interests ❤:
- Literally all things gaming 🎮. And no, I'm not talking 2K or Fortnite or COD or whatever, but JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, platformers like Crash Bandicoot and definetly Sonic the Hedgehog, adventure games like Zelda, etc. I'm open to pretty much all genres and my favorites include Mirror's Edge, Shadow the Colossus, No More Heroes, Asura's Wrath, etc. So kind of a jack of all trades I like to think
- Love anime, and like video games, I'm open to all genres but there's definitely ones I prefer more than others (mostly don't watch a whole lot slice of life, and seinen type shows). Favorites include Fate, Neon Genesis, Konosuba, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Chainsaw Man, etc
- Love movies 🎬 but haven't been watching as much as I'd like to, but hey, only so much free time in the world. But I'm one of those people that likes to put on subtitles and rewind a lot, and I know that can be quite annoying so....I'll try not too? 😅
- Enjoy video editing for my channel, and watching YouTube mostly centered around gaming and anime content. I love listening to music, but once again, my library consists of mostly just anime and video game OSTs (I am a simple guy I suppose)
- And this is a weird one to end off on, but since this is a dating subreddit, I suppose it should be said, I am very sub oriented, and have a high libido, but I am also very very open minded, and won't shame you if you have a particular unusual fascination with something most wouldn't find attractive.
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
I feel like a bit of an ass writing this next part, as if I'm placing some kind of order on what kind of people I accept or don't accept, and that is not my intention in the slightest, but there are things that I am looking for in a person, just so I know that we can get along quite well, instead of me ending up talking to someone I have very little likelihood of jiving with. I don't waste anyone's time, including whoever is reading this.
Some of the things I'm looking for 🔍:
- A gamer, and I mean more than just Animal Crossing and Just Dance, like an ACTUAL actual gamer. We don't need to play the same type of games, and like I said before, I'm really a jack of all trades. So whether it's an RPG, a casual game, a puzzle, a platformer, a shooter, a fighter, a rhythm game or whatever, so long as we're NOT hoping off of Battle Buses or the Gulag, I'm sure anything will work. This one is the most important because it's the thing I want to be able to connect to someone the most, because it's the thing I'm most passionate about. Can't have long late night cozy gaming sessions if my potential partner doesn't game now can I?
- Anime lover, weeb, otaku, whatever term you wanna call it. This isn't a necessity per say as the gaming one is, but it'd be nice to have none the less. There's a whole great of wall of anime/manga that I wanna watch/read, and I hope to be able to do that with someone. But if not, live action shows on Netflix or HBO is a okay with me.
- Someone who is more than just a copy of me, and can respect when I want some alone time. I tend to do the exact same, and know that not everyday, at any time, are we going to have the energy to socialize or hang out, and some days, we're just going to want to spend some alone time to focus on work or ourselves. And I want someone who doesn't just think the same way as me. I love discussions and find what seperates a person from another special, and what makes them unique, so long as we respect each other's opinion and don't get toxic with it (not trying to date a Twitter stand here)
- Someone who is preferably around my age, though if you're on the more older side, please don't let that stop you from messaging me if this post catches your interest. The older the grape, the finer the wine as they say. 😅
- No drugs, but it's okay if you drink or smoke or have tattoos, just so long as you're disease and drug free, you do what you consider your best and happiest you, and I won't mind in the slightest. No preferences/limits on weight either, as I like both big and fit girls equally.
- Someone who is....uhhh...how do I phrase this, "sexually driven", but not like a lot (but it's even better if it happens to be a lot), but has a sex drive you know? You don't need to have a high libido, but I also want you to have some libido too. Also, like I mentioned before, I am very sub-like, so hopefully, you can be the dominant one if this turns out blossoming into a relationship.
- Someone who is close and can host is a huge plus as well (though as with the whole age thing, I'm totally not against long distance). I can host as well, but those times aren't always avaliable, as I do currently live with my family while working on my college degree in Computer Game Design in the next year or so.
- Someone who's looking for a MONOGAMOUS relationship. Not really a debate on this one. I'm not against those who like to have multiple partners, but is that something that I wanna engage in? Yeah, yeah, that's a hard no.
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
- Finally, preferences, NONE OF WHICH ARE REQUIRED ❌️, buuuuuutt, still, if you fit into any one of these, I very much hope this post catches your interest:
- Dominant woman, both in the relationship, and in the bedroom, and who is open-minded to experimentation
- White, which feels weird to say, just, I like white girls I mean, what can I say, as well as Asian, and or UK/British, they're accents just...AAHHHHHH! 😖
- Short haired, tomboish, and packed full of energy. I'm very animated, so hopefully you can also match the vibes, and bring me up mood wise when I'm down
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
And that's about it for now. Like I said before, I've only ever posted on here a few times before, so I don't know if I checked off everything that I should have said in a post like this, but hopefully (man I've been saying that word a lot here), this was enough to catch your attention and be willing to give a potential friendship/relationship with a guy like me, and if not I understand, and hope you find whatever you're looking for in someone else here. But if I have caught your eye, feel free to message me. It's been a long and lonely 22 years, and you'd probably make a wonderful change of pace.
Until then, bye! 🤗

2023.03.27 15:31 VashxShanks Guide and List to the Roguelike genre of JRPGs.
| This is a guide that I was working on and off on for a while, but sadly can't finish due to personal reasons. Still I hope it can help anyone who wants to get into this genre of JRPGs, or is a fan of it, and wants to learn more about it. As usual, if you missed or just want to check a few of the previously posted guides: If you want the entire list of guides (too long to post here), then you can check this JRPG wiki page: ~ Important Notes, Please read: ~ - As always, this guide/list, has no mobile only titles.
- All releases are in English unless otherwise stated.
- No hentai/eroge titles.
- No fan games/projects, like the Touhou games. Because then there would be too many to even list.
~ What is a Roguelike JRPG ~ Most of you probably are already familiar with the concept of Roguelikes. But for those who don't, here is a quick simple explanation: 🔵 The name itself is taken from the game "Rogue: Exploring the Dungeons of Doom", a game developed around 1980 by Michael Toy and Glenn Wichman with later contributions by Ken Arnold. It was first released on the Apple Macintosh and Commodore Amiga. While it's not the game that invented Roguelike mechanics, it is the game that popularized it, and therefore the genre was named after. 🔵 The genre centers around exploring randomly generated dungeons. Where the monsters, items, and layout of the dungeons are all randomized. Each new floor has harder and harder monsters to fight. 🔵 While the original Rogue used turn-based gameplay, as in a character moves on a grid-based layout. Later on, the genre has expanded to have action games too. Your character can move in the usual 4 cardinal directions, and also all 4 diagonal directions in between them. Every action you take is consider 1 turn (moving 1 space/swinging your weapon/using an item), after which every enemy on the map gets to also take 1 turn. 🔵 Items like potions, wands, and scrolls, start out unidentified. Meaning you don't know what effect they may have until you actually use them, and they can have positive or negative effects depending on how they are used. Then if you pick the same ones again, you'll already know what they do. But only in that current playthrough, as the same item can have a different effect in different playthroughs. 🔵 You can throw different types of items on enemies, to inflict different types of effects. 🔵 Limited vision is not something you worry about in the game, as every room is well lit and you can see the entire room once you enter it. But there special room where you can only see 1 tile around your character, and you also have limited vision in corridors. 🔵 Top-down view (aka bird's-eye view) is how you'll play through the entirety of the game. 🔵 You need to eat food to stay alive. Otherwise you'll eventually starve and die. But as long as you aren't starved, your health will regenerate normally as you move. 🔵 Death is permanent. Meaning you lose everything if you die once (items, levels, skills), although later on in other games, you lose everything anyway the moment you are done with your current dungeon run, and you have to start over from start on your next dungeon run. Fun Fact; the story reason for this, is that the gods will always rewind time to before you entered the dungeon and erase your memory, each time you die. 🔵 Other than enemies, the other biggest danger to the player are the traps scattered everywhere. Which can range from annoying to run ending. These are generally the base mechanics, but like any old genre, it has evolved and morphed into so many different types throughout the decades. Also like any genre that got popular, JRPGs made sure to inject Roguelike DNA into it's gameplay, which lead to many different unique titles. Of course JRPGs did put their own spin on the genre. Starting with the Mystery Dungeonseries: 🔴 Like Rogue, the game that popularized the concept in JRPGs, is "Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon" (Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon), released for the SNES in 1993 by Chunsoft or as it is known now, Spike Chunsoft. The success of the game turned it into the Mystery Dungeon (Fushigi no Dungeon) franchise that is still going today. 🔴 Torneko/Taloon is a character from Dragon Quest 4. So Torneko no Daibōken is essentially a spin-off of the Dragon Quest series. 🔴 Also like Rogue, while it did popularize the rogulike genre in JRPGs, it's not the first roguelike JRPG. There are earlier titles like Cave Noire which came before it. For the most part, JRPG Roguelikes are more faithful in terms of mechanics to the original Rogue, this includes having a hunger meter and all. But what exactly did JRPGs, or the Mystery Dungeon series, change about roguelikes ? 🟢 Town/Base: First off being a JRPG, they added a town where you can start quests, shop, and do other action. Essentially your base when you're not dungeon spelunking. You can upgrade your base, upgrade items/gear, and play some mini-games. 🟢 Multiple Dungeons: There is more than 1 dungeon. Depending on the game they can range from few to a large amount of very different dungeons. 🟢 Death is not Permanent: Why have a base/town ? Because now death is NOT permanent. Instead each time you die, you get sent back to your base, and continue the game. You still lose all items and levels. But you keep half of your gold. 🟢 Limited bag/inventory Size: As in you have a limited amount of items that you can carry with you in the dungeon. Inventory management is a big factor in these games. Because you have to make tough choices between what to keep and leave behind in each floor. But since you also can now bring back items to town, if you are able to leave without dying. 🟢 You can leave a dungeon without dying: This happens when you reach the last floor, or when you use a certain scroll that takes you out of the dungeon with all the money and items you have. 🟢 You can't stay in the same floor for too long: Unlike the original Rogue where you can spend as much time as you want in each floor. Now in this series, a mechanic will be present that will activate once you spend too much time in any single floor. Like a fog that starts covering the floor, which makes monsters stronger and more hostile towards you. 🟢 Monster Houses: They are rooms that you are filled with monsters so much that they almost fill the entire grid of the room. Usually they serve as traps and you might even be trapped in them and have to fight your way out. though they can also serve as a good place to become really powerful if you are able to handle it. 🟢 Can control 1 or multiple characters: Depend on the game, you still can only control 1 character at a time, but you can also switch who you control, or an AI will control the rest of the characters. There are other changes, but these are the main ones. Of course they also kept the stables of the genre, like Hunger meter, losing everything upon death and so on. ~ Classic Style Roguelikes ~ Here we will talk about roguelike JRPGs that basically have all of the traits we mentioned above in both the JRPG rogoulikes and the actual Rogue. So unless mention otherwise, expect that all titles in this section will have those traits above. ⭐ Mystery Dungeon series ⭐ We have already talked about this series already, so in this section I will talk about the collaboration the series did with different famous IPs. If your confused as to what this means, just think of the Dynasty Warriors series, and how they keep making Warriors games that uses famous IPs for it's world, like Gundam Warriors, Hyrule Warriors, Persona 5 Strikers, and so on. The Mystery Dungeon did the same: (Multiple Consoles) 📗[Titles in the series]: - ➔ Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon (SNES - Japan only - English fan Patch Available
- ➔ Torneko: The Last Hope/Torneko's Great Adventure 2 (PS1, there is a Japan only port on the GBA)
- ➔ Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon 3 (PS2 & GBA - Japan only)
- ➔ Young Yangus and the Mysterious Dungeon (PS2 - Japan only)
📗[Unique Gameplay Mechanics]: Almost all of them have been mentioned in the section above, but later games in the series did add new mechanics: ♦️ You can change classes in the 2nd game, but only after you beat the game. ♦️ In Yong Yangus, you can catch and add monsters to your party, to help you explore the dungeons and attack enemies. (Multiple Consoles) 📗[Story/Description]: This is basically where Chunsoft decided to take advantage of the success of their first Mystery Dungeon game (Taloon's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon), by making their own Original Mystery Dungeon series. Each game in the series usually start withs the titular character Shiren, a wandering samurai (Ronin) weasel friend Koppa arriving at a new village, where they learn about some evil they have to defeat, or a goal they have to achieve to help the people of this land. Unlike most other games in the Mystery Dungeon series, the Shiren series will always reset your progression when you die. Meaning that you lose everything, from levels, money, and items, and you are sent to the start of the entire game. There are of course gameplay features that you can use to help with that reset, such as storing some of your items in warehouses or tagging them so they can be retrieved even if you die, and other helpful functions. 📗[Titles in the series]: - ➔ Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer
(SNES, later remade for the NDS & iOS/Android - Japan only - English fan Patch Available)
- ➔ Shiren the Wanderer GB: Moonlit-Village Monster
(Game Boy, then remade for PC and that remake ported to iOS/Android - Japan only) (Nintendo 64 - Japan only - English fan Patch Available) - ➔ Shiren the Wanderer GB2: Magic Castle of the Desert
(Game Boy Color, then remade for the NDS - Japan only) - ➔ Shiren the Wanderer Gaiden: Asuka the Swordswoman
(Dreamcast, then remade for the PC - Japan only) (Wii, though there is a Japan only port on the PSP that also have an English fan Patch that is over 90% done) - ➔ Shiren the Wanderer 4: The Eye of God and the Devil's Navel
(NDS, enhanced port on PSP - Japan only) - ➔ Shiren the Wanderer 5: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate
(Japan only on the NDS, then an enhanced port released officially in English on the Vita, then enhanced again and released on Switch & PC. There is a Japan only port on mobile) 📗[Unique Gameplay Mechanics]: ♦️ You don't have companions in the early games, but you gain more with the newer releases. ♦️ Newer games can let you choose the difficulty, where the easy difficulty lets you save between dungeons, and also avoid losing everything after death. ♦️ In some of the titles, if you die, you can have other players actually go into the dungeon and save you. (Multiple Consoles) 📗[Story/Description]: In this series, the game starts with a human (you), finding out they were transformed into a Pokemon. What type of Pokemon they are is usually chosen after you finish answering the personality test at the start of the game, where you also get to choose a partner Pokemon that follows you throughout the main story. You then explore this new world that is solely inhabited by Pokemon, and instead of growls, they all speak and act like actual characters instead of just monsters you collect use for combat like in the original series. Where you try and find out, why and how were transported into this world. 📗[Titles in the series]: - ➔ Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue/Red Rescue Team and Pokémon (Red on the GBA, and Blue on the NDS, with remakes for both on the Switch)
- ➔ Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness (NDS)
- ➔ Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky (NDS)
- ➔ Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing Adventure Squad/Stormy Adventure Squad/Light Adventure Squad (Wii - Japan only - English fan Patch Available)
- ➔ Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (3DS)
- ➔ Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (3DS)
📗[Unique Gameplay Mechanics]: ♦️ Your Main & Partner Pokemon are chosen through a personality test at the start of the game. ♦️ Your level doesn't reset after you die in a dungeon. ♦️ You can have up to 3 Pokemons in your party. ♦️ You lose all your money, some of your items, and even Pokemons in your party when you die. ♦️ You get more Pokemons by defeating them in battle with your leader. Then you'll have a chance of that Pokemon asking to join your party. ♦️ There is a Weather Mechanic, where different weather types have different effects on you and the enemies. (3DS) 📗[Story/Description]: There isn't that much of a story, you basically create your 4 characters, head to the guild, and start taking missions. Also, if you didn't guess it yet, this is a collab with the Etrian Odyssey series. 📗[Titles in the series]: - ➔ Etrian Mystery Dungeon (3DS)
- ➔ Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 (3DS - Japan only)
📗[Unique Gameplay Mechanics]: ♦️ You can have 4 characters in your battle party. ♦️ You get to choose the class/job of each character, and spend skill points to choose their skills from the class/job skill tree. ♦️ You don't lose levels when you die, but you lose money, items, and gear. ♦️ You can build forts inside dungeons to stop Big monsters (DOEs) from getting out of the dungeon and destroying buildings in your town, which will stop you from using that building. ♦️ Even if the main party dies, if you have another party in a nearby fort, you can lead that party to rescue the fallen party. (Multiple Consoles) 📗[Story/Description]: The story here is basically Chocobo (you) and Mog, are a team of treasure hunters, and you explore dungeons for treasure. At least in the first 2 games. Because the 3rd one has a different story, with new characters, where instead of exploring dungeons, you actually dive into the mind space of different characters, who just happen to look like dungeons, to help them remember their lost memories. 📗[Titles in the series]: - ➔ Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon (PS1 & WonderSwan - Japan only - English fan Patch Available for both version)
- ➔ Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon 2 (PS1 - English fan Patch Available)
- ➔ Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon (Wii)
- ➔ Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon (Remake of the Wii game for the 3DS - Japan only)
- ➔ Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon (Enhanced edition of the 3DS remake for the Switch & PS4 - Japan only)
📗[Unique Gameplay Mechanics]: ♦️ You are alone in the first game, but in the 2nd & 3rd game you can have 1 more partner. ♦️ 3rd game has a class/job system. ♦️ You lose everything when you die, but you don't lose levels. Now there are more collabs (Gundam, Twinbee, Tower of Druaga) or the one off game One Way Heroics, but the ones I mentioned are the main ones. ⭐ NIS Roguelikes ⭐ Here we will talk about Roguelike made by the JRPG company Nippon Ichi Software (NIS), who is famous for games like the Disgaea series and Rhapsody series. There is no denying this company's love for rouglikes. And they are: (PSP/Switch/PC) 📗[Story/Description]: The game starts when the when the super hero Unlosing Ranger is hit by a truck while he's on his way to battle the boss Darkdeath Evilman, and before he dies, he hands out his morphing belt to a random person passing on the street (you), forcing them to inherit his title and powers, along with the responsibility to fight Darkdeath Evilman. You then get destroyed by the boss, and get saved in the last minute by the World Hero Society and taken to a training facility to train and become strong enough to beat the boss. This training is being sent out into Bizarro Earth, a parallel world of the real Earth. There you have to help certain people, because that means the same people in real earth will also get their problems solved, which gives the hero more power. 📗[Unique Gameplay Mechanics]: ♦️ Whenever you finish a dungeon or die, your level is reset to 1, but your base stats gets a boosted depending on your level before death. ♦️ You can equip 5 gear pieces (2 on each hand, 1 headgear, 1 for legs, and 1 expansion). Each piece will added attacks, skills, abilities, and of course boost your stats. ♦️ You can also boost your stats by using items you bring back and placing them in the Shadowgram, a human shaped diagram, where each item will give you a different type and amount of bonus to your stats. (PS3) 📗[Story/Description]: When Renya, a high school student wins a shady lottery in the mall, his prize is that he gets to become God. Where now he has to answers the prayers of mortals. This is done by him going into a copy of the real world, where he helps that person get their prayer answered. Which will then also effect that person in the real world. Of course the copy world is made out of dungeons. ♦️ You can also boost your stats by using holy icons, and placing them in the Divinigram, a human shaped diagram, where each holy icon will give you a different type and amount of bonus to your stats. ♦️ Your character can activate a limited powerup mode, gaining their God power to clear an entire room. ♦️ You can choose one of the angels to be your partner inside the dungeons. (PS3) 📗[Story/Description]: You, Shin Kamikaze, a human who gets killed on his way from school, and then sent to the angels in Celestia. There he gets implanted with the crystal of fate awakening. A crystal that turns you into a weapon to fight demons. 📗[Unique Gameplay Mechanics]: ♦️ You keep your levels this time around instead of losing everything. ♦️ Your spend points you gain from levels, into learning either devil or angels powers. ♦️ You can transform between an angel and devil form inside the dungeon. Each form will be stronger when facing the opposite type of enemies. 📗[Story/Description]: In a post-apocalyptic world, where humans have gone extinct. 2023.03.27 15:15 D_Blaze88 Things I've learned Since Dday
Most of you are probably familiar with my story. What I'm sharing today are things I've learned, while on this journey. Feel free to add to it if you'd like!
Oftentimes, infidelity happens long before an affair actually happens. There was a severe lack of communication about unmet needs, typically by the WS, but isn't exclusive to the WS. As the communication continues to breakdown, walls are slowly built between the BS and WS. Resentment builds slowly overtime and before you know, the WS has built a "version" of their BS in their mind. This version they created is not the BS' responsibility. Unmet needs could've been communicated but due to both spouses' attachment styles, amongst other things, things were never said. We often hear about how the WS has resentment towards those needs being unmet, but I'm willing to bet that they weren't giving as well as they think they were either, in some cases. Not all.
Boundaries. Boundaries are not about control. They are made to keep us safe. Boundaries were something we never talked about, let alone really understood. Cheating probably doesn't happen when boundaries are understood, constantly examined, and solid. This is where the how's and why's could lie. I said this in a comment, a few days ago, but I think I'll copy and paste part of that response here, for I think it is appropriate: It may have started innocent enough but if the WS already had piss poor boundaries, crossing them was all the more easier. The first few boundaries were easy enough. "I'm just sharing my info so we can talk about work." "She's/He's pretty friendly but she's/he's married too so nothing is going to happen." "Wow, the attention she's/he's giving me feels really nice. It's not cheating though." "It was just one kiss. That's still pretty innocent, as long as we don't have sex." See how boundaries can easily be crossed? And they get easier and easier to cross as time goes on, and before they knew it, they dug themselves in a hole that they doesn't know or remember how they got there in the first place.
Here's more from that same comment: Cheating is a symptom of the brokenness of the wayward, not in anyway, a shortcoming of the betrayed. It was their brokenness that allowed them to cross boundaries that they knew were wrong. They were seeking something external; to fill some kind of void inside of them. Picture it like a cup with a hole in it. You can keep pouring water into it all you want, but unless you fix the hole, the cup will always leak. Same thing with cheating. Something was wrong, inside of them, but instead of fixing the hole and reaching out for help, they sought external validation to numb whatever it was inside of them, that desperately needed to be addressed. In other words, they took the easy way out. Instead of looking inside themselves and confronting the darkness (the road less traveled), they ended up finding a "drug" to numb the pain. That is why they kept going back. The drug didn't fix the issue but it numbed it long enough so that they didn't have to feel the guilt and shame. So going back again and again was easier; a permanent "fix" to a temporary problem. Healthy people don't cheat and there are NO good reasons to cheat.
It cannot be stressed enough that the betrayed had NOTHING to do with the cheating, despite what the uninformed try to convey. How many times have we seen a show or movie that depicts cheating, only to shift the blame to the betrayed, due to (insert excuse or justification here)? Cheating involves taking away the BS' agency and they did NOT give consent to having a third party enter the marriage or relationship.
Betrayeds will oftentimes blame themselves, thinking there was a shortcoming on their part, that caused the betrayal. Do not allow your BS to accept ANY of the blame. The cheating was most likely inevitable anyways, no matter who your BS is or was.
The AP could've been anyone. They were one thing and one thing only: at the right place, at the right time. That's it. There is absolutely NOTHING special about the AP. Anyone can get cheated on. Cheaters gonna cheat.
It doesn't matter whether it was an EA or PA. Cheating is cheating. Betrayal is BETRAYAL. Just because you did not have sex, physically, doesn't make it any "less." They are both equally devastating. There are no modifiers to this. And it could be debated that if you were sexually gratifying yourself with your AP, due to sexting, phone sex, whatever the case, this could be interpreted as a PA. Either way, it all sucks.
Cheating is not about the shortcomings in the relationship. Sure, there were things that needed to be addressed, but what was stopping them from being addressed? And if you really think about it, whatever the WS was seeking, they probably could've gotten from their betrayed. (See lack of communication).
Real accountability involves saying what you did. Period. There are no "buts" behind these statements. Take the bubble wrap off your ego. Speaking of ego, real accountability involves true remorse. At the heart of true remorse is humility (the very opposite of haughtiness, which is at the heart of that aforementioned bubble wrapped ego), and empathy. The best definition of empathy is "your pain in my heart." Empathy doesn't come naturally to everyone. However, for the WS, it is imperative that you try to understand the pain you've caused, due to your actions.
Empathy is something that the BS learns as well. Your wayward will never completely understand your pain. That is impossible. You may have that strong urge to lash out at them and make them feel what you feel. It is normal but do your best to be mindful of your actions and words as well. They can have a lasting effect. Not getting help can be your worst enemy so definitely get IC, too, to help process those emotions in a healthy way. Turning your wayward into your personal punching bag is not processing the emotions in a healthy way. It may feel good in the moment, but no real healing occurs there.
Real accountability involves saying "I'm sorry." More than once. It involves changed behavior. What are you doing differently that shows your BS that 1) it is over, 2) it won't happen again, 3) you are taking the necessary steps to prove that you are changing. Simply "not cheating anymore" is the bare minimum and does nothing to prove changed behavior. You will not receive a pat on the back for no longer cheating. What reward does the betrayed get for not cheating on you despite being in the same difficult relationship? What reward does the betrayed get besides confirming their suspicions and that they weren't crazy?
Cheating is a form of abuse. We usually associate abuse with some form of a physical altercation. Abuse is not exclusive to something physical. This is emotional abuse and it causes PTSD. This is exasperated by trickle truth, gaslighting, blame-shifting, actions taken after the disclosure, etc. When your BS is triggered, they are essentially reliving the abuse over and over. Their emotional side of their brain has taken over, the rational brain has been shut down, and they are hijacked by the trauma they suffered from YOUR actions. When these triggers happen, do not try to explain the actions away, give reasons why they "should be over it by now" (I'll get to that in a min), or try to explain why they misunderstood. Instead, think of these 2 words for when triggers happen: comfort and reassurance. That is what your betrayed is fishing for when they get triggered. Comfort and reassurance.
The betrayed doesn't simply "get over it." If it were that easy, we wouldn't be here because we're probably rugsweeping. In order to help your BS "get over it," you must sit in their pain with them. Help them piece together the puzzle of your betrayal. There are no guarantees. You can get all of the answers right and still lose. That's not just about cheating and infidelity. That's just life.
Consistent actions will be one of the most important things you can show your BS that things have changed and you are becoming a better, healthier person. For them, and for you.
Untransformed pain will be transmitted. The pain will follow you, wherever you go, and that's regardless of if you stay in the relationship or not. That goes for both spouses.
This process will take an extreme amount of patience, kindness and compassion from both partners. The process is not linear. There will be ups and downs, mountains and valleys. As long as you both are going all in, you can get through them together.
The relationship you had is gone forever and you cannot get it back. Blind trust and innocence has been shattered and cannot be recovered. Both spouses need to mourn those losses. You are both no longer the same people. You will mourn 1) who you were, 2 who you thought your spouse was, 3) the future as you saw it before, 4) the shared memories which are now tainted, and 5) the old relationship. There's more but you get the idea.
Trust can be reestablished, but most is dependent on the WS. Trust is lost in buckets, but only gained in drops. This goes back to those consistent actions. This will take TIME. However, as the BS, it would be wise to at least acknowledge the work and efforts your WS is putting in to regain that trust, due to consistency.
These are some things I've learned but like I said, please feel free to add to it!

2023.03.27 15:09 knefehangelshare Bullshit Hour - Taylor ghost writing for Fall Out Boy
So I know theres been some talk of Taylor maybe ghostwriting with Lana but the same day Fall Out Boy released an album. And if you didnt know Taylor credits Pete Wentz as her main song writing inspo theres a great post on here about that
here TLDR Pete has his own Karlie that broke his heart after 3 months and illicit meetings and he has yet to get over it.
On the last album there was a song called Bishops Knife Trick where he claims that “these are the last blues youre ever gonna get” but this album there are references back to the most prolific of petekey songs so do with that what you will. ALSO he was There the night of the VSFS 2013 but thats another post for another day.
That brings us up to this album. For one Petes songwriting influenced Taylor a lot so parallels drawn can usually be attributed to that but theres a couple songs here that make me go TAYLOR ALLISON SWIFT!
First and foremost we have Heaven, Iowa.
Heaven Iowa starts with a classic FOB movie reference but this time its Mullhound Drive a movie about… an aspiring actress named Betty who meets and befriends another woman and go on to find her true identity.
the song goes on “you and i and a screwtop bottle of wine” damn that sounds familiar…
“ive unspooled on the floor” i picture you with other girls and throw up on the floor
“kiss my cheek baby please would you read my eulogy” see my tears ricochet
“i will never ask you for anything but to dream sweet of me” see wildest dreams
“tell me when the party ends will you still love who i am” this aint for the best my reputations never been worse so you must like me for me
then comes the chorus … “scar crossed lovers forever” a play on star crossed lovers which are lovers who cant be together due to circumstances out of their control and of course “you drew stars around my scars but now im bleeding”
its all just … theres also some lyrics tbat are more petekeyesque but considering taylor is a loser who grilled pete on the meaning of his lyrics im sure she knows all the petekey lore

2023.03.27 14:48 Tigra21 Hunter or Huntress Chapter 163: Beehive
Tom had been a little anxious about going back to the workshop, fearing that dealing with Edita would sour the thus far rather good day. But after all he had gone through, she too seemed a bit different. She was still absolutely bubbling with questions. and her doe-eyed admiration of him was a little unsettling. As was the fact that she treated the drawings he had changed with near reverence. But Jacky hadn’t swung in to pry them apart or made any threatening noises and Edita had adopted a more respectful attitude. Like she was talking to a superior, he kinda liked that if he was being totally honest at least just a little bit.
Tom guessed it had all been a bit much on the first day. And thinking back he had done a rather shit job of saying no to her. He thanked his lucky stars that she was better behaved now, but deep down he knew Saph and Essy were probably the actual reason. Hell, he might not even have lucky stars here.
He could hear Jacky and Saph chatting in the corner, catching each other up on recent events while everyone else got down to work. while the rest of them got to work. Shiva had eventually come in from the forge to hear what all the commotion was about, and after a short rundown, she had left with Jacky. Tom guessed she wanted a little bit of one on one with her daughter after all that had happened. Quite understandable in his mind, and frankly he would have expected her to do it much sooner. Jacky had handed Sapphire the halberd along with instructions to ‘stand guard for me,’ which did seem to surprise Saph just a little. But, to her credit, she still did it.
He couldn’t help but feel much safer and happier down here. Even he and Shiva were definitely on the same team, and he couldn’t imagine a scenario where he would have to worry about Edita short of him making some very egregious error in her eyes. And thus far she had seemed rather loose when it came to rules. Thinking back, that was probably his answer as to why Joelina had chosen her for this job despite the rather extreme difference in personality.
They had gone over the designs for the water jacket and made some more changes, including a new tighter recoil spring to compensate for the lighter inner barrel. The second Tom approved them Edita had wanted to get started. He had managed to talk her into telling him a bit about what she knew of arcane machinery first though. It had been a rather enlightening tale, if a little depressing too. She knew how to make enchantments, and with Apuma or Linkosta providing the actual magic they should be able to replicate many enchantments that Edita was quite certain not even Linkosta knew about. Even if the two mages might need some more training on some of the finer points.
But her tales of magic shields and such apparently lay beyond them. It turned out what was needed for enchantments like that was beyond simple hand-carved commands. She had fished out a book detailing among other things how the central core at the capital worked. Before starting though, she gave the most half-hearted ‘don’t say this to anyone’ speech Tom had yet heard. He just nodded as did the rest of them as she opened the locked tome with a key produced from under her flowing metallic robes.
“See all these pages?” she went as she rapidly paged through page after page of solid text.
“Yeah?... I can’t read any of it. I’m sorry.”
“Looks like magical runes to me,” Tink interjected, clearly trying to be helpful. Edita nodded to the inventor.
“Precisely. Hundreds of lines of enchantments. This is all that we have found in just one finger responsible for suspending the energy inside the core. There are 24 fingers in total. 24!” she reiterated, looking around at them with wide eyes.
“Must be in a tiny script then,” Tink concluded, clearing his throat and huffing a bit. “What did they do, shrink down the one who scribed them in?”
“No no, you don’t understand. It is tiny. Some of what we have found is so small that you could write thousands of words just on a finger claw.”
“Miniaturized technology,” Tom replied with an appreciative nod. “Like our computer tech.”
“Precisely,” Edita went, pointing at him before returning to paging. “But if we try to scribe runes even several times that size, we can hardly get anything to flow through them. The enchantments are powerless.”
“The resistance Linkosta talked about a while back. The reason she wanted dragon’s blood for Jacky’s armor.”
“Dragon’s blood is alright… did you use some of the unicorn horn you have?” Edita asked cautiously, looking up from her book.
“Sure did.”
“Very good. That will make it much better. But yes, the resistance becomes far too high in such inscriptions if they are made normally. But with machines and precision, it can be done better and smaller. But the key is inscribing using pure essence. The stuff you found in the cylinders down below.”
“The gravity oil?” Tom asked. “Problem solved then, we have plenty of that.”
“That is the base ingredient. We tend to just call it essence in the form you have. More work is required though. And then the enchantments must be bound with what the ancients call an eldritch forge. Normal containment spells cannot contain the inscribing. They will rip apart and break immediately.”
“The stuff Linkota did after she painted the runes.”
“Yes. The enchantments are first etched, then inscribed, then bound. Often you seal them too to try and protect them from damage. You know, to prevent scratches and such.”
“Makes sense I guess. And a person can’t do that well enough, so you need a magic machine to make magic machines.”
“More or less, yes.”
“And you have some.”
“We do… just not out here. They are rather big, and the power draw is immense, we would need a core. And I know of only two left.” Edita apologized, looking truly sorry. “Even if we did, doing that amount of etching and inscribing would be near impossible to do by hand.”
“I bet,” Tom sighed. “Well then, I guess we can’t rely on that anyway then. We’ll have to go with what’s actually available. So those enchantments of yours… How could they affect, say, barrel life?”
“They could nearly eliminate wear if that is what you mean. But they must be powered.”
“Right… power.”
“Everything comes with a cost,” Edita apologized once more, like it was somehow her fault how the world worked.
“Not your fault, don’t feel bad about it. Oh right, that core of yours. It contains energy… Like a battery of sorts. What about that, can we make that? I guess not if there are only two left.”
“Indeed, I’m sorry. The enchantments that contain the energy are immensely complex. The ones used to capture it even more so. Those can be replicated rather primitively though if they don’t need to reach far and wide without becoming hopelessly inefficient.”
“So snatch it from the enemy then? Why not just do that?”
“Because they can cut off the flow of magic? That is part of the immense complexity of the cores. We do not understand how it was achieved but they can bypass such restrictions… Have you not tried using magic items before?”
“I mean… a pair of earrings once,” Tom admitted with a shrug. “They are quite expensive, okay? we only had like 4 magic items here before you showed up.”
Edita just stared at him then looked around at the others with a look of betrayal on her face. “You didn’t teach him what to do if someone tries to drain him? What if you had fought a witch or something?”
“I’m pretty sure he did at some point actually,” Tink added, rubbing his chin thoughtfully before Saph poked him rather hard in the side with the haft end of the halberd. Something which Edita did in fact seem to notice, turning her attention to the huntress.
“Why didn’t you teach him?”
“Because no one would ever try that? Everyone can just go ‘No, fuck you’ and turn off the flow. Why waste a complicated spell on it?”
“A lot of animals don’t know how to. What if they didn’t know what he was?” Edita countered, clearly appalled by this apparent lack of training.
“Dude is talking and running around with a magic fire stick. Pretty sure they wouldn’t mistake him for an animal, in fact he would seem more like a mage himself,” Saph replied, seeming less than pleased at the accusations as Tom just blinked a couple times trying to work out how he should feel about this. He was pretty sure he had been told by someone at some point that he could just turn off the flow of magic if he wanted. But if he was being totally honest here he couldn’t quite work out how. When he had the earrings on he had just started feeling sick.
“Uhm question?” he interrupted as Saph and Edita were having a little discussion about whether anyone born in the last thousand years would ever bother trying to magically drain an opponent in combat.
“Yes?” Saph questioned, turning to look at him, Edita’s head quickly snapping to look at him as well.
“How exactly would I do this? Sounds important.”
“Simple. You feel the flow of magic and shut it off just like when you are using your own magi…” Saph started before trailing off.
“I see a flaw in this plan.”
“He must learn this. If anyone finds out he cannot fight such an attack he could be doomed,” Edita interjected, seeming deathly serious.
“Never even heard of anyone getting killed like that,” Tink added in, scratching the back of his neck, seeming a little stumped as well. “Well, aside from people who managed to off themselves by accident when mucking about with magic that is.”
“I guess we put a magic gizmo on him and work out if he can cut the flow then?” Saph questioned, still sounding a little annoyed as she looked at Edita.
“Yes, right this instant. Wait here,” the artificer replied with a new and certainly surprising determination entering her voice. Like she was dealing with a serious matter. “Imagine what would happen if one of our enchantments failed and he couldn’t stop it from killing him! Oh by the gods!” she complained as she started going through boxes.
Tom did as he was told and waited. Insane as it sounded, he trusted the slightly nutty artificer not to want to kill him. He didn’t have to wait long before Edita returned with a small lacquered wooden box with a very extravagant set of decorations on it. She unceremoniously popped the lid off of it, setting it down gently and lifted out a small octagonal metal rod with inscriptions running down each side, little metal sliders also sitting in various positions along said sides. To Tom the inscriptions looked tiny enough to be a real fucking bitch to do by hand, but he guessed they were nothing compared to what she had been talking about earlier.
“This is a load. It can be used to, well… put a load on an enchantment,” Edita explained with a nervous chuckle, looking at him.
“But a person can use it too?” Saph questioned, tilting her head.
“Yes. You need that sometimes. One moment,” Edita went as she started fiddling with the sliders. “Right, minimum setting. Run it for long enough and it should start getting warm. Should take a while, it is designed to be very inefficient. And you can turn it off there or just drop it. Just please… on the table, not the floor,” she explained, almost pleadingly on the last bit, clutching her hands after putting it down on the table for him.
“Well then… I guess only one thing for it. This should be interesting,” Tom shrugged as he scanned the room to confirm Jacky had still not returned.
“I swear by all the gods if this puts you back in bed,” Saph let out, shaking her head as Tom picked up the small device.
“Oh relax, I’ve done this before. Worst that’s gonna happen is I can’t stop it and I have to put it down,” Tom replied sarcastically as he held the rod with just a bit of apprehension. ‘You better be right this time, knucklehead.’
he hesitated for a second holding his hand over the little slider, before manning up and moving it upwards one notch. The tiny runes started to glow a dim blue, almost like there was LED backlighting at play.
It certainly felt funny. It was hard to describe. It was almost not noticeable. Like the life getting drained out of you by discussing politics with family at Christmas or something.
“Okay, now try and feel the magic flow and cut it off,” Saph added in hopefully.
“I’ll be honest, I don’t feel much really.”
“How is that possible?” Saph questioned, looking to Edita.
“How should I know? He is not a dragonette. Not born with magic.”
“But he can still use it,” Saph protested.
“Evidently,” Edita responded, sounding a little disheartened as she looked at the rod. “We could try pulling more to help you feel it.”
“Or we could not,” Saph squeaked out, not sounding overly pleased with that particular idea.
“Worst that happens is I faint, right?” Tom questioned looking at the strange device.
“In theory,” Edita relented, though not sounding overly convinced. “Unless you hold onto it after fainting, at which point it will drain you until you die… it’s not a bad way to go really,” Edita replied very reluctantly. “We would pry it away from you before that happens. Obviously.”
“Yes, obviously,” Saph echoed as Tom turned to look at Tink and Junior. Tink was just giving him the thumbs up with a big smile on his face, Junior looking rather more worried.
“Well what are the chances of me being the victim of two different life threatening magic phenomena that can’t be explained in the same week, ey? Don’t tell Jacky,” Tom chuckled though not quite as calmly as he would have hoped. Still he felt fine… just a little funny. So he moved the slider with the numbers on it up a little, giving Edita time to stop him if it was the wrong one he had grabbed.
She didn’t and he felt the sensation grow stronger. Now there was no doubt as he felt his breathing quicken and fingers start to ache a little. He then proceeded to close his eyes in the hope some Jedi zen shit would help him close his chakras or whatever it was he needed to do here.
He honestly didn’t expect much success from that idea, but what he got as he settled down a little and tried to feel what was happening was best described as continuous shiver running down his spine. It was faint. Not much of note, only really enough to be annoying once he noticed it. So he did what he always did with shivers. He focused on it to make it go away, releasing that nice sensation all throughout his back that wasn’t ever really enough.
He got the exact same result here and opened his eyes to find the rod inert in his hands.
“Well that worked, I guess.”
“Baah, I wasn’t worried,” Tink loudly proclaimed, giving Tom a good slap on the back as the two women stood there staring at him then to each other, both pulling cautious smiles.
“Better safe than sorry, I guess?”

“Are they putting her to work right away?” Saph asked, looking out from the greeting platform over the green rolling hills and two small shimmering lakes surrounding the keep. Change was in the air, the small patches of trees starting to yellow and the grass was starting to fade a little too. The wind was starting to bite a bit more to the point Saph was wondering when winter clothes might be needed.
When the cold started to hit properly they would need to stay moving when outside, which was good for working spirits but still sucked. In the distance the glinting black form of Yldril slowly grew larger as she crested a hill heading towards them slowly and steadily.
Behind them, inside the shelter of the greeting hall, Archeon was being loaded for his trip to the capital. Dakota was overseeing as Vulzan and his crew labored. Saph and Ray had lent a hand earlier, but they were mostly done by now so they had excused themselves to go watch Yldril’s arrival.
“Fengi will go easy on her I am sure,” Ray replied a little forlornly. “Is she as mean as the other said?”
“Downright evil,” Saph sighed, shaking her head a bit. “And Fengi is dead set on trying to fix that.”
“Do you think she can?”
“I have no idea. What I do know is she will try her damndest. I hope that damn dragon doesn’t make her anymore depressed… It’s gonna suck next time Tiguan swings by too.”
“He’s not gonna like her is he?”
“No, I don’t think so… she’s a real piece of work,” Saph sighed, trying not to sound too depressed at the notion.
“Where is she staying? Just down in the grass next to Galaxer?” Ray asked cautiously.
“Yup. Just in the grass and outside every night. Fengi wants her to have nothing so she can make her earn it slowly. Make a lesson out of it. I think she’s trying to do what Tom did with Jarix. Biggest difference being that Jarix isn’t an evil murderous arsehole, she is.”
“What about winter?”
“She’ll be fine, dragons hibernate all winter anyway. Might just get her some cover if she comes around enough to earn it.”
“Are the winters bad here? It normally feels warm, but it’s starting to get quite chilly,” Ray asked carefully, rubbing her shoulders a bit.
“We’re pretty southern. Usually isn’t that bad, but we do get snow most years.”
“I hate the snow,” Ray responded, sounding quite unhappy. Saph could guess why easily enough. If the cold was rough on folk with a roof over their head, she didn’t want to think about what it did to people living on the streets.
“Well here you’ll have a warm bed, even if it gets a bit chilly outside. Woodstocks are more than plenty too, our dear Rachuck makes sure of that.”
“He’s very nice isn’t he? He cares so much.”
“I guess so, I think Dakota put it best. ‘Don’t tell him a horror story or he’ll try to prepare for it and then you’ll be working all night,’ ” Saph chuckled, letting a cautious smile creep onto her face.
Ray chuckled lowly as well, still looking out over the changing landscape. It was still quite beautiful, and the sun was shining. That was likely to become a rarer and rarer sight moving forward though. She would miss bathing in the sun to relax. This year had been so damn busy they hadn’t really gotten away with much relaxation.
They weren’t exactly lazy normally, but one needed breaks every now and again. She let her mind drift back to the time at the lake, the movie nights, the little festival and the various feasts they had held. It had been a good year in its own insane way. Maybe winter would be cozy if a little boring just like the old days.
‘Who am I kidding. It will be crazy all winter long.’
“Who did she say that to?” Ray questioned, Saph taking a second to remember what she had said.
“Oh… me. She told me that back when I came here. Gotta say, she was certainly right. She still grumbles about giving Herron the same advice. Little did she know he would take that one a bit too much to heart.”
“Oh come on, he’s not that bad… He’s just a bit sleepy.”
“At all hours of the day” Saph replied, finding it her turn to chuckle a bit. “You wanna go say hi to our first unwilling member?”
“Not really, no…”
“Me neither,” Saph echoed reluctantly. “But Fengi needs friends right now. Gotta go give her a hand.”
“Don’t get hurt, she sounded real mean. Oh, maybe have her bring some water. Rachuck wants the emergency barrels changed before winter.”
“I think that can wait till it starts getting a bit colder, we want it fresh for winter don’t we,” Saph replied with a reassuring smile before letting her wings fold out, starting to feel out the cold air. “See you in a bit, and don’t let old Rachuck work you to the bone.”
“Oh no, don’t worry, I’ll be busy with the floors and the dishes.”
Saph stood there watching Ray, letting her wings feel out the wind for a second longer as she sighed, still smiling. “Well, no taking everyone’s chores either, gods know least of all Herron’s.”
And with that Saph let herself drop off the platform, wings catching as she silently glided down towards where Tom was busy planning out their next bunker while Kulinger had a second group of people planning out where their new warehouse would go. All in all the whole place was bustling with activity both inside and out. Even the techies were out lending a hand with construction planning.
Saph had a hard time believing they would get it all done in time for winter, but with the workers assigned to Hylsdal and Grevi helping out, they might just manage it, depending of course on how soon said construction crew could move their asses over here.
‘There’s gonna be a lot of hard work this autumn isn’t there… fucking hell we better get paid good.”
__________________________________________________________________________________
It had been a while since Tom had last seen the black dragon, and that encounter had left her with freshly broken bones, the tip of her tail snapped off, and blood leaking from reopened wounds everywhere.
‘... I want healing like that,’ Tom concluded to himself as the dragon limping her way past them. It was several kilometers to her little camp. It was only a short hop on the wing, but it was still quite the walk. And she was evidently still in far from good shape. She wasn’t dripping blood or anything, but she was definitely limping quite badly. Enough to make Tom wonder if some bones hadn’t quite set right. Or perhaps she was just sore after walking for several miles while not quite healed.
As she came by she didn’t seem to pay him or anyone else any mind whatsoever. Work came to a halt as people stopped to stare, most of them hatefully. Yet she simply carried on as if they didn’t exist. No prancing, no cowering or looking worriedly around trying to guess who was gonna throw something at her first. She just carried on like a wounded robot.
‘I guess Fengi has been working her magic then,’ Tom just noted for himself solemnly. It made sense. Yldril wouldn’t really be up for walking several kilometers while wounded to a place she hated for its mere existence and which hated her just as much in return.
Everyone wanted a good look at the dragon. Some hadn’t seen her since the battle, and the mood had grown very grim to say the least. Tom didn’t know how to feel about it all. There could be no doubt she was guilty of some truly heinous crimes, yet here she was, a slave for eternity. Fengi walked out front, doing her best to stare down most of the keep. She wasn’t stupid, she knew half the keep didn’t want Yldril anywhere near here and the other half would quite happily see her worked to death in short order, at least before the whole Kalestine mess which made it all rather complicated.
Tom couldn’t decide what he wanted. What he knew though was that Fengi wasn’t letting either happen. ‘Damn girl is even more naive than me,’ he caught himself chuckling quietly as everyone else remained somber. There was the odd spitting in the dragon's direction, but mostly just staring and hateful glances before people started to get back to their jobs, turning their back on the dragon.
Tom had a feeling that if anyone had some rotten tomatoes, Yldril would have gotten a face full, but as it was he just stood there and stared.
“Well, at least she’ll be useful,” Raulf the gruff old farmer let out from next to him, leaning on his shovel like a pro and looking after the dragon as she carried on toward the base of the keep. “Are they letting her sleep that close to us? Really?”
“I don’t know, maybe they just want to unload the camp supplies. I see they made her carry most of it.”
“Well it was her camp, wasn’t it?” Raulf replied with a chuckle, standing up straight and hefting his spade. “Think she’s in shape to dig yet?”
“At least give her a bit to rest after that walk. Maybe we just set out the markers today and get to work on the wood we have. Plenty of work to do before we start digging anyway.”
“Fair enough,” Raulf concurred. “Think we can convince the white one to help haul some logs until the tax collector there is ready to pull her weight?”
“I guess we can try. I think we might want to try and have a meeting with dear Kalestine first though. I have a feeling she’s not in a great mood.”
“You’re making it rather hard to get to work, you know that right?” Raulf jested as Tom sighed deeply. “I guess so… I was just gonna send Kulinger and cross my fingers.”
“Brilliant plan, I’ll fetch him right away. Should have thought of that.”
“Wait, no.”

“Soo how is she doing?” Saph asked once she managed to spot a rather distraught-looking Fengi wandering away from everyone else. She probably wanted some peace and quiet, but Saph wasn’t sure that was smart right now.
Fengi was a little startled before turning to look at Saph with a forced upon looking smile. “Oh you know. Everyone hates her and she hates them, both convinced they are in the right.”
“She thinks she’s in the right?” Saph questioned, trying not to sound disrespectful and failing at least a little bit.
“Yes, she somehow does,” Fengi admitted. “In her own stupid, selfish way.”
Saph walked up and placed a reassuring hand on Fengi’s shoulder giving her a little shake. “Hey, you got this. If anyone might rub off on her it’s you. Heavens know you can be infectiously happy sometimes.”
“Not right now I’m not… And if I mess up, she will hurt someone. Probably out of spite more than anything else. I can’t let her do anything. She’s gonna hate me for it. Well more than she already does.”
“Normally I would say some trust is in order to prove you mean well, but…”
“She’s not trustworthy at all. Doesn’t even try to hide it,” Fengi carried on, sounding defeated, ears hanging limp by the side of her head as she looked down, kicking the ground a little. “She’s a fucking arsehole.”
“She’ll crack eventually. Sounds like she might have been at least decent at some point… even if it was a few centuries ago. If nothing else, she might behave just to get a tarp over her head.”
“That was the plan, wasn’t it?” Fengi sighed nervously as she looked up at the keep, the blue sky silhouetting nicely behind the tall stone structure sitting perched atop the outcropping. “I just hope people at least leave her alone in the night.”
“Might wanna tell Rachuck and the guards to keep an eye on her… How’s Unkai doing by the way?”
“Oh he’s over there,” Fengi replied, gesturing over her shoulder at the diminutive dude who was currently talking with Rachuck about something next to the wood-drying hut.
“I mean how are the two of you doing?” Saph reiterated gingerly, hoping there was at least some good news on that front for the young huntress.
Fengi turned to look at Saph, clearly trying very hard to not look sad, which only made her look more tragic. “He told me why he was so scared of me… What do you even say to that?” Fengi pleaded, eyes starting to turn wet.
“Oh come here,” Saph went, hoping a hug would at least help as she embraced Fengi, stroking the back of her head. “It’s gonna be fine I’m sure. He just needs to get used to it, you know? Like when we went swimming. Remember that?”
“Mhmhhm,” Fengi nodded, burying her face against Saph’s chest.
“It was scary, we had all been taught to fear the water, right? What can be in it, the cold, drowning, all that? Right from when we were little.”
“Yeah?” Fengi sniffled, not letting go.
“Well, he has to go swimming now. He is scared, he’s been told to be scared all the way since he was little. Maybe he’s like Dakota, but the little bugger loves you. I mean come on, he would be over the hills hiding if he didn’t.”
“But he’s scared of me. I can’t even whisper in his ear without him going stiff as a plank. Talking around the fire at night, he just sits there with fear in his eyes.”
“Well even with that medal he got, he’s never been the bravest, now has he? Keep trying. He’ll grow used to it. He’ll learn to trust you just like Yldril will. I have to say I don’t envy you right now. Even with a dragon at your beck and call.”
“Please don’t say it like that. Makes me sound like some evil witch from the stories when we were little.”
“Well, remember what one evil witch could do in those stories. Now imagine what you can manage. You could turn out a damn hero one day, you know that, right?”
“I guess so,” Fengi had to concede, even if it didn’t seem to cheer her up overly much. She didn’t even move a muscle from where Saph was holding her tight, still stroking the back of her head. “She might have got her ass beat by Glira, but she is incredibly strong. If I can somehow bring her around, she could make everything so much quicker without making every day a living hell.”
“And hey, it would only be the what… fourth, fifth, sixth? miracle to happen here this year?” Saph tried jokingly, giving Fengi a bit more of a squeeze and holding her close. “Odds are on your side there’s a couple left before winter.”
Fengi did let out a chuckle at that before sighing and looking up, though still not letting go. “Thanks, Saph.”
“Don’t mention it. Now I think I better go have some stern words about not giving our not-so-nice black dragon further reason to hate our guts. Think you’ll be okay in the meantime?”
Fengi just nodded, sighing a bit as she let go. “I’ll be fine.”
“You know what you could do? Go find Ray, it’s been a bit, she might have some ideas too. She won’t admit it, but she’s actually sorta smart.”
“You know what… I might just do that,” Fengi replied with a cautious smile as Saph gave her a last rub on the back, wearing a big smile.
“Catch you later then. I won’t be long, I promise.”

2023.03.27 14:29 ARMA-italianhandmade Last weekend I saw the real impact it's having on me.
I always worked, with great fatigue and falling asleep at work in the bathroom, but when the weekend came and I got to see my partner for a couple days I always kept enough energy to do something at least for one or two afternoons ( a walk, a movie, playing music..).
Last Saturday (also because of my period) I became so exhausted and nauseous that I fell asleep on our friend's couch, then again at home right after dinner. Sunday morning I couldn't keep my eyes open, my breathing was slow, my eyes crossing and closing. I tried but couldn't stay up until 2.30 pm and was back to dissociating on the couch at 8.
It's the first time I couldn't control the pain and fatigue enough to keep company to my partner. I felt so powerless.

2023.03.27 14:20 greg0525 I will never go back to the forest
It was early morning. Thick clouds were looming in the sky. It was a powdery grey with no hint of sun, so thick and pregnant with rain that it blackened the edges of everything. The clouds hung overhead, drifting slowly in and out of the trees, their shadows were thrown on the ground, swaying across the ground. Fish from the river nibbled at the bank, sampling the cool air. The thick leaves of huge trees formed an almost impassable barrier between the forest and the town. The air was full of moisture as damp leaves soaked up water from the ground and released it again in a cool mist that clung to everything it touched and left behind a scent that smelled like rain and new beginnings.
I had been running for almost an hour. Water splashed from the puddles that my feet pounded against them, darkening my pants and splattering mud onto my tracksuit. My shoes dug into the dirt and grass, which crunched beneath me, my breathing was heavy, and my heart was pounding in my chest. The cool air was like a gift, sent by God himself as I was sweating profusely. This was not how I pictured myself getting ready for my wedding to the love of my life. The running was only meant to help me lose weight, and yet, I found myself falling behind my ideal fitness level. Just when I thought I could go no farther, I could run no longer, I found myself at the end of the Black Rain forest, which was still a mile from my home. I leaned over, hands on my knees, trying to catch my breath. My lungs felt like they were on fire. The air smelled of green plants and animals and decomposed leaves. I breathed in deeply, feeling the weight of this morning pushing me along.
I checked my watch and got relieved that I had reached my goal and the 3 miles of running were done. I looked up at the sky. The clouds were darker and more threatening now. I did not care if I got soaking wet but at that point, I changed my mind and decided to cross the forest before it started raining. Catching a cold would not be a good idea before the wedding. I started walking towards the trees and turned onto a smaller dirt road that bordered the edge of the forest.
It was the same forest in which I had played as a child and watched birds build their nests and run around with my best friend Robert hiding from their parents. My aunt always complained about me wandering off into the woods and getting lost on occasion but by that time, I knew the forest very well. She told me that I was too old to be doing such things and I should be at home with her or out hunting with my uncle and cousins. I remembered watching the tall trees swallow my parents and sister when we ventured up past them to get the lumber I had stacked there earlier that week. Or, what gave me peasant memories were the picnics with my family. It was always me who was tasked with finding a nice meadow or clearing where we could settle down, set up the temporary table with chairs and have a nice meal.
I remember the sun, which was bright and warm and the grass smelled like my mother's freshly-baked bread. The sandwiches, covered in plastic and smelling like my mother's homemade soup, were a little taste of home, even if they were eaten far from it. I spent hours just sitting there, watching the dance of the creatures through the trees. All sorts of mammals socialized that day: foxes, badgers, otters, and a single raven perched in a tree while its companion spoke with another raven on the ground. Sometimes they stayed out even after dark, supposing the weather was warm enough. My father used to make fire and my brother, my parents, my uncle and aunt and their kids were all sitting around the fire, singing. The fire was bright and warm and it made the night feel cosy. The fire served as the centre of their camp circle and it was the place where we roasted marshmallows on sticks and sat around telling stories when it got cold. The fire sputtered and crackled, sending sparks of light into the night sky. The smoke spiralled above us up into the branches of the trees that made a canopy over their heads. I sometimes played with my cousin or caught lightning bugs with my brother.
My uncle sometimes told exciting campfire stories. Stories about the forest, which was believed to be haunted by the ghost of some children who had disappeared years ago and some locals could still hear their screams and voices. The ghosts' voice was said to ring through the dead branches and whistle through the empty air, keening like a siren. Sometimes at night, their cries could be heard ringing through the hollows. But I myself had never experienced anything like that. I had never seen more than a shadow in the woods.
What I have seen, was something much more terrible. But before I tell you more about it, you need to understand what the place where I live is like.
Black Rain is an island not far from the western coast of British Columbia. It rains every day because of the wet climate. The community of this island is like a big family. Almost everyone knows everyone, and many people love and hate each other at the same time. But those who think fondly of each other are very close. Oscar Gray, an athlete who has won several of the running races organised on the island every year, donated one of his kidneys to Louis Barnes, a terminally ill boy. His act was in the papers for weeks and his heroism is still remembered today. Not everyone made such a sacrifice, but if someone broke down on the road, for example, you could be sure that the second or third car, if not the first, would stop to help. If you came for dinner, you left with a stomach full of Mrs Keagan's apple pie. Or you were almost bound to meet Mayor James Harrison, who always had a wry sense of humour and smelled like pipe tobacco.
But Black Rain (the town has the same name as the island itself) also has its dark little secrets that the visitor would never see. It is a town of many contrasts that hide these dark little secrets behind charming smiles and gentle voices. For example, no one really knows the kind and charming Mrs Keagan, who raises her grandchildren by locking them in a dark cellar for weeks. Mrs Carter owns the local sweet shop and regularly bakes cakes of sweet dough full of dried insects, which she then feeds to her neighbours without their knowledge. The Crimbles were a family living on the outskirts of town and raised chickens in small coops on their land. One day Mr Crimble murdered his wife and buried her under an old walnut tree, which then grew through her skull, forming an intricate root system that was shaped like a woman's face. Or few people know Mr William, who regularly buried animals in his back garden and performed strange rituals.
But there are also open secrets, such as Martin Owens Jr. who is said to talk to extraterrestrials and some patrols have also seen UFOs over his house on more than one occasion. But it is also well known that Martin would smoke weed before watching space alien movies on the History Channel. There is Kim Nguyen, the receptionist at the clinic; she always has a cut on her finger and smiles with her eyes but never with her mouth. Betty, the Greek lady who owns the pastry shop—nobody had ever seen her smile, not even in photos from when she was younger. And Brad Fritz, whose wife left him for a man from Holland, and Diandra Beck, who almost stabbed Lisa Chapman through the heart with a serving fork at the local restaurant.
Allan Wilson could sit in his rocking chair for hours on end and stare out the window overlooking the street without batting an eye. But then there was Emma Perez, who used to spread her clothes at night while she sang loudly. And Carl Young was famous for going to Black Rain cemetery to talk to ghosts.
There were thousands of other little things Black Rain is hiding.
As in all small towns like this, news spread fast by word of mouth. It is just a comment or a whisper, accompanied by a suggestive wink or a pat on the back of the hand, and the human chain of news is set in motion. And it works much faster than anyone would guess. Gossip spreads like wildfire through the island and many people liked gossipping about couples as well, sometimes to great success. However, these couples are so close that they could survive the rumours and stories that emerge about them. The saga often disrupts the ties between friends, but there is also a growing sense of belonging and community at Black Rain. People are drawn into the group with the power of their friends and neighbours because they never know when they may need help or help from others.
So I was still looking at the huge trees that used to be my playground as a child. Even after I had my first major success in my career as an architect, I will secretly visit these woods, hoping that someday I will find the clearing where I spent my childhood summers. I was still looking down on the woodland clearing when the first raindrops fell on my face. I couldn't help but smile – had I ever been that young? That carefree? I was standing under the trees of the forest, watching how tiny rivulets of water made their way through the carpet of leaves, forming translucent streams between tree stumps.
But as I was walking deeper into the forest, the first raindrops fell on the leaves. It seemed I would not make it home before the rain but I did not want to run anymore. I wiped off my forehead, leaving a line of a mixture of sweat and rainwater on my skin. I stopped took a short break to collect myself and drank some water from my bottle. I looked up, inhaled deeply and took a deep breath. The taste of fresh spring water was soothing and refreshing, the way water tasted when you first woke up in the morning.
Deep in the forest, the shade of the trees and the mild, steady breeze that roamed among the leaves was now getting rather chilly than pleased with the cold raindrops. The trees were swaying, their branches parting to reveal the dark sky. A few drops of water landed on my cheek and soaked into my hair. I brushed my hand over my eyes to keep them open and shook off the rain droplets from my skin.
After a while, all the signs of sweat and exhaustion were gone as I started to shiver, my breath coming out as white clouds in front of his face. I shook off the polo shirt that I had put on as I marched on toward home. I stepped into a puddle and water splashed all over my shoes but he didn't care, just kept walking.
It was gloomy, the light from the sky stretched through the forest but they were not enough to fill in all the shadows. I tried to focus on walking straight but it was now pouring so heavily that I could no longer see where one tree ended and another began. I stumbled over a branch, which I had not seen. My feet found roots underneath them and I fell down but did not hurt myself because I landed on a thick pile of leaves that cushioned his fall. After standing up, I noticed something odd.
One moment, it was not the rain that I could feel on my body. I sensed something else in the air, something sinister and eerie, hiding around me. A feeling of heavy stillness of the ominous sensation that something terrible had happened there. Or was it only my mind? I looked a few meters away to my right. I was not sure what I saw because it was covered with some bushes and the rainfall but the ground was disturbed and it seemed that there was something.
I started walking towards it slowly. As I was approaching it, for some unknown reason, my heartbeat was getting faster.
Black Rain was a small enough town for anyone to be on the lookout for anything suspicious, and if something terrible happened, someone had to see something. I just hoped I wasn’t the first one.
There was a point I was not sure that I should get closer. Because whatever it was, did not belong there. As I was trying to get closer to the undergrown and find my way among the sharp branches, I was careful not to slip on a wet rock. A few seconds later, when I went through the last group of bushes, I saw it. And that was the most terrible moment of my life. My heart was beating in my throat and the blood rushed inside my ears. I suddenly felt as if someone was watching me and he turned my head, but I could only see brambles and trees. Some voice urged me to go back but my curiosity was stronger than my instincts.
And then I saw her.
The girl was hanging from a branch of a tree. She was naked but so dirty with mud that her face and parts of her body were not visible. Her arms were tied behind her back and her legs were tied together. She was still, lifeless and motionless. I turned away quickly and took a few deep breaths and had to throw up. I didn't want to look at her anymore.
The body was twisted and contorted. A human body but with the features of a wild animal, the girl was a young girl, she appeared to be 18 years old with long brown hair. She had a beautiful face but was so dirty and bruised, that she was beyond recognition. The girl’s naked body with its purple bruise, its blackened eye and its mouth open in a scream of terror.
But it was not only the sight of the girl which shocked me. The strange items around the murder seemed out of the place too: a mound with candles on it, a pile of sticks, some kind of pentagram symbol, and a bloody cross were placed around the hanging body.
'Jesus Christ! 'What a sadistic bastard would be capable of doing such a thing?' - I told to myself.
The girl's body was swaying ever so slightly in the breeze, her lengthy hair obscuring her face. I couldn't tell if her eyes were open or not, and I didn't want to know. I turned away, but the image was burned into my mind and I started running back to town as fast as I could, not caring how much the sharp branches hurt my face anymore.
My first destination was the police station. I was running there like crazy without looking back not looking back. I didn't even realise that my running performance was like crazy. Sadly, the lady looking at the reception desk told me to find officer Miller at the Seven Bears Pub. Of course. I should have known that.
Roger Miller wasn’t a particularly intelligent person. There were more police officers in town but he was the only one I didn’t like. In front of his favourite place, the Seven Bears Pub, he smelled alcohol. He was wearing denim, a brown jacket and a baseball cap. His scruffy clothes and unshaven face gave the impression that he was a homeless, rather than the local constable. The man's eyes were bloodshot and his clothes were wrinkled and covered in dirt. He looked like he had been sleeping in his clothes for days. His hair was greasy and stuck to his head in clumps. The smell of cigarettes and alcohol wafted from him in a cloud. The man stubbed his cigarette on the ground and stubbed it out with his boot.
When I told him what I had witnessed and it took ages until he found the car keys (he left them inside the pub). There was Freddie Tucker with him, a local guy who was actually a member of a weird community and they called themselves the Black Purgers. They were a bunch of folks, they went to the parks and forests all around town with flowers, they played music and all. And I had always known they were hiding something.
Anyway, Roger and Freddie were great friends and drinking buddies. Probably that was the reason why Freddie had never got caught when driving drunk or had never been charged with domestic violence because it was known he hit her sister a few times.
I begged Roger for bringing some more people with us and surprisingly he wasn’t against the idea. Probably because he was aware of his own cognitive limitations too.
Roger went back to the pub and came out with Keith Young, a local lumberjack.
‘Hey Keith, this young man says he has witnessed a witch hanging from a tree in the forest. Wanna feel like checking it out? But I think he is still on drugs so what probably will happen is that I will just arrest him.’ - he told him as we were approaching the jeep.
‘Sure!’ - he said and he jumped into the car. Roger cranked the engine and we were on the way to the forest.
On the way there, they were busy sharing gossip and idiotic jokes with each other that I totally ignored. However, I was happy that I was with three strong men because the murderer could still be lurking in the forest.
The image of the witch was burned in my memory and it was only the girl who I could think of.
After a few minutes, Roger turned to the left, onto a dirty, narrow road. On both sides of the road, there were huge pine trees as if guarding the forest. A few minutes later, the car came to a halt and we all got out as we had to walk from them.
The rain had stopped, but the ground was still wet. My shoes made squelching sounds as I walked. The air was cold and damp and smelled of pine. There was a sense of foreboding in the air as if the forest was warning us to turn back. I wasn’t sure the others had the same feeling though but they weren’t the type to back down from a challenge. Countless night fights in the pub taught them how to be tough.
‘So, which way, young man?’ - Roger asked me and I pointed in the direction I believed was the right way to the crime scene.
We all followed Roger into the forest, stepping over roots and around trees.
The ground was uneven and we had to concentrate to keep from tripping. As we were going into the deepness of the forest, a cold chill of dread ran through me like an electric current because I was sure the people with me had no idea what they were going to face.
We all crept through the undergrowth, the sharp branches snagging our clothes and scratching them. The leaves were so thick that it was difficult to see more than a few feet in front of us. The ground was squishy beneath our boots, and the air was damp and smelled of blood and fresh mud. I could hear the sound of something moving through the brush, but I couldn't tell what it was. I had the feeling that we were being watched. My heart was pounding in my chest, and I was sweating despite the cold. I could hear the others breathing around me, and I was sure they were all thinking the same thing: what was waiting for them?
‘So Freddie, you are also a member of the Black Purgers, right? What are you doing, if that’s not a secret?‘ - I just wanted to have a small talk, to break that depressing silence but instead, the most stupid thing left my mouth.’
‘Oh you know, just cleaning the area from negative energies. We have some rituals to summon good spirits and forces to put them in the right state of mind. We light candles, stand in circles and chase away any negative energy or entities that might be lurking. Once the area is purified, we begin to chant, filling the air with positive energy. Staff like this.’ - he said.
Then I thought for a moment and replayed the same things in my head. Purifying the area from negative energies…
There was something in his eyes I didn’t like. He had thought at the back of his head, I was sure.
‘Do you believe in witches?’ - I blurted it out.
‘The fuck are you talking about?! No such things as witches.’
But I knew he was lying.
Could he? Could he know about it? Could he have been the murderer? Was there the killer with me? It seemed his community hid dark dark secrets. I started to shiver more but I didn’t have more time to think about it because I realised we reached the crime scene. I could recognise it from the shape of the trees and bushes.
The only problem was that the area was empty without any traces of disturbed ground and the tree itself was completely untouched, without any signs of a dead body hanging from the tree.
I stopped.
‘So? This is it?’ - Roger asked.
No words could leave my mouth. I looked around. No religious items, not a drop of blood, nothing would tell that the place was a horrible scene of a murder.
‘What the fuck has just happened?’ - I said out loud.
I started to feel embarrassed but only until the point when I looked at Freddie. His expression was shocked and his face was as pale as a dead body. His face told me everything.
I didn't know what was scarier: the fact that I was standing next to the murderer or that the body disappeared with all those religious items around it. Because I could tell you, man, he himself didn’t know what the hell had just happened, just like me. We both expected the same scene as me.
Then I felt the presence of something behind me. I turned around and noticed a girl standing there. She had long black hair, her face was white and blood was running down from her eyes. Other than that, she was beautiful.
And then it came to me: she was the girl from the tree. And none of the men around me saw her. Only me. She was staring at the tree which she had been hanging from.
I didn’t want to know what would happen next but my legs told me to run away as fast as I could and they didn’t have to tell me twice. The trees passed by in a blur and seemed to fly by faster and faster as if they were being sucked into the centre of a tornado. They moved in a hypnotic circle around me and everything seemed to be happening in slow motion. My legs pumped harder than they ever had before, harder than when I ran against Ryan Field or when I tried out for the track team my junior year or even when my football coach had screamed at me for not being fast enough to catch the quarterback's long pass. My heart thundered in my ears, just like the skies in the distance, which sounded like the prelude to an apocalypse.
They have been reported as missing people ever since and I have never told anyone I was the last person who saw them. No bodies have ever been found.
Later the girl turned out to be Hannah Howe, a local teenager who went missing. She was believed to be a witch by some locals because she was interested in witchcraft. Well, they weren’t far from the truth. When I checked her Facebook photo, I immediately recognised her and I knew it was her.
What I don’t want to know is what happened to the three men but I am sure, Freddie Tucker is still burning in hell. When I approach the forest, I still hear his screams.
